we'll start to see more clearing. by 10:00 a.m. 61 degrees. by 1:00 p.m. 68. our highs today ranging between 71 and 74. i'm also tracking warmer weather as we head into the weekend, especially for philadelphia. it will still stay a bit cooler towards the shore in the poconos. coming up in 10 minutes, for now let's check in with "nbc 10" first alert traffic reporter katy zachry. >> brittney as you said, some people are waking up to spotty rain throughout the area. you may find wet roadways. they're not tying anything up or accounting for any problems. this live camera along 95 southbound side. it was zoomed out quite a bit so you can see the traffic flow a little bit better. the operators, penndot focusing on debris along the drive time signs. hopefully they'll widen out. i can tell you that traffic is running smoothly. the southbound side where we are seeing things pick up. drive times between woodhaven and the vine going south are 13

minutes. the same northbound. we're not seeing as many cars on the road that side. talked about 95. 76 eastbound headed into center city between the blue route and vine 13 minutes. blue route between 76 and 95 is looking good as well. no issues to report there. new jersey roads, 295 the turnpike and the 42 freeway all free and clear of any problems. some of the overnight construction should be lifting around this time. tracy. 5:31. following this breaking news this morning. an off duty police officer is being haled as a hero after he stopped a robbery in the lawndale section of philadelphia. "nbc 10's" monique braxton is live on the scene. what's happening now. >> reporter: hi, tracy. this is what residents are waking up to. crime scene tape marking the rising sun pizza shop. detectives are inside still interviewing the workers, combing through surveillance tape. we captured this video of the uninjured officer walking with

police. here's what investigators say he encountered while awaiting his order. two men, at least one of them armed, entered and grabbed $20 from the detective. they also ordered him to the floor. he did, but when the detective sees the robbers head towards the pizza shop workers, he identifies himself and pulls out his weapon. a gun battle follows shattering the glass at the counter. this morning the detective is being hailed as a hero. two shots missed him but one suspect collapsed and died here in the parking lot. he was hit in his chest according to police. police do hope the surveillance videotape and the loaded revolver left inside the shop will lead them to the second suspect. >> the second suspect fled the scene. it's unknown whether or not he was struck by gunfire from the off duty detective. he's described as a male in his 20s wearing a dark hooded sweatshirt and blue jeans. >> reporter: now the

circumstances here are being compared to what happened in march when officer robert wilson iii was killed. he died during a gun battle with armed robbers inside a game stop. now in the next half hour police tell us they're calling this detective from northwest not identifying him, but they're calling him a hero. we'll have that for you in the next half hour. live now in lawndale monique braxton, "nbc 10 news." 5:33. we have breaking news out of chester this morning. "nbc 10" has confirmed police got into a shootout with someone at the scene where three fires were set over several days this week. here's what we just learned. police are guarding the scene because of all the fires there, and this is video from tuesday night's fire. officers saw someone run into an abandoned home and police say he shot at them. officers shot back. the suspect did get away. investigators did find the suspect's gun at the scene and will continue to follow this breaking story. we'll bring you information as we get it.

it's about 5:34 and 56 degrees outside. new from overnight, the driver who lost control of this suv in east falls is suspected of being drunk. the vehicle flipped on its side on calamet street at 3:30 this morning. the driver was not hurt. police are testing him for dwi. police are on the hunt for a suspect who they say murdered his ex-girlfriend. police say michael itel stabbed and killed his ex-girlfriend wednesday night. we found a 2006 kidnapping charge that involved an earlier girlfriend. this morning all three men suspected in the abduction and assault of a woman on jeweler's row are now in jail. last night authorities arrested two additional suspects in the case. they captured khayree gay shortly after the kidnapping in april. investigators say the three suspects kidnapped the woman from a chestnut street parking garage, threw her in a van and tried to get her workplace

