that's why you can see this vicious backup for 26 minutes. it's pretty early for that. upper marion dealing with an accident scene there around gulf road and long road. river line is currently operating with 30 minute service from trenton to camden due to signal problems. we're following breaking news for you this morning. police are hunting for a gunman who shot and killed a delivery man in philadelphia. it started at 10:30 last night in crescentville. it happened on north hill creek drive. the victim crashed a few minutes later on adams avenue. "nbc 10's" matt delucia is live in crescentville. matt tell us more about what happened. >> tracy, the driver pulled into this development here off adams avenue on bing ham street. by the time he left he was desperately trying to get away. he crossed the avenue and went up the embankment and crashed into a utility pole behind the fence there. philadelphia police tell us the 49-year-old man was making the
delivery of chinese food at around 10:30 tonight. either while he was still in the car or just getting out a dozen gunshots come in his direction and at least one hits him in the shoulder. after he sped off and crashed police and paramedics found that man unconscious inside his car. he was pronounced dead on arrival at einstein medical center. at this hour investigators believe this may have been robbery. >> we found 12 spent shell casings and some broken glass from the victim's driver door window. >> there was also a lot of blood in that car and even chinese food still in bags. presumably the food this man was trying to deliver late last night. as you can see out here live police are still holding the scene until investigators get back out here later this morning. for now that gunman is still on the run. matt delucia, "nbc 10 news." also breaking from overnight, a police officer shot one suspect also shot and
a second now under arrest. it all went down late last night in west philadelphia. the officer confronted two drug suspects at 51st and master streets around 10:15 last night. police say one of the men shot the officer. "nbc 10's" katy zachry is live outside presbyterian hospital in university city. katy, your honor telling us that the officer's friends tell us he was in good spirits this morning. >> reporter: that's what we're hearing, chris from people close to him. the injured officer is daniel kostick where he is at penn presbyterian hospital. his friends and police colleagues tell us he will be okay. he was brought here late last night after he was shot in the arm by a suspect. officer kostick had been on patrol when they approached a van. they were investigating someone inside for possible drug activity. the van took off but later officer cost particular questioned the man on a nearby
street. >> they were having a brief discussion. camping world truck ostick was still on his bike. then the man says i don't want to do this and he fires striking him in his right arm. >> reporter: officer kostick returned fire and the officer is being treated and the suspect is being treated at hahnemann hospital. police tell us overnight they arrested a second suspect in the shooting. that suspect was found with a shotgun. it's been a scary past several weeks for the philadelphia police department. last night shooting came just weeks after another officer was killed in the line of duty. sergeant robert wilson iii died in march as he stopped a robbery at a video game store in north philadelphia. two men are charged with his murder. it is 6:04. stunning new images from overnight showing a burning septa bus in south philadelphia. one of our colleagues at "comcast sportsnet" took this video near the wells fargo center.
the driver and passengers made it off the bus without being hurt. investigators are looking into what caused that fire. also new from overnight, a woman accused of abandoning her disabled son in the woods officially faces an attempted murder charge now. nyia parler was officially charged this morning. she left her 21-year-old disabled son in cobb creek park for five days. happening today, loved ones of 2-year-old david alacea who was killed in a hit and run plan to hand out flyers that they hope will finally lead to the arrest. the white car you see there, police say the couple who owns the car turned it over to investigators one week ago but they were not the ones driving. philadelphia police have also made no arrests in the hit and run that killed a 4-year-old boy on the same day of the alacea case.
lateef wilson was hit and killed. detectives said they have to match evidence from the scene with evidence on the vehicle. a judge will decided to if a man accused of shooting his father on the schuylkill express way will stand trial. kay mere corbin has a hearing today. he shot his dad in the head while his dad was driving near conshohocken conshohocken. he was upset because his parents were taking him to rehab. happening today classmates and teachers will remember a st. joe's prep student who collapsed during football practice and later died. a school memorial service for ryan gillyard will be held this afternoon. public viewing and funeral mass will be held tomorrow morning in havertown. he collapsed during spring training. a fire marshall looks for a cause that killed a man who's described as a fixture in his south philadelphia neighborhood.
