this is what most of us saw early yesterday morning. a heavy dose of snow. this is what it looked like in portsmouth for a while. it didn't stick around long. but it left a mess on the roads. so how are they looking now? we sent 10 on your side's rico bush to check things out. riding around during the

for slick spots and it's safe to say the roads are in great shape. however, don't let the clear roads fool you - ice could be an issue now. as temperatures are expected to drop below freezing this morning, the wintry mix that lasted from yesterday could still freeze to the roads, causing some black ice. black ice can form when wet road conditions freeze with cold temperatures - and it's dangerous because you can't see it. last night, v-dot crews salted and sanded bridges, ramps and overpasses hoping to eliminate that problem, but you can't always be to sure about getting it all. that's why trucks are on standby and all seven cities have supplies stocked and ready to go, if needed. depends on what kind of precipitation we are getting and what the temperatures are. when temperatures stay in the

getting and when " 10:43 during the snow fall yesterday, virginia state police responded to at least 11 accident on interstates across the seven cities. this morning, so far there hasn't been any reports of accidents due to the weather. but, as always you should still drive with caution. live in portsmouth, rico bush, 10 on your side. icy conditions and speed led to a deadly crash in sussex county over the weekend. state police say 74-year-old nancy leigh smith died when her car crashed into a tree on route 31 - east of route 617 yesterday afternoon. another person in the car was also hurt. troopers believe smith may have been speeding. she was not wearing a seatbelt. developing this morning, investigators near richmond are still trying to figure out what started a weekend house fire that killed 5 people, including two children. it happened in chesterfield county. ten people were inside at the time. firefighters worked

out all. five adults survived. but paramedics say four people died at the scene. the fifth died at the hospital. the victims are a 1-year-old boy, a 3- year-old girl and three adults. :21 - 29 runs 8 there was 6 guys in my room telling me to get out of there... there's a fire. i thought i was dreaming and they were like no seriously you gotta go there is significant fire damage to the house. the red cross is helping the surviving family members with another place to stay this morning. two firefighters went to the hospital with minor burns, along with a police officer who was cut at the scene. no one wants to finish last. yet that is exactly where hampton roads is when it comes to creating jobs compared to areas with a similar population. a recent study by the bureau of economic analysis shows our area has made little progress in creating jobs over the last few years. we've recently seen stores closing and massive shipyard layoffs. but there are people out there who are working hard to make a change.

it was a successful launch, but failed landing. this space-x rocket exploded when it fell over at the end of its mission. it launched yesterday morning off the coast of los angeles. but then -- the jason three rocket landed on a floating barge in the pacific ocean. a support leg broke, causing the rocket to topple over and burst into flames. space x founder elon musk said the failed landing may have been caused by ice build-up from heavy fog during lift-off. no people were hurt in the explosion. this morning we are working to learn more that made an emergency landing in our area. it's after 10 on your side heard from norfolk international airport says a united airlines plane was heading from newark, new jersey to santo domingo in the dominican republic. it made an emergency landing just before noon yesterday. a spokesperson with the airport said there was a problem with the boeing 757's right engine. the plane landed safely with more than

board. passengers tell us the airline is going to "try" and fly them out this afternoon. developing this morning, the u-s state department is working to locate at three american contractors kidnapped in iraq. an iraqi security official said a group of gunmen grabbed the americans from an apartment in baghdad. officials in iraq's capital did not offer any details but said they were working with the u-s embassy to marines, whose two helicopters crashed. it happened during nighttime training last week. the coast guard has searched for three days around-the-clock looking for survivors. the coast guard says it has no intention of calling off or suspending the search despite the high surf. cg= capt. jim jenkins, u.s. coast guard < we've been searching 24 hours a day since we were notified and got on scene. > < we are still searching for survivors. that's an important point to make. > crews collected debris over the weekend bbelieved to be from the two

