>> we will have that in a few moments. let's start on this thursday morning with our top story. the fbi says the man shot and killed this week was planning to kill police officer, they say they watched as he ordered knives online with to carry out his plot. we have an interview in a moment. first the startling revelations from justice correspondent pete williams. pete good morning. >> reporter: matt good morning. boston police and the fbi say they've stopped the man at the center of this plot as he was preparing to attack police officers here in massachusetts, calling them an easy target after they say he discarded the idea of attacking a woman in new york and beheading her. investigators now say that when boston police and the fbi shot 26-year-old usama raheem tuesday they feared he was about to board a bus carrying a knife to attack police officers police say the fbi concerned about his

jihadist media postings already had him under under surveillance. newly filed court documents says the fbi was watching as he went on amazon twice last week and bought three military style blades. raheem told two other people he planned to behead a victim in another state. law enforcement say it was pamela geller the activist and commenttator who organized the draw mohammed comp test in texas. she says they targeted me for violating sharia blasphemy laws. they overheard him say on a wiretapped phone call that he changed his mind and decided to attack massachusetts police officers later this very day or the next. the fbi says he told a friend quote, i'm just going to go after them those boys if blue 'cause it's the easiest target t. man investigators say he was talking to on the phone, 25-year-old david wright appeared wednesday if federal court charged when courageing raheem to get rid of evidence by

destroying the smartphone. congress am leaders briefed on the plot say isis social media played a role. >> this is a growing trend. it's a growing problem in terms of our counterterrorism atmosphere. and it's really terrorism gone viral. >> reporter: also wednesday, boston police and the fbi took the unusual step of showing community leadaries under surveillance video of the raheem shooting saying it proves that officer were backing away as he advanced on them with a knife. a third man in rhode island who investigators say was in on some of the conversations with raheem has been questioned by the fbi but no charges have been filed. as for the idea of attacking that woman in new york one official calls that strictly talk, a fantasy. savannah. >> pete williams thank you so much. bill evans is boston's police commissioner. he is with us exclusively this morning. mr. commissioner good morning. thanks for being with us. >> good morning. >> let me pick up where pete

left off. your officers have actually talked to a third individual. are there any other suspects sought or are you satisfied now you have talked to or have in custody everyone connected with this plot? >> i believe we have everyone connected with this plot. you know but you know we're still working with the fbi and the joint terrorism task force to make sure we can tie up loose ends on this as can you tell this was a very real and it was very dangerous and what unfolded on tuesday morning could have saved not only police officers' lives but who knows where this could have went otherwise also. >> but there have been reports that pamela gel ar this anti-islam activist was a target initially of this suspect, how serious did you take that? did you think he was far along in being able pull something like that off or was it something more along the lines of wishful thinking? >> i think it was more along the lines of wishful thinking.

you know but we had 24/7 under surveillance on him and we were monitoring all potential targets and there was some mention of that name. but, you know we were focused locally here. he had local roots. so our concern was what he could do here especially here in the city of boston. >> in the early hours after the shooting of this suspect, there was a claim i believe by his brother that he was shot in the back by police officers and that he was on the phone at the time. you took the rather unusual step of showing under surveillance video of the incident to community leaders. why was that important to you? and do you feel you have put this issue to rest? >> yeah it was important. about four weeks ago we had won of our officer, officer joe moi na han, there was a bit of a uproar after. that you know at that time we had community leaders in. we showed them the video and you

know with all the unrest around the country regarding police-involved shootings, we thought it was important to show that video and i made a commitment to the community that we would do that in all our cases and that's why yesterday we had all the community in islamic leaders, from all religions, community, na acp. and we showed the video of what took place on tuesday morning. you know clearly, it shows our officers walking up to this individual with no guns and then within seconds retreating five policemen, backtracking backtracking and witness and their accounts asking this and demanding him to drop his weapon drop his weapon and it left them no choice as we found out yesterday in the affidavit, you know he was on a mission. he was out to get someone in blue. so it's easy to understand now why he didn't put down that large military knife.

