outbound tube is closed because of overnight construction. it's still with us. inbound side is taking two-way traffic. not causing a tremendous amount of volume but i will keep my eye on it. alternate side of the street parking rules are in effect. ken, over to you. >> thank you, heather. good samaritans helping lead police to the suspect who slashed a woman in the face at random. take a look at the surveillance video in chelsea. the suspect has quite the lengthy criminal background. dray clark is live in the 13th precinct in gramercy with the story. >> good morning. the suspect, 41-year-old kari bazemore has 32 prior arrests. add one more. he is here at the 13th police precinct being held in part because a few people recognized him yesterday walking around midtown and quickly waved down police officers who eventually
-- found bazemore and arrested him. the video shows the suspect, now believed to be bazemore walking alongside a woman and suddenly and randomly slashing her in the face with a knife. the 24-year-old victim was walking to her job in chelsea early yesterday morning near west 23rd and 7th avenue. she noticed him acting weird. she went against herbert judgment to cross the street but she kept on walking. >> answer he hit me i thought this guy looks weird, i should stay behind him or cross the street. you don't think these things will happen to you. i thought i will be fine. he was probably on drugs, maybe psychotic, didn't know what he was doing or maybe he wanted to hurt somebody. i don't know. >> reporter: bazemore was recently arrested for attacking another woman randomly at 6th and west 12th.
walked up to a woman and punched her in the face. in that case he was charged with a misdemeanor and then released. now he is charged with felony assault and criminal possession of a weapon for what he allegedly did yesterday. live in gramercy, dray clark. we have breaking news. rescue crews are on the scene trying to reach a dozen miners trapped in a salt mine in central new york state. 17 miners are trapped in an elevator about 800 feet underground at the cargill salt mine in lansing, new york. this photo was posted on instagram showing a crane arriving to assist in the rescue. firefighters were able to get heat packs and blankets to the miners as the rescue efforts continue. financial fears mounting after asian stocks took another dive. trading had to be halted for a
the shanghai closed down 7%. japan's nikkei closed down 2%. hong kong hang seng index 3%. futures are pointing to an enormous plunge. the dow is pointing to about a 400 drop at the open after the dow dropped 252 points geds closing at 16,906. nasdaq and s&p 500 also begin more than 1% lower. thousands of people are hoping to become instant megamillionaires this weekend with word overnight there were no winners in last night's powerball jackpot. saturday's jackpot will be an estimated $675 million. that will be the largest lottery jackpot in u.s. history. >> mallory hoff is live in hoboken with more. mallory? >> reporter: the largest jackpot in history is right. a lot of people will be making there way to stores like this
sure they pick up a ticket. take a look at this. in the last few minutes this store updated the jackpot number. there it is. $675 million. wouldn't that be nice? take a look at the lines yesterday. while there was no jackpot winner, there were 14 tickets that matched the first five numbers. the prize for that a not so shabby $1 million. one of those tickets was sold in another in connecticut. the clerk here tells me yesterday there were very long lines. when it comes to winning the lottery, one thing is for sure. if you don't play, you can't win. the clerk here says he is feeling lucky. he said it would be nice to sell that winning ticket. live in hoboken, mallory hoff, channel 7 eyewitness news. >> these true, thank you.

two cases of alleged sexual abuse against teenage girls. prosecutors say the comedian cannot be charged in the first case because the statute of limitations ran out. in the second which the alleged victim said happened at the playboy mansion, prosecutors say there is not enough evidence to file charges. he is charged with sexually assaulting a woman inside his philadelphia home in 2004. time warner has been the victim of a data breach and the personal information of 320,000 customers may be compromised. time warner alerted customers yesterday that their e-mail addresses and account passwords may have been hacked. the cable giant was contacted by the fbi about the breach. time warner is reaching out to customers that may have been affected. customers are urged to check e- mails and watch out for suspicious activity. developing in california, storms hitting the west coast sparking floods and landslides.

take a look at the location of the accident. this is the outbound side near fort hamilton parkway. take a look here. that is an s.u.v., looks like a bmw s.u.v. that is completely vertical. it looks like it may have been disabled in the left lane and may have been getting attention from the tow truck. that's the best that i can figure out right now and a tractor trailer came along in the left lane and struck that vehicle but if you look closely there is another vehicle wedged between the truck and the s.u.v. that is up right. they are operating on a rescue. one extrications in progress. we don't have word on that. there is a lot of equipment here. police and fire. if you are coming inbound the h.o.v. lane is closed. big delays back to the verrazano bridge. heather o'rourke is standing by with more. this delay will stretch back across the bridge into staten island.
out and it already is. >> we can actually look at a webcam and i can show you how it's looking traveling on to the belt parkway. those of you who travel in this area, on to the outbound side of the gowanus expressway toward the verrazano bridge it splits off. the gowanus to the left, the belt parkway to the right. here is how the belt parkway looks traveling into the verrazano bridge. the only problem outbound you will find rubbernecking delays on the gowanus. coming off the verrazano bridge, if you can get here and go around the bend that would be the best bet. let's go to the maps and pinpoint where the accident is. here is the accident. it's between where the gowanus is and the belt parkway splits off over here. if you can come up over this direction and get yourself on the gowanus heading into the city, that's the way to go. the outbound side is going to pick up a lot of volume and coming off the verrazano bridge as well. we do have street cleaning rules in effect today.

