nbc 10 breaking news. >> we're following that breaking news, two philadelphia police officers opened fire on a car after they say the driver nearly ran one of them down. we're live on the scene with an update. >> and i am not going anywhere. >> new jersey senator bob menendez fires back after word comes that he could be facing federal charges soon. what else he has to say about his time in office. and we'll be seeing more sunshine today. here's a live look at center city from our camera at the adventure aquarium in camden. but we have another day of cold to get through before we start feeling the milder temperatures. good morning, everybody. welcome to nbc 10 news today, i'm ted greenberg. 6:00 a.m. on this saturday march 7th. thank you so much for starting our weekend with us. let's say good morning to meteorologist michelle grossman in the first alert weather center.

you've been telling us we're heading for the upper 30s today. that will feel kind of nice. >> yes, we had 20s yesterday, we'll take 10 degrees warmer. we'll be warmer today, warmer tomorrow and then even warmer during the workweek. we're starting the trend to feel like spring finally, after the frigid winter. we'll warm up to the 30s later on this afternoon. a beautiful-looking morning. lots of sunshine before we see a little more cloud cover later on this afternoon in spots. 12 degrees in philadelphia 1 degree in chester springs. if you want to look at the numbers, a lot of people like to get outdoors, 5ks start in march, 10ks -- well they don't start, a lot of people start running for them in march. 3 below zero in oxford. then to the south and east we are looking at 21 degrees in avalon, 6 in millville and 14 in dover. factor in the wind it feels colder, 4 in philadelphia

feeling like 1 below zero in lancaster. the wind chill in allentown, 10 below zero. the wind chill in millville is 3 below zero. it's a frigid morning. cold later on this afternoon, 12 degrees below what is expected to are this time of year. we have clear skies, more cloud cover to the north and west. partly cloudy skies, more sunshine returns on sunday. for today, plan on a quiet day, by 9:00 a.m. mostly sunny, 18 degrees. by lunch time 29 and by 3:00 p.m., 37 degrees. 50 is normal for this time of year. we have 50s in your seven-day forecast. we'll look at that straight ahead. we've been following breaking news in philadelphia's old city neighborhood all morning long. police have three people in custody after a shooting and crash. officers say they had to open fire on those suspects. nbc 10's jesse gary is live at the scene in jesse you've moved closer to where all of this ended. tell us why. >> reporter: that's right, ted.

i wanted to give you a better look at the tire tracks that actually are up on to the sidewalk. you can see they go through the snow there's one and here's the other. so this is the set of tire tracks that go from chestnut up on to the sidewalk. we mention this because ted just said the suspects tried to run down a philadelphia police officer. they came right up on the sidewalk. this all started at a parking lot over at black horse alley and second street here in old city. around 2:00 in the morning. investigators say three men opened fire on one victim, then jumped in a cadillac and pulled out of that parking lot, down chestnut, went the wrng way on chestnut. i just showed you the tire tracks where they ran up on to the sidewalk tried to run over a philadelphia police officer. that officer and his partner opened fire. they ultimately arrested the three men and now they're trying to figure outç what led to this shooting, what prompted the violence. investigators have returned to the scene. if you come back live they're a

half block down third and chestnut here in old city. still searching for clues in this case. more information coming up in the next 30 minutes or so. live in old city this morning, jesse gary nbc 10 news. >> philadelphia police are also investigating a deadly shooting that happened overnight. nbc 10 on west indiana avenue in north philadelphia where shots were fired around 2:00 a.m. a man in his 20s was hit and later pronounced dead at the hospital. so far, police have made no arrests. philadelphia continues to react to the shooting death of police officer robert wilson iii. in north philadelphia people continue to build a makeshift memorial at the video game store where officer wilson was killed. police officials say two men walked into the store on thursday and announced a robbery unaware the officer was already inside buying a gift for his son. gunfire then broke out. police say surveillance video shows officer wilson acted quickly, moving away from customers before firing and then getting shot.

