blast of winter causing problems on the roads. more than a dozen cars colliding in westchester county. good morning, i'm lori stokes. >> i'm ken rosato. thank you for joining us. today is monday, january 18th. we are waking up to brutally cold temperatures in some spots. snow was falling into the early morning. this is what it looked like in yonkers overnight. >> you are never more than seven minutes you are never more than seven minutes away from weather and traffic and meteorologist amy freeze in for bill. >> it feels like 15 outside. cold temperatures. brutal wind. that will be with us the next two days. don't expect a warm up any time soon. bundle up as you head out. make sure you have the scarf, gloves, hat. peak wind gusts above 35 miles per hour just in the boroughs. 23 miles per hour winds for white plains. factor that in with the cold temperatures and it feels like

feel like temperature is the warmest it will be because we will have temperatures in the single digits. colder tomorrow. passing 287 is a snow shower. these areas, be careful in ramapo and the connecticut state line you have to watch for slick conditions. planning the day, temperatures stay in the upper 20s right through the afternoon. with help see changes by wednesday but until then bundle up. the latest on the road conditions affected by the light snow and cold temperatures, here is heather o'rourke. you are right about that. and we have an issue with n trains, no manhattan bound service until 2017 at 7 of the 9 stations in brooklyn. dray clark has more on that. near 287 and sawmill slick conditions. all lanes closed down, fire department, ems on the scene. we have this problem on the bronx river parkway from

they are inspecting the palmer avenue overpass because of an earlier 14 vehicle pile up. long island railroad holiday schedule. new jersey transit weekend major holiday scheduled and metro north on a saturday schedule. we have alternate side of the street parking rules suspended but the metered are in effect. lori, over to you. >> thank you. now on to the breaking news in the bronx. an armed robber shot by police overnight after trying to hold up an off duty nypd officer. this happened two hours ago on east 178th street in the tremont section. mallory hoff is there live. mallory? >> reporter: the off duty nypd officer fired a single shot at a man he said was attempting to rob him. take a look at the scene. you can see a single shell casing under the cone. we are at east 179th street in

that is where we are learning that three men approached this off duty nypd officer and attempted to rob him at which point the officer fired a single shot. we know now the man who was hospital. he is expected to be okay. but the two men with that suspect, they took off in different directions. this morning we know one of them is wearing a black jacket and one a red. one armed with a gun and the other a knife. investigators are saying anyone in this area needs to be on the look out this morning. moll lori hoff, channel 7 eyewitness news. >> thank you, mallory. now on to the race for president. bernie sanders and hillary clinton debate before the february 1st iowa caucuses. with time running out before the first ballots are cast, the

over gun control and the legacy of president obama's health care reforms. >> i want us to defend and build on the affordable care acted and improve it. >> get health care to all people and private insurance out of health care. >> also participating was martin o'malley. his single digit poll numbers nearly disqualified him from taking part. a joint effort underway by u.s. and iraqi forces to locate three american contractors missing in baghdad. local media reports that the three americans were on their way to baghdad international airport when they were kidnapped by militia. the missing u.s. citizens are not members of the military but were working as civilian contractors near iraq's capitol. three of the four americans released by iran in a prisoner exchange are in germany. it's not clear when they will

released prisoners are receiving medical treatment at a u.s. hospital. a fourth freed american has elected to stay in iran. a 5th american, who was released independently of the swap arrived in massachusetts last night. one american is missing in iran after nine years. retired fbi agent robert levinson vanished in 2007. the fbi released a statement after this weekend's prisoner exchange calling on iran to find levinson and bring him home safely to his family. levinson was born in flushing queens. iran has denied holding him. the fbi is offering a $5 million reward for information leading to levinson and his return. a bronx community is preparing to fight back against violence after a man was beaten unconscious in an apparent hate crime. a rally planned tomorrow at ps 119 in soundview.

