now with an even colder night on the way. good morning. welcome to "nbc 10 news today." i'm chris cato. >> and i'm tracy davidson. let's find out about the chilly temperatures are meteorologist brittney shipp. >> good morning. we are going to see a freezing start to the morning, even as we head into the afternoon. temperatures are just going to warm right above that freezing mark. bundle up today. we're also dealing with wind speeds, so it's going to feel like we're in the 20s, even in the afternoon. our actual temperature in toms river, 16 degrees. 21 in atlantic city 18 in mt. holly, 23 in trenton. temperatures in the poconos at 16 28 in philadelphia 23 degrees in coatesville and we're at 24 in wilmington. so needless to say, it is a very cold start to the morning. as we head into the rest of today, plenty of sunshine but don't let that fool you. it is going to be a very cold day. temperatures range between 31 and 34 degrees. wind speeds out of the west 10 to 20 miles per hour. so, again, dealing with the windchill throughout most of today. i'll have your new year's eve midnight forecast coming up plus what to expect for new year's day and your seven-day
forecast. it's all coming up in just a bit. for now, let's check in with first alert traffic reporter jillian mele. >> good morning to you. let's start in new jersey where we have an accident on the turnpike southbound approaching route 322, exit 2. it's on the shoulder so it's not blocking anything there. area bridges are free of any delays clear of any accidents out there, so that's good news for drivers. this is a live look at 95 right at the interchange with cottman avenue. in the midst of this long-term construction zone, you can see just a few drivers out there, so no delays to report at all on 95. we are really off to a quiet start. same situation on 76. drive times pretty average right now. you can see about 12 to 14 minutes in both directions between the blue route and the vine. tracy? jillian, thanks. 6:01. we're following breaking news out of northampton county, where fire crews are battling an apartment building fire in bangor. skyforce10 is in the air on the way. we're told that this fire is on market street. it's a three-story apartment. it's been evacuated. no one's hurt. when we last checked with sky force, they're about ten minutes out from the scene.
so, we'll continue to follow this story, and as soon as they get there, we'll show you live pictures. we have new information now this morning on a deadly police shooting in delaware county yesterday. we now know that the shooting happened just days after the suspects made threats against law enforcement. nbc 10's monique braxton joins us live from havertown. monique, what led up to this confrontation yesterday that ended with the suspect being shot and killed by police? >> reporter: chris, we've been digging into this story overnight and we have learned the circumstances that led to the shooting death of joseph pacini actually began at this gym just over my shoulder. we've also learned an autopsy will be performed later this morning. let's take you from the beginning of what police are calling strange behavior. haverford's police chief tells nbc news the 52-year-old pacini openly threatened law enforcement here on sunday. the staff of the gym contacted haverford police. monday a detective asked pacini to come to headquarters. instead, he from clifton
heights, posted three hate-filled videos on youtube. then tuesday, police were tailing him after obtaining an arrest warrant. pacini was charged with making terroristic threats against police. we're warning you now, the video you're about to see may be disturbing. >> because i'm going to be dead or in prison within the next 12 hours, 24 tops. >> five officers fired. so there were numerous weapons fired. so that's why you see shots all around. >> reporter: now, this played out on the streets of drexel hill in broad daylight. in the next half hour we're working to bring you reaction from people who ran for cover. live from havertown, monique braxton, nbc 10 news. now, nbc10.com sent out breaking news alerts shortly after that shooting happened last night. you can stay on top of the story by downloading the new nbc 10 news app. just go to nbc10.com or search for it in the app store. it is 6:03 and we're following another
