is. we will check in with her in a while. let's start with our top story, that new message from isis militants overnight as two countries try to free two hostages the terror group is threatening to kill. katie, good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, matt. the japanese say they believe the voice on this latest recording is that of kenji goto asking for husband life and the life of a pilot in exchange for a would be suicide bomber. the deadline is just about three hours away. >> i am kenji goto. this is the first message i have been told to send to you. >> reporter: isis claims this is the voice of kenji goto explaining the recent demands. for the release of would be suicide bomber on death row in
jordan and if the sun sed set deadline is not me. they say they will kill him immediately. in japan, vigils while japanese prime minister shinzo abe responded angrily, saying these lowly acts of terror are something we can fought forgive. speccing to reporters, goto's mother says the prime minister is doing everything he can to bring her son home. as for jordan they have agreed to release an iraqi woman in prison for trying to blow herself up at an amman toelt hotel. they claim they have beheaded the other hostage on saturday after initially demanding a $200 million ransom. the japanese government says they have been in close contact with the jordanian government but won't specify what moves
they may make. right now, japanese journalists are lined up at the turkey border matt even if the prisoner release goes as planned, it is unclear whether goto or the jordanian pilot will be released as well only that they won't be executed. >> thank you very much. closer to home the big story remains the weather, the impact of tuesday's weather across the northeast. we will talk to dylan in a moment. two new systems, really that could bring more snow. >> it's a one-two punch. nobody wants to hear. i hate to be the one to tell you about it. already, look at this we got winter storm warnings up already from maine, freezing rain
adviseradded a -- advisories. it makes its way into the east. so by early tomorrow morning, we got snow here in the northeast. we are looking at maybe one-to-two possibly three inches of snow. it means heavy snow for maine right now. we are talking nine-to-12 inches for maine. if that second low strengthens, we could see some of the heavier snow slip down towards new york city. we are watching that. now, here's the other storm we are watching. sunday morning, this storm developed in texas. it's going to be the one that brings rain into the southwest. the track of the storm still uncertain. you look at the main models the european model. the strak further to the south. it's more of a mid-atlantic-southeastern atlantic coast. the american model, which did better in this last storm, had the trap further to the north. >> that means the heavier snow in the mid-atlantic into the
east. an isles an icy mix. we have to watch. we have a few days out. we will be watching these models closely. first, i forgot. i have to go talk to dylan dwyer. i like being with you guys. i have to see dylan dwyer. she was on the first ferry in nantucket after they got cut off from this big storm. >> reporter: al the last thing everyone wants to hear about right now is more bad weather, considering we are just finishing up digging out from the first storm. so here in nantucket, the quintessential new england town completely cut off and in the dark during the storm is finally getting back up and running. power is restored schools are up and running. the ferries are running. this whole community is ready to move on. a summertime get away nantucket is encased in snow and ice.
>> it started out a plain old winter storm. then it has become an ice storm, then a hurricane, then a flood. >> reporter: much of the space has been reserved for power crews. things are ripping off your house, what is that sounding like as the storm is happening? >> it sounds like a train is coming through your living room. >> reporter: they say people in nantucket stick together during a storm. >> it's such a big community that people tend to almost embrace them. >> you definitely feel like a community thing that you can just go to a neighbor's house rom just look at this, a few photo of what some faced on tuesday, walls of waves crashing ashore. that's the sound of the ocean being chipped away in marshfield nearly everything was doused the water freezing in place. >> the upstairs i think is okay
but the downstairs clear through. >> reporter: high tide smashed through this home sending debris into his face. >> if i got knocked out, i probably would be kill. >> reporter: le survived but his home is an icy ruin. the storm brought into focus by a satellite photo, showing a blanket of snow in the northeast. in portland maine, people on sidewalks are shielded by snow banks. it's taking a toll on snow blowers. business is booming at this machine shop. >> belts are going, people are pushing the machines a little too hard. >> reporter: there is plenty to do with snow ntt forecast perhaps more to come. there is one shoveler who is getting a lot of attention. this boston man was anonymously shoveling and clearing away the snow from the finish line at the boston marathon.
obviously, an important symbol in the wake of the boston bombing. we found him. we will talk to him in a bit. >> i saw that picture online i started to choke up. there is something so wonderful and kind about that gesture. dylan, thank you very much. the fbi is intensifying its search for the person or persons behind a series of threatening tweets aimed at threats in the u.s. mr. bomb threat made in the name of isis that mentioned specific flights him nbc's tom costello is at reagan national airport. good morning. >> reporter: hi matt good morning. what makes it so concerning it's happened so many times in the past two weeks, more than 20 sometimes times since saturday. often they are coming while the plane is still in the air. the radio traffic between the tower and pilots anything but usual. >> this is fbi just doing a check. how's conditions on board? flight deck secured? >> the flight deck is secure.
