"nbc 10" breaking news. >> 5:00 and we're following breaking news. a pizza place shootout leaves a suspected robber dead and another on the run. this morning an off duty police officer is being haled a hero to arrive on the scene with overnight developments. plus marking a tragic day in philadelphia. how they will pay tribute to the deadly center city building collapse victims two years later. taking a live look outside right now. some parts of the area saw rain. things are expected to dry out for a nice friday and you're going to want to hear what's in store for the weekend. good morning and welcome to "nbc 10 news today." i'm vai sikahema. >> i'm tracy davidson. it is 5:00 a.m.
let's begin with meteorologist brittney shipp. >> good morning. temperatures warming back into the low 70s today. slowly inching towards our average, which is 80 degrees for this time of year. eventually we'll get there. 52 degrees in pen net square. 54 degrees in pottstown. 50s in pottstown. 57 degrees in beach haven and 56 in woodbine. take a look at the scattered showers that are still moving through our area. we should be done with those as we get closer to your afternoon. temperatures will also push into the low 70s and tomorrow we are going to head into the 80s. a nice day on tap. temperatures will range between 71 and 74 degrees. mostly cloudy skies. mild with just a few stray showers for your morning hours and then improving conditions heading into the afternoon. i'm tracking exactly what you can expect for the weekend from
the shores to the poconos. that's coming up in my full forecast. for now we'll check in with "nbc 10" first alert traffic reporter katy zachry. >> most of us will be waking up with wet roadways when showers have gone through. i just got new information about road work on the vine street expressway eastbound. in one of the cameras you can see there's a construction crew blocking eastbound. i think they may be moving those barriers right now but the construction continues just eastbound when you break off of 76 at the schuylkill expressway and it continues to broad street. only about 1/4 to 1/2 mile. i see them lifting the barriers. if you need to access center city via the vine street expressway eastbound, you have to find an alternate way right now. 76 drive times are looking great. 95 southbound between woodhaven and the vine about 14 minutes. the blue route between 76 and 95 it will take you 15 minutes to go that stretch.
moving into new jersey, 295 the turnpike and the 42 freeway all free and clear. some of that overnight construction will be lifting over the next hour. vai? we continue to follow breaking news this morning. an off duty police officer put his own life at risk to stop a robbery in philadelphia's lawn dale section. nbc 10's monique braxton are live where police are comparing his bravery to an officer who died earlier this year. monique, explain. >> reporter: that's right, vai. they're comparing it to what happened to officer robert wilson iii. luckily this officer did survive. just as we spoke with you last i can tell you that crime scene has returned here to the scene. police tape remains here at tyson and rising sun. on the other side of it to the left, we can tell you that forensic units just re-examined that vehicle. then we saw them walk back to the front of rising sun pizza and go around the corner and head down that alley. now look at our video. our camera captured this exclusive video of an off duty
officers, detective from northwest, uninjured walking with police. we're being told he is lucky to be alive this morning. here's what investigators say happened out here. two men, at least one of them entered as the off duty officer was waiting for his order. the robbers snatched $20 from the detective, then ordered him to get on the floor. he did so. but the officer is cool until he sees the robbers head towards the pizza shop workers. the detective identifies himself, pulls out his weapon. a gun battle ensues. he's being haled as a hero. the circumstances are compared to what happened in march when officer robert wilson iii was killed. >> the same thing that happened when officer wilson was inside the game stop. two individuals came in however, tragically officer wilson was killed in that incident. we're very very lucky that the detective in this case was not
struck by gunfire because he was fired at at least two times. >> reporter: one suspect collapsed outside dying here in the parking lot. he was hit on the left side of his chest. both men were wearing hoodies pulled over their faces. at least one of them had a loaded revolver. that was dropped inside the pizza shop. now police hope surveillance videotape will lead them to the second suspect. in the next half hour we're going to have a description of the now person of interest police hope you can help them capture. live for now in lawndale monique braxton, "nbc 10" news. 5:05 and 56 degrees outside. this morning we have new details about a murder suspect who's the subject of a policeman hunt in camden county. carol bown was stabbed to death in her own driveway in berlin township wednesday night and prosecutors say her ex-boyfriend michael itel did it. "nbc 10" talked to the owner of the salon when bown worked.
itel broke out the windows of her car and bown got a restraining order, got cameras installed at her home and applied for a gun permit. >> she was worried. she feared he was going to do something. >> now we dug up this new jersey criminal background on itel, a 2006 kidnapping crime that we are told involved an earlier girlfriend. investigators are asking for the public's help to track him down. this morning all three men suspected in the assault of a woman on jeweler's row are in jail. last night authorities arrested two additional suspects in the raes. they captured khayree gay shortly after the kidnapping in april. the three suspects kidnapped a woman, threw her in a van and tried to get workplace security codes from her. the victim was tasered, robbed and then released at a cemetery in darby. the victim is recovering with a concussion and broken ribs. the two suspects arrested last night will appear in court later today. it's hard to believe it's
been two years but that's how long it's been since the market street collapse. >> today they'll join together with philadelphia officials to mark the anniversary. a building collapsed onto the salvation army store next door. 6 people died, 13 others were hurt. the demolition contractor and crane operator are scheduled for trial charged with third degree murder. this morning mayor michael nutter and the victim's families will attend a remembrance at the site. these are artists renderings for a memorial at the site. we talked with the architect about the design. >> we worked through the memorial and every aspect of it from the way the families are commemorated, to how the public can perceive it at night and during the day. >> earlier this week project got approval from the city art commission. the next step is putting together permit drawings which
organizers hope to submit to the city by the end of the summer. also today, family members of an 8-year-old philadelphia girl who was seriously hurt by a hit-and-run driver are bringing awareness to the dangers of careless driving. she's already undergone two major surgeries. her right arm was broken in four places. today's rally at love park will focus on saving children and pedestrians from reckless drivers. an emergency landing at philadelphia international airport left a plane nose down and travelers with hours of delays. the plane was headed to new mexico but the pilot realized his landing gear wasn't working and declared an emergency. emergency crews quickly responded to the plane after skidding 1,000 feet coming to a stop. all five passengers walked off safely but the ripple effect was felt by hundreds of other travelers. circling for probably close to an hour. >> there was a gentleman sitting next to me very nervous so i was
focusing on speaking to him. >> flights are scheduled to arrive and depart on time this morning at philly international. happening right now customers looking to get deals at the lilly pulitzer warehouse sale in oak are angry that they are still waiting in line. look at this video. that proves it. the new video this morning of about 50 customers who are there right now. the event at the expo center was supposed to run until 8:00 last night but the doors closed at 6 with hundreds of people still in line. the lily pulitzer company said there were too many customers so they told them to come back in the morning. now your "nbc 10" first alert weather with meteorologist brittney shipp. >> good morning. we are going to see improving conditions today. a few light sprinkles and light rain moving in at the philadelphia international airport. 58 degrees. currently humidity up to 81%. wind speeds at 9 miles per hour. as we head into the afternoon we'll start to see these sprinkles going away. so we'll see more of a mix of