police-involved killing this morning. this one in cumberland county. bridgeton police shot and killed a man during a traffic stop. this happened around 9:30 last night on south avenue and henry street. police have not told us much yet, but we do know that they stopped a jaguar with two people inside. the passenger was shot and died a short time later at the hospital. police did find a weapon at the scene, but they have not said what led up to that shooting. 6:04 now. in indonesia, search crews are zeroing in on the wreckage of that airasia jet in the java sea. they sayasonar may have detected the plane on the floor of the ocean. the plane vanished sunday en route to singapore, 162 people on board. seven bodies have been recovered so far. investigators are working to identify the victims at a base in indonesia. family members have been asked to provide dna samples and photographs to help the process. meantime, heavy rain and rough seas off the coast of borneo are hampering the search for more victims. happening today, three suspects in the murder of a toddler in chester county head
to court to be arraigned. they are charged in the death of 3-year-old scott mcmillan. in november police found the boy's body at the suspects' home in parksburg. the boy was jillian tait's son. she and gary fellenbaum are accused of torturing and killing him. fellenbaum's estranged wife amber, will also face endangering the welfare of a child charges for allegedly watching the abuse take place for two weeks and not reporting it. a pregnant woman is recovering after being attacked and robbed just feet from her philadelphia home. take a look at the surveillance video and you can see the guy run up behind her. she's seven months pregnant. he punches her in the head, knocks her to the ground. it happened last monday night on manton street in the city's pennsport neighborhood. family members say the suspect broke several bones on the right side of the woman's face. >> i mean what kind of a coward picks on a woman, cold cocks a woman like that seven months? you can't miss she's pregnant. >> the suspect ran off with her
purse and a bag of food. surveillance video captured the suspect's car. they say he was driving this gray suv. this morning, an accused serial rapist is behind bars in philadelphia after investigators track him down in wisconsin. 38-year-old robert palen is accused of raping three women in pennypack park in 2010 and 2011. police say he offered a ride to the three victims, then drove them to the park where he beat and raped them. investigators talked about how a national fbi database helped lead them to palen. >> his dna was uploaded matched ours. we started this investigation all over again in march. >> palen was in a prison in wisconsin for attacking a woman there at the time. police say he is a father and was married at the time of the attacks in philadelphia. two women are facing charges after cherry hill police say they used a baby to hide stolen cosmetics. police say amanda platt and pornthip charoensook stole $500 worth of products from sephora
on saturday. according to investigators, the women hid the cosmetics underneath a 4-month-old who was inside a car seat mounted to a stroller. both are charged with shoplifting and using a juvenile to commit a criminal offense. 6:07 now and on to decision 2015. another candidate will be in the running for an at-large council seat in philadelphia, and a lot of you may be familiar with her father. nbc 10 has learned jenay ayers will be running for one of those seven seats. ayers is 26 years old. she's studying for her law degree at yale. if elected, she would be the youngest city council member in philadelphia's history. now, jenay is the daughter of former fire commissioner lloyd ayers. he retired last june. the deadline for filing for the city council race is march 10th. 6:07 and we're now less than 18 hours away from the new year with so many ways to celebrate. take a look at this. ♪ new year's eve means final rehearseals for the philadelphia mummers' parade. the fancy brigades got in some

at 6:14 we're following breaking news out of northampton county, where fire crews are battling what you can see is a very smokey apartment building fire. skyforce10 just got to the scene. this is in bangor along market street. the three-story apartment building has been evacuated. no one has been hurt. we'll continue to follow this story and bring you new information as soon as we get it. we also have more breaking news now from cumberland county. this is video from a house fire in bridgeton. and you can see the heavy smoke there, too, coming from a home on fairton millville road. fire officials tell us there are no injuries. you can see the home is destroyed. a salt truck had to be called out after water from fire crews iced over the street. police in one gloucester
