good morning, we're following breaking news at 6:00. we're live on lower east side where a 25-year-old man died in front of his friends in a horrific elevator accident. we'll give you an update on the investigation. seven, six, five, four, three, two, one! happy new year! >> more than a million people packing into times square to night. and into this morning, and now on. >> and it was a mild night for the revelers in times square but the cold air of the season is -- coldest air of the season is now upon us and good morning, i'm lori stokes. >> and i'm ken rosato. thank you for joining us, it is friday, january 1st. and you are never more than seven minutes away from weather and traffic. beginning with meteorologist bill evans and the accuweather forecast. >> well, happy new year everybody. it's going to be a great start

looking at some very nice weather. your temperature 6:00 a.m. 40 degrees and we've got a west wind here at about 10, 15 miles an hour. and it's 39 poughkeepsie and 39 white plains and a great day. 42 by noontime and 45 this afternoon. a beauty of a first day of 2016. we'll talk about the weekend coming up next. debbie duhaime is looking at the commute for you this morning what commute there is on the new year's day. what is going on out there? average couple of problems believe it or not bill. good morning bill and good morning everybody. happy new year and still seeing delays on the subways right now on the a. c. and e. uptown delays with a police investigation. also a switching problem at franklin avenue so still seeing delays on the 4 and 4 as well. now on -- 2 and 4 as well. now an the van wyck northbound at the grand central. accident reported and the grand accident there as well. fdr drive northbound in the 70s still cleaning up the accident and traffic light but watch for that accident investigation. lirr, new jersey transit, metro- north on a reduced schedule to help you out today.

as we go to the web cam and this problem now over on route 1. reports of all lanes subject to close your on route 1 getting over to south brunswick by dean's lane. some type of accident investigation. watch that for you. alternate side of the street parking is suspended. back to you ken, lori? all right debbie thank you. we continue to follow breaking news this manhattan. a man is dead after -- in manhattan. a man is dead after trying to get out of a stuck elevator. this happened on the lower east side at 131 broom street just after midnight. police say the 25-year-old man was with his friends when the elevator became stuck on the third floor. his friends were holding the door open for him to get out but that's when the elevator suddenly started moving again. the victim was severely hurt and then pronounced dead at the hospital. this morning, we've learn odd three active -- learned of three active violations on the building department from the elevators they were issued in may of 2014. and also we continue to follow breaking news.

city sanitation workers using street sweepers, trash trucks, blowers, and brooms to clean up tons of confetti and trash left behind from that very big new year's eve party here last night in the heart of times square. we're talking about a million people here squeezing in and covering roughly 20 blocks all here to watch the ball descend and bring in 2016. this really is an iconic celebration here in new york city. and it brings people from all around the world and they had a really good time last night. now there were some folks who were a bit nervous and perhaps oh reluctant about coming down here because we had the recent attacks in paris and then in san bernardino, california. so terrorism was in the back of a lot of people's midnights but the nypd made it very clear that this would be the safest place in the world to bring in 2016. >> actually do feel safer with like -- the police and being wanded on the way in. so i feel safer and a lot

i did before i got here. >> i feel comfortable with all the police here. i feel pretty safe. so -- new york's done a great job. >> reporter: and we saw an unprecedented show of force from the nypd last night. they really cast a very wide security net. there were police officers looking over from helicopters and rooftops and then you had 6,000 officers on the ground here. some of them very visible and carrying high powered weapons and then other officers in plain clothes and blending into the crowd. they really wanted to make sure that people felt safe and comfortable. now back here live at times square, again, city crews moving very quickly in terms of getting everything cleaned up in the time that we've arrived here, at around 3:30 this morning, they were really moving on down but they have done a tremendous job. in getting everything out of the way here, still going to be some time before things get back to normal but they do it so well. every year. we're live in times square,

eyewitness news. >> all right dray thank you. it was not the only place in new york city holding a big new year's eve party. people packed luna park in coney island last night and fireworks went midnight and laser lights were from the jump. and revelers joined runners in central park for a new year's fireworks show and 5k. the colorful display filled the sky over manhattan at midnight. and lasted about 15 minutes. there was also music and sparkling cider to go along with the celebration. 6:06 and some celebrations were overshadowed this year with fears looming of a possible terror attack. spectacular fire in one of dubai's tall towers captured the world's attention while most displays went off without a hitch. abc's megan hawks taking -- hughes takes a look at the sell braces and tensions on this holiday. >> reporter: around the world, 2016 got a warm and safe welcome from sydney harbor to moscow.

