that's what's breaking news at 4:30. flames rip through a row of stores in new jersey giving crews a tough time. >> the first bit of winter blasts through the area dropping a little bit of snow out there. now the focus shifts to strong winds. >> and the jackpot just keeps climbing. billionaire hopefuls place their bets and continue to grab powerball tickets ahead of tonight's record drawing. good morning, i'm lori stokes. >> thanks for being with us, i'm rob nelson filling in for ken rosato.

its presence felt in the tri- state overnight. this is video from suffolk county. sparks were flying in selden before a power line came down. downed trees knocked out power. more than 800 customers are without power in nassau and suffolk county. >> you are never more than seven minutes away from weather and traffic and meteorologist bill evans. >> the wind will be the tough thing today. no doubt about it. take a look outside, clear skies and 24 degrees. that would feel nice if you didn't have the wind. 18 hopatcong. 25 poughkeepsie. you see we are looking at 23 miles per hour winds at newark, 26 j.f.k. that is mother nature getting midevil this morning. it's quite cold. a wind advisory in effect for the urban areas of new jersey, passaic and long island. wind gust around 45 miles per hour today. it will feel like the single digits and teens.

heather is looking at the commute. >> we will take a look at our mass transit chart. new jersey transit, long island railroad, metro north are doing fine. subway service is on or close to schedule. then as you go on to the b.q.e. northeast near 49th street we had an accident cleared away. that is good news for us. as you go to the george washington bridge upper level, we have pothole repairs. they begin at the palisades parkway getting into midspan. that is on the upper level. that should be cleared away by 5:00 a.m. then lincoln and holland construction. alternate sides in effect today. lori, over to you. >> thank you. new details on a breaking story. flames tore through a row of stores in new jersey and we learned more about the people affected by the blaze. eyewitness news reporter dray clark is live in irvington with the latest.

the fire because of the wind. the wind spread quicker and created difficulty. the fire has been placed under control. behind me you can see firefighters in the process of putting out the hot spots. the flames from earlier, the fire broke out after 1:00 a.m. in the 10 block of florence. letter you can see a tremendous amount of flames. this is in part because of the high wind. visibility is very difficult because of the wind direction. two firefighters suffered minor injuries and at least ten people were displaced as a result of the fire. this is a row of homes and businesses. firefighters placing the fire under control but they have to put out the hot spots. of the ten residents displaced,

on a north korean drone that close crossed the border this morning. in washington republicans and democrats in the house have approved legislation aimed at punishing north corey i can't for its latest nuclear -- test. one of new york city's most wanted murder suspects is back behind bars. >> i didn't kill nobody. they will believe what they lead us to believe. i >> 23-year-old ruben vizarro declared his innocence as he was lead away by police. police say video shows him shooting and killing another man in the bronx and accused of another shooting on new year's eve in manhattan.

drivers around pittsburgh were no match for the latest winter weather.

interstate 70 for hours. 31 vehicles involved. and the three pileups were all within a mile of each other. injuries were minor and the road is open again. conditions seem just as dangerous near richmond, indiana, where more than 40 cars and trucks were caught in chain reaction crashes there. drivers slid off the icy road in near white out conditions. when drivers on the opposite side of the highway slowed down to look at the mess, that set off another round of accidents. >> it's 4:45. let's check in with meteorologist bill evans. >> it's cold because of the wind. long. windchills in the single digits this morning, as we look from our camera on the roof to 59th manhattan. 24, dry humidity. wind 13 miles per hour gusting

we have a brand-new arctic high- pressure ridge moving in that will make it cold. yesterday's high 44 before it came crashing down. normal 38. the park reported a trace of a little wet snow rain mix thing. north and west we had the big heavy snowflakes around. sun up at 7:19, a pretty sunrise. beware of black ice this morning on secondary roads especially on sidewalks, north and west of the city. biting wind all day with wind gusts past 40 miles per hour through the afternoon. north port, massapequa 26. hauppauge 34. 25 around poughkeepsie. 23 down the shore. we have wind this morning out of the west that is down right mean at 23 from newark and over to j.f.k. 10 poughkeepsie. this is how it feels in the

10 j.f.k. 1 monticello. 7 newark. 9 to wrightstown to toms river. it will be quite cold. that's why a wind advisory is in effect. that will have an effect on bridges. so, we have a wind out of the west today. back to the west we have partly cloudy skies. not much going on the next days but the temperatures will warm up. windy and cold today. we have sunshine but the real feel is in the teens today despite being at 31. clouds tonight, cold, winds diminish tonight. low down around 23 degrees. the accuweather seven-day forecast, we are looking at warmer weather tomorrow, not as harsh. cloudy and milder tomorrow. saturday there will be rain. rain saturday probably steady yeast in the morning. north and west it may end as a little wet snow as we get into the weekend. next week it will be brisk and chillier with temperatures

place an accident. whitestone bridge may become affected. at this point it's not. it's doing okay. but something to think about, you may want to go to the throgsburg or rfk heading from the george washington bridge down harlem river drive. new jersey turnpike extension, ramp to 14-a is closed with construction. this is a usual trouble spot for commuters that use the new jersey turnpike newark bay extension. alternate side of the street parking rules are in effect. police are searching for a man that assaulted two young girls at a popular burger spot in manhattan. police say this man grabbed a 12-year-old girl by the risk inside the shake shack on the upper west side monday. after she managed to get away, police say he walked up to a 13- year-old girl outside, hugged and kissed her on the cheek. she pulled away.