county community are now equipped with body cameras. the paulsboro police department is the first in the county to use the new technology. the cameras will cost the department $71,000 for the first five years. the cameras will be worn by the department's 14 full-time officers at all times. police officials hope to increase the accountability of officers and the credibility of the department. >> we're hoping that to break down those barriers between perception and reality, that citizens the way an officer was or perceived to have been. we're not looking to use it as a discipline tool. we're not looking at it as a way to exonerate officers. >> the chief tells us the cameras are always recording in a 30-second loop and have the ability to record both audio and video. meantime new billboards in our area urge everyone to thank a cop today. take a look at these billboards. they popped up across berks county. they have messages like "who runs towards danger when you run away? thank a cop today." the owner of a reading-based
billboard company is taking credit for the displays. he tells nbc 10 he's doing it in response to the wave of police protests across the country. a big economic boost for philadelphia this morning. a software company is bringing dozens of new jobs to the city. the software and solutions provider for the life health and annuity industries is expanding and says it will create 81 jobs and expand its current location so 25,000 square feet. adminovate plans on investing thousands in the new site. orbitz are suing the founder of a website that helps people buy cheaper plane tickets. skiplags helps you buy a ticket with a layover in your actual destination and skip the last leg of the flight. this can end up being cheaper than a direct flight. the founder says there's nothing illegal about this but united airlines and orbitz say it promotes prohibited travel and they want $75,000 in lost
revenue. as you prepare to ring in the new year aaa reminds drivers about the dangers on the roads. the holiday ranks among the deadliest days on u.s. roadways. so, plan ahead to stay safe. data from the national highway traffic safety administration shows more than 360 driving deaths in pennsylvania involved alcohol. there are nearly 50,000 dui offenses in the state last year. that number is down nearly 5% from 2012. the director of public and government affairs for aaa mid-atlantic says even one death is far too many to be lost from a completely preventible crime. experts say the best way to stay safe is to plan ahead, make sure you have a designated driver. if you see someone who you think is impaired take their keys. consider using mass transit or call a taxi. and if you're hosting a party, be sure to offer alcohol-free beverages for your guests. new jersey is considering a plan to turn highway rest stops into shopping centers, sort of. a bill in trenton would require operators of the new jersey turnpike, the garden state parkway and the ac expressway to

regular schedule, everything is on time. late into the night you can expect additional trains but for septa, that schedule is going to be regular today. now your nbc 10 first alert weather with meteorologist brittney shipp. >> good morning. freezing conditions expected for us really most of today. eventually towards the afternoon we'll warm slightly above freezing, but it's very cold. it's going to stay cold even heading into tomorrow. and we're tracking the possibility of a weekend storm that could bring us a wintry mix, but mainly rainfall throughout your saturday lingering into sunday. a live look at the aramark building where the flags are moving. we're seeing wind speeds out of the west-northwest at 9 miles per hour. that's helping to contribute to our windchill. so, our actual temperature at 28, feels-like temperature at 19. so it is very cold when you step outside. 24 degrees in reading, 21 in atlantic city under mostly clear skies. we will see plenty of sunshine today. 19 in pottstown, 18 in coatesville. temperatures in wilmington at 24 degrees. 25 in northeast philly 23 in trenton. and right here along the shore
we're at 31 degrees in avalon and 26 in dover. our feels-like temperature for the rest of the region 18 in mt. holly, 15 in atlantic city. feeling like 17 degrees in wilmington. and right now, our radar shot shows clear conditions for us. satellite/radar shot shows that we're going to see quiet conditions heading into the rest of today, especially for the eastern half of the nation. it's going to be a cold start to 2015. our average is 41. 33 today. take a look at tomorrow 39. so, we're going to see our temperatures regulating a bit, but it's still going to be very cold for new year's eve. temperatures at midnight at 26 degrees, a windchill at 20 degrees. your seven-day forecast shows warming conditions as we head into the weekend, 43 degrees by friday, but after our high of 52 on sunday an arctic blast drops us back down to the 30s on monday. there is one sussex county town hoping this cold snap will turn into cold hard cash. we'll explain. and taking a look at some of the things going on for new