officials and mourners agree, his actions likely saved patrons and employees. >> when i got the news that he had passed i mean my heart -- i'm still grieving, i'm shaking. >> when you look at the actions of the officer, he redefined what a hero is all about. >> police arrests ramon williams and his brother, carlton hipps. hipps was wounded in a shootout with officer wilson's partner. st. martin de porres will remember officer wilson with a mass tomorrow. the church is on lehigh avenue not far from thursday's shooting scene. the remembrance mass is scheduled for 10:00 a.m. supporters have established a memorial trust fun for officer wilson's family. finding in about that at nbc10.com. a federal judge says two lawsuits challenging a pennsylvania law linked to a

convicted cop killer, mumia abu abu-jamal abu-jamal. he gave a taped speech for a college commencement at his alma mater, goddard college in vermont. the law bans felons from doing anything that causes mental anguish to crime victims. abu-jamal is serving a life sentence for the 1981 murder of philadelphia police officer daniel faulkner. he was removed from death row in 2012 after a series of federal court appeals. new jersey senator bob menendez maintains his innocence amid reports that he is facing federal corruption charges. the investigation stems from his ties to florida eye doctor and political donor solomon melgen. the justice department is looking into whether or not menendez accepted bribes in exchange for lobbying u.s. officials to help the doctor with business matters. last night, a defiant menendez

denied any wrongdoing. >> let me be very clear. very clear. i have always conducted myself appropriately and in accordance with the law. >> the department of justice is expected to bring criminal charges against menendez in the next few weeks. investigators are looking into what caused this fire at a gloucester county home. this video was sent to us from a viewer. it shows heavy smoke and flames pouring from the heston road home in glassboro around 8:00 last night. it took crews about two hours to get the fire under control. officials say everyone was able to make it out safely but there is extensive damage to that home. today president obama, dozens of members of congress and some surviving marchers will mark selma's 50th anniversary on what is known as bloody sunday in 1965 police beat demonstrators who were marching from selma to montgomery

alabama. several weeks later with be some 30,000 protesters completed their march to montgomery. it was a journey that's been described as the last revolution of the civil rights movement, a fineal step towards equality, including the right to vote. >> we were determined to get the right for all people regardless of the color of their skin to be able to file a ballot to determine their own destiny. >> president lyndon b. johnson signed the voting rights act a few months later which gave african-americans the right to vote. donald norcross will be in selma today to help mark the march. norcross tells us he believes it's important to commemorate the civil rights moment. >> in many ways we've come so far, being there with the president to celebrate the 50th anniversary of how much we've changed but quite frankly how far we still need to go. >> norcross says he hopes the

unity translates to the u.s. congress. angry protesters take to the streets in one wisconsin community after police gun down a man. what authorities say that suspect was doing that forced the officer to fire his weapon. while the delta airlines jet that skidded off a runway during thursday's snowstorm sits in a hangar investigators are hoping the crew can shed some light on what went wrong on that runway.

below zero. it feels like 6 degrees in dover. air temperatures are cold this morning. we're looking at teens across the area. it feels like the air temperature in philadelphia is 14 degrees but we have single digits across the area. on the map indicating very cold air. 11 degrees in mt. pocono 5 in pottstown as well as reading, 1 below zero is the air temperature. 8 degrees in atlantic city at the airport and 14 in dover. as we go throughout time here the temperatures won't rise all that fair probably topping out in the upper 30s, around 38 degrees. by later on this afternoon, 3:00, 4:00 this afternoon. if you're headed out for saturday night plans, you're dealing with the 30s, even the low 30s to the north and west. dress for freezing temperatures to the knowledge and west as you head out tonight. even 20s to the south and east. for today, we're counting on a clear and cold day. radar showing us we are dry right now, sunshine we'll have sunshine throughout the day. increasing clouds especially to the north and west. and then as we head throughout