we faced a serious threat here and, you know i'm glad that affidavit came out because it makes it clearer why we had to stop him, why we had to question him before he got on a bus and went throughout the city of boston. >> commissioner bill evans, a close call it seems, we will continue to follow this investigation. thank you so much. >> thank you. >> all right, savannah thank you. now to the widening anthrax scare, the pittsburgh now says its lab may have sent out more than double the number of live anthrax samples than originally thought t. shipments were sent across the united states and to three foreign countries. but authorities are trying to keep the public calm. nbc's pentagon correspondent jim miklazewski has details on this good morning. >> reporter: good morning, matt. not only has this shipment of those suspected live anthrax shipments dramatically increased, senior defense officials are warning this morning it will only get worse. by the pentagon's own count, the

number of potentially deadly shipments of live anthrax has more than doubled. 51 research labs and 17 states district of columbia and three foreign countries received the shipments over the past ten years and still counting. >> we expect this number may rise because the scope of the investigation is going on. >> reporter: anthrax shipments from military labs like dugway proving ground in utah are eradiated. that's supposed to kill any live anthrax spores before they're shipped to other labs for research. >> we actually issue a death certificate that says this organism is now dead. >> but in at least two slipments to labs in maryland and canada the system failed and the anthrax was very much alive. despite the potential threat the pentagon set out to assure a wary public demonstrating how anthrax is shipped in small vials by fedex in several sealed containers and packed if dry

ice. >> as of this point, we see absolutely no danger to the broader american public. >> reporter: experts in biochemical warfare agree. >> the chances of getting anthrax from the dielution is nil. >> reporter: three civilians are now on some serious antibiotics, just in case. matt. savannah. >> jim miklazewski at the pentagon thank you very much. natalie is following the tragedy in china. >> unfortunately, heavy rain there forced rescueers to suspend cutting operations today on the capsized cruiseship in the yangtze river as rescuers scramble to find more victims. the death toll has now climbed to 75 as more bodies have been recovered from the overturned ship. but more than 63 others are feared dead. rescuers cut three holes in the

overturned home of the ship in unsuccessful attempts to try to find survives. at least five people were killed wednesday if two separate bus crashes. in houston at least two people were killed and 30 injured after a bus collided with a truck. officials say the bus was carrying migrant workers from mexico to north carolina. meanwhile, in pennsylvania three people were there killed and at least 13 injured from a head-on crash between a bus and a tractor-trailer. the bus was carrying tourists from italy. the wlis of 2016 presidential hopefuls is growing. former governor jeb bush almost ready to make it official. the republican sent out this tweet late wednesday night that read coming 6.15.15 be the first to know. he is expected to make the announcement at miami-dade college. also rick perry announcing he is making another run for the white house as well. meantime gop presidential hopeful ted cruz is apologizing for a joke he made about vice

[ laughter ] >> well the old time joke came just four days after the vice president's son beau biden died from brain cancer. cruz used facebook and twitter to issue an apooling saying in part it was a mistake to use an old joke ability vice president biden during his time of grief and i sincerely apologize. on to news the chicago blackhawks stole game one of the stanley cup final. the tampa bay lightning had a 1-0 lead for most of the game. however, chicago scored two goals in under two minutes late in the game. they held on to win it two to one.

game two saturday night right here on nbc. wednesday was moving day for a seattle-area family but this move was unlike any other. take a look. it involved this 6200 square foot multi-million dollar mansion t. 92-year-old brick home was going to be torn down so a family decided to buy it. and they use as barge to then move it from seattle to across pugent sound and the family hopes to move in by the end of the summer. it's a pretty house. i'm glad they didn't knock it down. >> amazing what they can do. >> i'd leave it on the barge and travel. >> exactly right. >> a houseboat. >> natalie. thanks. you got big storms out in the plains. >> we do. we have a pretty powerful hurricane in the eastern pacific as well. let's show you what we have going on from rapid city omaha, kansas city, heavy storms firing umm. in fact we have an enhanced

