good morning, everybody. happy sunday. i'm rob nelson. >> i'm toni yates in for michelle charlesworth. always glad to have you. >> and always glad when weather gets better. this is definitely the better half of the weekend. no question. beautiful skies out in. it looks really great. don't let it deceive you completely because it still feels very cold. there is a freeze warning in effect until 10 a.m. we've got about an hour left of that. just now temperatures above freezing for central park, the official reporting station. the tpz are so cold north and west of the city are below freezing. trent on, lake hurst are at freezing. islip is above freezing. it is cold and we've got a wind chill making it feel colder than the thermometer readings.
the freeze warning will lift and warmer temperatures are expected tonight. we're about ten degrees warmer tonight than last night. clear skies take us through the second half of the weekend. lots of sunshine and temperatures pushing towards the 50s. upper 40s is where we'll stop. light rain will come in before dawn tomorrow morning. i'll have details coming up. the next seven hours look good. high of 48 today in new york city. accuweather 7 day coming up next. tragedy to tell you about. a former nfl player has died after a violent altercation in louisiana. former saints defensive end, will smith, was fatally shot in new orleans last night. smith was driving with his wife when he was rear-ended by another car. the driver of the other vehicle shot smith after an argument and then also shot his wife. smith was pronounced dead, his wife was taken to the hospital, shot twice in the leg. the gunman has been arrested.
in upstate new york. also, a 30-year-old man is the bronx. washington was stabbed multiple times in the neck and torso. this happened during a party at the saint mary houses around midnight. washington was taken to the hospital where he died. no one has been arrested yet. let's talk politics now. the 2016 presidential candidates are continuing to focus big time here in new york. hillary clinton made multiple stops before appearing, surprising people at an annual comedy show put on by the media, guest of the mayor. fresh off caucus victory in wyoming, seventh straight win, bernie sanders is in brooklyn where he'll host a rally this afternoon. kristin thorne is live in cone y y island with the latest.
afternoon, the streets in coney island are expected to fill with bernie sanders supporters. it's being called a future to believe in rally. it is free and open to the public. the candidates have been make ago a lot of appearances in our area in the last few days, gearing up for the april 19th primary. >> the presidential race took an entertaining turn last night with hillary clinton making a surprise appearance at the inner circle. it's a comedy charity show put on every year by the media. she had a more serious tone earlier in the day in brooklyn where she stopped at junior's cheesecake. she discussed her plan to break down barriers which she says are holding back latino families. >> we've got to do more to make sure that non english speaking children are given the support that they need. >> bernie sanders made multiple stops in our area yesterday, one

a woman in the hospital after being attacked by a pitbull in newark. the woman was attacked in front of her home on leslie street by other neighbor's dog. suffered a bite, possibly a broken arm as well. her protocol -- per protocol, the humane society will take the dog into custody. no determination on charges against the owner yet. family in the bronx is hoping players will be answered and a missing loved one will be found. this is a candlelight vigil for 38-year-old man. family and friends gathered at the spot where he was last seen two weeks ago. he's the father of a 3-year-old girl. he worked as a lie library yen assistant. >> we're working with nothing. we have no new information, no new leads. basically it's a mystery.
>> he was last seen dressed in black, black jeans, t-shirt, hoodie, black sneakers. his brother is urging anyone with information to call police. good news this morning. nassau county police say a missing teenager has been located just fine. 13-year-old young is with relatives in montgomery in orange county. young was last seen at home in westbury on sunday night. mother report him missing as a morning. he's been found and he is safe. a massive fire broke out at a hindu temple in india, killing 100 and injuring 200 more. we'll learn more about the events that led to the deadly fire. meteorologist amy freeze tracking changes coming your way. the freeze warning will lift at 10 a.m. this morning, but more

. this story developing still out of india. celebration quickly turned to tragedy after a massive fire killed more than 100 people at a hindu temple. an unauthorized fireworks show ignited a whole separate set of fireworks that were stored in the temp m complex. thousands were packed inside at the time. police say 102 people were killed and at least 200 others injured. india's prime minister tweeted condolences saying he was headed to the temple to assess the damage. john kerry is making a historic visit to hiroshima. he and others are meeting to talk about the migrant crisis, terrorism and the conflict in ukraine. the two day meeting is one of
kerry is the first secretary of state to ever visit hiroshima. he could be paving the way for president obama to become the first visiting president to visit the city. latest on the terror attacks in brussels. there is more information that the terror group that struck brussels last month initially planned to launch a second attack in france, but investigators say the perpetrators were surprised by the speed of the progress and investigation and decided to russian attack on brussels in seed. yesterday belgium authorities confirmed the man in the hat, the suspect is in police custody. he confessed that he is indeed that man seen in surveillance video at the brussels airport. authorities arrested him friday in brussels. investigators also identified another man arrested as a suspect in the subway attacks. they say he's from sweden and seen in surveillance video