6:15. new this morning in madison, wisconsin, protesters are calling the shooting death of a 19-year-old man by police unjustified. last night, officers responded to a report of a man walking in traffic and hitting pedestrians. an officer follow him to a house. according to the police chief, the officer went inside the home and was attacked by the man. there was a struggle before the officer pulled out his gun and shot him. president obama says this weekend's justice department report on the police in ferguson missouri exposes a system in need of an overhaul. the justice department's investigation followed the deadly shooting of unarmed black teenager michael brown by a white police officer. attorney general eric holder said his department would use its full authority to reform the ferguson police which could even mean dismantling the force. so far, two ferguson police officials have resigned in the wake of the report while a third was fired. yesterday, the president told a college audience in south carolina about the choice

ferguson's police force now faces. >> are they going to enter into some sort of agreement with the é- justice department to fix what is clearly a broken and racially biased system. or if they don't, then the justice department has the capacity to sue. >> the doj report said police in ferguson consistently violated citizens' civil rights. be sure to tune in to nbc 10 @issue tomorrow morning at 11:30 right here on nbc 10. prosecutors have rested in the trial of a burlington county man accused in the decades old murder for etan patz. the maple shade man told authorities he choked etan and

put his body in a bag and tossed it in a box. the defense calls it a false confession. 6-year-old etan patz disappeared while walking alone to a school bus stop in new york city in 1979. his body was never found and the case sparked a national movement to find missing children. the trial is expected to last at least another month. we're getting our first look at police video from a riot the night the ohio state buckeyes won the national football championship. the video shows police in columbus using mace and pepper spray to try to clear the street after a crowd of students try to force its way into ohio stadium to celebrate back in january. the students say officers overreacted. police officials admitted their communication and preparation should have been better that night. weather. and a good saturday morning. it's the cold one. we'll be cold all day long.

skidded off a rain wayunway at laguardia. it smashed through a fence and came to a stop feet away from flushing bay. tomorrow marks one year since the dis-tearrius disappearance of malaysia airlines flight 370. officials say if they cannot find the missing jetliner by the end of may, they will go back to the drawing board and come up with a new plan. march 8th during a flight from kuala lumpur to beijing. 239 people were on board. manufacture their loved ones are still hoping for some kind of closure. >> i still remember grabbing his hand saying be safe see you later, gave hum a hug. it's burned in my memory. >> despite an international search effort there has been no sign of that plane.

skies. by 3:00 p.m. more cloud cover, partly sunny, 37 degrees. warmer on sunday even warmer during your workweek. we're talking 50s, mid-50s. i'll tease that ahead. we'll talk more about that coming up. 6:31 now. we continue to follow breaking news in philadelphia. police say a car nearly rammed down an officer as the three men inside were trying to get away from a shooting scene. now those men are under arrest. nbc 10's jesse gary has been walking us through what happened. he's live in old city. jesse, tell us the latest. >> reporter: good morning again to you, ted. detectives were here a few hours ago, up to a few minutes ago but they've left. now all that's left is a patrol car here on scene. this all started around 2:00 in the morning. if we take a look at our video, in a parking lot near black horse alley and second street here in old city. investigators say three men opened fire on one victim then they jumped in a cadillac and sped away from the scene. they went down second and then

made a wrong turn on to chestnut, went the wrong way on chestnut, which is westbound. down the block, ultimately veered uxç on to the sidewalk and tried to run down a philadelphia police officer. that officer, his partner opened fire at that vehicle. they ultimately were able to take the three suspects into custody. the one person that those suspects are shooting at, he was hit in the leg. he's been taken to a hospital. we're working to try and get a better condition update. all we have right now is that he was hit in the leg. they're investigating what sparked this shooting. again, detectives were out, up till about maybe 20 minutes ago, but then they just drove away. they're leaving one philadelphia cruiser down at the scene where the car still sits. live in old city, jesse gary, nbc 10 news. also in philadelphia one man is dead following an overnight shooting. nbc 10 on west indiana avenue in north philadelphia where shots were fired around 2:00 a.m. police have not said what may have led to the shooting. so far, no arrests. this morning, the justice

