saturday. customers are eager to use those gift cards before they lose value. customers should expect heavy discounts on clothing which has not been a hot seller this year. for those of you planning returns -- and there's plenty of you -- here is some simple advice. know the store's policy bring your receipt and bring your i.d. more retailers are asking for it, to cut down on fraud, which is estimated to cost the industry $4 billion a year. the national retail federation had forecast holiday sales this year would jump more than 4%. today for retailers here should be crucial to meet that target. >> gabe gutierrez on the story for us this morning. now to that tragic ambush of two police officers in new york. wake for rafael ramos as more information leads to a new

arrest. >> reporter: good morning, tamron. a real sense of tragedy to what should have been a week of celebration and tradition. since last weekend's ambush killings of two officers new york city police are stepping up efforts to enhance their own safety after receiving threats, resulting in arrests of at least six people. officials said one man was overheard on a phone threatening to kill more cops, search turned up weapons in his own home. nypd officers rafael ramos and winjin liu were shot sitting in their patrol car. the suspect then killed himself. heels of high had been profile deaths of two black men, michael brown in ferguson missouri eric garner on staten island here in new york. in both cases, grand juries

decided not to charge the officers setting off unrest around the world. rekindled in missouri after an 18-year-old man was killed by police tuesday night five miles from the ferguson flash point. dozens of protesters gathered some shutting down an interstate highway. releasing security video they say shows the man pointing a gun at the officer. back in new york the slain officer s officers' families in mourning. the family of officer wenjian liu made their first trip to the crime scene christmas eve, laying two wreathes one for liu, one for his partner, rafael ramos. >> my father was an incredible man. he was an incredible husband to my mother and he was a really dedicated officer. he truly cared about the people of new york city. >> reporter: the ramos family

was back here at the scene yesterday on christmas day. funeral services for him are set for saturday. vice president biden ares expected to attend. jetblue is offering to fly liu's members from china and cops from around the country who wish to pay their final respects. tamron? >> thank you. >> nice gesture there from jetblue. protests unfortunately got violent. >> yes. demonstrators protesting police killings of black men nationwide organized what was supposed to be a peaceful march. instead some of them shattered windows and set fire to dumpster dumpsters, vowing to not give police time off over christmas. george h.w. bush remains hospitalized. nbc's jacob rascon is in houston

and join us with the very latest on his condition. jake jacob? >> reporter: sheinelle, good morning, the former president is going on his fourth day at the hospital. he had a quote, terrific christmas day. tuesday he suffered what was being described as a shortness of breath and was taken by ambulance to the hospital. bush 4 is the oldest living president. although parkinson's disease make it is difficult for him to speak and walk he has remained active even skydiving on his 90th birthday. he was also at houston methodist two years ago, suffering from bronchitis and a persistent cough. that time he was here for two months this time around we're told his health scare is not that serious. sheinelle? >> we certainly wish him the best. jacob rascon thank you. the president and first lady visited a nearby marine base. thanking the men and women for their service and saying that

afghanistan has a chance to rebuild thanks to their service. by next week they plan to pull out most of the troops. starting in january, customers can order large fries again in japan. for almost three weeks, mcdonald's was running short on fries. labor disputes in the u.s. crippled the supply chain to japan, home to some 3,000 mcdonald's restaurants. it was a warm welcome from the miami heat for lebron james. king james kicked off the christmas night game by hugging his former teammates as most cheered for the man who helped to bring championships to miami. he hasn't talked to pat riley since his disputed return to cleveland. a big win for the cavs. business as usual after its

preholiday. we lost a lot of the rain. we have snow showers and rain across southern new mexico. this will turn into a bigger storm system into saturday especially. we have winter weather advisories in effect. blue areas are your winter storm warnings. that's where we'll see most of the snow in the highest elevations. a foot of snow in parts of the rockies. an additional six to nine inches. we're looking for this to turn into more of a free storm in parts of nebraska mississippi. you can see this warm air out ahead of this frontal system will trigger more showers and storms. as for snowfall, we're looking not as much accumulation in denver but in aspen, we could see more as well. up into the northwest and snoqualmie pass we could see up to a foot of snow and nine to 12 inches in parts of idaho, dakotas and western montana, too. your local forecast is coming u

good morning, i'm first alert meteorologist brittney shipp. today sunny and mild and less wind than what we saw on christmas day. temperatures range between 52 and 55 degrees, well above our average of 42 degrees. as we head to the rest of today, 54 degrees heading into tomorrow. sunny and mild and then we see clouds moving in overnight saturday and a chance of showers lingers into sunday with a cold front approaching. by next week very cold temperatures in the 30s for your daytime highs.