a bit into mid-april. yesterday behind us, today a new day. we are getting the reenforcements of the chilly air coming in. with the cold temperatures, we also have wind out there and that's making it a little bit colder than the temperature readings. freeze warning will be done at 10 a.m. temperatures are already coming up right now. mid to upper hudson valley stretching into the northern counties, mid-30s in a lot of spots. most above freezing. 37 on islip, 36 in montauk. west orange at 36 degrees. those numbers are still a handful of degrees colder than it was yesterday at this same time. we're getting this chilly start. you'll need to bundle up and be ready for cool temperatures and the winds still gusting around 20, 25 miles per hour. all this ads up to a chill -- adds up to a chilly day. this afternoon if you're in the
lot better than yesterday. you'll feel warmth and then we'll get temperatures close to 60 tomorrow. clouds come in late tonight and the predawn areas tomorrow. areas north and west could see spotty showers, light rain, drizzle. this is not a big deal. i want to call it sprinkles for the city because it's that light of rain. but there will be clouds in place, temperatures in the upper 50s. tuesday, same story. mild air mass, in this disturbance will create the chances for rain and periods of heavier rain. i think we get away with just a few showers here and there, though. highs today shy of 50 degrees. we're not back towards the averages, but almost there. second half of april things change. the jetstream swings way to the north, trapping that arctic air, making the cold air retreat. in then we get a mild flow from the pacific, called a zonal throw.
will be a lot more mild and seasonal for us. tonight we go to 41, more mild overnight. tomorrow temperatures are near the 60-degree mark. it's brief showers and accuweather seven-day forecast really plays this out for us. monday and tuesday a little overcast and drizzly, tuesday 56, sharper with sunshine. 60s for thursday, friday and saturday. those days are looking pretty good. a turn around in the temperatures is the first mark we have this week. we have a few showers coming our way, but nothing extreme. i think the second half of the weekend does end pretty decently. a lot of people would like to see it warmer quicker, but second half of the weekend with a lot of sunshine isn't bad at all. >> make it a good day to walk down the shore on the boardwalk. >> yeah, it will be beautiful looking. make sure you have extra layers
>> not bad advice. thank you amy. police arrested three firefighters friday after a fight broke out at mcfadden's restaurant and saloon following the mets homeowner. the three face assault and disorderly conduct charges. investigators also charged one with resisting arrest. less than a year after nine people were gunned down inside a charleston, south carolina church, the victims and their families are being honored. a university in charlotte, north carolina, hon ard community members at their -- honored community members at their annual gala. they recognized the strength of the emanuel 9 and their surviving family members. those family members are still trying to process. >> i'm on the road of understanding, i'm nowhere near forgiveness. >> dylann roof the man charged with killing all nine victims
bible study is set to stand trial in state court in july. no date has been set for his trial in federal court. i remember being down there for that shooting last june for the station covering that. when he appeared in court a day or two after the shooting, it was one of the more graceful things i ever saw. they forgave dylann roof and it was this incredibly powerful thing. the power of faith to for give so soon after the shooting was remarkable.

up with peak wind gusts. there is a brisk feel to the atmosphere. we're waiting, another disturbance, this one coming across the great lakes, creating mixed precipitation north of chicago. what's going to happen is this disturbance is mainly going to go north of us. it's got a little shove of energy from down south and southern illinois and trying to make it through the ohio river valley, so i think the trajectory or movement is going to be just north of our area. what we end up with is the mild side of the air mass. for monday and tuesday, temperatures are going to 60 degrees. but we're going to get additional clouds monday and tuesday and also the potential for sprinkles or light rainfall. as early as late tonight, clouds come in and the threat of all of this will be pushed further north and west. more sprinkles and more light
to the boundary. monday afternoon is cloudy. tuesday afternoon we a wait the real swing or push of that air mass which could bring periods of rain. you'll notice the change of colors, yellow, moderate precipitation. that comes in during the day on monday, north and west getting the heaviest of this. and our temperatures will be on the mild side. today upper 40s, tomorrow upper 50s. the big change giving us ten more degrees, but the skies look different. sunshine today, 48. tonight, 41 degrees. more mild than last night. quick moving showers or quick sprinkles coming through tomorrow with temperatures more mild at 58. the accuweather seven-day forecast, i think it pulls this altogether. monday and tuesday are the warmer days with that mild air trying to get in, but clouds in here place. wednesday we get a surge and allows mild air to flow up from the south. thursday, friday, saturday, we have temperatures in the 60s, pretty nice.
the month and a long term pattern that allows for mild temperatures, maybe even above average through the close of april. not every single day is going to be extremely warm, but the last two weeks of april look more above average than the first two weeks, starting with cold air and some chilly days that we had early on in the month. so turn around of april is upon us this week. it is also tax week. taxes are due this week. >> oh, lord. >> my taxes are done in february. >> exactly. there you go. fist bump. >> that >> i procrastinate right down to the deadline. >> you've got a few days left. >> i liked how the high five fist pump -- that was awkward, wasn't it? >> what is that? >> that's like a hamp. a high 5 and a -- anyway.
i don't know why i thought of that. random political tidbits. >> that's pretty good. >> random minute, take that with you to start your day right. a little nugget. >> moving on. let's go to something different. bizarre scene at a burger king in minnesota when police found employees punching out the windows of the restaurant. >> investigators say it was all part of a prank. police say employees got a call are from someone claiming to be from the fire department saying the restaurant could explode because of a gas leak. the caller told workers to relieve the pressure. the manager and other employees believed the caller and of course they began smashing out the windows. similar call was made to burger kings in oklahoma, arizona, and california last week. >> i say you wait until the fire department gets there because if it was an emergency, they would have shown up. what does that? >> these kids are young who work in those fast food joints and they probably freaked out. that's a cruel prank.