passengers are pretty well behaved, starting to get a little bittancy. >> reporter: it's happened nearly two times, bomb threats posted on twitter by someone claiming to represent isis. on january 17th delta flight atlanta to raleigh. >> there were dogs sniffing us on and off the plane. yeah it was a little kraesz. >> reporter: on sunday jetblue 1006 long beach to seattle, and phoenix to seattle and delta 1061 los angeles to orlando divert after someone tweeted. >> so to see that and say we are isis we are here we're on the plane, i mean that was absolutely terrifying. because you don't know what you are looking for. you don't know if someone looks suspicious or fought. >> reporter: once on the ground the plane and passengers isolated and searched. >> everyone's going to have to be cleared t. entire aircraft is going to have to be cleared due
to the possible credibility of a threat. >> reporter: law enforcement say it's the work of pranksters and copycat, fought terrorists t. penalty if caught up to five years in prison and a $250,000 fine. the fbi is an leadsing the twitter feeds looking for the foot prints that could lead them to a suspect. >> every time it's creating a little profile. that gives authorities more information so they can make better decisions. >> reporter: for passengers of course it's a huge inconvenience, missed connections, missed appointments but for the airlines we are talking tens of thousands of dollars per flight. this is very expensive. so as you might expect the fbi is being very aggressive on this thank you. meantime there is new concern on that measles traced to disney parks. the number of confirmed cases is now approaching 100. hundreds more are warned to watch for signs of the virus.
halle jackson has the story in mesa arizona, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, savannah arizona health officials say a thousand people may have been exposed in this state from the seven patients that had the virus here including one woman that visited this clinic. because the virus is so contagious it can survive a couple hours in the air or on surfaces. that one case may have put exponentially more people at risk. this morning some 200 people who may have been exposed to measles are monitoring children and themselves after people are visiting health care centerings in california and in arizona where they live. >> i have been informed it was an adult woman unvaccinated who exposed my child at a facility that's for high risk children. it's sad because this was preventible. >> reporter: it's fought just
unvaccinated adults who could be spreading the highly contagious virus. a man it would health officials he thinks he was immunized when he was younger, but he became infected with the virus anyway. a single measles shot can be 95% effective. two can boost it to 99%. they are concerned for adults and children because it's galloping from state to state. if are you not vaccinated or not sure if you had the infection, play it safe and get the vax nation. >> reporter: even if you were immunized as a child you may want to consider a booster. >> as we get older, our immune systems aren't as strong that makes everybody a little more vulnerable. >> reporter: it's why adam winetraub visited his doctor for a shot. >> i am 39-years-old the last time i had it was at 13 when the doctor recommended it i said yeah this is a good idea. i should do it.
>> reporter: he lives in southern california where half of measles cases, 61%, affect adults and every reported measles cases in nearby orange county is over the age of 18. experts are bracing for more measles case one california high school for example, sent home more than 66 students who haven't been immunized for up to a week. one dad wants his son's school to ban any kids who don't have the vaccine. matt savannah. >> astonishing how quickly it can spread. thank you. >> natalie is here with news on the airasia disaster. >> we have new information this morning on the crash of airasia flight 8501 officials say it was under the control of the first officer and not the captain when it climbed 300 feet in 30 seconds. it is believed though the captain took over control of the aircraft as it began to descend
sharply. it went down in the java sea killing all 162 people on board. meantime the disappearance of malaysia flight ah-370 has been officially declared an accident. in a statement this morning released officials say all 239 people on board are presumed dead. the search for the wreck annual in the southern indian ocean will go on. secretary of defense chuck hagel said farewell to the troops as he begins to leave his post. hagel resigned in november. the president has named ashton cart tore replace hagel, but he'll remain at his post until a successor is confirmed. future presidents of the united states will take off in a brand-new air force one. the pentagon announced on wednesday the current fleet of two presidential aircraft will be replaced by boeing 7478s. they will need five years of
testing after that. chaos erupted at st. louis city hall wednesday night at the first public hearing at a police oversight board. about an hour into that meeting. an officer was testifying when you see this shouting and shoving match break out there behind him. the commotion lasted about 15 minutes until order was finally restored. the hearing was then adjourned early. and an arizona weatherman kept us cool when things got very very hot. take a look. >> i'm not authorized to evacuate. >> this temperature seems pretty high. >> cape creek, fountain hills, they don't look good either. frankly, wickenburg is a total loss. >> fox 10 al you can attest to this. those weather computers have a minds of their own sometimes, maybe the wet model from mars perhaps? >> or hades.

