a young woman's murder one week ago. donald trump aims to calm critics by laying out his specific plan for jump starting the economy while hillary clinton finds herself in the center of a new lawsuit. good morning i'm lori stokes. >> and i'm shirlene allicot in for ken rosato. thank you for joining us. it is tuesday august 9th. you're never more than 7 minutes away from weather and traffic and meteorologist bill in the sun. -- it is 6:01. and in 33 seconds the sun will be officially up. high, thin clouds with the sun's rays refracted through the particles. gives us the nice orange in the morning. red sky in the morning means sailor take warning. that could mean showers and thunderstorms are on the way for tomorrow.

clear skies. 63 brookhaven. 65 east hampton. a good day today with a lot of sunshine. very low humidity today, mid- 80s to upper 80s. weather then heather every 7 minutes. mass transit. >> it is doing okay. long island railroad, j ersey transit and metro north all checking in on or close to schedule, no major issues there. and here's is the 59th street bridge making your way across the span. you can see it looks okay, no major issues to report on the span at thisoi but we do have a problem on the bridge queens brown upper level right at the 21st street exit going into queens, this over high tractor trailer, it is on the zebra stripes. once they try to remove it that is where the problems may come in. the disabled vehicle has been cleared away, alternate side of the street parking rules are in effect for today. mass transit doing okay.

you. 6:01. onto the breaking news in the bronx. police just gave us an update on a shootout inside a deli that left one man dead. the gunman shot by police after getting his hands on one of their guns. >> reporter: good morning again lori. police have are a chance to review the surveillance video inside that deli, so they have given us a broader, clearer view, so s what happened out here at 1:08 this morning. the suspect, 30-year-old ephraim guzman was in a deli and he was kicked out. he went across the street to another deli. the worker from the first deli followed him across the street to warn the workers there. the man again started problems.

the phone calling 911. one person went outside and flagged down two police officers. they go inside. guzman struggles with the officers, he is able to grab the officer's gun from the holster. the suspect fires off 15 rounds. one of those bullets fatally hits the worker who had come across the street. he is a 49-year-old man. the second officer fires three times at guzman. he hits him twice in the torso, hospital. the 49-year-old worker pronounced dead. ephraim guzman is in stable condition this morning. i asked the police chief how difficult it is to snatch a gun from a police holster. >> it's not an easy thing to do. if a holster -f if the gun is in the holster, the holster has

it happened. it was grabbed and pulled out of a holster. now neither of those officers were injured. in fact they say the video shows those officers were pretty much shielding the customers so they would not be in the lane of fire. live here in the bedford park section of the bronx. new details on a fire inside a historic building the bowery that sent smoke over lower manhattan. broke out inside the olinger man bank building, reportedly being converted into high-end offices. social media video shows fire on the roof of the 6-story structure. the damage is unclear along with the cause of the fire. the neighborhood of howard beach queens is coming together to share grief and desire for answers into the murder of karina vetrano. one week ago today she went out

eyewitness news reporter diana rocco is live on the scene with reaction from the victim's aunt. >> reporter: shirlene good morning. this is all weighing heavily on the howard beach community. police will be out searching for evidence, and this community is now searching for answers and some reassurance that karina's killer will be found. police will be looking through this heavily weeded area later this morning. at a community meeting last night hundreds of peop saint helen's church. neighbors of the 30-year-old and her family want to know what is going on with this police investigation. vetrano was killed a week ago today while out for an evening jog. police did offer reassurances to those demanding better security at last night's meeting. they have spent the week following leads, interviewing sex offenders in the area and following up on tips from crime

a public defender during his first court appearance. the race for president all about differing visions for the american economy. donald trump and hillary clinton both spoke yesterday in detroit and trump announced a revamped economic plan that will revitalize the nation by cutting taxes for workers and businesses. >> i am proposing an across-the- board income tax reduction, especially for middle income americans. new and really good paying jobs. the rich will pay their fair share, but no one will pay so much that it destroys jobs or undermines our ability, as a nation, to compete. >> trump also blamed clinton for the execution of an iranian nuclear scientist. the man was accused of spying for the u.s., after his name appeared in messages sent to clinton's personal e-mail

for the economy. but clinton fired back saying trump's economic team is made up of wall street bankers and an oil baron all intent on making sure the wealthy don't pay their fair share. >> economists left, right, in the middle all say the same thing. that trump's policies would throw us into a recession. the last thing we need. foundation says trump's tax cuts would amount to some $12 trillion over the next decade that that would increase the national debt. parents of two of the four americans killed in benghazi are suing hillary clinton. the lawsuit blames the deaths on what it calls clinton's extreme carelessness in handling confidential information while she was secretary of state. the clinton campaign responded

silver lake. drought has left the area in incredibly dry shape. a daycare owner is under arrest in connection with the death of a 2-month-old baby in connecticut. nadia carrillo is charged with manslaughter. police were called to the daycare july 12th where they found the baby girl bella maldonado unresponsive. maldonado will a later this month. rapper troy has officially filed a lawsuit against the venue and producer of the concert where video shows him firing a gun. lawyers for roland collins say that the club and the promoter failed to provide proper security during the concert at irving plaza last may. two women were hurt and collins was charged with attempted murder.