process is under way for two men accused of killing philadelphia police officer robert wilson iii. police arrested ramon williams and his brother, carlton hipps. both face murder and attempted robbery charges. williams was arraigned last night. hipps was wounded in a shootout with officer wilson's partner. hipps is in the hospital wearing officer wilson's handcuffs. people to continue to build a makeshift memorial at the video game store in north philadelphia where officer wilson was killed. police officials say two men walked into the store on thursday announcing a robbery, unaware the officer was inside buying a gift for his son. gunfire broke out. police say surveillance video shows officer wilson acted quickly, moving away from customers. ss before firing and then getting shot. they say his actions likely saved patrons and employees. >> not only in doing thinkshis job, he

protected the store and store employees. he was a hero. >> st. martin de porres in north philadelphia will remember officer wilson tomorrow with a mass. the church is on lehigh avenue not far from thursday's shooting scene. the remembrance mass is scheduled for 10:00 a.m. and supporters have established a memorial trust fund for officer wilson's family. you can find out more information on that on nbc10.com. new jersey senator bob menendez is defending his name amid reports that he's facing federal corruption charges. the allegations stem from a federal investigation into the senator's ties to florida eye doctor and political donor, solomon melgen. the justice department is looking into whether or not menendez accepted bribes in exchange for lobbying u.s. officials to help the doctor with business matters. while the senator has acknowledged taking some actions that could have appeared to benefit his friend a defiant menendez denies any wrongdoing. >> every action that i and my

office have taken for the last 23 years that i have been privileged to be in the united states congress has been based on pursuing the best policies for the people of new jersey and of this entire country. >> the department of justice is expected to bring criminal charges against menendez in the next few weeks. happening today, a vigil will be held for the victim of a deadly hit and run in the holmesburg section of philadelphia. in december, teresa poesy was killed crossing state road two .pdays before christmas. investigators say she was hit by a tow truck and the driver never stopped. surveillance video captured the truck speeding down the road. police have yet to make an arrest. the victim's family tells nbc 10 teresa would have turned 34 this weekend and they still have hope her killer will be brought to justice. jury deliberations will resume on monday in the murder case of the so-called black madam. winslow is charged in the death of a 20-year-old british dancer in 2011. she's accused of killing ging the

woman in 2011. winslow is charged with third degree murder and manslaughter and practice inging medical procedures without a license. in mercer county a woman is behind bars after a video surfaced online showing her performing a sex act on a 4-year-old boy. she confessed to the crime as well as taking inappropriate pictures of the boy. the child is now in the custody of state child services. pennsylvania state authorities say an easton police officer was justified in killing a man after a chase and crash in october. you're looking at video from the scene at 13th and spring guarden in easton in october. police started chasing the man in palmer township after an officer tried to pull him over for driving on the wrong side of the road. police say the officer shot

richard sherman iii after he rammed a police cruiser twice. state authorities said no charges will be filed again the officer. from our delaware bureau happening today, police and civic leaders. it's scheduled for the hanover presbyterian church this morning at 9:00. forum will focus on policies to promote peace in the community and better relationships between law enforcement and citizens. wilmington police chief bobby cummings will be one of the featured speakers. today thousands of people will gather in selma, alabama, to remember the peaceful civil rights march that turned violent 50 years ago on what is known as bloody sunday in 1965 police beat demonstrators who were marching from selma to montgomery in support of racial equality. it's considered a flash point in civil rights movement. president lyndon b. johnson

after their win thursday the flyers moved to within four points of the boston bruins for the final wild card playoff spot. orange and black in boston for the biggest game of the season today at 1:00 on comcast sports net. goaltender steve mason's mind hasn't completely been focused. the flyers announced they and goaltender's coach jeff reese has parted ways. mason says he owes his success to reese. >> right from the start of working with him, he was somebody that expressed a ton of confidence in my abilities to get back to a point where he knew i could play at. it was -- it's been a tough couple days here. >> the flyers welcome holy ghost prep freshman patrick cannon to practice on friday. nearly two weeks ago, cannon suffered a fractured vertebrae in his neck after colliding with a teammate during practice. it's an injury that almost always results in paralysis, but thankfully cannon is back on
