baby thrown to rescuers below. tonight they're all safe thanks in part to a brave and quick thinking young girl. >> eyewitness news reporter josh einiger is in sayreville tonight with their amazing escape. >> it's a long way down from that second floor of this building for these young kids to jump to escape these flames but tonight their family is crediting the first responding police officer with catching them and saving their lives. smoke and towering flames -- >> i tried to get up the stairway but it was fully engulfed. >> reporter: sayreville police officer brian gay knew there would be no time. family members trapped upstairs started to jump. >> i looked up in the air and she was already jumping. as she was on her way down i caught her. >> reporter: the fire broke out around 2:00 this afternoon on jacobsen street. gay was the first on scene but might never have made it in time
through your mind? >> that i was going to die. >> reporter: the 12-year-old lived in the house and was there with her cousins and aunt when she heard the fire alarm, led everyone to the bathroom and jumped out the window to call for help. >> if i didn't call the cops right away we'd probably all be dead. >> reporter: when officer gay arrived he caught one child who jumped and broke the fall of another. >> you could see the fear on their faces as they were coming down. they said drop the baby. and they dropped the baby and caught the baby. at work when the fire broke out. aside from each other, all they have left are a few family photos and a ton of gratitude. >> the first person you call when you're in trouble is the cops. all these people risk all their lives and all their families to come save my kid in my house. >> you can see the house has been condemned as the fire remains under investigation. still no caused released publically by the fire marshal's office.

he just loved public service. >> the whole crash just so tragic, at least three people remain hospitalized tonight including a 3-year-old. the scene of an alleged assault. two women say instead of getting x-rays they were sexually assaulted by an x-ray technician at kings county hospital in east flatbush. here's eyewitness news reporter jim dolan with new details. >> reporter: the victims were who were there for x-rays of their legs. both were allegedly sexually assaulted while they were alone with the x-ray technician who has worked at the kings county since 2003. >> he probably did it for a long time over and over again. >> think there could be other victims, right? >> might be and they might not have known about it. >> reporter: both incidents have happened on saturday and larry jones was arrested shortly after the second. he's a certified x-ray technician though he has a

new at 11:00, a heartfelt plea tonight from a vietnam vet who wants his dog back. john nevarez tied up his dog chewo outside a supermarket in the bronx. shih tzu away. but this isn't just any dog. this is the veteran's service dog. here's eyewitness news reporter carolina leid. >> he's like my life. i can't even explain to you what he means to me. i just want my dog back. >> reporter: john says his dog chulo is the perfect example of man's best friend. the shih tzu is not only a companion, he protects this
he starts barking and i got to go take my needle. >> reporter: sunday afternoon around 4:30 john tied up chulo outside the associated supermarket on third avenue in the morrisania section of the bronx. he usually takes the service dog inside but figured he would be quick. watch on surveillance video as a man unties chulo and walks away with him. store employees can't believe it. >> that's like his best friend. we all know the dog. we know him by his name. his name is chulo. we found out. it was really hurtful because we know how special the dog is to him. >> i've had him since he was six months old. it was me and my wife. she died. i'm all alone. but i promised to take care of him. >> reporter: now john stands outside the store answering phone calls from the flyers he's handed out. he's offering a $2,000 reward. the money he planned to use to pay his rent. >> i would go homeless for him.