clothing and says he was attacked by two masked men picking up his niece. as he was beaten, the men yelled the words isis and muslim. the a tack sent him to the hospital with cuts, bruises and a broken rib. >> blood was running nonstop from the nose, from here. >> to be attacked this way, to attack someone because of their faith is something that we cannot tolerate in this community. >> he will not let the attack change what he wears or where he goes. you are never more than seven minutes away from weather and traffic and amy is in for bill. >> lori and ken, good morning to the both of you. happy freezing monday. skies are good. you can see the empire state building down to one world trade. feels like 15. the low temperatures and high gusty winds will make it feel uncomfortable the next couple of days.

heading to the southbound side scarsdale to desmond emergency work. crews are out there. they are inspecting the palmer avenue overpass because of a 14- vehicle accident that occurred last night. all lanes are closed as you go through that spot. a problem on the garden state parkway. southbound down by exit 80. accident being cleared away. long island railroad is on a holiday schedule. new jersey transit on a weekend major holiday schedule. metro north on a saturday schedule. path trains modified weekday and sways on a weekday schedule and buses on a reduced schedule. plan accordingly. we have alternate site of the street parking rules suspended. metered in effect. >> thank you. heart break on a college campus in western new york. still ahead on "eyewitness news this morning," three people found dead in a home including two students.

the damage done by deadly storms on florida's gulf coast. two people were killed when down. the storm brought down trees and ripped roofs off homes in damage. investigating the deaths of three people near a college in western new york state. house. police say two of the victims, old man are students. another man found dead at the scene is a former student. investigators say they found a knife near the bodies. >> with some of the information that was located on or at the scene gives us some preliminary information that we can say that one of the individuals may have been the perpetrator. >> the school will hold a news conference later today as police continue their investigation.

be in court accused of hosting a party for dozens of underage drinkers. police received calls about a party saturday night in hewlett bay park. when officers arrived they found dozens of minors drinking. our cameras found numerous beer cans and bottles on the front yard. michelle is charged with violating the state's social host law. we check the accuweather forecast. >> let's check in with meteorologist amy freeze outside the studio on the upper west side. it's cold out there. >> isn't there a clause once it goes below whatever you don't have to go outside? >> we will look for that. >> i will look at the fine print. good morning. it is so cold out here this morning. temperatures are low. winds are high. i am close to the building getting a little shelter. the winds are gusting above 30

inches of snow for places like syracuse. for us it's a flurry, quick moving snow shower, enough to get snow on the roads which can be worse than stacking up. temperatures are below freezing. slick conditions in places like orange county and westchester this morning. on 95 there are a few light snow showers into the city. be aware of that. we could see the flurries fly from time to time. no major snow stacking up. it's about the winds and the windchill factor. by tomorrow morning, the windchill factor could be in the single digits and below zero. sub-zero windchill can't be ruled out. as far as snow stacking up again, not that impressive. when the flurries come through, maybe they bring a tenth of an inch. maybe enough to coat the roadways. be aware of that. today and tomorrow. the windchills down to the single digits. the low single digits and feeling like below 10 through tuesday afternoon.

it doesn't stack up deep to make the roadways slick because of the freezing temperatures. the forecast 29 for the high this afternoon. tomorrow similar temperature but the winds are more harsh. the windchill factor could be more severe tomorrow morning. feels like the teens. we will go to single digit windchills tonight and tomorrow morning. it's the cold out there that is really getting everybody's attention as they try to get away. it's the cold on the roadways and surfaces that make it difficult. this is true. n trains no manhattan bound service until 2017 at 7 of the 9 stations in brooklyn. e and f trains mechanical problems. uptown local only roosevelt to 71st. amy was talking about the cold temperatures and what is happening to the roadways as a result. bronx river parkway south closed down scarsdale to desmond avenue because of this emergency work. there was a 14-car pile up last night.

reaction crash near the palmer road bridge. >> elsewhere, temperatures are this morning. minutes away from weather and traffic beginning with meteorologist amy freeze in for amy? >> ken and lori, it doesn't take much snow when temperatures are so cold. the cold temperatures combined with the wind make it feel like 15 degrees out there. that gives you an idea of what we are dealing with. wind gusts up to 30 to 40 miles per hour. the latest reading is 35 miles per hour winds. that makes it feel like the single digits in places like white plains. single digits for trenton, belmar and wrightstown at 8 degrees. on the accutrack, light snow scooted through orange county and westchester. this is where we have seen traffic trouble. you get a little snow coming in. 95 to bridge port.

