elm street an accident no doubt because of these icing conditions. i am not seeing a lot of them reported at this point. you want to use caution. all lanes are closed down on the bronx river parkway. by the way, give yourself ex there time to chip the ice off your car. it took a while for me. n trains not stopping at 86th, avenue u, kings highway and fort hamilton parkway. through brooklyn n trains are skipping those spots. long island railroad on a holiday schedule. new jersey transit on a weekend schedule. metro north on a saturday schedule. alternate side of the street parking rules are suspended. metered are in effect. lori, over to you. >> heather, thank you. breaking news right now in the bronx. police say a suspect has been shot during an apparent robbery attempt. this happened in the last 30 minutes at east 178th and creston avenue in tremont. the suspect is in the hospital.

two other suspects are still on the loose and we will have a live report at the top of the hour. slick and dangerous road conditions lead to a messy situation in westchester county. take a look at this pile up in yonkers. 14 cars were involved. it happened on the southbound parkway where it merges with the sprain brook. a number of people were hurt. all of the injuries appear to be minor. happening today, brooklyn commuters who take the n train have to find another way to into -- into manhattan. dray clark is live in borough mark with what you need to know. >> reporter: no doubt a big change and major inconvenience for 15,000 commuters that ride the line every day. the mta says the shut down is absolutely necessary to do renovation work that it says is long overdo.

subway stations that are closed on the manhattan pound n line stretching from 8th avenue in sunset park to 86th street in bensonhurst. the next 14 months the mta plans to give the closed stations a new look by installing new doors, floors and windows. crumbling platforms will be rebuilt and the communication system like loud speakers will be replaced. elevators will be added to some of the stops. the mta first announced the plans to close the station in fair warning. some commuters are convinced the mta is being a bit ambitious in believing it can get everything done in 14 months. >> it's ridiculous. 14 months no manhattan bound service. 14 months it will be 17 months, closer to 20 months and then they will flip it around. it's a mess.

manhattan side is done, then it will switch over to the brooklyn bound side. essentially we are talking about a more than two years project that it will take them that long to get both sides done. it will be an inconvenience for commuters but the mta says the commuters will enjoy the difference once everything is complete. live in brooklyn, dray clark, channel 7 eyewitness news. >> dray, thank you. passengers were evacuated after a power outage shut down all air trains at newark airport last night. a port authority spokesperson said the system lost power about three hours. buses were used to shuttle folks but many were stuck on trains for a long time. a florida woman stuck on a train spoke to us and shared her video.

nobody really told us what was going on. passengers freed had to walk along the air train track to the nearest station. port authority it is investigating the cause of the outage. on to the agreement in the fight over new york city's carriage horses. according to the city council, the agreement will reduce the number of licensed horses from approximately 180 to 110 by december 1st. it requires a stable be build within championship by okay -- by october 1 of 2018. for more, go to our web site, abc7ny. police want your help in finding four suspects that ganged up on a man and robbed him in east harlem. take a look at the man detectives are search willing for. they stole earrings and an iphone from a man. they kicked and punched him before running off. the victim is expected to be okay. a driver is charged in a deadly accident in new jersey

the boy and his mother were walking saturday in highland park when a car jumped the curb and struck the pair. a 6-year-old was pronounced dead at the hospital. his mother in critical conditions. prosecutors charged a 21-year- old would two counts of aggravated assault. in new jersey, family and friends are mourning the loss of 22-year-old devorah stubin. the jewish memorial chapel in clifton was filled to capacity. stu bin's car -- stubin's car was pulled from the passaic river saturday her body inside. family members say she suffered from seizures. police don't know if that lead to the car crash. today is the 31st observance of the martin luther

it celebrates his birth. president reagan signed the law. for more than 20 years the focus of the day is citizen action and volunteer service. there are a number of events honoring reverend king. among them, mayor de blasio and the first lady attended a contribute at the brooklyn academy of music. there is a protest, several marches planned at nine u.s. airports including laguardia and newark liberty holding a day of civil di obedience as they call for higher wages. you are never more than seven minutes away from weather and traffic and meteorologist amy freeze with a clear throat with a chilly accuweather forecast. >> yes. the winds might help with that today if you have the same issue. gusty winds up to 30 miles per hour. through the afternoon, we are expecting to see upper 30s. combined with what we have going on with the winds gusting all day, already a 38 miles per