joe derosa lived on federal street for decades. he was in his late 60s. we're told he spent a lot of time with his friends at a neighborhood social club there. a small fire broke out in his bedroom yesterday afternoon. crews found derosa in the bedroom. firefighters aren't sure why he couldn't escape. >> there were working smoke alarms in the home. we believe they activated. the occupant was unable to get outside. it is a tragedy. now your "nbc 10" first alert weather with meteorologist bill henley. >> getting a cold and breezy start this morning with clouds as well. look at the cloudy view from cape may. that's a live view from the marquis de lafayette hotel. the clouds will not stay with us all day. they'll be blowing out of here this afternoon and the sunshine will be bright but don't look for a big warmup during the day today. it's another chilly one ahead. see the clouds over center city and beyond?
this is the view from the comcast center. clouds indeed are being blown through the area. we're seeing winds 26 miles an hour. that's making the temperatures feel colder. 35 in doylestown, millville is 38 degrees while it's 40 degrees and holding in philadelphia. clouds are breaking some in the pocono mountains. fast-moving clouds and in the mountains we might see a flurry or two before the clouds leave completely. dry in philadelphia but north and west these are snow showers that are pushing into northeastern pennsylvania scranton seeing a few flurries and farther to the north some flurries as well. the clouds will be thinning out. 44 the high temperature in the mountains today while in the low 50s for allentown and quaker town. bright sunshine takes over after a cloudy start for doylestown mount holly, trenton and at the shore clouds to start with. this afternoon it will be sunshine 58 degrees in rehoboth. dover, chillier in vineland. 60s is what we'll normally see

into philadelphia this morning, we have no problems on the betsy or the walt but we're down to three lanes on the ben franklin bridge due to ongoing construction. it's 10 after 6:00 right now. more than a dozen students are hurt after a stage collapsed at an indiana high school. this morning we're hearing from witnesses who describe the chaotic scene that started as a musical performance. plus the frustration is mounting in baltimore where protesters are demanding justice after a man is arrested. they're asked to step up their efforts this weekend.

accused about lying about narcotics arrests on police documents and christopher jackson stole a witness's cell phone. jackson and hulmes are suspended with intend to be dismissed. this man is wanted in a robbery last friday. he broke into a home in radner last friday. when the owner came home he faced her with a suitcase of jewelry, electronics and cash. he got off the park view station before the 69th street terminal. >> typically those people that get off there live in the area or know the area. not a business oriented neighborhood. so we assume that somebody in that neighborhood possibly knows the man. >> now radner police are offering a $2500 reward for information leading to an arrest.
this is new video this morning of a stage collapse at a school in indiana that injured more than a dozen students. the stage suddenly gave way while the students were giving a musical performance. >> all of a sudden the floor just fell and everybody just fell down, everyone. >> i see mothers of the performers screaming for their children. are you okay? they can't find them. >> all of the injured students are being treated at hospitals. at least one of them is in critical condition. 6:16 now. let's see if that situation on 76 is clearing up any or getting worse. >> "nbc 10" first alert traffic reporter jessica boyington is watching that. jessica. >> thank you guys. good morning. we're dealing with major delays in the schuylkill expressway on the westbound side due to an accident taking out the right-hand shoulder up near gladwyn. reports around 30th street as well. the entire westbound side is dealing with the problems almost a half an hour headed westbound from the vine street expressway
up towards the blue route. you can see no problems on the eastbound side. good thing heading into center city. it will take you 13 minutes from the blue route up towards the vine street expressway. head out to new jersey on the 42 freeway, currently no problems there as well. northbound is where it generally starts to jam up. still a little early for that. five minutes headed from 55 up towards the walt whitman bridge. good news there. as we head out to upper marion gulf road and long road another crash pushed over to the shoulder. watch out. we'll update you. now your "nbc 10" first alert weather with meteorologist bill henley. >> it is 6:17. the sun is up but to start with we're not going to see a lot of it. clouds are moving through the area. actually blowing throughout some cold dusty wind. it's 40 in philadelphia but the wind is steady at 21 miles an hour. the wind just got stronger. it's now gusting to 29 miles an hour. the wind chill is at 30 degrees right now. even colder in the pocono mountains. it's dropped into the 20s this morning.