much going on. i'm watching road work on the vine street expressway. this is the vine street expressway eastbound. traffic is not allowed. the barriers have lifted so traffic can proceed into center city philadelphia via the vine. everything looks really good there. moving into delaware now along 95, drive times between 295 and 495 in the wilmington area looking good. 10, 11 minutes in both directions there. moving into new jersey, 295 and the 42 freeway, typical trouble spots. not seeing any issues on these two majors. just some of the overnight construction should be lifting in a bit. >> 5:11. breaking news out of chester. "nbc 10" has confirmed police got into a shootout with someone at the scene where the three fires were set over several days this week. here's what we just learned. while police were guarding the scene because of all the fires there, this video is from tuesday night's fire they saw someone run into an abandoned home. this is last night. police say they shot at him. officers shot back but the
suspect got away. investigators did find the suspect's gun at the scene. we'll continue to follow this breaking story. we'll bring you new information as soon as we get it. this morning we are learning more about what could be the biggest cyber attack ever against america. we will tell you who officials believe is behind this data breach that has landed millions of current and former federal workers at risk. plus police say this pile of guns and knives belonged to that man who jumped the fence and made it into the white house. we'll hear from a former secret service agent about security laps. plus video shows two men setting an suv on fire. police say this is not the only time they've pulled off this type of crime. we'll give you a look at the wanted suspects.

cyber attack on america ever. the suspected culprit is china. they're calling it a massive hack of u.s. government computers. the personal information of at least 4 million employees may have been stolen. they say previous attacks came from this army building in shanghai. china denies it. u.s. officials say the data breach through the office of personnel management opm, could potentially affect every federal agency. for the first time we're seeing the weapons from a man who bolted inside the white house in march. take a look. these photos show guns knives a.m. knew anything that omar gonzalez had in his car when he jumped the fence and got into the front door of the mansion. he pleaded guilty to entering a
building and assaulting a secret service agent. >> they had to cath gore rise the threat this is a death con 5. this is serious. >> prosecutors are recommending prison time and years of supervised release. they added metal spikes to the top of the fence. there is growing concern in colorado about a possible serial sniper. police are investigating several shootings since april. all within a mile of each other. the latest victim was gunned down wednesday on a residential street. two weeks ago a man was shot dead while riding his bike and in april a woman was shot in the neck while driving. police are looking into reports of car windows being blown out in the area. 5:17. a friend of boston marathon bomber dzhokhar tsarnaev will be sentenced. he was convicted last year of conspiracy of obstruction of justice. that was before removing tsarnaev's backpack and laptop from the dorm room after the bombing. prosecutors have recommended a four year sentence.
imagine a car that forces you to take a breathlizer test before driving it. yesterday mothers against drunk driving got a sneak peak at the drug and alcohol detection system. the system includes a breath sense ser and button that detects alcohol -- alcohol levels through the driver's blood flow. some members of congress do like it. the alcohol and restaurant lobby, they're resisting. if it works, congress could make it mandatory for all new cars and trucks but that's at least five years away. 5:18. let's check your friday ride to work and see what's happening on the roads. >> katy zachry has the details. >> vai and tracy, as you may have experienced this morning, wet roadways still falling through your area. live look at 76 and girard avenue where some of the cameras along 76 can see some of that rain glistening off the roadways. not tying anything up. this is the westbound side where traffic is moving fine and eastbound. drive times between the blue

5:24 and 56 degrees outside. it is being called a major victory for a drug that's called viagra for women. the fda voted to approve the pill. it's supposed to increase a woman's sex drive. the manufacturer has to work to limit the side effects like fatigue, and fainting. philadelphia's unemployment rate is down. >> yeah. we're still ahead of the curve. the city's unemployment levels are above the national average. it sits at 6.5. that's a big drop from march's 7.1%. philadelphia returned to the prerecession level faster than the rest of the state and the nation as a whole. they added 4700 jobs from march