blizzard of 2015 mystery. well the mystery has been solved t. man is chris le donny, i had the pleasure of speaking to him earlier him i asked him what inspired him to get out there and shovel the line take a look. >> hey, it was a spur of the moment decision. i had been spending most of the morning shoveling anyway. the city was pretty buried. the finish line is my favorite spot in the city. i wanted to dig it out because it was covered in snow. obviously it holds a place in everybody in boston's heart. to me it was more about the spirit of the boston mar on the and the incredible amount of encouragement and positivity that surrounds the event and how much people including myself love to race. >> now, we love him. he is awesome. chris said he was stunned by the response on social media, supply. guys because get this he doesn't have a twitter account.

city, mount holly is down to ten. reading and pottstown in the single digitses this morning. it is a cold start and a sunny one. but clouds will be increasing as the day goes on. and we will see some clouds take over this afternoon leading to a few flurries this afternoon. and a chance of some light snow. nothing showing up on the radar just yet, but eyes to the west you can see the light precipitation that's heading our way. light snow moving through michigan. we could see a dusting to an inch from philadelphia north and west. by late this evening, vai, the snow is completely out of here and the cold gusty wind blowing tomorrow. now to a story where nbc 10 was first on the scene this morning. investigators are looking for the cause of a deadly fire in south philadelphia that killed a man and a woman. flames broke out on the first floor of the row home on daly street around 1:30 in the morning. a police officer tried to save the victims but suffered minor injuries. more coming up in the next half hour in another update. see you then.

away from parties this weekend. erica hill is in charlottesville. good morning to you. >> reporter: savannah good morning to you. there is strong reaction on campus and online. but interestingly, many of the sorority women we spoke with last fight would fought talk to us on camera. in fact they didn't even want us to share the names of tear sororitys for fear of backlash. they called this mandate as you said sexist shocking annoying frustrating, but say they do plan to comply. it's not just sorority women who areup set, though. we are learning the calls for change here grow louder. misguided, offensive, a step backwards, a few of the reactions to a new directive aimed at the university of virginia's 16 sororitys, one that came from their national office members told to steer clear of all involvement with campus fraternities this saturday. >> nobody can come. >> reporter: greek life was
reinstated at uva two weeks ago after being shut down in november. reaction to a now discredited "rolling stone" article about an alleged rape at a uva frat house. despite credibility issues with the article the school and students acknowledge the need for a broader discussion about safety and sexual violence. few rules for greek event were created and agreed to as a condition of reinstating sororitys and fraternities and the edict last week from national sorority offices. >> i think it's a huge step backwards if terms of basic women's rights so i was kind of offended. >> a petition was quickly created online. as of wednesday, it had more than 2,100 signatures. instead of addressing rape and sexual assault at uva, it read the mandate perpetuates the idea that women are inferior sexual objects. uva law student claire collins didn't hesitate to add her name. >> i think they set out with the idea of security and safety
foremost in mind. but the way it comes down seems like an extension of victim blaming mentality. >> reporter: in a statement to nbc news the university of virginia said the mandate is quote a matter between the national organizations and their local chapters. while the national conference which represents sororitys but did not issue the mandate, says it supports alternative "options action" on saturday as a matter of safety. an approach that didn't sit well with jalen ross especially in light of the new safety standards his fraternity helped create. >> we are throwing it out and assuming it's as dangerous as he has ever been. >> reporter: now the student count sim has reached out to the national leaders of all 16 sororitys and asked him to come here to campus to have a discussion on friday and hopefully some sort of a resolution the chairman told me he's heard from one of those organizations, but is confident they will hear from more before tomorrow. i do want to update you as well savannah. we just heard further reaction
this morning from the university of virginia. they are now saying they resist any implication uva students are deserving of specialed a uponition saying the students have lived up to our student self govern fans and mentioning standards by all the greek organizations here going on to say, quote, we have confidence to use good judgment be mindful of one another's safety and adhere to the safety practices developed by then. savannah. >> a story that won't go away for uv, a eic are ka thank you very much. let us get a check of the weather from mr. roker. >> that's right. for a lot of folks, they are looking at phoenix with normally gorgeous weather. sunny, dry. fought so this weekend. we've got a developing system that will bring this subtropical moisture into the southwest and as it does we want for this load to develop. it's going to be a slow mover, bringing in that moisture. we are looking for rain and heavy mountain snows beginning friday on into friday morning.