below freezing for the lake and the wind making it feel like it's in the teens. we'll see sunshine this afternoon. even though we're getting a cold start in the 30s and very low 40s, we will wind up in the 50s this afternoon which is a good deal warmer than it is right now in camden. 38 degrees. 37 in haden field. cold start for voorhees. and glendoor. we need the sunshine but there are clouds blowing through the area for now. look to the west and you see the tail end of these clouds moving into western pennsylvania. so the cloud cover will be here for much of the morning and then it will break out into sunshine this afternoon. we'll still have the winds that will keep temperatures chilly for today. forecast is calling for winds out of the west northwest at 14 miles an hour. that's at 8:00. clouds thinning by 11:00 a.m. by 2:00 this afternoon we'll break out into sunshine. low 50s at 2:00. top out in the middle 50s

at 6:23 a gorgeous view just after sunrise in the city of philadelphia. it is cool this morning. 38 degrees in the city and the wind chill making it feel cooler. some of you even north and west may see some frost on the ground. meteorologist bill henley says we will warm up into the mid 50s today. still lower than normal. and then there's a chance of rain pushing in for possibly tomorrow. bill will pinpoint that for us in a moment. family, friends, and community leaders came together last night for a vigil for a man who was badly beaten by a mom at a gas station in olney two weeks ago. robert barnes family says doctors tell them they don't believe he'll ever wake up and will remain in a permanent vegetative state. barnes sister tells us she hopes those responsible will pay for what they did. >> now i won't ever have the
opportunity to look him in his eyes again and tell him i love him because these people decided the right thing to do was to beat my brother. >> then police indicate there could be more arrests in this beating. witnesses say that one of the attackers thought that the victim had an altercation with her child but police say there's actually no evidence of that. it is 6:24. from our south jersey bureau another legal victory for an officer who was cleared of charges related to his arrest of an assembly man. a judge ruled that joseph debuonoventura should be paid for some of his suspension. they had the right to suspend him but not without pay. still to be determined whether he will be paid for the 2 1/2 years he missed while awaiting trial. now he was acquitted of charges that he made a bogus drunk driving arrest when he stopped paul moriarity, an assembly man, in 2012. happening today -- stand by for this. we're expecting a big announcement about a big name in

"nbc 10's" matt delucia has been following the story. matt, you told us police are trying to determine a motive here and that it's looking like it could be robbery, right? >> reporter: that's right, chris, but making the task harder this morning is the fact that there's not a whole lot of surveillance video in this area. just behind me the scene has not
changed all morning. you can see the victim's car behind that fence there. he crashed into a utility pole while trying to get away. philadelphia police tell us the 49-year-old man was making a delivery of chinese food to the 500 block of hill creek park around 10:00 last night. while he was still in the car or just getting out to make the delivery, 12 gunshots come in his direction. at least one hit him in the shoulder. that's when he tried to speed away. he crossed adams avenue. went up an embankment and crossed into the utility pole. when they got here they found him unconscious inside the car. they took him to einstein medical center where he was dead on arrival. >> right now we're not sure if the victim was robbed. we're not even sure if the victim had exited his vehicle when he was shot. we believe he was city shot while sitting in the driver's seat of the vehicle or possibly shot just outside of the