this morning we are following two deadly police shootings in two different counties. the first one happened in delaware county, where police say they opened fire on a man after he tried to run them over. we have new information on threats that he made against police officers just days before. and that other shooting in cumberland county where a traffic stop led to a deadly police shooting there. we're talking to police this morning to learn why they shot a man. and we're just less than 18 hours away from the new year. here's a live look from times square, where some last-minute preps are happening for that famous ball drop. and if you're out and about on this new year's eve, you'd better bundle up. go ahead and bundle up this morning, too. it is chilly out there, as we look at the wind blowing the flags atop the aramark building

good morning. >> good morning to you, brittney. a delay is forming on the 42 freeway, the northbound side right by creek road and 295, all because of an accident at that location. we do have lanes restricted in that area. traffic can get by but just slowly, so keep that in mind. elsewhere in new jersey still have an accident on the turnpike southbound approaching route 322, exit 2. that accident is on the shoulder so no big delays to report approaching that scene. upper merion we have a crash valley forge park road route 23 right near inner line drive. as far as the majors go they're not too bad out there. we have a little volume on some of the roads, but really no big delays and no accidents on 76. the blue route is clear and so is 95. chris? 6:32. skyforce10 on patrol for breaking news this morning. we are in northampton county over the scene of an apartment building fire there. this is on market street in bangor. northampton county again. a three-story apartment building. the fire broke out a couple of hours ago. the building has been evacuated, and we just learned that some neighboring buildings have also
been evacuated as a precaution. at this point, though, no injuries, but the fire is not yet under control. we can see the crews there putting water on it and smoke still coming from the building but they've told us as of just a few minutes ago that they still don't have the fire under control. you can see some hotspots burning there towards the back of the complex. we'll keep an eye on that and bring you new information as soon as we get it. earlier this morning, firefighters in cumberland county faced some heavy smoke and cold weather fighting this house fire in bridgeton. this video is from about an hour ago at a home on fairton millville road or what was left of a home there. the house destroyed by fire. no one was injured. now, we also learned that the street is being salted because water from the hoses there froze over on the streets. we have new information on a deadly police shooting in delaware county. we now know that the shooting came just days after the suspect made public threats against law enforcement. nbc 10's monique braxton is live in havertown. take us through how all this
happened. >> reporter: tracy overnight, while our viewers were sleeping we've been digging for details about this story, and we have learned new information that the circumstances leading up to the shooting death of joseph pacini actually began on sunday at this gym. haverford's police chief tells nbc 10 as well as nbc news the 52-year-old pacini openly threatened law enforcement. on sunday the staff of the gym contacted haverford police about what they call pacini's strange behavior. then monday a detective contacted pacini asking him to come to police headquarters. instead, he posted three hate-filled videos from his home on youtube. clifton police tell us that on tuesday, police obtained an arrest warrant, charging pacini with making terroristic threats against police. they also tailed him. when pacini was approached police say he used his car as a weapon. he struck one police chief's car.

in the app store. 6:35. now to a developing story in south jersey. another police-involved shooting this time in cumberland county where bridgeton police shot and killed a man after a traffic stop last night. nbc 10's christine maddela is live in bridgeton this morning. christine, do we know yet why police opened fire on this driver? >> reporter: no, we're still trying to piece together exactly what happened. all we know is a bridgeton police officer shot and killed a man during a traffic stop. now, take a look at video from the scene. this is at the intersection of south avenue and henry street in bridgeton. there are two investigations going on by two different agencies. new jersey state police troopers are the ones who processed the crime scene. you can see them placing evidence markers around the area. they found several shell casings. and this is the jaguar a bridgeton police officer pulled over during the traffic stop around 9:30 last night. if you look closely, you can see a bullet hole in the windshield.