these winds out of the northwest will be sharp and steady throughout the day. that will keep it cold. we could get a few light flurries and heavier snow showers through the northern county. windchill is a factor for everybody. feeling like the low to mid- teens through the morning hours. feeling like the single digits into tonight, the commute home and overnight we could have sub- zero windchills. temperatures. through the morning hours, maybe we make it to the upper 20s by later this afternoon. planning this day, a high of 29 by 4:00. then we will see the temperatures continue to dip going down to the teens here in the city. more on the windchills and when we could see relief from the cold in the accuweather seven- day forecast. the latest on the commute with heather o'rourke. good morning, amy. this is the l.i.e. near kissena boulevard. not bad ride. things are fine. let's go to the maps and talk about what is happening on the l.i.e.

two tornadoes roared through central and western florida. a couple died as they slept when a twister hit their mobile home in the town of duette. their adult son and four grandchildren were hurt but survived. another hit siesta key. one woman was pulled from the wreckage of her home.

>> it is a mess. you are right. meteorologist amy freeze is in for bill with the forecast. how are you doing? >> good, lori and ken. it's cold. winds are brutal. subfreezing temperatures the next two days. starting off while we could get a mix of sun and clouds it is not comfortable. 30 is the reading in central park. winds are gusting up to 30 miles per hour. we will continue to see the winds out of the northwest through tomorrow afternoon. 38 miles per hour wind in monticello. that is the top speed. we won't rule out seeing 40 miles per hour anywhere on the map. the wake-up windchills are in the single digits. in monticello, you have a strong wind gust. feeling like 5 in newark. 3 in belmar and islip feeling like 4 degrees. throughout the afternoon, temperatures below the freezing mark. best time for sunshine early on then the clouds roll back in. maybe a flurry can fly around the boroughs but mainly the

northern counties, sullivan, ulster, dutchess. that's where we could see a heavier snow shower creating a coating. other than that, not much in the way of snow and cold. futurecast windchill throws the three below windchill to start off late tonight. outlying areas could be below zero. most places in the feels like of single digits or around zero. waking up tomorrow to still bitter cold across the area. enough to take your breath away. make sure you are bundled up this morning and tomorrow morning. expect cold temperatures. now, on the futurecast, as far as precipitation, a light flurry or two. not a real big deal. there is the lake-effect snow. that brings another 6 inches to parts of upstate like albany could get up to an inch. of snow. that same driving northwest wind into our area could produce a light coating for parts of northwestern new jersey, late tonight and early tomorrow morning.

we go to 29 for the afternoon high. feels like 7 degrees once we get into 3:00, 4:00 this afternoon. for tonight, it's windy with sub-zero windchill. 19 on the thermometer. it feels like 7 degrees overnight in the city. then we wake up to feels like temperatures that are still in the single digits, 10 or colder and that's because of the wind. the wind remains very cold right through really wednesday morning. then we will start to see the weather. not as harsh. temperatures will return to the upper 30s. by thursday colder around -- less colder around here. temperatures push back to the mid-30s as another cold front approaches the area. this could bring us snow. we will focus on that throughout the week. definitely not as harsh as temperatures are in the middle to upper 30s. saturday and sunday upper 30s to near 40. a lot of people have questions about the storm coming in friday to saturday. but just too far ahead to give us an exact track or many

just snowe there will be storm in parts of the eastern region when we close out this week. as far as snow, nobody got much, an inch or less to coat the car or the sidewalk. but it got everybody wondering maybe it will be a winter after all. >> it was a reminder. >> i think of the people with the new snow blowers that are most ants see to see the snow. on that note holland tunnel had police activity. ramps to the holland tunnel are closed off because of this ongoing police activity t.n trains are skipping spots through brooklyn. 86th, avenue u, kings highway, 1th avenue and fort hamilton parkway.

investigators say they did not receive a distress call. a utah police officer was killed by a suspect. the pair ran from a car accident. the officer was shot in the head and later died at the hospital. shortly after he was shot by the suspect, cory lee henderson, he was killed in a shoot out with police. an officer that was injured in the gun battle has undergone surgery. the woman is on the run. a deadly shooting in philadelphia at a homeless shelter. a man was kicked out of the shelter because he was drunk. when he returned yesterday morning to get his belongings, he got in an argument with an employee, pulled out a gun and opened fire. two shelter employees were hit and one died. jesse jackson said the lead water emergency.