vehicle. we are expecting investigators to come back out here. they went over to the chinese restaurant where the victim worked trying to figure out who placed this order and if the driver expressed any concerns. for now the gunman is still on the run. i'm matt delucia, "nbc 10 news." 6:34 also breaking from overnight. philadelphia police arrested a second suspect wanted for shooting a police officer. the officer confronted two drug suspects at 51st and smastster around 10:15 last night when one of the men shot him. "nbc 10's" katy zachry is live at presbyterian hospital in penn city. how's the officer doing? >> reporter: he's doing well in good spirits according to those close to him. he was brought here to penn presbyterian hospital around 11:00 last night when he was shot in the arm by a fleeing suspect. earlier officer kostick and his
partner was on bike patrol when they approached a van. the van took off but officer kostick later found the man in question in the nearby area. investigators say the suspect told him, quote, i don't want to have to do this then pulled the trigger shooting officer kostick in the right arm. the officer returned fire hitting the suspect. he's now in police custody at hahnemann hospital. >> obviously we do not know what was on this guy's mind. to have someone say something like that is highly unusual and then to fire at a police officer like that, it makes you wonder gives you pause. >> look closely at this video. if you look closely you can make out a slew of officers arresting a man. he is -- that man is the second suspect in the shooting. when he was arrested he had a shotgun on him. officer daniel kostick has been with the philadelphia police force for the last eight years. he's married and has two
children. he is a' signed to the 19th district here in west philadelphia. reporting live katy zachry "nbc 10 news." 6:35 now. an autopsy should give us some answers about a fetus found at a recycling center in camden. that was found yesterday. it's into the yet known how it died or how it came to be at the recycling plant. detectives say they could not determine the gender of the fetus. philadelphia police arrested a woman after they say a first grader took her heroin to school. officers say they found 14 baggies in the car of latoria faulk when they arrested her. the first grader grabbed some and took it to william cramp school on tuesday and showed it to friends. police are questioning the child's mother but she has not been charged. now your "nbc 10" first alert weather with meteorologist bill henley. >> clouds are overhead.
the wind is blowing and it is cold this april morning. feels more like february. the temperatures have come way down and the wind has been steady this morning. without sunshine going to need to bundle up. grab a jacket if you're heading out the door. look at the pocono mountains, 29 degrees. cloudy and holding at 29 degrees. believe it or not, if it wasn't for the clouds, the temperatures would have gone lower this morning. seeing some breaks in the clouds but otherwise dramatic view of the skies from the marquis de lafayette hotel in cape may. nothing falling from the clouds in our area. north and west like yesterday tracking snow showers blowing into the pocono mountains. light showers. as the day goes on the clouds will be thinning out and the temperatures will climb a little bit but nowhere near the normal temperatures. should be in the 50s this time of year in the pocono mountains. this afternoon, 44 degrees. 54 in reading. 52 in quaker town.

one suspect who was also wounded. today philadelphia's child welfare agency will pay tribute to a murder victim. the department of human services will give kim jones its annual crusader award. jones worked for a nonprofit called turning points for children. last night they honored jones at the kids at heart gala fundraiser at the union league. it will help thousands in need. turning point ceo says events like this help them cope with jones's death. >> there's a person missing from my life you know and i keep seeing that video of that person walking up behind her and it's just -- it's very very sad. there's still a wound there. >> jones was shot to death in january while waiting for a bus. authorities say a co-worker allegedly killed her because she was going to turn him in for embezzlement. this morning, former philadelphia mob boss joey merlino is a freeman again.