mexican officials are keeping drug lord joaquin el chan po guzman moving while he is being locked up. he is being shifted from cell to cell inside a prison. this is the same jail he escaped from in july. officials are looking into his october meeting with actors sean penn and kate del castillo. a pretrial hearing is giving us details about the murder of college student hannah graham. jesse matthew junior is charged with killing the university of virginia student. police blood hound found traces of hannah, police say, in matthews apartment and car. and at an industrial site where graham may have been attacked. prosecutors are seeking the death penalty. the director of national intelligence is the latest high

in washington, the house is overwhelmingly approved legislation aimed at punishing north korea and their leaders for their latest tests. it will deny them the hard currency it needs to maintain its nuclear program. south korea this morning reports that it opened fire on a north korean drone which crossed the border into the south. the drone fled without being hit. president obama heads to nebraska today and louisiana tomorrow on the post state of the union tour. in the final state of the union, the president pressed for a continuation of his hard won victories on health care, climate change and iran. he gave a nod to the tough republican primary campaign going on saying he knew some in the room were anxious to get back to iowa. >> i will try to make it a little shorter.

he has been criticized for spending too much time stumping for the white house and not enough time doing his job. andrew cuomo is expected to announce new state oversight of homelessness in the city. in the state of the state address he is expected to touch on housing and support services for the homeless and the man who gave his shirt off his back on the subway will be the governor's guest for the big speech. watch the governor's state of the state address at abc7ny. we will stream it live at 12:30 this afternoon. breaking news at the top of the hour. a fire has ripped through a row ten people homeless. that fire broke out on florence avenue in irvington. eyewitness news reporter dray clark got an update from the fire chief. he is live with the latest details.

the fire is placed under control a short time ago. you can see some smoke coming from the row of buildings that burned here earlier this morning. firefighters are putting out hot spots to make sure there are no flare-ups. the fire broke out after 1:30 on the 100 block of floor reference avenue. it started in the basement of -- florence avenue. it started in the basement of a bar and restaurant. five apartments and five businesses suffered significant damage. ten people are now homeless. the fire chief says this was a very difficult fire to get under control. >> on arrival heavy fire conditions on the first floor of a combination bar restaurant on the first floor extending to the second floor and the roof area. with four alarms, we have two members injured. one transported to the hospital for back injuries. the other for frostbite. >> reporter: now, the weather

for firefighters in trying to get a handle on the fire. first you had the wind. the wind was feeding the flames which helped the fire spread faster. and then you had the freezing cold creating icy conditions, very icy and slippery conditions on the street. one firefighter that suffered the back injury actually had a fall on the ice. the other firefighter suffering frostbite because of the fleecing cold -- freezing cold temperatures here. firefighters had their hands full in more ways than one. they were able to get the fire under control eventually and spread salt on the street to prevent more slips and falls. the fire here and florence avenue is under control. firefighters will be here likely throughout the day to make sure that this fire doesn't flare-up again. live this morning, dray clark, channel 7 eyewitness news. >> all right, dray, thank you. you are never more than seven minutes away from weather

forecast. >> we take a look outside this morning. we have clear skies. a tad on the chilly side. add in the wind it feels like the single digits this morning. and as we take a look at big alice, the power plant, you see the steam going across there, due west. that wind is cranking out there about 15 to 20, 25 miles per hour at times 30 miles per hour. temperature 23. feels like the single digits. today skies are clear. wind is racing in with a brand- new arctic high-pressure ridge racing in on top of us like last week. 26 by 9:00. noontime 27. 31 in the afternoon.

an update on the breaking news out of tehran. iranian news reporting that the ten american soldiers taken into custody yesterday have been released. those reports say revolutionary guards handed the sailors back to u.s. forces a short time ago.

in new jersey, two firefighters injured and ten people are homeless after a raging fire ripped through a row of buildings in irvington. eyewitness news reporter dray clark shared this video on twitter just after arriving on

dray? >> reporter: well, good morning, lori. firefighters had their hands full in more ways than one. they were up against the flames as well as the extreme weather conditions. let's talk about the fire first. the fire has been placed under control. you can see the row of buildings that burn here. shells. the fire broke out after 1:30 here on the 100 block of florence avenue. it started in the basement of a bar and restaurant. then quickly spread to the adjacent buildings eventually reaching four alarms. five apartments and five businesses suffered significant damage. ten people have been left homeless. also two firefighters suffering injuries as well. one firefighter injuring his back after slipping and falling on the ice. the other firefighter suffering severe frostbite.

fire chief. >> we have a roof collapse, partial collapse of a roof. at this time, all crews are in the process of overhauling and continuing to control the hot spots within the structure. it extended to numerous apartments on the second floor. we have upwards of ten people displaced and they are to be relocated through the red cross. >> reporter: let's talk about the extreme weather conditions that the firefighters were up against. first you had the wind. this actually became a wind driven fire which helped the fire spread quickly throughout those five buildings, businesses an apartments. then you had the icy conditions because firefighters are using so much water in trying to put the fire out. that created slippery conditions. again, one of the firefighters losing his balance on the ice and being treated at the hospital. then the overall cold affecting the equipment. some of the equipment wasn't working properly because it had

welcome back. a protest over plans to bring a casino to the belmont racetrack. they want to install 1,000 video lottery machines at belmont. revenue would close a gap in the county's budget. some long island county residents say a casino would lead to other problems including a surge in traffic and crime and horse racing is different than video gambling machines. flower rail park mayor plans to sue to stop the project. a shelfing collapse could have turned a florida store into a major disaster scene. the shelves came down at one end of the party city store in boca raton and just went on and on. one shelf after another giving way and falling over. the store was nearly empty but the local fire chief says there could have been a massive loss
