at this hour you see a decent amount of people at time's square but this morning it's desolate. a lot of people are going to work, doing what they have to do but you heard bill mention we are talking single digit feeling temperatures. very, very cold. as someone who is feeling under the weather today, make sure that you go out with all the gear that you need. have your throat covered, head covered, everything. we have seen people out today and weren't prepared, don't have gloves, scarves, anything and thought it wouldn't be bad. for people used to this type of weather, they say it's cold. >> i'm accuweather forecast costumed to this weather. i go to school upstate. it's cold. >> reporter: i have to tell you it's like new year's eve in times square this morning. i say that because all the confetti that got stuck on the

[no audio]. gun control advocates say it's an important first step in keeping guns out of the hands of some of the people that shouldn't have them. live in washington, lana zak, channel 7 eyewitness news. >> thank you. we will carry the president's announcement live on channel 7 and on our web site, abc news coverage begins about 11:40 followed by "eyewitness news at noon." new on long island, two firefighters were hurt fighting the cold and the fire that happened in brentwood. it happened at a home on virgil drive. one of the firefighters had to be rescued. several people were hurt after an out of control van slammed into a building in the bronx. it ended up partially inside a storage post. it happened around 9:00 last night.
they are expected to recover. they should be fine. investigators say it looks like the driver of the van was involved in a crash with another vehicle before he hit the building. we have new details this morning in the murder of a fast- food restaurant manager in the bronx. take a look at this surveillance video of the man suspected in the stabbing death of adam garcia. garcia was attacked outside of a mcdonald's yesterday morning. detectives say the suspect who may be homeless followed garcia into the parking lot after a dispute. garcia was the father of a young child. a brooklyn teenager is a waiting arraignment in the murder of her mother and mother's boyfriend. the bodies of destiny garcia's mother and boyfriend were found a week after they were stabbed and shot. investigators say garcia confessed claiming her mother physically abused her but there
gave her saying she was acting in self-defense. police in orange county are searching for suspects in the murder of a volunteer firefighter at a crowded party. the silver lake fire department says it's offering a $10,000 reward for the murder of justin baits. he was stabbed to death trying to break up a party in pine bush. up to 100 people were at the party. >> we know someone out there knows, saw, heard or has information regarding this case. we need you to come forward and speak with state reports. >> police are asking anyone to come forward if they have photos or video from the party during which baits was killed. u.n. security council condemned the reports on the

tell you what else is happening. we have an accident on the cross bronx westbound at the sheraton expressway. but the eastbound side is closed because of guardrail repairs. all the traffic is diverted at rosedale. i checked out the george washington bridge. it's not affecting the george washington bridge yet. but if this is going to stay closed a long time, the eastbound side of the cross bronx, this could be stacking things up to the george washington bridge. we are going to take a look at the mass transit times. we have long island railroad port jefferson branch with a track condition. new jersey transit, metro north okay. some subways are dealing with signal problems, 1, 2, 3, j and 5 trains. we have street cleaning rules are in effect today. ken, over to you. >> heather, thank you. people in a connecticut community are offering support for a mother unvrabel to save her young daughter from a fire. a church in bridgeport held a vigil for sincere pettway. sincere's mother managed to get
burning building sunday but when she and a neighbor went back for sincere, the heat was too intense. >> it meant a lot that everybody came out, the community came out to support her and her daughter to let her know she is a hero. >> she was unable to attend the vigil. she is undergoing treatment for smoke and burns. an all out war for pizza hut and papa johns. pizza hut is offering a medium pizza with one topping for $5 if customers by another item for $5. papa johns is offering customers that buy a large pizza at regular price a second pie for 50 cents. good luck with your new year's resolutions. new york state's medical marijuana program will roll out this week more than a year and a half after the law was passed.

all traffic is diverted at rosedale. another accident on the new york state thruway south near exit 15-a. tappan zee speeds are down to 45 miles per hour because of the wind. port jeff dealing with delays and that's because of a track condition. street cleaning rules are in effect. ken, over to you. >> thank you. a frantic search is underway for the vandals that turned a car dealership into a personal demolition derby. the damage was discovered in a jeep dealership at westbury. the vandals got into unlocked vehicles with the keys inside and drove around and crashed into cars. damage 120 grand. a car salesman left on what he thought was a test drive but got shoved in the trunk of one of the cars. >> this happened at a damage dealership in houston. the salesmen took the suspects out on a test drive. one pulled out a handgun and forced him in the trunk.