all we know is the police officer shot and killed a passenger in that car. the cumberland county prosecutor's office is investigating what led to the shooting. i talked to bridgeton police this morning and they referred me to the prosecutor's office and when i called the prosecutor's office, i wasn't able to reach anyone at this hour. i'm going to try again when their office is open for the morning. reporting live in bridgeton, christine maddela, nbc 10 news. 6:37 right now. a camden county man is accused of secretly recording his friend by placing a hidden camera in her bathroom. gloucester township police say carl camp jr. of magnolia put a cell phone in that woman's bathroom on several different occasions this month. and after finding the phone, she reported it to police. then a second woman came forward to say that camp did the same thing to her. he's now charges with invasion of privacy. this morning, grief counselors will be available for students and teachers at the ritter school in gloucester county. matthew mccloskey a fifth grader at that school was crossing route 47 with his

in wilmington and 26 degrees in dover. our feels-like temperature in the single digits for the poconos, 15 in wilmington 18 in millville, and we'll stick with a cold wind out of the northwest. calm conditions in pottstown. wind speeds at 9 miles per hour in philadelphia. so freezing conditions expected for us but the combination of the light wind speeds and very cold air, we're going to continue with windchills in the 20s throughout today. right now shows quiet conditions, especially for the eastern half of the nation. high pressure's in control, so we'll see plenty of sunshine but it's going to be very cold out. our average for this time of year 41 degrees. heading into tomorrow -- or today, i should say, 33 degrees. tomorrow 39 degrees. and close to average. if you plan on hanging out outside at midnight through new year's eve temperature's at 26 degrees. your windchill's going to be at 20 degrees. so, make sure you bundle up. and your seven-day forecast shows 39 tomorrow on new year's day, breezy and cold. we are going to see more clouds heading into friday then a chance of a wintry mix saturday
and then switching over to rainfall. rain will linger into your sunday morning. 52 degrees. but a big drop in store for us heading into monday back down to the 30s. >> i sense a lot of people watching the fireworks from the comfort of their warm car this evening, possibly. >> yeah that would be good. let's check on the cars on the roads this morning with nbc 10's first alert traffic reporter jillian mele. jillian? >> good morning. we still have an accident on the 42 freeway, northbound side right near interstate 295. the right lane is blocked, so we are seeing a delay in that area. traffic can get by but very slowly. so leave yourself extra time if you're heading out on 42. 76 right near the conshohocken curve. drive times pretty average so far this morning, about 12 to 13 minutes in both directions between the blue route and the vine. the blue route is clear. the vine street expressway is also clear so far this morning. and if you are heading out on mass transit, new jersey transit operating on a modified weekday schedule. patco is operating on a special schedule for the day. to start the day, regional rails, septa operating on a regular schedule. then as we get closer to the

going up nearly 10 cents a gallon. it's the latest in a series of tax hikes to boost road construction funding in pennsylvania. the next increase will come in 2017. by the way, new jersey lawmakers continue to vote down additional gas taxes, which is why the gas tax there is the lowest in the area. delaware health officials say they have seen ten times the number of flu cases so far this year compared to the same time last year. as of december 20th delaware has seen 632 cases of the flu. two people have died. an infectious disease expert tells us what we've been hearing for a while now, that this year's vaccine didn't hit every flu strain it needed to. >> we're still recommending people get the vaccine, because we do as i mentioned, think it will provide a little bit of immunity, a little bit of benefit. >> this pharmacy in wilmington has seen a huge demand for tamiflu this season. a number of pharmacies have had trouble keeping it in stock. pennsylvania health officials report more than 10,000 flu cases throughout the state.