>> and that's your latest forecast. >> dylan, thank you very much. christmas presents can come in various shapes and sizes. for one couple this came in the best way. >> this is being called what else a christmas meerk snl a woman went into labor on a subway car and couldn't get to the hospital. >> officer, hey, somebody's having a baby. >> reporter: a special christmas delivery no one expected. southern pennsylvania transit police were alerted thursday night that a woman was going into labor on a subway train and two on-duty officers quickly jumped into action. >> i was praying for the medics to come and take over. it was happening so fast. the baby was already coming out and we did our training and what we should do. >> reporter: this surveillance video shows the officers with the couple during delivery. they were able to help with the birth and remove the umbilical

cord wrapped around the baby's neck. >> the mother wanted to hold the baby. the father offered the shirt off his back to warm the baby up. >> reporter: everyone was overjoyed to learn it was a healthy baby boy, especially his proud dad, posing with the two officers. >> there was excitement. everyone was excited, happy, congratulating the police officer. >> reporter: onlookers were captivated one witness capturing the video of the officers carefully carrying the newborn to the ambulance. >> it was wonderful. they cuddled the baby rushed it into the ambulance. very good. >> reporter: transit police celebrated the good news too, chief of septa saying i have waved today's fare for our newest rider. >> i was hoping for a quiet shift. don't we all? this experience was pleasant. it was. during the holiday, this is the right time. >> very memorable. both mom and baby are in the hospital doing well.

no word on what they are naming the baby tamron and carson. some are saying noel works. >> oh, pretty. betty, thank you. >> great story. unbelievable. >> adorable. today marks ten years since the deadliest tsunami on indonesian's coast that killed more than 220,000 people. katy tur has more. katy good morning. >> reporter: good morning. it was a decade ago today that the world woke up to an unimaginable disaster a tsunami that ripped through 14 countries and left towns flattened, including here where today, survivors are recounting those scary moments and remembering those lost. >> on 26th of december 2004 we woke up and took a stroll on this beach. >> oh, my god! >> 15 20 feet tall. >> reporter: an hour later, the beach was overcome and a wave like no one had ever seen was

crashing into petra's hotel room. >> i never heard the word tsunami before. >> never? >> never. >> reporter: suddenly she and the love of her life were sucked out to sea. eight hours later the super model was clinging to a tree. >> palm tree like this one was my savior. >> reporter: her boyfriend, simon atley, one of more than 5,000 on the west coast of thailand who didn't make it. a decade later, it is rebuilt and the tourists have come back. but the lost are long but forgotten. banda aceh 150 miles away from the epicenter of that 9.1 quake that caused the tsunami. there, the anniversary was marked with prayers for the dead. 130,000, one-third of this coastal community, killed in a matter of minutes.

really touched me so much. we went to the press and i see all the social media response and so many girls who started writing me e-mails from all over the world saying how this made them feel beautiful as well. and i just thought it was so special. i never thought a job as superficial as photography can actually change somebody's life. and it just made me feel very special. since then it just started taking more and more and more pictures of curvier women, women of all different shapes and sizes, ages races. >> how is your goal going on kick starter right now? >> it's going good. i'm hoping we'll be able to publish the book t means so much to me. it will be a project i would like to get going. >> denise you're here considered a, quote, unquote, plus-sized model. when you hear victoria say that all those years as a fashion photographer and she didn't know or hadn't seen a plus-sized

model, how does that make you feel? >> well, i think that it's very eye opening. we're at a point in the industry where everything is changing. i remember growing up that's part of what i love about my industry. i didn't realize there was plus sized modeling until i became one. i'm not six-feet tall. i'm not a sized two. i never thought there would be an industry for me to fit into. we're all learning pushing boundaries. as a mother it's so important to change the perception of beauty sbchlt i'm so proud to be in the position to do that. >> did you have role models or people who gave you the confidence to say, listen there's a type of model we're used to but my body is also an image that women should see in fashion magazines? >> absolutely. i feel like so many times i felt misrepresented in the media and my mom struggled with her weight growing up. being a mol there's so much i stand for and believe in. i was told in my acting days if you lose 10, 15 pounds you'll be perfect. i didn't want to change who i am

the remarkable story of louis zamperini. tom brokaw is here with a story tied to the greatest generation you haven't heard. >> tamron there's so many stories about the greatest general rag. what we're going to talk about today, the fact that 27,000 americans were prisoners of the japanese during world war ii including louis zamperini. compared to 1% in the german prisoner of war camps. of course the germans have the holocaust. so many other extraordinary accounts from that time. one remarkable man from nebraska also survived and 50 years went by before he spoke at lengths about his experiences. in the spring of 1942 clarence graham from eastern rural nebraska was taken prisoner by japanese forces on the philippine island that's him with a towel around his neck.

>> always that question in your mind will i make it or won't i? >> reporter: clarence would spend the next 3 1/2 years in japanese prisoner of war camps wearing scant clothing did he hard labor at a coal mine. how many hours were you in that coal mine every day? >> 12 in 12 off. >> reporter: what did you have to eat? >> rice. very little. not enough. we were not considered as human beings. and if we weren't able to work, we weren't fed, period. >> reporter: you witnessed some terribly brutal acts. there was a filipino woman who wanted to give you some water. >> yes. she got killed. >> reporter: right in front of you? >> yes, uh-huh. >> reporter: what about your commander? >> well they asked him to bow. he spit in their face so they cut his head off. >> reporter: were you witness to that? >> yep. >> reporter: how did you deal with that yourself? >> just ignore it. look for the good. look for the good. you don't want to think about things that are going to be