security codes. she worked at a jewelry store. the victim was tasered, robbed then released at a cemetery in darby. >> the victim suffered but survived a brutal horrific assault. these arrests hopefully will bring some measure of relief to the victim to the business that these three men allegedly targeted, to the business community and jewelers row at center 12i and to the public at large. >> the victim is recovering at home from a concussion and two broken ribs. the two suspects will make their first court appearance later today. remembering beau biden. today the final farewell to a favorite son of delaware continues with viewing and memorials in wilmington. yesterday people paid their respects as beau biden lied in honor at the statehouse in dover. beau's father vice president joe biden, and his family stood tearfully as mourners offered comfort at a memorial service. beau biden died saturday of

brain cancer at the age of 46. >> i've never met him but i felt heart broken. >> i felt like they are a well-respected family and i'm honored to be here. >> had he been able to run for governor i'm sure he would have been governor of delaware. he was an amazing person. >> the governor awarded biden posthumously the distinguished service medal and the conspicuous service cross. he was an iraq war hero and served in the delaware national guard for nearly 12 years. today there will be two public viewings for beau biden at saint anthony of padua catholic church from 1:00 to 4:00 and again from 6:00 to 9:00. the funeral mass is tomorrow morning at 10:30 and president barack obama will deliver the eulogy. for more information on the street closures and to watch the service live join our "nbc 10 news" app. chasing history. the belmont stakes fires off.

now your "nbc 10" first alert weather with meteorologist brittney shipp. >> good morning, we're tracking a few light showers moving in this morning into the northern parts of burlington county. these are short lived, light showers. they should be clearing up soon. as we head into the rest of the afternoon, mild conditions. mostly cloudy skies. even a little bit of sunshine. 57 degrees in allentown 54 in pottstown. 56 currently in atlantic city. we're at 57 degrees in wildwood. push into the low 70s today. range between 71 and 74 degrees.

mostly cloudy and mild. just a little bit of shower activity into the morning hours and then we'll start to see clearing. over the next 8 hours expect temperatures to push into the 60s by 10:00 a.m. by 1:00 p.m. 68. today's high in philadelphia, 73 degrees. i'm tracking the return of 80s in my seven day forecast and even the possibility of 9 o0s. 5:40 friday morning. we don't have access you and i don't, to all the cameras that katy has. the one i'm looking over there, it looks pretty good to me. >> she's got hundreds of them. let's see what she's seeing. "nbc 10's" first alert traffic reporter katy zachry. >> it makes the time between hits not a lot of time because i'm checking all of these cameras especially on a morning like today when we're seeing the showers move through, spotty showers. expecting things on roads like here in new jersey live look at cherry hill, 295 at 70 we're seeing volume pick up a little bit but it's not accounting for any problems. no issues along 295.

garden state express way, no problems. new jersey northbound between route 55 and walt whitman bridge, it will take you 5 mirchlts. the same to go southbound. it will creep up in terms of drive times over the next little bit. i'll keep you posted with that. the bridges, the ben, the betsy, the walt all free and clear of any issues. vai? >> happening this weekend, american pharaoh is favored to win the belmont stakes and wrap up the first triple crown since 1978. the horse worked out easy on the track yesterday. now the belmont is a marathon of the triple crown races at a mile and a half long and trainer bob baffert says his horse, he doesn't know that it's that long. >> he doesn't know that he's going to have to go a little extra distance. we're going to surprise him on that one. >> very narrow. focused on getting him up there. put the saddle on him. listen to the song "new york

quarter of 6 and following breaking news. an off duty police officer shot and killed a suspect robber trying to hold up a pizza place in lawndale overnight. a second suspect is still on the run. "nbc 10's" monique braxton is live on the scene. she's gathering information. we'll get a live report coming up at 6:00 a.m. philadelphia mayor michael nutter traveled to washington d.c. talking about improving the transportation system. >> he was joined by senator tom

