>> announcer: nbc10 breaking news. told to take shelter as gunshots rang out on a florida state campus. this morning, students are describing the scene when a gunman opened fire. the strike has started. these baggage handlers are protesting at philadelphia international airport right now. we'll tell you what they're upset about. and how this could impact flights that are leaving and arriving today. and a tiny bit warmer today than yesterday. but still a cold start as we take a live look outside this morning. enjoy the brief break from the bitter cold because bill says it will be back. but a big warmup. good morning and welcome to "nbc10 news." i'm tracy davidson. >> and i'm krchris cato. let's begin with bill henley with the "first alert" forecast. >> it's 20 degrees yesterday, we're about 13, 14 degrees warmer than that in philadelphia. but it's still cold north and west, in fact some spots in the

low 20s but not center city. that is a live view from the adventure aquarium. there are some clouds overhead. so the temperatures will not go lower in philadelphia. philadelphia, even though it's warmer, still dealing with windchills. the wind is blowing, feels like 20 degrees in philadelphia international. while there's no wind in northeast philadelphia but no wind in pottstown and allentown as the temperatures drop down there to the 20s this morning. but a warmup -- yes, it will be warmer than yesterday afternoon. we'll see 40s during the noon time hour. climb into the low 40s early in the afternoon. we'll see it hour by hour with the future weather when i come back in less than ten minutes. right now, we're checking with "first alert" traffic reporter jillian mele. good morning, jillian. >> good morning, bill. right now, we have two separate accidents with vehicles hitting deer. new hadtown road and buck road. the other is huntington valley, byberry road.

and all looking good on route 100 but we're following an accident out of berks county that's been with us for a while this morning. 422 remains closed between pineland road and fairview chapel road. if you need to get around that, take lincoln road as your alternate. tracy. there has been a shooting in the library. stay where you are, we'll be coming to each floor and taking care of everybody. >> that was the announcement made on the campus of florida state university after a gunman fired shots at a library. three people injured. the shooter is dead. just in the past five minutes, florida state announced campus is open but all classes are cancelled today. it happened overnight at the fsu campus in tallahassee. officials will give us an update at 6:00 this morning. here's what we know. police confronted the gunman, ordered him to drop his weapon but he fired one shot at officers who then returned fire killing that gunman.

three other people were hurt during the shooting but it's not known if the wounded were shot by the gunman. it happened early this morning inside the campus library. a lockdown has been lifted. the school said on a twitter account that the area is now secure. happening now, locally, baggage handlers are protesting outside of philly international. part of a one-day strike. they went out early. they said it was going to happen at 7:00. it just started a little bit ago. nbc10's katy zachry is looking into what it means for travelers. katy. >> reporter: take a look behind me, here is the group. >> no peace.

>> reporter: you can hear the protesters right there chanting, it's a one-day strike. they went out early. katy zachry is on scene. we'll get an update. they all work for one company. this will not affect travelers there. you can count on nbc10 to bring you the developments in the strike. >> we're following three other big stories including this one. >> we'll be monitoring the casino crisis in atlantic city. workers hope that revel may open, came to an end. we'll also let you know about the outcome on sports betting. those in the state and the ncaa and major professional sports leagues are arguing whether the temporary ban in new jersey should be extended.

the leagues don't want to see t -- the department has collected hundreds of phones over the past two months, those phones will be distributed to victims of domestic violence in case they need to use them for emergency calls. boy, quite a messup here. a marijuana mistake. a delaware county store manager got a big surprise. a big green surprise when he opened the mail. and he said this isn't the first time this has happening. and a crash connection. a new study reveals the impact of a good night's sleep on your teenage driver. cold start this morning. we're back in the 20s and 30s. and watch something clouds move into the area. right now 37 degrees at 5:35.

37 degrees, 14 degrees warmer in philadelphia than it was yesterday. but not everybody is seeing warmer weather. north and west, temperatures dropped in the 20s. you see the clouds that are moving through. nothing falling from the clouds, and they will be clearing out. we'll wind out with lots of sunshine. future weather, 10:00, upper 30s for trenton and wilmington. by early this afternoon, we'll be in the 40s but it's not going to be much warmer than that today. normally, high 50s. today, 40. but that is about 10 degrees warmer than it was yesterday afternoon. the numbers start coming down late this afternoon as the colder air starts to move back into the area. 5:00, 36 degrees. and then as we go through the evening hours, the temperatures plunge north and west in the 20s by 11:00 tonight, just below freezing. in philadelphia. and we will be in the 20s to

start with. tomorrow morning, we'll see sunshine to warm up in the 40s. the wind will be picking up this afternoon after we peak in the low 40s early this afternoon, that's when the colder air starts to come back but there's a big turnaround for the weekend. the seven-day forecast when i'm bark in less than ten minutes. 5:39. let's check your ride to work on this thursday morning. cold and dry. >> dry and hopefully everything is smooth out there. nbc10's "first alert" traffic reporter jillian mele has a look at the roads. jillian. >> good morning. depends on where you're traveling. this is the boulevard and fox street. nothing to report on the boulevard. we do have a number of accidents. this accident at millville and buffalo. it actually hit a deer. same thing in berks county, an accident, 422 closed in both directions between pineland road and fairview chapel road. lincoln road is your alternate.