battle frog fiesta bowl game. got allotheria? it kicks off at glen -- all that? it kicks off in glendale, arizona but earlier this week they were watching the orangutan in the phoenix zoo. he was set to predict the winner he does this. daniel chose between two shirts red for the buckeyes and blue for the footing' circumstance. sorry lori, notre dame. >> we'll see. well security will be tight today to keep the crowds safe at the annual rose bowl parade. pasadena police will have the assistance of the fbi and homeland security as well as k- 9 units and undercover officers. people began lining the route last flight to get the best view of the festive floats and musicians. and you can watch the parade live right here on abc7 at 11:00. and you can also catch all of today's bowl games on abc's sister station espn. notre dame takes on the ohio state university at 1:00 in the fiesta bowl.

the winds are west and we're looking at some really nice weather to start 2016. normal high is 39. we're going to be right around 40 today. yesterday we were at 40. it will be around 45 today so we're going to be really warmer than normal. and the sun is up at 7:20 and it will be a gorgeous sunrise as well as sunset is at 4:39. did you see that? daylight hours getting a minute longer. 41 around laguardia. 39 poughkeepsie. really, we are looking at temperatures this morning warmer than normal. and pretty close to one another because of the cloud cover. but there's a little bit of that wind i was talking about. the windchills are in the 30s this morning, we have some clouds and you see the whiter clouds, those are the thicker clouds and the grayer clouds to the west are higher thinner clouds and sun will breakthrough those today. and we'll have a fair amount of sunshine today with the of about 8:00, 9:00 in the -- temperature abou 8:00, 9:00 in

on the money this morning, and wall street is closed today. u.s. stocks closed lower yesterday. capping the worst year for the market since 2008. dow jones also closed down 178 points at 17,425. is nasdaq composite closed more than 1% lower. and the s&p 500 closed nearly 1% lower. asian markets are closed for the holiday. some commuters in connecticut will be paying more to get around in 2016: starting today fares on the connecticut portion of metro- north's new haven line on the shoreline east rail lines increased by 1%. the actual cost change varies depending on the type of pass purchased. this was approved to help pay for new train cars. new york city's bike sharing program pedaling past

season coming right at us. coming right for us. good morning, i'm ken rosato. >> and i'm lori stokes, thank you for joining us. it is friday, january 1st and you are never more than seven minutes away from weather and traffic. and meteorologist bill evans. well, let's take a look at the temperatures shall we? just want to start off the new year by looking at very mild numbers for this hour of the day. should be about 29 and we're at 40 teterboro and 41 laguardia and we have some wind out there that's about 7, 13, 10 miles an hour out of the west-northwest. that will make it feel a little bit chilly this morning and there you go with the windchills. 33, 34 is the real feel this morning. so dress warmly if you're about to head out and traveling but today, we'll have 39 by 7:00. 42 at noon and 45 this afternoon. going to be really nice today with a west wind at 10 to 20 makes it feel a little bit cooler and we have a lot of sunshine today. 45 degrees. should feel nice and even tonight, 36 degrees with the wind dying down. as we go into the evening hours and your weekend is going to

try 130 or the new jersey turnpike. alternate side of the street parking is suspended. back to you lori, ken? debbie thank you. 6:32 and we have breaking news in new jersey, a church dating back to 1827 now up in flames. eyewitness news reporter kala rama just arrived on the scene in west orange. >> reporter: ken, exactly what this looks like here, take a look, flames have been shooting out of the st. mark's church here for the last 90 minutes. it's engulfed and moments ago i saw part of the building in the back collapsing. take a look at what it looked like when we first got here. fire crews again have been fighting this since 5:00 not morning. -- in the morning. the church was recently rented by episcopal diocese of newark do a local con gig. this -- congregation. that's according to the preservation of new jersey. it was listed as one of the ten

in new jersey. again, right now the building is engulfed here and flames. it has been like this for the past 90 minutes. the fell tower at the to -- bell torot the very top of -- very top of the church here. they had no one inside it at this point and no reports of any injuries. live in west orange, kala channel 7 eyewitness news. very sad. all right thank you. 6:33 and we're also following breaking news in manhattan. a mane is dead after trying to get out of a stuck elevator. happening on the lower east side on beam street just after midnight. the 25 ed-year-old man was with friends when the elevator became stuck on the third floor. his friends were holding the door open more anymore to get out. -- for him to get out. the victim was hurt and pronounced dead at the hospital. this morning we've learned of three active violations from the building department on the

and new york city closed out 2015 with more murders than the previous years. of the 27th of december there were 340 murders in the city. that's an increase of 326. the last one happened at 109th avenue. a man in his 20s was found on the street with a gunshot wound to the head. he died at the hospital. more than one million people marked the beginning of 2016 by joining together in times square for the biggest party around. >> and this year the temperatures made it a heck of a lot easier to enjoy the big celebration. we were over the crossroads of the world for the spectacular view. >> and channel 7 eyewitness news dray clark is there in the center of it all. >> reporter: yeah, good morning, that clean-up effort is now winding down. now we know that because traffic is now once again rolling through times square here.