they released him from a prison in florida where he's been since january. they say he violated parole while meeting with other mobsters. he was ordered released immediately. happening today with decision 2016 pennsylvania senator bob casey is expected to endorse fellow democrat hillary clinton. he plans to send an e-mail announcing he's backing clinton. the e-mail will taut clinton's dedication to fighting for the middle class. he backed obama over clinton during the 2008 white house race. three republican senators have announced they will run for the republican nomination ted cruz rand paul and marco rubio. 6:45. in the kathleen kane investigation they postponed a hearing. the hearing was scheduled for montgomery in county court. yesterday they challenged the basis for the hearing claiming that the judge in the case is biased. kane's office is accused of
leaking secret grand jury information. she fired a prosecutor after a judge ordered a ban on retaliating against witnesses. a bill was a proffered that allows nurses to use narcan. health lawmakers approved a plan to give school nurses access to the drug and training to use it. they did not mandate the schools keep the drug on hand. the delaware senate approved the measure and the governor doesn't need to sign it. st. joseph's university is responding to criticism to have philadelphia mayor's michael nutter deliver the commencement speech. the cardinal newman society is upset because of mayor nutter's support of the lgbt community and he officiated a same-sex marriage. the group says catholic institutions should not honor those who defy fundamental catholic principles. a spokesperson tells us, quote mayor nutter is an outstanding choice to adjust our graduates.

today comcast could walk away from its proposed takeover much time warner. bloomberg first reported that yesterday. this comes days after several u.s. senators urged the federal communications commission and the u.s. department of justice to block the merger. they said the deal would lead to higher prices and fewer choices for some cable and internet users. combining the number one and number two u.s. cable companies would have put nearly 30% of tv and more than half of broadband subscribers under one roof. comcast is based in philadelphia and is one of the city's largest employers. it's also the parent company of "nbc 10" you a federal task force will meet for the first time next week to discuss the problems faced after superstorm sandy. they'll discuss rising flood insurance rates and fema's role in helping storm victims recover. new jersey senators cory booker and robert menendez will lead the task force as well as victims from new york and victims. menendez will remain on the task
force. earlier in the week menendez's lawyers said they'll ask the judge to throw out the case based on the first amendment and another clause. a firsthand look at what it's like to fight a fire. they wore a helmet camera. they got to the scene in monmouth county. flames were already shooting out of the mansion. the seabright firefighter volunteers checked to make sure everybody got out okay. they did. they will study the video in the future to help them. >> checking the fire afterwards, it's one of the best tools you can have besides water. >> this will they'll share the video with departments across the country. coming to a wrist near you soon. apple's new watch is coming in a few weeks. it will give you wrist friendly notifications without having to use your phone. the device is currently back ordered through about june.

mountain farm. it can still come down another degree or two before the temperatures come back up. you can see the clouds blowing through the area. the tail end of the clouds are just into western pennsylvania. cold winds blowing will keep the clouds going so we'll see clouds clear out during the day today but some cloudiness will move right back in over the weekend. look at the clouds over texas. that's a storm system that could bring parts of the area some rain late on saturday. the heavierdown down pours south of austin. to the south in delaware central and southern delaware some rain showers. the possibility will continue into the evening hours and even into sunday morning there's a possibility that parts of delaware and south jersey will see rainfall. the rest of the area will stay dry. we'll get breaks of sunshine at 11:00 and sunshine 51 degrees

we will be there tomorrow. this morning we continue to follow two breaking news stories in philadelphia. matt delucia is covering the murder of a delivery driver. matt. >> reporter: chris, the manhunt continues at this hour. what we've learned about this crime overnight. that's coming up. >> reporter: i'm katy zachry. a philadelphia police officer was shot by a man who told him, quote, i don't want to have to do this. after the break i'll have ang update on the officer's condition and tell you where two suspects are right now.
adams avenue and bing ham street. police say the victim was a 49-year-old man delivering chinese food when a dozen gunshots were fired at him. at least one hit him in the shoulder but he managed to drive away and get about two blocks before crashing into a utility poll pole. he died at the hospital. investigators believe this may have been a robbery. investigators are due back out here later this morning to try to gather more evidence as this manhunt continues. live in crescentville, matt delucia, "nbc 10 news." >> reporter: and i'm katy zachry live outside penn presbyterian hospital wherein side officer daniel kostick is recovering after he was shot. it happened around 10:30 last night when he was on bike patrol and approached the van investigating someone inside for possible drug activity. the van took off but officer kostick found the man in question at a later point. investigators say the man told him, i don't want to have to do