for drivers in new jersey a quiet look at 273 right at 295. we have had normal construction on 295 but nothing for slowdown. new research shows that teenagers who have an early start time have increased risk of accidents. the crash rates were 29% higher at the school that started earlier. reedge issers say less sleep may be the cause and an earlier bedtime might help. more fallout for bill cosby, this morning, another network dropped the comedian from their lineup. and a different kind of threat at philadelphia international airport, experts say this found in not one but two bags, a little dangerous.

at 5:43, 37 degrees outside, nbc10 is following a protest going on right now at philadelphia international airport. baggage handlers have walked off the job as part of a one-day strike. nbc10's katy zachry is live at the airport this morning. katy. >> reporter: hi, tracy, take a look behind me. here's the group that's striking. they started nearly two hours ahead of the scheduled protest time. these men and women you're looking at, they're baggage handler, wheelchair attendants

and handlers in and out of the ticket line. the big question is, will airlines be affected by the stoppage. the airlines we talked to, said, no. but the workers say, yes. they are responsible for directing your luggage to the right plane. they're subcontracting workers who make minimum wage do not get vacation or sick time. they're protesting all of those points today. most of the airlines here at the philly international use these workers. >> it can have an effect on the travelers because when they get to their final destination they're going to think that their bag is there. unless u.s. air can come up with a solution how to get the bags on the planes i don't know how it's going to get there. >> reporter: american airlines tells nbc10 that about 50 of these workers are scheduled to be on the job today. they say airline employees will handle their duties. reporting live at philly

international. customs and protections agents found a pest in bags. this is the carpet beetle. it damages grains, cereals and food. they found it in people's luggage. both times, the beetles were in dried goods cared from sudan and qatar. agents destroyed the beetles. in the sexual assault allegations against bill cosby, more networks are pulling cosby from the air. nbc scrapped plans for a cosby sitcom. and netflix postponed the premiere of a new standup comedy special. three women came out this week that cosby sexually assaulted

them. and from the ap earlier this month. >> on a separate note, i have to ask about your name coming up on the news recently regarding a comedian -- >> no, no, we don't answer that. >> okay. i just wanted to ask if you wanted to respond at all about whether any of that was true? >> there's no response. >> cosby has never faced charges in connection with those allegations. >> we're following that story and more from across the country through our network of photographers and reporters this morning. nbc had 10's vai sikahema is live in the digital operations center. vai, you're also monitoring the shooting in the campus. three injured, one dead. that's the total now. following the breaking news over the last hour and a half. we've just learned that within the last half hour we've learned the conditions of two victims. hospital officials are saying one person is in critical condition. another is listed in stable condition. no word on that third victim. all three were hurt when a

gunman opened fire at a campus on florida state university. florida state's president just released a statement in the last ten minutes or so. we'll have that coming up in the 6:00 hour. buffalo braces for a second wave of lake-effect snow that will hit that area. more than four feet of snow is already on the ground there. stranding dozens of cars on the highways that you so there. today, amtrak resumed some of the train service that it suspended because of the snow. and president obama will address the nation on immigration reform. the president said he will take executive action to allow about 5 million undocumented immigrants to stay here in the u.s. none of the three major broadcast networks will carry the president's prime time speech. we'll continue to monitor the stories and bring them to you as they happen. live in the digital operations center, vai sikahema, nbc10. former senator jim webb is ask-cing a run for fred in 2016.

yesterday, webb announced a website for his exploratory committee. he said solutions are tied to leadership. philadelphia's race for mayor now has more candidates, anthony williams and former district attorney lynn abraham announced their candidacy yesterday. they join terry guillen, the former head of the philadelphia redevelopment authority and ken trujillo, the former solicitor. trujillo attended a panel meeting at temple university. nbc10 moderated that event. trujillo spoke to us about the importance of learning. >> education is not just a political issue, it's the seminal issue of our generation. it's something that we have to get right. it's been the differencemaker in my life and the differencemaker for everybody that i know who has been successful. >> and trujillo said it's time for the city to elect a bold new

leader. talk about special delivery glps this morning, philadelphia police are looking into a marijuana mistake that came via fedex. yesterday, for the second day in a row, a store owner called police after this, worth $300,000. the manager of city blue said the packages were addressed to the store but not clearly the recipient. >> somebody is missing a lot of marijuana on the streets of our community. >> police believe the sender expected the boxes of marijuana would be intercepted outside the store. after the investigation wraps up, police say they will destroy the drugs. >> announcer: now your nbc10 "first alert" weather with meteorologist bill henley. >> moving out the door right now, it's not as cold as yesterday for most of the area. and moving into the area this morning, some clouds, you can see them. this view from the mellon bank