death. the city is trying to figure out how to make the brooklyn bridge walkway more spacious. new yorkers headed to and from work and tourists snapping pictures. the bridge caters to thousands of people traveling between brooklyn and manhattan. eyewitness news spoke to one new yorker who says it is difficult to just get to work every day. >> it is lovely in the morning because there are no tourists. but coming back in the evening, nightmare. i just realized my bell is not really working. it is going to be 10 minutes of complete pain in the head. >> fix that bell. in the meantime he could see more space in the future. the d.o.t. has a tentative plan to expand the pathway over the lane. they are studying how they can make the walkway large tore

police capture a suspect that ends with a deli clerk dead. >> reporter: good morning again ladies. police have reviewed video from inside the a & m deli, the one you see there behind me. so they have been able to give

at 1:08 this morning. they say the suspect, 30-year- old ephraim guzman, was inside the nand a, deli asking for money or a cell phone being disruptive. they kicked him out of that deli so he went across the street to the a & m deli. but a worker followed him across the street to warn the workers. the video shows people inside, customers, srt calling 911. officers go inside, and guzman begins a scuffle with one of the officers, he is able to grab the officer's gun from his holster. the officer tries to get it back, but as the suspect is falling to the floor he has the gun, he fires 15 rounds and one of those bullets fatally struck the worker who followed him across the street. he is a 49-year-old man, his identity has not been released

tractor trailer. this isn't causing much of an issue at this point. however they are going to have to remove it from the span. that is when the problems will occur. sawmill north near grant street, we have an unauthorized tractor trailer that was removed from the roadway, so that is good news. 5 to 10 minutes across-the- board at our hudson river crossings. street cleaning rules in effect. lori, over to you. heather thank you. bystanders were injured when they were struck by stray bullets in the bronx. this happened last night in the mount hope section. police say a 20-year-old woman and a 63-year-old man were shot when a gunman opened fire in the area they are expected to be okay and so far no arrests. a new york city woman is found dead in massachusetts after she went out for a walk.

a homicide. vanessa marcot worked here in new york city for google but went home to massachusetts to visit her mother. the 27-year-old left for a walk on sunday afternoon but never came back. her body was later found a half mile away in the woods, her feet and hands reportedly burned. >> we have a horrible set of facts, a horrible set of circumstances right now. we are going do everything we can to make sure everying is done. we have to let the police do their job now. >> google released a stadium saying they are stunned by what happened, adding she was known for her passion, volunteer work and love of boston sports. that homicide has echoes of last week's unsolved murder of a jogger in new york city. 30-year-old karina vetrano assaulted and killed while she

good morning. police will be back out here later this morning going through every inch of this heavily weeded area looking for evidence. it has now been 7 days since the murder of karina vetrano and the community came both last night. hundreds of people crowded sane helen's church looking for neighbors. neighbors want to know what's going on with the police investigation. while out for an evening jog in the spring creek national park. police officers reassured those demanding better security saying they have spent the week following leads and interviewing sex offenders in the area. but they are keeping many details of this investigation to themselves. >> i am not going to go into specifics into what was recovered at the time. just understand that the individual or individuals that did this horrendous act might

told this happened around 6:00 this morning. apparently a person was slashed on the street. the person has been taken to lennox hill hospital with lacerations to the face. two male suspects may have fled toward the park. nypd has just called a mobilization here we'll be seeing a lot more police here as the investigation into there gets underway. 6:37. the new york city health department will be out in full force again today, spraying mosquito killing pesticide. trucks will spray in parts of brooklyn and queens. officials are trying to prevent the spread of west nile and the potential of the zika virus. yesterday the health department conducted aerial spraying in four outer boroughs. we have learned 250 delta flights have been canceled this

new this morning a queens man is facing charges after police say he attacked an officer with a knife. the nypd says crosby craig stabbed an officer in the hand as they tried to get him out of a bathroom yesterday. he had bee before the attack. nypd negotiators per waded him out of the bathroom after -- persuaded him out of the bathroom after three hours. new video of the suspect in an apparent bias attack on the subway. this is the man police say yelled homophobic slurs at another man saturday night on the uptown 2 train. when it pulled into 110th street he punched the victim in the face. the two men then fought on the

stabbed twice. the attacker fled. three girls are recovering after a terrifying 35-foot fall from a ferris wheel near knoxville, tennessee. the girls were at a county fair when the ferris wheel got stuck. they were thrown out, hitting metal bars on their way down. all the girls were rushed to the hospital but were responsive. they are still though in serious condition. also learning more about boy in kansas city. police say caleb schwab died from a neck injury when he fell off a giant slide sunday. caleb, the son of a kansas lawmaker was in the front of a raft, riding with two women behind him when he somehow flew out of the ride. the water park is providing grief counselors for employees and guests. the park will be open tomorrow but the ride will remain closed. donald trump has phoned in

6:53. new this morning, a special delivery, courtesy of the nypd. >> officers from brooklyn's 62 precinct delivered a baby girl right outside their station house. a woman in labor had parked there and her aunt had run into

help. the baby's head was already crowning so it was quick work. paramedics got mom and the baby to the hospital and they are both doing well. a deli cook shot and killed during a struggle with a suspect and police.