>> thank you. in the bronx. the nypd is now investigating an early morning shooting that left one man hurt. >> sources say that he was shot duty police officer. mallory hoff is live in the mallory? morning. new information in the last few minutes. i spoke to an officer on scene who tells me that the suspect knives. one of them a steak knife. if you take a look behind me, you can see officers gathered trying to understand what morning. we are on east 179th in the tremont section of the bronx. what we know is that three men approached this off-duty officer, attempted to rob him and that's when that officer fired a single shot striking that one suspect in the torso.

we are told this morning he is expected to be okay. in the meantime, back out live, the two other suspects took off. investigators say they believe one of those men is wearing a black jacket. the other man wearing a red jacket. both are considered armed and dangerous. it's unclear just how far they got. investigators say they are searching for those men right now. anyone in this area this morning does need to be careful. we are live in the tremont section of the bronx, mallory news. >> thank you. new information the man arrested for exposing himself at a putnam county library charged with public lewdness. benjamin thomas was arrested last thursday accused of flashing a woman inside butter field memorial library. investigators were able to track thomas down using security video from the library.

in new jersey a driver is charged with an accident that killed a 6-year-old boy. a car jumped the curb and struck them. he was pronounced dead at the hospital. his mother is in critical condition. prosecutors charged a man with two counts of assault. police are on the look out for a random slashing in the village on east sixth street. he was slashed on his face and back saturday afternoon. he was knocked to the ground as he walked near cooper square looking at a cell phone. police say it was only when the man got up that he realized he was bleeding. one eyewitness described the scene. >> behind the white car, somebody on the corner -- i don't know what happened. the attacker is on the loose.

asked to call crimestoppers. it comes after two other attacks one in chelsea and the other in the east tremont section of the bronx. in brooklyn, the next 14 months, the mta will be making m line. that means riders trying to get to manhattan will have to find a different stop to take. borough park. >> a big change and major inconvenience for the 50,000 commuters that ride the line every day. the mta says this is necessary because it will allow them to do renovation work that is long overdue. here is a look the at nine subway stations that will close on the manhattan bound n line from 8th avenue in sunset park to 86th street in bensonhurst. the next 14 months the mta plans to give the closed stations a new look by installing new windows, doors and floors and replacing

them and installing a new communication system, wheelchair ramps and elevators will be added to some of those stops. now, the mta first announced the plans to close the stations in 2014 trying to give commuters fair warning but some commuters are convinced the that is being a bit ambitious in believing it can get all the work done in 14 months. it's ridiculous. 14 months no manhattan pound service. that means 17 months, closer to 20 months and then they will flip it around and -- it's a mess. >> reporter: now, once the manhattan bound side is complete, the mta will begin work on the brooklyn bound side. all in all, you are talking about more than two years of renovations on the n line. a major inconvenience for commuters. the mta hope they will like the new look and feel of the renovations once they are done.

a 65-car pile up ends with tragic results. authorities in hartford, michigan say one person is dead after three separate crashes caused by white out conditions. a dozen tractor trailers were involve. three people suffered critical injuries including a sheriffs deputy hit while administering first aid to someone else. developing now a suspect is in custody after a police officer was shot and killed in ohio. this happened overnight in danville, a little more than an hour north of columbia. the officer was -- columbus. the officer was reported missing when his hat was found with blood on it.