at least my throat is covered. that is helping a bit, but that's why my voice sounds off. in time's square, a wide a ray of -- array of people. people in light jackets and people so covered up that all you see is their eyes because that is how cold it is out here. i took a picture in my car this morning of a 12-degree reading in my car, put that on my facebook page complaining and someone wrote kristin, it's january. that's right. but we have been spoiled by the warm weather. we are showing you video of con ed workers in midtown this morning working out in the cold. we know in the early morning hours they do work. they have to be out in it, we have to be out in it. we have seen policeman doing patrols, very, very cold. try to cover up as much as possible. we knew that this cold weather was coming.

>> he has done a great job. he has not failed. we as players failed him. >> i love coach coughlin. he will always be my coach. >> he was an nfl head coach for 20 years. he spent the first eight in jacksonville. he was one of 13 head coaches to win multiple super bowls. new this morning, police are looking for two men linked to a pattern of burglaries in queens. in each case the men picked the apartment door locks. they are up to nine break-ins at all. they got away with cameras, jewel rice and cash and computers. also new from overnight, a man accused of killing a black man will be under house arrest.
phone video shooting walter scott eight times during a traffic stop that happened back in april. the armed group occupying a federal building at an oregon wildlife refuge, the father and son reported to prison after being convicted of setting fire to federal land. it sparked the cause of the armed activists holed up inside the refuge. federal officials do not appear to be making moves to reclaim the land. governor cuomo pushing to make new york the first state in the country to raise minimum wage for all workers to $15 an hour. the governor named the campaign after his father. the increase would be phased in overtime taking effect in december 2018 and in new york city in july of 2021 for the rest of the state.

he was convicted in 2013 of drunk driving in a crash that killed four people and injured nine others. the father of a survivor says this case is wearing on his family. >> every time there is a new development, it's like ripping a bandage off a wound that started to heal. >> ethan couch is appealing his deportation from mexico. his attorney said the process could delay his return to the u.s. from one day to months. a deadly crash is proving to be a double tragedy for a new jersey family. the 13-year-old daughter died in the wreck but adding to the pain, the driver was their son. police say that he may have been distracted by his cell phone then ran a red light slamming into a minivan on route 1 in south brunswick. a preliminary investigation shows the driver may have been lost and focused on the phone's gps as he approached the traffic light. hits sister blanca was in the back seat with no seat belt.

welcome back. we have new details in the murder of a fast food restaurant manager in the bronx. take a look at surveillance video. this is the man suspected in the stabbing death of adam garcia. he was attacked outside of a mcdonald's in kingsbridge early yesterday morning. detectives say the suspect, who may be homeless followed garcia in the parking lot after a dispute. garcia was the father of a young child. a frantic search on long island for the vandals that turned a car dealership into a demolition derby. this is in westbury. the vandals got in unlocked vehicles.

gusts are 30 to 32 miles per hour. way up there. we are looking at the wind out of the north, clear skies. high pressure sliding eastward. dense, cold, arctic air. by the time we get to the afternoon, upper 20 phs. letter not above -- 20s. not above freezing here. by afternoon we will get to 40, above normal and it will feel better. the windchills into the morning, we are still below zero until we get through the morning commute. then in the afternoon, we see the temperatures feeling like the teens and 20s here. so, after school today, kids, it will be great if you have hockey practice outdoors. 30 degrees, sunshine. heather laughs because she has a hockey player. they love this stuff. waves of cold air starting around january 11th to the 15th.

welcome back. fellow officers will hold a noontime vigil for joseph lemm, the man killed during his air national guard duty in afghanistan. it will be held where lemm worked. his funeral was last wednesday at st. patrick's cathedral with thousands on hand. his parents were here for the ceremony. when they headed home to iowa, they received a hero's welcome. it's been overwhelming for them.