warrants documents that name that man as george wallace, in savpoluos. >> that man mr. wallace exchanged text messages with an unnamed woman and sent her a photograph, a picture of a red back with the ransom money pence of it. according to post the messages read at 9:00 from the woman, dam, i wonder how much it is wallace replied, 40 40,000. she responded, jesus. an hour-and-a-half later he wrote to him, himself, saying package delivered. this morning, three weeks after the mursd of the savalopoulous family the d.c. police are focusing on this man, george wallace, his assistant and personal driver the man that delivered the ransom to the multi-million dollar home n. newly unsealed search warrants

wallace admitted he lied and changed his account about the $40,000 ransom including how he received the package, where he left it and what he was told to get the pack annual. detectives obtained a search warrant for all of his call texts and location beginning sunday may 10th three days before police believe the terrifying ordeal began. nbc news has been unable to reach wallace. darren wint remains the only suspect charged in the murders. investigators are also focusing on records from three cell phones stolen and figuero. they believe the killers forced into the mansion breaking a window pane kicking it in. a shoe or boot print invisible on the outside. police now searching for the footwear that matches that print. does it belong to darren wint? >> there would be a lot of blood

at the scene, so if he was wearing shoes different tan the boot print at the door that would indicate there is at least two perpetrators. >> the murder investigation intensified as the family's two teenage daughters are left to grieve. and those court documents also show some of the evidence that police are looking for in the vehicle, the chevy cruz wint was arrested in and a box truck following. they include weapons that may have been used duct tape that can be used to bind hands and feet as well as a digital video recorder that was missing from this home that can capture and record under surveillance video. savannah now at this time it's unclear exactly what if any of that evidence police have found. >> peter alexander in walk for us thank you. it's a good time to be a sports fan right now, the triple crown race the belmont, the stanley cup finals and an event that starts tonight lebron james and the cleveland cavaliers take on the golden state warriors and

engulfed the family in the "19 kids and counting" show. >> good morning, since the first allegations became public jim and michelle duggar say the victims include four of their daughters, plus someone outside of their family. for the first time we are hearing from a couple of those daughters. >> i think as parents, we felt we're failures. >> reporter: appearing on fox news jim bob and michelle duggar recall the first time josh came to them with a confession. >> josh came to us on his own. he was crying. he had just turned 14. and he said that he had actually improperly touched some of our daughters. >> reporter: at first the duggars say they dealt with it internally but the problems continued. >> it was after that third time he came to us it's where we really felt like, you know what we had done everything we can as parents to handle this in-house

we need to get help. >> reporter: according to a police report newly obtained by "in touch" magazine through the freedom of information act, a document later sealed for court order, josh duggar confessed to his father three times over the course of a year march 2002 july 2002 and march 2003 and it's that delay that concerns some. >> josh duggar should have been removed from the home. he should not have been allowed to stay there. >> reporter: after the third confession the duggars say they sent josh to a training center for boys that made bad choices. >> for days and days, i was saying, you know josh has done some very bad things and he's he's very sorry. >> reporter: the duggars say the training center worked. when josh returned home they had him speak with a state trooper. he was not charged. the duggars say they never felt an obligation to tell authorities sooner. >> as parents, you are not mandatory reporters. the law allows the parents to do

and good morning, everybody. as we look at some temperatures that are a little on the cool side we got this big low pressure system trough of low pressure on the east coast. so we're going to be seeing cooler ocean waters funneled in here around that system plus we got a big upper level high. look at these temperatures talk about a spring chill. anywhere from five to 15 degrees below average. d.c. 57 wilmington 81. 66 in new york city. friday the cool air stays in there, atlanta a little warmer than usual. same with roanoke. on saturday temperatures warm up. again a little below average. and speaking of saturday the running of the belmont stakes american farrow going for that triple crown, hi, i'm "first alert" meteorologist brittney shipp. as we head into the rest of today, temperatures will still