building in center city. clouds will not last all day. 37, philadelphia, will be in the 40s this afternoon. but it is colder north and west where they've been making snow. this is blue mountain. what a snowy scene. looks like winter, doesn't it? actually winter is a month away. a month from tomorrow. temperatures in the 20s for areas north and west. wilmington, northeast philadelphia just above freezing. blue bell is at 30. 31 degrees at glenside. go inland you'll see the temperatures are even colder. 20s for collegeville. and eagleville. with readings in the middle 20s for upper providence and gilbertson both at 25 degrees right now. there's a cold start. we're watching the clouds north and west produce a few fleur police the pocono mountains. most of us not reaching the area, the area is very dry this morning. we'll see sunshine and all of this still producing cold air. that's going to come our way tomorrow. the cold will make a come back.

for today, though, into the 40s, where normally, we'd be in the 50s for this time of year. but that's an improvement from yesterday where we were stuck in the 30 as yesterday afternoon. tomorrow, the cold blast is back. windchill of 36 after a morning low of 25. saturday morning it will be cold once again. down to 23 degrees. then sunshine, warming us into the 40s on saturday. and near 60 degrees sunday afternoon. depends on when the rain comes in. if the rain holds off until evening time, we'll see 60 degrees on sunday. turning even warmer with a chance of showers on monday. and the temperatures start coming down on tuesday. the cold returns wednesday. >> just in time for pre-thanksgiving travel. speaking of travel, let's go to jillian mele. >> you have to watch out for the deer. this is the third accident of the morning involving a vehicle that hit a deer. destone drive, another one buck road at milltown road. as one in huntingdon valley at

byberry road but that's cleared. and heading out to berks county, 422 still closed between pineland voted and fairview chapel road because of an accident. you can take lincoln road. 422 in montgomery county is looking really good. the eastbound side by route 29. the your drive time from oaks to 202 takes about seven minutes right now. 76 is still quiet in both directions and so is the blue route. chris. a south jersey landmark will partially reopen after that big fire earlier this week. we'll tell you about the changes customers can expect to see at the market, as the investigation into what caused the fire continues. and america's best bathrooms, longwood gardens, did they flush the competition? everyone wants to know. we will share the results of this fascinating contest when we take you county by county.

four minutes before 6:00 right now. a live look at cape may. sun rise less than an hour away. a chilly morning but wait until you hear what's happening with temperatures come monday. bill henley has details. and county by county coverage this morning. a stabbing happened in camden county monday at the building that houses new jersey's child protection and welfare agency in camden. according to "courier-post" union leaders say security at the children and family office has been increased. the victim leah coleman is in critical condition. the suspect is charged with attempted murder. in burlington county part of the columbus farmers market will reopen for business. two days after that massive fire. here's the video from skyforce 10 that day.

the fire destroyed ten businesses inside the market. investigators still don't know the cause of the fire but they say it does not appear to be criminal. the outdoor plea market mrb owi open today. in montgomery county we do have video of the fire that broke out in the abington ymca. this happened in the day care center. the building was empty at the time. officials believe a faulty air conditioner could be the blame. in fact, we found out the model was recalled a few years ago. the ymca said they weren't aware of that. >> the units were installed or purchased by an installer or contractor, that information may not be relayed directly to you as a homeowner or business owner. that may be relay to the contractor who installed the unit. >> now, the ym ca has said they've stopped using those unit us. for a full list, logon to
5:58 am in new castle county it's beginning to look a lot like christmas. volunteers yesterday set up the weekend's festival of trees in new castle county. the event raises money for the dwir hospice. workers say it's a lot of fun. >> it's a convenient weekend. there's not a lot of holiday partying goes on. we'd like to think we're the first one to start the season. >> if you can't make it out to the festival, the hospice will host similar events in coming days. one of the favorite attractions a somewhat coveted title i guess. longwood gardens in kennett square. wall to wall coverage. america's best restroom is the title here. voters close longwood gardens out of a group of ten finalists. it features a green wall and ecofriendly designs. here's photos. longwood is the most visited public gardens in america.

but now its bathrooms may become the most visited. visitors in those restrooms will see translucent glass inside. the glass brings in natural light and reduces the need for electricity. the company's senior marketing manager john engle said, quote, the team at longwood has proven it understands the value of a restroom that's creative and memorable by guests." guys i've got to tell you, i've visited that restroom. it's worthy of award. i've changed a baby in there. there's plenty of space. a nice facility. tracy, vai, you need to visit. >> i've not been to the restroom but i can tell you that longwood gardens is a great place to visit. especially around the holidays. >> there's a thousand gardens there, fountains. >> they have a mum showing but it changes over the holidays. you're watching "nbc10