carper of delaware. they focused on the need to improve the nation's infrastructure. senator carper had just gotten off the amtrak train that crashed. the train was traveling more than 100 miles an hour when it crashed. they found a section of track where the train derailed did not have at least two safety features installed. mayor nutter says amtrak needs support from congress to make improvements. >> still need support from congress. amtrak should not be going every year, hat in hand begging for support and apparently sometimes when they do better financially than projected some in congress want to take those dollars away and use them for something else. >> amtrak serves more than 840,000 commuters every weekday. decision 2016. another republican is in the race. another is almost in. jeb bush tweeted he'll make the formal decision on whether to run for the white house at

miami-dade college on june 15th. he's the former florida governor. former texas governor rick perry is now officially in the race. he's taking a second crack at the white house after an unsuccessful run in 2012. perry says this election will be about leadership. >> this will be a show me don't tell me election where voters look past the rhetoric to the real record. >> perry's attempts to declare a gop candidate. bush is expected to be the 11th. new jersey governor chris christie is still undecided about his entree into the race. >> for the democrats, hillary clinton, bernie sanders, martin o'malley and lincoln chafee are all competing for their party's election. philadelphia inquirer and "new york daily news" recently voted to go on strike. contract talks with the local newspaper gild of america are stalled. the sticking point, health care

and protecting seniority. employees at the company website also approved strike planning. philadelphia media network insists that all three outlets will continue publishing. restaurants and bars in new jersey could face a pricey tab if they're caught swapping top shelf liquors for cheaper brands. state alcohol officials are threatening to suspect the liquor license for any establishment that does that. officials also want to use fines to discourage places from marrying bottles. that's when bartenders combine bottles of the same liquor. investigation found some bars mixing rubbing alcohol with caramel food coloring and passing it off as scotch. subway is dropping artificial ingredients. they're removing artificial flavors, colors and preservatives from the menu. the change will cover many items including meat topping and

sauces. it will take time but will be concluded in 2017. we have new video of a volcano in indonesia that's now silent two days after people in the area were at the highest level of alert. the 8500 foot mountain has erupted on and off for the past year and a half or so. people in the area evacuated as a precaution. this volcano's located on what's known as the ring of fire. take a look at this video. today people in two colorado towns will be repairing the damage left behind by a pair of tornadoes. this is video taken when one of those tornadoes touched down last night. at least three homes were destroyed and another dozen damaged. no reports of any injuries. now your "nbc 10" first alert weather with meteorologist brittney shipp. >> good morning. we are seeing light showers moving into the area plus cloudy skies expected heading into the afternoon. mild conditions for today warming into the low 70s. warmer conditions for the

weekend but i'm also tracking storms again. i'll show you that in the seven day forecast. look outside right now. cloudy skies for philadelphia. we are still seeing light rain at the airport. seeing on and off showers at the philadelphia international airport. our temperatures at 56 degrees. wind gusts up to about 20 miles per hour. kind of a dreary start to the morning depending on where you are. mostly cloudy skies for reading, atlantic city in the mid 50s. mostly cloudy conditions. not raining everywhere. these are really isolated showers that are moving through parts of the area. 57 in allentown, 54 in pottstown, 56 in millville. 57 degrees in dillber. starting to warm back to average. warm into the low 70s. yesterday we were at 70 degrees. as we push into saturday the start of the weekend, 80 degrees. 78 by sunday and the average for this time of year is right at 80 degrees. we're also checking out decreased visibility closer to millville and atlantic city.