a suspect was taken into custody after a two-hour manhunt. in utah, one police officer is dead and another is undergoing surgery after exchanging gunfire with a suspect. the suspect was killed by police. it happened yesterday morning when the officers responded to the scene of a car crash. investigators say a man and a woman fell cory henderson is accused of firing at officers killing one. officers then returned fire killing henderson. it's not coming overnight but this morning there is an agreement in the fight over new york city's carriage horses. city hall released a statement announcing the compromise with the teamsters union. it calls for reducing and relocating the horses that became a political target for mayor de blasio. horses will be restricted to travel from their stables on the west side and to central park where they can pick up riders. the agreement will decrease the

approximately 180 to 110 by december 1st. the it requires that a stanley be build by 2018 to permanently house the houses. the windchill is worse than it is today. the worst is coming in tomorrow morning. there is a coastal storm late in the week that could bring measurable snow to the east. we will track that on accutrack. a flurry here or there. a few snow flurries snuck in orange county, westchester creating travel trouble there. north 87 slowed folks down. be careful of slick roads. we are getting light snow in manhattan. in and out of the city we have trouble. the north shore of long island is a spot where we will get more snow moving in. on the futurecast, not much in the form of precipitation today and tomorrow. a lot more sunshine tomorrow despite all the cold air funneling in from the north. a cold outbreak, if you will, days. by wednesday it's less harsher.

10 to 15 on the accutrack futurecast, how much snow is stacking up, it doesn't amount to much. the little amount with subfreezing surfaces can make things slick. take the extra time, not just in cars but commuting, walking around and about. it's cold and sometimes you don't pay as much attention to tur footing. there are slick spots out here. temperatures will continue to increase middle to late part of the week. we will track another storm. until then, 29 degrees,ing to 19 tonight. tomorrow temperatures subfreezing as well. the accuweather forecast, not as harsh, 37 wednesday. less cold with the winds totaling settling down. the breeze picks back up. there is a storm to track friday into saturday. where that ends up and how much snow remains to be seen. we could be back to 40 by sunday. that is a look at the accuweather seven-day forecast. bundle up, it's cold out here this morning. back to you guys.

trader joe's has issued a recall affecting cashew nuts sold at stores in our area. the company says its raw cashew pieces may be contaminated by salmonella. the bags are labeled best before july 17th 2016. they were sold at stores in new jersey, new york and connecticut. customers can bring the bag back to any store for a refund. coast guard commanders say one of the helicopter crews rescued two men in some of the worst conditions they have seen off florida in the gulf of mexico. the rescue swimmer headed down in 40 knot winds. in spite of 20-foot sea swells he still managed to latch on to the men and bring them up one by one. the sailboat cracked open in the extreme weather. they were rushed to key west airport for emergency medical treatment. >> talk about brave. >> fortunate, too.

back to the bronx. an off duty nypd officer shoots

robbery. >> this happened in tremont. mallory hoff is there with the latest. mallory. >> reporter: we know this is in fact an off duty housing division sergeant walking home from his shift early this morning. this is a look at the scene, how things look looked in the tremont section of the bronx after 4:00 this morning. what we know, three men approached this off-duty officer, attempted to rob him. that's when the officer fired one shot hitting one of the suspects. that suspect then fell to the ground and hit in the torso, transported to st. barnabas hospital. he is expected to be okay. back out live, we know the other two men involved, we are told they took off in different directions. one wearing a black jacket, another wearing a red jacket. they are said to be armed and dangerous. investigators now saying people in this area this morning do need to be careful. >> mallory, thank you.

commuters that rely on the n train will have to find another way to manhattan. nine stops are closed for repairs. those platforms will be closed for more than a year. the mta says repairs to crumbling overpasses, outdated passes and stairways will take 14 months. it will be done hopefully in 14 months. brooklyn bound platforms will be shut down for just as long. this is the scene in yonkers after a 14 car crash on the bronx river parkway. it happened in the southbound roadway at the merge to the sprain brick. all injuries are considered minor. do you ever not have a busy day with the commute, even on a holiday. >> when i'm not here. but it is busy. let's take a look at route 80. it's a mess. everybody is just crawling along on route 80. this is near exit 34.