san station workers still wore but at the peak -- here but at the peak of the work close to 200 workers doing a good job of cleaning up here using their street sweepers and trash trucks and brooms and blowers to clean up confetti and other garbage left behind. as you said a moment ago, a million people squeezed into the square last night. to watch that 11,000-pound crystal ball slowly descend at midnight and bring in the new year 2016. and by the looks of it and by the sounds of it. everyone had a pretty good time. no real worries fears or concerns their safety at all. that's -- about their safety at all. that's because the nypd cast a very wide security net to make sure times square was cover and safe. police officers -- covered and safe. police officers were in helicopters and they were on rooftops and on the ground there were 6,000 police officers many of them heavily armed and also blending into the crowd as well. but again, it was all about

the nypd said all along this would be the safest place to ring in the new year. and they delivered on that promise. >> more cameras, more dogs, secondary screening to get into a pen you go through two screenings. and a lot more officers in the pens in plains clothes. >> reporter: and back here live again with a look at times square. a lot of that work now winding down. traffic rolling now through times square. you still see the stages though, they are still set up it's going to take some time before crews are really break them down because they're so large, but again city crews do this so well every year and waste no time because they realize that times square certainly is the busiest tourst attraction in all of new york city, quickly try and get things back to normal. live in times square, delay clark, eyewitness news -- dray clark, channel 7 eyewitness news. and times square wasn't the

holding a big new year's eve party. people packed luna park in coney island last night and fireworks went off at midnight. and laser lights shined from a parachute jump. families were also treated to free rides on the b and b carousel and the thunderbolt roller coaster. if you were anywhere near central park for new year's celebrations, this is what was happening. thousands of runners race in to 2016 including our very own meteorologist amy freeze. fireworks lit up the sky at the stroke of midnight for the 37th annual new york road runners' midnight run. apartments received -- participants received glow in the dark shoe laces for the four mile trek and of course afterwards they then enjoyed sparkling cider. and 6:37. >> what are yores louis for 2016? go to the facebook page and let us know. and we'll talk about them this weekend during eyewitness news saturday morning along with health and financial experts.

was sent out from bill cosby one day after his arrest on charges of sexual assault. cosby sent out the tweet last night quote -- friends and fans, thank you. cross by's out of jail on $1 million bail after arraignment wednesday in a court outside philadelphia. prosecutors say that he drugged and assaulted a woman in his home in 2004. meanwhile kamille cosby is trying to avoid a deposition in a lawsuit against her husband by seven alleged rape victims. she was ordered last judge to testify. well, the newest batch of hillary clinton e-mails from her time as secretary of state, they are now public. shortly after making them available in portions of 275 e- mails were newly classified. they were in a batch of 5500 pages released yesterday. state department fell short of its goal to get 82% of the e- mails out by the end of the year. on president obama's agenda as we start the new year, his long promised response to mass shootings and sources say that he will push through a package

you on this throughout the newscast. and actor wayne rogers who played trapper john on the tv series "m*a*s*h" has died. the actor's family said he passed away yesterday in los angeles due to complications from pneumonia. he played a wisecracking army sergeant and he also appeared in several other shows and had a very successful business career. rogers was 82 years old. 6:45 and a woman injured in a fatal crash involving caitlyn jenner settled the lawsuit against her. jessica steindorff sought unspecified damages against jenner in the crash earlier this year. one of jenner's lawyers stated the suit had been settled and dismissed and no terms of the settlement were mentioned. well, film maker george lucas is apologizing for his comments about the newest installment in the "star wars" series.

the first new york city baby of 2016 was born in brooklyn. coney island hospital announced zayden noel was born at exactly midnight weighing in at 7 pounds and 1 ounce. here's a picture of him. with his mom stephanie. both mother and baby are doing well and congratulations to the whole family. a good samaritan in michigan gave one single mother a very happy start to the new year. it all started at a saab repair dealership. cynthia phlegmings' car was not safe to drive. it's in bad steering problems. well the price to fix it a whopping $800. and cynthia recently lost one of her jobs and spent everything she had on christmas for her two young children. luckily for her the dealership cut the bill almost in half and a good samaritan took care of the rest. >> i cried. it was tears of joy organize

"good morning america" is coming up next. >> but first, we continue to follow some breaking news out of new jersey. a historic church dating back to 1827 up if flames right now and -- in flames right now and eyewitness news reporter kala rama is live on the scene. >> reporter: at this point flames have been shooting outside of st. mark's i pace which will church here for the last two hours and almost at the point of collapsing, at least some areas here. we've already seen part of the building here in the back collapse. they've been here since 5:00 this morning. the church was recently rented by episcopal diocese of newark to a local con grace. this church dates back to -- congregation. this church dates back to 1827 and that's all according to the preservation new jersey. it's one of the ten most endangered historic sites in new jersey and heart-breaking for the community to see this cornerstone here of west orange