that will make you think object what it means to be alive. martin miss torious said he spent nine years pence his body aware of everything around him but powerless to communicate to everyone. nbc's kate snow spoke to martin for his first television interview. >> martin pistorius' book is on the new york best time's list. he lives in england new, a kind hearted person with an amazingly positive outlook on life. when you know what he's been through, that's even more incredible. >> it's still get me. sorry. >> reporter: it's hard for sfoen joan pistorius to think about what happened to martin. when he was 12. he was sent home thinking he had the flu. he never went back.
his body weakened. he spent the last 12 years in and out of hospitals. >> the last thing he said to me when home. >> reporter: as in when am i going home? when doctors finally said he could. >> we were told to take him home and take care of him until he died. >> reporter: martin didn't die, according to records obtained by nbc news he was a medical mystery. he could barely control his movements. he no longer ate on his own and couldn't communicate. doctors told them he had the intelligence of a three-month-old. >> i would in the morning get him dressed, feed him. take him to the day care center. >> reporter: day after day for years, and then about four years in when martin was 16 he says something incredible happened. he woke up. but no one noticed. >> i gradually started to become aware of what was going on around me like something being completely out of focus, even grey and gradually coming into focus and the colors flooding

anybody. he heard everything even something his mother once said in a moment of desperation. >> i said to him one day, i hope you die and i had no idea that he understood that. and i'm very very sorry i said it. >> while i was very sad and upset by what she said i understood where that was coming from. my mother often felt that she wasn't a good mom and couldn't take care of me. one of the hardest things for me was i couldn't tell her that no you are doing great. she is a good mother. >> reporter: he was after a new therapist saw signs of recognition in martin's eyes his parents took him for testing. >> what we saw in the test is he can understand. >> oh it was wonderful. >> martin says he remembers nothing from his life up to age 12. he had to relearn to read and write and get around. he eventually went to college and as his mind grew stronger so did his body.
he even drives now. but he did worry that he might never find love. >> i thought i have so much love pence of me and nobody to give it to. >> reporter: but then on new year's day, 2008 he met a friend of his sister's jonah. >> it's such a nice smile. i love he's really attractive. >> reporter: martin it almost sounds like a love at first sight kind of story. >> yes, it is hard to explain. you just know. i had heard people say, you always thought, yeah right, until it happened to me. >> reporter: they got married five years ago and now they want to have a baby. there it is, there is the grin. >> reporter: in his book martin wonders if people get so used to st. croix they stop noticing it. >> i probably have a somewhat unique perspective on that. i appreciate things a lot t. simple things like simply being able to have a conversation

happening today, president obama will be in philadelphia tonight. he's scheduled to speak at the house democratic caucus retreat in society hill. vice president joe biden is expected to speak to the group tomorrow. also today, long-time philadelphia councilman jim kenny will resign. he will deliver a farewell address to city council this afternoon. he's been in his current at-large seat for 23 years. many believe he's setting up for a run for mayor. today delaware's governor will introduce his proposed budget for the year 2016 to the state of delaware. cabinet members and members of the general assembly will join the governor for the presentation in dover. he's expected to address many of the economic growth proposals he outlined in last week's state of the state speech. we'll have another local update for you in about 25 minutes. i'm chris cato. now we go back to the "today" show. have a great day.

it's certainly an authentic look at where we are in this country with race today. what we wanted to happen did happen. >> the characters confront the issue of race head-on. before i ask you about the story line have you had an experience in your own life a personal experience where you witnessed racism unfolding in front of you, either overtly or suddenly that had an impact? >> i was born in compton, california 1955 i was there for seven, eight years. that word used to be lot. never to somebody's face i never saw it ever used in anger, it was used in words like joke and i'm around that and i hear that extended family. you can use that myself. it's not appropriate and so yeah i've seen it. i never, i've seen other ones for sure. >> in the movie, your character does use the "n" word at one
point. i know there were people in the project that were nervous. they urged you to shoot an alternate version of the screen. you stood your ground. >> there was talk about it. i funded it. there was no way, there is no point in dancing around this subject and the success of the movie is that the words do get said and in a normal break down of an argument you can walk away. people watch a two-hour movie they see this word if they hang another five minutes, something else happens, this movie really ends up being about a lot of things that people i think wish they'd be able to say. >> in the process of being able to go out and promoting this movie, you do a lot of interviews in the last week or so you have been asked about certain subjects and you made your comments about "american sniper" and michael moore. you weighed in on deflate-get a, without going into specific comments people can go online and find that. do you find the older you get
the more opinionated you are or you are willing to share those opinions? >> i think we will hear we will talk about black and white and someone will bring up michael moore or deflate-gate. i would talk about that when it comes to a movie that has a lot of value. as far as the football thing, it has no value to me i can have an opinion about it. michael moore i was point blank asked about it. i didn't say i didn't want to talk about it. i felt from my point of view those comments were wrong. >> what else are you doing for fun? >> well we were right on the ocean. so our background our back yard is the type rolls, they're out in it every day pulling something out of the hose trying to look at it. so my little girl is 4. she decided she's if ballet. i asked her, how she's doing? she said i'm the best. i said okay we're going to work on humble right after that. but, you know i have this movie life and then i have this ought