two miles. careful traveling in those areas. also be careful traveling where you're seeing light showers here near the northern parts of burlington county and also just to the south of wilmington. so probably a few slick roads out there. we want you to be careful as you're riding into work. we'll continue to see the light showers as we head into the rest of the morning hours but by the afternoon we'll see more clearing, even the mix of sun and clouds and mild conditions for it. saturday, 80 degrees. 78 on sunday and then take a look at next week. storms and temperatures push back into the mid 80s, even the 90s. just before 6:00. you look at jersey as i do you have a morning flight at philly international, you'll be interested on the majors. >> yes. including 95 and we just got word of an accident. philadelphia and southbound into the airport as you said vai. this is a look at our camera. it's not catching the accident. the accident is south of us. this is all of the backup. really turning into a parking lot on this stretch between two exits, allegheny and girard on 95 southbound. northbound you're fine. just if you're headed south, be prepared to wait for a while. i've been looking at the drive times, picking up by the minute. new jersey transit riders northeast corridor trains are experiencing up to a 30 minute delay between trenton and new york. be aware of that. vai. thank you, katy. investigators are trying to figure out how a cannonball ended up in someone's backyard. what police are saying about the old time ammunition and how they're tracking just where it came from. plus, this is what nightmares are made of. that's a snake in the toilet. what animal control workers are saying about the boa constrictor that turned up in a woman's bathroom.

a group of mothers is not backing down against violence. a group known as mothers in charge will attend a congressional hearing in washington today on whether

murder should be labeled as a public health epidemic. we spoke to dorothy johnson speitz who lost her son to gun violence in 2001. >> what we want to see with homicides is programs that will address anger management conflict resolution, better educational programs mentoring programs for youth at risk. tomorrow they will hold an antiviolence rally at the lincoln memorial. a discussion on civil rights is planned in wilmington today. civil rights icon and georgia representative john lewis will join delaware lawmakers at the baby grand theater. they'll talk about issues including the recent events in baltimore, new york city and ferguson missouri. "nbc 10" was in blackwood yesterday meanwhile for the camden county police academy graduation ceremony. nearly 70 recruits completed a six-month training program. they'll begin serving on police forces throughout south jersey including the delaware river port authority.

"nbc 10" and nbc universal are giving away free money to local nonprofits. it's a project called 21st century solutions. the goal is to support nonprofits implementing new programs. it's free $50,000. go to the deadline to apply is july 3rd. with catelyn jenner's debut this week transgender is getting extra attention. philadelphia hosted the first ever transgender flag raising ceremony yesterday. it took place at the annual trans health conference in center city. the event offers workshops focusing on health and well-being of transgender people. earlier this week catelyn jenner introduced herself in the new issue of vanity fair magazine. she used to be known as bruce jenner. 1976 olympic decathlon champion. a replica of an historic french tall ship that sailed from france to america in the 1700s is making its way to philadelphia. the hermione was among the

french ships that blocked support to british troops during the battle of yorktown. the ship left france in april. it will be part of a 12-city tour arriving at penns landing on june 25th. it will be in town available for public tours for four days. take a look at what someone found in their backyard in north jersey. that is a rusty cannonball that was found in madison, morris county. after the homeowner called police they called in the bomb squad as a precaution. they turned the cannonball over to the army for analysis. this surely isn't something anyone wants to see in person. a montana woman says she has no idea how that snake got inside her toilet. the woman made the discovery monday night and quickly called animal control who confirmed the snake was a 20 inch boa constrictor. she's contacting officials to see whether the snake slithered up her drainage pipes.

it is expected to be an absolute gorgeous day heading into the weekend. let's git right to first alert meteorologist brittney shipp. don't disappoint. >> i'm not going to disappoint you. the weekend forecast is even better than today. low 70s. cloudy areas seeing light rainfall rainfall. in the afternoon a mix of clouds and temperatures climbing heading into the weekend. currently at 57 degrees in allentown, 56 in trenton, 56 in atlantic city and 57 in wild wood. millville at 56. here's a closer look at the scattered showers. mainly confined near chester and just to the north of west thetford and also moving into morristown at this time. to the northern corner of burlington county. we do expect the rainfall to clear up heading into your late morning hours. by 11:00 a.m. 63 degrees. by 2:00 p.m. 69. today's temperatures will range between 71 and 74 degrees. mostly cloudy