almost a third are in our area. that's from late september to last saturday. and in new jersey the health department there says flu cases in the state are high. in the last report cases were rated at a moderate level. and we have new information this morning on the latest enrollment period for health care under the affordable care act. according to a new report more than 4 million people signed up for the first time or re-enrolled in health plans. here's a look at the numbers in our area. in pennsylvania, a little more than 180,000. more than 105,000 in new jersey. and nearly 9,000 in delaware. health insurance plans go into effect tomorrow. 6:48. police have identified the woman who was shot and killed by her 2-year-old son inside a walmart in idaho. police say the 29-year-old mom was shopping with her four kids yesterday. her 2-year-old was in a shopping cart when he reached into her purse and grabbed her gun. it went off, killing the woman. police say she had a concealed weapons permit. in edmonton canada police are investigating what's being
called that city's worst mass murder. investigators say a man killed eight people before taking his own life. two of the victims are children. authorities are calling this a planned and deliberate case of domestic violence. the suspect, who has not been identified had a long criminal history. engineers will be examining the morton salt storage facility in chicago after this a wall collapsed, burying cars in salt. the wall broke yesterday afternoon, spilling road salt on to cars at a car dealership next door. that's not good. no one was injured. a preliminary inspection found that the wall may have collapsed because the salt was piled too high. there are a lot of towns in this area that would have loved to have had all that road salt last winter. >> last year, yeah. all right, time to go to new york now for a look at what's coming up on the "today" show. >> and we get a preview from willie geist and savannah guthrie. good to see you both! >> good morning. >> tracy and chris, good morning to you. happy new year. coming up this morning, new questions raised about the final moments of airasia flight 8501.

>> all right, thanks. nine minutes before 7:00. if you're heading out to work on the last day of work for 2014 let's check on the roads. >> nbc 10's first alert traffic reporter jillian mele has a look at what's happening. >> good morning. not too many people on the roads yet. we are seeing some issues though. 95 to start off, slowing down a little built southbound heading into center city philadelphia. pockets of volume. drive times not bad, 14 minutes from woodhaven down to the vine. the vine is clear, but in upper merion, we have an accident valley forge park road route 23 right near inner line drive. we have two problems out of new jersey. the biggest one is this accident on the 42 freeway northbound right near interstate 295. the right lane is blocked. you have a delay basically from 55 right to 42 at creek road. and then even on 55 it's starting to slow down a little bit as drivers try to get on to 42. so leave yourself extra time there. this accident not causing any delays. turnpike southbound right as you approach route 322, exit 2. tracy? it is 6:52. it was a chaotic scene in
delaware county. police say they feared for their lives after a suspect tried to run them over. >> that's when officers opened fire and shot and killed the man. nbc 10's monique braxton is live in havertown for us with new information about why police were following this guy. monique? >> reporter: good morning. coming up after the break, we're going to tell you the connection between this gym in havertown and the deadly police shooting over in drexel hill.
haverford's police chief tells nbc news the 52-year-old pacini openly threatened law enforcement. sunday concerned staff of the gym contacted haverford police about pacini's so-called strange behavior. monday, a detective contacted pacini asking him to speak to them at police headquarters. instead, he posted three hate-filled videos on youtube from his home in clifton heights. then tuesday, police obtained an arrest warrant, charging pacini with making terroristic threats against police. when pacini was approached in drexel hill police say he used his car as a weapon. they fired five shots. no officers were injured, but pacini was killed. witnesses tell us they thought they were hearing fireworks. in just a couple of hours, an autopsy is going to be performed on pacini. we'll have you covered with the latest developments as the day progresses. live for now from havertown, monique braxton, nbc 10 news.
i'm christine maddela covering another police-involved shooting in bridgeton, new jersey. what we know is a bridgeton police officer shot and killed a man during a traffic stop and prosecutors are still trying to figure out exactly what led to that shooting. just minutes ago, we met the victim's cousin who's also trying to figure out what happened. around 9:30 prosecutors tell nbc 10 police stopped a jaguar at the intersection of south avenue and henry street. what happened next investigators from the prosecutor's office are still trying to figure out. the passenger of the car was shot and killed by a police officer. that man's cousin tells us he had a troubled past but had turned his life around. now she's trying to figure out anything she can. >> i just want to know where he is is. i just need to see my cousin and let him know that family is here. >> reporter: and you want to know what happened? >> that's most -- that's first