bowl i think for many people the ads. this year with you saw 50% of companies releasing or more than 50% releasing their ads online early. does this dilute the impact of the ads during the super bowl? are you thinking advertisers may think lightning may strike twice? >> well it's a bit of a strategy. what was a blowup kwhafls a premier yesterday, premiered it here about 5 million views already. that's a miniscule piece of the audience you bring everyone in everyone be quiet. people see this it's the buzz it can be a big win for marketers who get it right. >> a lot of teasers, skittles and nissan did this rather than releasing the full commercial. do you like this? >> it's interesting, it's halfway. someone put a piece of the commercial out. some saw something. >> i like this marshawn lynch. >> this has nothing to do with the commercial he's known as a big skittles advocate.

video link to the pike county jail. he was arrested after a seven-week manhunt in the poconos. prosecutors are seeking the death penalty. long-time councilman jim kenny will resign today. he will deliver his farewell address to city council this morning. he served on council for 23 years now and many believe he's setting up a run for mayor. philadelphia has a resign to run law, meaning any elected official must first give up their seat if they want to run for another office. we'll have another update for you in about 25 minutes. i'm chris cato, have a great morning.

this isn't a ongoing investigation. this was reported to us at 6:00 p.m. on january 26th. the couple did not have a wifi protected pass. >> here with more information to protect her family from being exposed. a senior tech analyst at mashable. good to see you. >> good to see you. >> you don't think this is a clear cut case of hacking? >> it's not really hacking. this is a camera that connects to the internet. you are supposed to put a password on it. you can access it from an iphone or web browser from another location. this couple didn't have a password on the camera. so all the intruder, which granted is very creepy, had to do was physical out what the address of the camera was and enter in the defall details. >> they had the wifi password. the camera did not have a good pass word.
>> they need passwords for each of the devices too,. >> just to be lear, they told us they put up notifications on their websites, with older camera model itself before 2013, they might need updates as well. putting those personal passwords on those devices on their cameras. so that's really the take away here, right? is there that's the big take away. you want to make sure you are protecting your camera, if it's connected to the internet. you want to use a secure password you can use last pass and password generator.net. use upper and lower case letters, make sure you have a password on that. >> we were talking before we went on the air, so many parents will go out to dinner and show you six different angles you can look at their baby. that's fun to have. but, also, are pirnt putting themselves at risk with these cameras you think? >> i wouldn't say they are putting themselves at risk.

forecast from meteorologist bill henley. >> we're track light snow. the wet weather is to the west. the clouds, it now turned cloudy in this view from center city. the wet weather moving into western pennsylvania. it is going to be a lot lighter as it moves into philadelphia. could see a dusting. the suburbs north and west into the pocono mountains, possibly an inch of snow some of the higher elevations could see more. most of the day, it is just going to be cloudy. though the cold will ease it will never feel warm today. high temperatures in the 30s. a crash led to a murder investigation in philadelphia's olney section this morning, just before 1:00 a.m. an suv slammed into the side of a house on north american street. police say the front seat passenger died from a gunshot to the back of the head. the driver was shot and wounded. police believe the shooter was in the back seat. witnesses tell investigators at least three people got out of the vehicle and ran away. investigators are trying to find out what caused a fire in south philadelphia.
that fire killed a man and a woman. flames broke out on the first floor of that home around 1:30 this morning. a police officer who tried to save the victims suffered from minor injuries. fire officials tell us the home did not have any working smoke detectors. president obama will be in philadelphia today for a meeting with democratic lawmakers. the president is scheduled to speak at the house democratic caucus retreat in society hill this evening. he was in philadelphia in november, as you can see here stumping for tom wolf when he was running for governor. a full hour of news in 30 minutes. i'm christine maddela. i'll see you then.