face is in custody this morning. police are giving credit to quick thinking good samaritans. eyewitness news reporter dray clark is live in gramercy with new details. >> the suspect, kari bazemore has a long rap sheet and history of randomly attacking women. this morning he is in police custody at the 13th precinct. a few people recognized bazemore walking around midtown and they flagged down police officers who found bazemore and arrested him. police have been offering a $2,500 reward to find the man featured in the surveillance video. the video shows the suspect, who is believed to be bazemore, walking alongside a woman then randomly and suddenly slashing her in the face with a knife or box cutter and then running away. the 24-year-old victim was walking to her job in chelsea early yesterday morning. she never saw the man's face.
across her face leaving her with a wound that required 7 stitches. >> something hit me in the face. i thought he punched me, broke my nose. i felt blood. then when i went in the dinner i said please help me. they said you have a big cut. i didn't know what was going on. >> reporter: kari bazemore, the suspect, has a long rap sheet including more than 32 arrests. most recently he was arrested on december 30th for randomly walking up to a woman and punching her in the face. he was charged with a misdemeanor and released. now he is charged with felony assault and criminal possession of a weapon for what he was accused of doing yesterday. dray clark, channel 7 eyewitness news. >> thank you, dray. the slashing of a young woman in queens may have been a targeted attack but the suspect went after the wrong person. we are learning the teen who is
may have been the victim of mistaken identity. a man with a surgical mask and gloves slashed her face. a note was left from the supposed attacker saying she was mistakenly targeted and that the attacker would come back to cut the right teen. police are investigating. power ball fever is heating up this morning with word no one won the giant jackpot. it's now ballooned to $675 million. 14 second prize tickets sold last night are worth $1 million each. the winning numbers are: eyewitness news reporter mallory hoff is live in hoboken with more. >> reporter: shirleen, good morning.

back with breaking news. a huge, huge backup on the gowanus expressway in brooklyn after a big accident. >> causing quite a mess out there. another update from john del giorno in newscopter 7. john? >> reporter: shirleen, this is a horrific accident. we will recap. the location is the gowanus expressway at the 7th avenue overpass in lower brooklyn. what it looks to me is that a vehicle was broken down in the
by a tow truck when this truck, a container truck came along and smashed into everybody in if the left lane. you can see first of all what catches your eye is the bmw s.u.v. completely vertical here pointed nose down to the ground wedged between the container truck and the tow truck. if you look closely, there is an extrications ongoing. there is a red vehicle down under the s.u.v. and container truck. we are looking at an ongoing rescue. outbound all lanes are shut. inbound the left lane, h.o.v. lane is closed. big delays across the verrazano. live over brooklyn, john del giorno, channel 7 eyewitness news. >> hoping they are okay. thank you, john. new this morning, a homeless man is charged with the murder of a mcdonald's manager in the bronx. rafael gonzalez turned himself over to police yesterday morning. investigators say he stabbed 2 -year-old adam garcia outside
early monday morning after following the employee to the parking lot. garcia died from multiple stab wounds. eyewitness news exclusive. five rikers island correction officers are in the hospital recovering from the beating they got from teenage inmates. we obtained the exclusive photos of the guards after the mass assaults. they came from a new rikers unit for what is called uncontrollable inmates. guards had to use chemical spray to regain control. the inmates used to be in administrative segregation. mayor de blasio said that pole was not humane and he ordered a change. >> until the mayor walks in the shoes of a new york city correction officer that has his or her eye socket busted out then he will have a difference of opinion. >> the attack comes two months after the head of the correction warned the mayor's new pole would be recipe for disaster. rescued over the weekend at kicking horse mountain resort. a spokesman says the rescue crews are trained for these kind of emergencies. a federal judge says the monkey that took a now famous selfie cannot collect the profits from the worldwide sale. the monkey took the photo with a camera left unattended by a wildlife photographer. peta sued trying to get the proceeds of the photo to use for the care of the monkey. the judge said copyright law doesn't give animals rights to the photos. dirt from the sidewalks means it isn't that pristine as you can see of the ice sculptures. a man in a warm comfy high-rise had free time on his hand and spent 15 hours putting the igloo together for fun.

that happened around 6:15 this morning on the outbound gowanus. looks like one or more vehicles was standing still in the left lane and got run into by a container truck. they worked for half an hour to extricate one person from the red vehicle wedged under the other accident vehicles. that person was just extradited. we don't have an update on their condition. big traffic delays continue. outbound all lanes are closed. inbound the h.o.v. lane is closed with delays across the verrazano. live over brooklyn, john del giorno, channel 7 eyewitness news. a man is in custody for random attack that left a woman with stitches on her face. >> reporter: the 41-year-old suspect, kari bazemore is here at the 13th precinct charged with felonious assault and