he called for justice as people rely on bottled water to get by. he said the people of flint need to be unified in the face of betrayal. the city tried to save money by switching water suppliers. >> this is a disaster zone not just an emergency. maybe there should be duct tape around the city because flint is a crime scene. >> reporter: documents show that state and city officials were told about the toxic water back in june but they didn't release the information for another three months. california had double the reason to throw a party this weekend. >> happy birthday to you >> nicholas ortiz turned 102. he got to celebrate his 82nd wedding anniversary with his wife.

welcome back. one small step for man but another set back for spacex. the falcon 9 rocket successfully delivered an ocean monitoring into orbit but toppled landing on a barge in the pacific because one of the support legs didn't lock as planned. two previous attempts to land a rocket on barge in the atlantic failed. let's check in with meteorologist amy freeze and the accuweather forecast. >> lori and ken, it will be cold today. not just temperatures below the freezing point but a wind coming out of the northwest up to 35 miles per hour. that will make the feels-like

monday, january 1th. martin luther king junior day. some of you are waking up to falling snow. in yonkers. >> for what we can expect the rest of the day, you are never more than seven minutes away from weather and traffic and we start with meteorologist amy freeze. >> lori and ken, good morning to the both of you. the snow that is falling in roadways. it may not be amounting to much but sometimes just a little is the worse case scenario. brooklyn to manhattan, skies look good. temperature below freezing, 30 or colder. the wind gusts have been at 28 miles per hour for central park. 29 miles per hour for morristown and 38 for monticello. that is making our wake-up windchill like the single digits in a lot of spots. there are the snow showers trying to make their way in. few and far between. we will continue to see the potential, especially over orange county, new york and

to see light flurries fly and accumulations will be minimum. throughout the day, mainly mid- to upper-20s is what we are expecting. a return to the single digits as far as windchills go tomorrow morning. much more ahead on the cold and the potential for snow around here. right now heather o'rourke is standing by with a look at the traffic. i'm sure that slick roads are slowing folks down. >> we had a 14-vehicle pile up in westchester. so, the bronx river parkway southbound to desmond. they are doing emergency work. they expect the palmer avenue overpass because of that earlier 14-vehicle accident that occurred last night, so all lanes are closed on the bronx river parkway. they are urging motorists to stay off the bronx river parkway. with it closed down, that is a great idea. l.i.e. near exit 18 an accident. two lanes closed through that spot.

new video just out iraqi goff the jets attacking isis -- government jets striking isis strong points. isis is digging in after recent defeats in the city of ramadi and other parts of western iraq. three of the other americans released by iran in a prisoner exchange are in germany. it's not clear when they will be back in the u.s. they are receiving medical attention at a u.s. military hospital. a fourth freed american has decided to stay in iran. another released independently arrived in massachusetts. one american is still missing after nine years. robert levinson vanished in 2007. the fbi released a statement after this weekend's prisoner exchange calling on iran to find levinson and bring him home safely to his family.

iran has denied holding him. the fbi is offering a $5 million reward leading to levinson and his return. a bronx community will fight back against violence after a man was beaten unconscious in an apparent hate crime. a rally is planned tomorrow morning at ps 119 in soundview. that's where he says he was attacked by two masked men picking up his niece friday afternoon. as he was beaten, he said the muslim. the attacks sent him to the hospital with cuts, bruises and a broken rib. >> >> to be attacked this way, to attack someone because of their faith is something that we community. >> he will not let the attack change what he wears or where he goes.

seven minutes away from weather and traffic and amy freeze in for bill with the accuweather forecast. >> lori and ken, if you have to wait outdoors for any amount of time, it's uncomfortable with the wind and the temperature being below freezing. so, you got to be ready for the feels-like temperature to be at 10 degrees or colder in some cases. right now we are below freezing as far as the thermometer goes. sunshine early on. know that it will be uncomfortable all day. any exposed skin will feel the chill. peak wind gusts up to 30 miles per hour in the boroughs. higher than than in monticello. that will be the trend here throughout the day, very strong wind gust. on the accutrack radar and satellite you can see light showers across monroe through orange county, new york this morning. the windchills, i can't emphasize it enough through the afternoon, picking up kids from school, tomorrow morning

police are investigating the deaths of three people near a college in western new york. their bodies were found in a house near a campus.

