we're following developing news out of northern virginia this morning. a suspect shot and killed an officer on her first day on the job. two other officers were also shot. it happened in woodbridge in prince william county last night. a suspect shot and killed officer ashley guindon and injured two others. officer guindon was a former marine, who had just joined the force friday. she died during her first shift with the department. guindon and the other officers responded to the suspect's house for a call about a domestic shooting. kids who live in the neighborhood were playing outside when they heard the first gunshots. (no super) :20 i was so we started running... and then when we got up
tried to come over here and they said no go back go back so we went into other officers shot are recovering in the hospital. police arrested the suspect, and we are working to learn his name. the associated press is reporting he's in the military. the commonwealth's attorney for prince william county says the suspect will be charged with capital murder. virginia law allows the death penalty for the murder of a police officer. stay with us during our next two hours on the air as we work to learn more about the shooting. new this morning, an 18-year-old man is in the hospital after someone shot him in newport news. police say the man from carrollton got shot in the leg on jefferson avenue near dresden drive around 11 last night. they say he's expected to recover. police are still looking for whoever
also in newport news -- someone shot a 19- year-old man twice in his right leg. this one happened on 25th street just before 12:30 yesterday afternoon. the victim went to the hospital - but is expected to live. we're working to learn more from police about suspects. if you have information about either of the shootings - call the crime line. now to decision 2016 -- and the results from another democratic primary. hillary clinton came away with her third victory of her campaign. she beat vermont senator bernie sanders by a landslide in south carolina. clinton says the win is a personal redemption for her. she lost a bitter primary fight in the state to barack obama back in 2008. but this time, it was all clinton. she dominated among african-american and female voters. during her celebration, she talked about the upcoming super tuesday. she says her campaign is "going national." when we stand together there is no barrier too big to break. we've now gone through
national. this is the second win in a row for clinton, after a close caucus in nevada last weekend. senator sanders wasn't in south carolina yesterday. he kept campaigning in texas, and then held a rally in minnesota. sanders congratulated clinton on the win, "saying sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, and tonight we lost." but sanders says he intends to make a big pick up when it comes to politics on a given night sometimes you win sometimes you lose tonight we lost, i stake and we intend to win many many of them.
of the four states that voted so far, sanders only has one win. he took the new hampshire primary. senator sanders will join meet the press later this morning. he will sit down with chuck todd and talk about the results in south carolina and talk about his campaign heading in to super tuesday. you can catch that interview starting at 9, right after the today show. meanwhile, virginia is getting ready for super tuesday. and local politcians are throwing their support behind presidential candidates. that includes congressman bobby scott -- who stumped for hillary clinton in hampton. about 50 people turned out to the y.h. thomas community center yesterday. representative scott says he has worked closely with clinton in washington. he says he supports her stances on defense spending, education and the environment and believes she has the experience needed for the top job. to fight the zika virus. in the u.s. - there have been more than 100 cases of the zika virus reported. the task force will work with local officials on mosquito surveillance and control programs before mosquito season starts. virginia has three reported cases of the virus. north carolina doesn't have any. florida has the highest number of cases reported at 28. governor mcauliffe also signed a gun compromise bill into law. the legislation is a result of a compromise between repulicans and democrats in the state house. the new law will allow more out-of- state permit holders to legally carry guns in the commonwealth. it also changes voluntary background checks at gun shows. the governor calls it a "new era" in virginia, that'll make people safer. violence at a k-k-k rally. why police say -- they're defending both sides. and -- some middle schoolers take revenge on their teacher.
a ku klux klan rally in california turned violent. police arrested 13 people after klansmen and people protesting them starting fighting. three people got stabbed and another person go beat up. police say the klansmen were attacked by the protesters during the planned rally. authorities say three protesters got stabbed. one of the klansmen used the eagle on the top of a flag pole to stab one of they say were stomping klansmen on the ground. police say no matter what people believe in, their anaheim police dept. :10 amendment... and we can't be getting in the middle of
that." at least two people are facing charges for assault with a deadly weapon. police in ohio are looking into a shooting that left two brothers dead. police think it happened before six saturday morning in canton, which is about an hour south of cleveland. police say someone shot 42-year-old christopher trent and his 40-year-old brother allen several times. they died at the scene. loved ones of the victims can't believe what happened. trent says: "i never thought it would happen "that news hasn't come up yet, but i know eventually it'll all come out why they were here." police are still looking for whoever shot the brothers. deputies in texas shot and killed a man they say stole a truck, then lead
on a chase. investigators say it started yesteday morning, when the man shot out the back window of the truck so he could get inside and steal it. deputies chased him for miles. authorities say the man ran off the road after the chase, pulled out a gun, and started shooting at the deputies. they fired back and killed him. weapon toward the deputies. the deputies and the dps trooper, they were driving pretty fast and luckily, no one was hurt." investigators have not released the man's name -- but they say he was in his 20s. and police in utah shot a 16 year old boy last night. police say the teen was fighting with another person when they showed up to try to break it up. that's when one of the two officers shot the teen. that made people in the neighborhood
the streets and starting yelling and started throwing rocks at police. a friend of the teenager says he was with him when walking, like, towards stop, um, drop it, one time and as he was turning around, they shot how the teenager is doing. deputies in indiana are investigating the shooting death of a three-year-old boy. they say he somehow got shot in a house friday afternoon. investigators are not saying how the shooting happened, or whether it was an accident. but a deputy says what first responders saw was horriffic. deputies say it's still not clear if anyone will be charged. people in kalamazoo released hundreds of balloons into the sky last night. it was a way for them to remember the victims of a shooting spree last week that killed six people. hundreds of people gathered at a car dealership to honor richard and tyler smith. police say jason dalton shot and killed them in the parking lot during his five hour rampage last saturday. the crowd also honored the four others killed, and two injured. dalton is currently in jail, charged with six counts of murder. today: mainly sunny and mild. highs in the low-mid 60s. wind: sw

