>> he is not the only one braving the elements. it dipped into the low 40s overnight. we will begin with peter alexander in maryland getting a ride on the ice breaker in the frozen chesapeake bay. >> i told my 19-month-old daughter to the set of the movie frozen. 3 degrees is the air temperature right now. 18 degrees below zero is the wind chill. we are on board with the u.s. coast guard cutter. the mission is ice breaking. we are in the upper chesapeake bay channel. you will hear it in a moment as we cross through and carve through the ice here. it's 98% covered with ice right now. this ship can cut through 18 inches. it's only about 6 to 8 inches here in terms of thickness. no rescues.

afternoon, cincinnati getting snow. four to eight inches of snow and 1/10 of an inch of ice. to three inches from new york to boston by sunday. the bad news is we are going to be seeing more cold air and another shot on monday and another one on wednesday. this deep freeze is not going anywhere any time soon. i know it will warm up in summer. >> yeah laugh it up in that 40 degrees. it's like summer there compared. >> no one in northern wisconsin is weeping for you. >> should we check in on carson? >> it's 1 on the plaza. feels like negative 16. nothing is icing over yet. my money might be on the milk and the eggs. the coffee is cold and the water might go. can i come in now? >> no.

19-year-old shot and killed 44-year-old tammy meyers a block away from his own house. meyers's husband revealing that his family knew the shooter. >> she fed him and gave him money. >> meyers was taking her daughter home after driving lessons in the school parking lot when something happened involving meyers's car and the other car. after the incident the mother dropped off her daughter at home and picked up her 22-year-old son armed with a hand gun. he followed them home and exchanged a volley of gunfire, one bullet strike meyers in the head. >> the suspect involved in killing miss meyers is in custody and off the streets of las vegas. >> the las vegas defense attorney said this may not be a typical case of road rage.

the war against isis has set off a fierce political storm at home with former mayor giuliani lashing out again overnight challenging the president on his approach and hatred. >> he apologizes for america and criticizes america. >> defiant on thursday. >> i'm right on this and i have no doubt about it and i do not withdraw my word. >> after he told them at a dinner i do not believe the president loves america. he was not brought up the way you and i were brought up through love of his country. >> he's a patriot i'm sure but i hear him criticize america much more often. >> thursday night the former new york mayor doubled down dredging up 2008 campaigns from the former chicago minster from reverent jeremiah wright and even talking about his

and grandfather and went to white schools and learned most of it from white people, adding this is not racism it's socialism or anti-colonialism. the white house does not want to add fuel to the fire but they add plenty of speeches where he praised america and criticized terrorists. >> chuck todd good morning. let's get to the substance of the issue aside from the back and forth we heard about. this goes to the president's somewhat controversial stance not to use the word islamic terrorism or islamic extremism. what's his argument for that and what are opponents saying. there is a substantive issue here. >> he believes and he said it a couple of times on the summit he believes if you call in islamic extremism, what isis wants to do is say that the west

and america have declared war on islam and this helps them recruit and create a holy war which is what isis wants. the president's critics are saying not as elegantinelegantly as rudy giuliani but this is a radical strain of islam and if you don't call it that you are not putting the pressure on supposed moderate leaders to essentially weed out this extremism on their hands. of course all of this we have what has turned into a cabled news fight. all of this, they are not dealing with the two bigger issues here. what are the allies who were not very much into freedom who have over the years quietly had people feed and fund the terrorist groups. or the fact that western europe

has ghettoized muslims in a way that the united states hasn't. we are having a bizarre fight on the sidelines and not confronting the two reasons why you can argue isis has risen. >> there is a lot to unpack here and i know you will do that on sunday on "meet the press." thank you so much. >> natalie has a new push against isis. >> big developments in the mideast. iraq is planning to launch a major offense to retake the city of mosul and according it a u.s. official the united states will back thosests with air strikes and possibly ground troops. as many as 20,000 military and kurdish forces could be involved in the operation this spring and if needed ground forces including special operations could be involved. president obama has said in recent weeks, he would be willing to authorize the move if necessary. new details on the super bug outbreak at ucla medical center

linked to the deaths of two people. one was a 48-year-old transplant patient and the other an 18-year-old man. doctors have notified nearly 200 patients about the possible explosion posure to the bacteria after an investigation connected the infections to instruments used in a special endoscopy. the nature of the endoscopes said they are adding more education materials to the decontamination guidelines. we have good news. seven dogs when were inside a minivan when it was stolen from a chicago neighborhood have been found and all of them reunited with their owners. police say on wednesday, a dog daycare employee was using the van to take the dogs home and two men got in the van and took off. it was caught by surveillance camera and at least one man allegedly had a gun. the search is on for the suspects. officials in india want to set the record straight and say

the tree that president obama planted there three weeks ago is not dead. it just happens to look dead. the tree was planted by the president at a gandhi memorial and now it's just a single lonely stem. it has been giving them sleepless nights but trees often lose their leaves this time of year. the tree is in good health. although it's very meek looking. >> i know a lot more about those trees now. thank you. should we go back out to al in miami? >> at 42 degrees here nowhere near as cold as what you guys have. we are seeing the beginnings of that storm where we are looking at plenty of sunshine out west along the west coast with temperatures a lot more moderate and we expect to see the sunshine in the northeast, but it is brutally cold.

good morning, i'm meteorologist bill henley. a frigid start this morning with a bitter cold day ahead. bitter cold with gusty winds of 10 to 20 miles an hour. at times temperatures will feel below zero. and snow will arrive in philadelphia, an inch or two, then it turns to rain on sunday.

look at this thing. it is five stories high and a man made fountain that shoots water at the air. at the top, the water is still shooting out. that is what has been freezing in the 8 degrees below zero and making for a beautiful sight. people have been coming to take pictures and braving the cold to take gorgeous shots. in the summertime it looks better. it shoots up into the sky and people are taking pictures of that as well. talking about the record breaking temperatures we have records that stood in pittsburgh since 1993. the record was much warmer than today. in jacksonville a record that stood since 1958 and we are crushing the records. pittsburgh at 8 degrees below zero. baltimore 1 and in jacksonville they bottomed out at 24 degrees. not only are we breaking records