than 18-thousand square miles. police in st. louis are investigating what led up to a deadly officer-involved shooting at a fast food restaurant. investigators in missouri say an officer shot and killed a suspect in an armed robery at a k-f-c. a witnessed flagged down the officer and told them about the robbery. the officer confronted the 52- year-old suspect, who then raised a handgun towards the officer. investigators are looking at surveillance video from inside the k-f-c. this morning many people in flint, michigan are scared to drink the water. it's after tests found the water supply was contaminated by lead. reverend jesse jackson led a rally for justice yesterday to protest the governor's response to the crisis. the governor appointed an emergency manager in 2014 to flint. the manager then switched the city's water source to save money. officials reversed the move when tests found increased lead leves in residential water and children's blood. reverend jackson called

our winter weather coverage continues. 10 on your side's rico bush has been riding around during the overnight hours, checking for slick spots. rico, how are things looking this morning? don, lex, for the most part things are looking great on the roads. driving around town, we've seen some minor wet spots - nothing really to be alarmed about. however, the chances of black ice could still be an issue. over the weekend, we talked with officials in all seven cities - their trucks are on standby in case

freezing this morning. black ice can form when we road conditions freeze with cold temperatures. in hampton roads, we've seen a relatively mild winter so far, but you know things can change in minutes - that's why cities like virginia beach say they're ready to go if the wintry mix left over from yesterday starts to create problems. drew lankford / virginia beach public works c0011 9:41 "we've been ready since october we have 3 thousand tons of salt and sand mixed. and have another 3 thousand tons of material ready if we need it." 9:52 butt to 11:56:27 "nobody is letting their breath out infact some of the biggest snows we have had have come at the end of january or later." 12:01 last night, v-dot crews applied salt and sand to bridges, ramps and overpasses. they also spot treated primary roads in the area. we'll continue to be your eye out of the roads all the morning. in the meantime, make sure to watch those bridges, overpasses.

place. a hampton man is in custody this morning, accused of shooting four people in gloucester, killing one of them. 18-year-old dijon whitter. they say witnesses helped track him down. the shootings happened early sunday morning after a large party near ditchley road and gil llane. that's in the ware neck area of gloucester county. investigators say one of the victims flagged down a driver near the shooting scene. county ((c81 32:09)) "i couldn't move in the house, so i didn't think that this many people ((c80 29:45-29:55)) "the

chipotle says it will close more than 19- hundred stores next month to re-train employees on food safety. its all in response to the e-coli and salmonella outbreaks that sickened more than 50 people late last year. there's a federal investigation into where the outbreak started. sales at the mexican restaurant chain have plummeted. and the company's stock has dropped more than 30 percent in december. a utah police officer died and another was hurt after a shootout. it happened yesterday after a car chase near salt lake city. police say officer doug barney died when a suspect shot him in the head. the other officer was shot three times but is expected to survive. police have a man and woman in custody. they believe the man was the shooter, and the woman was his accomplice. this morning, police in tennessee are desperate to find a missing toddler. investigators say 2-year-old noah chamberlin disappeared thursday while hiking with his grandmother and 4- year-old sister near the family's home. authorities are using tracking dogs, but so

into neighborhoods on florida's west coast. in sarasota, first responders rescued a woman from her collapsed house. florida governor rick scott surveyed the damage yesterday. the strongs winds even damaged this sign outside a cocoa beach surf shop. it looks like something out of the movie, sharknado! the sign used to show a shark statue with a half-bitten surfboard in its mouth. the sign is destroyed, but the shark survived. emergency calls for help went unanswered at a florida 9-1-1 center. that's because an operator was on the phone, ordering a pizza! 0-7 pizza shop: pick up or delivery please. operator: it's going to be for delivery please. operator: it's a business. the sunrise police department. as that was happening, a fort lauderdale business was calling for help for someone in their office having a seizure. the food order lasted for 8 minutes. after an investigation, her supervisors acknowledge she should have hung up with the pizza place when she saw the thought there would be more than one person answering the phone. i can't believe there is just the one lady." butt :49 - 1:01 runs 12 operator: and everything--all the fixings.