three middle school students in florida are in serious trouble. they face felony charges for allegedly poisoning their teacher. authorities say a 12-year-old girls was upset about being punished by her teacher earleier in the week. so, she and her friend went out and bought some red pepper flakes. investigators say one of the students distracted the teacher, while another grabbed a soda off the teacher's desk. the third dumped the pepper in. the teacher then drank
deputies arrested the girls friday and took them to a juvenile detention center. the teacher is expected to recover. drivers in indiana got a surprise on the highway. a small plane made an emergency landing on i-65 yesterday morning. indiana state police say the plane landed around 11:30. the pilot got it off the road and into the median. three people were on the plane. nobody was hurt. traffic was slow on i-65 for several hours before the plane could be moved out of the way. if you're planning to take a trip to disney world or disneyland soon, you may have to pay a little more, depending on when you go. disney rolled out seasonal prices for its parks yesterday. the changes will let visitors look at a calendar eight to eleven months ahead of time, to see which days cost what. for example, officials say days at magic kingdom at walt disney world will cost between 105 and 124 dollars. the prices will be set depending on how busy the parks are going to be on particular days.

an elderly couple lost their home in a fire. it happened around 1:30 saturday afternoon on corinthia drive in newport news. thats in the denbigh section of the city it looks like initally the flames started in the garage. a spokesman forthe fire department says one of the people living in the home heard explosions in the garage, the flames spread up to the 2nd floor through the main wall. both the older man and woman inside escaped. according to the battalion chief neither of them has any injuries. fire crews quickly got the fire under control. battalion chief william shelton/ newport news fire department c0017 1:17:53 "alot of it has to do with how the overly cold or hot today. it really wasnt a whole

san francisco may not be a place you'd think about when it comes to snow. but, it was a winter wonderland at the zoo there yesterday. workers used machines to bring in bags of ice and make a new habitat for the zoo's 35-year-old polar bear "you-lou." he is the oldest resident at the zoo, and the oldest polar bear in captivity. he has lived at the zoo since 19-85, and zoo keepers say he enjoys this event every year. philadelphia transit police just released a video of a man trying to jump the turnstyle in a train station. the key word is trying. this happened earlier this week. officials think the man was drunk and trying to avoid the two dollar and twenty five cent fare by jumping over the turnstyle he miscalculates his jump just a little bit, and ends up getting tangled in the metal bars./ he eventually wiggled his way out and got on the