old woman and 24-year-old man are students. another 24-year-old man found dead at the scene is a former student. investigators say they found a knife near the bodies and believe one of the victims may have killed the other two. a woman in nassau county is facing charges accused of hosting a party for nearly 100 underage drinkers. police received calls about a loud party saturday night at a home in hewlett bay park. responding officers say between 75 and 100 underage partygoers drinking alcoholic beverages. police charged michelle with violating the state's social host law. meteorologist amy freeze is in for bill evans with the accuweather forecast. >> ken and lori, good morning. this monday is starting off with a bitter blast of air. temperatures are below freezing. our high in the history books

it does not get that warm for the next two days. subfreezing with our temperatures through tuesday into wednesday morning. northwest winds sustained in central park at 17. gusts above that, even up to 31 miles per hour in the last 60 minutes. monticello 38 miles per hour wind the strongest we have seen. we can't rule out a 40 miles per hour wind across the board. strong northwest winds coming in. that is creating the windchill factor in a lot of places. through the afternoon, feeling like 10 or colder with a combination of low temperatures and high winds. here is the chance for snow that we got this morning out of orange county. monroe to yorktown. of snow. not a real big deal but enough to create slick roadways. create your time -- take your time with travel. we have cold air, single digit through the afternoon. overnight hours we could have below zero.

through the after on tuesday, we will see it ease up a bit. relief from the cold doesn't come until wednesday then less harsh and temperatures start to return to near normal for this time of year. arctic air and a biting wind is with us. a coastal storm late in the week. a lot of people will ask about this one. it's the potential to get snow that stacks up around here. we don't know much about the storm. until then flurries for northwest new jersey. not much, a coating at best. late in the week there is the potential friday into saturday to get snow around here that sticks and amounts to something that you could possibly shovel. we know it will be in the east. getting the exact track will be tricky as we get closer. a look at what snow could accumulate, northwest new jersey is the main spot where we see a little bit, a tiny dose, a coating showing up today into tomorrow morning. sunrise at 7:17. feels like just single digits.

breaking news in the bronx. two suspects are on the run after a trio of robbers targeted a victim after 4:00 this morning. >> one of the suspects was shot by the victim. mallory hoff is live in tremont with the story. mallory? >> reporter: good morning. preliminary reports coming in right now. investigators are saying it appears that some type of off duty law enforcement officers fired a single shot at a man who was attempting to rob him. take a look at this video. you can see investigators at work here at the scene. this right now, 179th street and creston avenue in the tremont section of the bronx. now, what we are learning is that it appears, according to investigators, that around 4:00 this morning, three men approached this off duty law enforcement officer at which

that officer did in fact fire a single shot. that man shot has been taken to st. barnabas hospital. the extend of his injuries are unclear. what we are learning at this hour is that two men, the two men with that man who was shot, well, they ran in different directions this morning. what we know right now, one wearing a black jacket, another wearing a red jacket. both of these men considered armed and dangerous. one carrying a gun and another carrying a knife. investigators are saying that anyone who is in this area this morning needs to be on the look out for these two men. again, the condition of the man shot unknown and investigators say it appears it was an off duty law enforcement officer that fired that shot when he was walking along the street this morning and those men allegedly attempted to rob him. live in the tremont section of the bronx, mallory hoff, channel 7 eyewitness news. >> thank you.

morning at east 178th and creston avenue in tremont. eyewitness news reporter mallory hoff is live at the scene with an update. what do we know. >> reporter: ken, good morning. in the last few minutes we are learning that the person that fired the sing many shot is, in fact, an off duty nypd officer. he fired a shot at a man attempting to rob him around 4:00 this morning. i want you to take a look at the scene. you can see the single shell casing. this is east 179th street and creston avenue in the tremont section of the bronx. what we learned there were three men this morning who approached that off duty nypd officer and attempted to rob him at which point that officer did, in fact, fire a weapon. the person who was shot was taken to st. barnabas hospital. we are learning that person is expected to be okay. but there were another two men. the other two men with that --

they are not happy at all. we are talking about 50,000 day. the mta says it's necessary to do major renovation work that is long overdue. here is a look at the nine stops that will be closed starting this morning stretching from 8th avenue in sunset park to 86th street in bensonhurst. the next 14 months the mta will give the closed station a new look by installing floors, doors and windows. rebuilt and the p.a. installed. letter wheelchair accessible ramps and elevators will be installed at the stations. the mta first announced the plans to close the stations in 2014 trying to give commuters fair warning but some commuters say the plan to have all of this work done in 14 a bit ambitious.
