ñííó breaking news we're following is in west philadelphia. a water main break floods cars and forces families to evacuate their neighborhood. we're live with an update. run over and left for dead. a south philadelphia woman is in the hospital and the search is on for the driver who hit her and took off. we'll talk about the key piece of evidence in the investigation. it is going to be a dry and warm sunday as we take a live look down the shore at cape may. great beach day. by the evening some thunderstorms could pop up this is nbc 10 news today. i'm rosemary connors. michelle grossman has the

forecast. sounds like an umbrella will come in handy this week. >> we're doing good right now. warm now. temperatures in the 70s. a live look outside. looking hazy. temperatures are rising quick limit we'll be near 90 this afternoon. another hot day, right now it's 75 in allentown. 77 in lancaster. 78 in philadelphia. 78 in dover. 73 in wildwood. 79 in atlantic city. we had a few showers earlier heavy downpours in central and northern delaware. they have cleared out. we had showers along the beaches. we'll see showers and storms this evening into the overnight hours. by lunch time still dry. mostly cloudy 83. 3:00, a chance for scattered storms, 85. up to 87 by 5:00 p.m. we'll talk about the threat for storms today and also severe weather possible on monday. we'll talk about that coming up. now back to that breaking

news. a water main break flooded a neighborhood in west philadelphia this morning damaging cars and forcing residents from their homes. here's what we know right now. at least 14 people cannot return to their houses. the american red cross has set up an evacuation shelter for those people at west philadelphia high school. this from septa, bus route 52 is being detoured around the scene on 52nd street between wyalusing and westminster avenues. nbc 10's jesse gary is live at scene this morning with an update from crews out there. jesse? >> a lot louder out here that's because the gas department is cutting into the street. they want to check their equipment and their system to make sure the broken water main did not affect their equipment. so that's what they're doing now in the foreground. in the background they're bringing in tow trucks to start removing some of those cars. one of them has the back end almost completely in the air. it's fallen down into the street. all the damage is apparent now

that the water has receded. the water department says a cast iron water main broke around 4:30 this morning sending more than 12 million gallons of water into the streets. >> the transmission mains are sometimes more vulnerable to large volumes of water being used. so it could be different stresses on the main. >> the stresses led to a complete failure this morning. water shot from the ground into the air, rushed over parked cars on 52nd street. 14 residents were evacuated from their homes. some reporting ankle deep water in the basement. a temporary red cross shelter has been set up at west philadelphia high school for those displaced and residents left unaffected are worried by the second major break in recent years to impact this area. >> how many more are we going to have in a lifetime? this is much. this is much to deal with.

>> reporter: back live in west philadelphia. they're cutting down into the street. that's the philadelphia gas works checking their equipment and behind them in the background that's the water department assessing and trying to figure out how to get these cars pulled out of the street which has collapsed a little bit due to all of the flooding action. we'll update you on this work coming up in 30 minutes. live in west philadelphia jesse gary nbc 10 news. >> thank you, jesse. philadelphia police are trying to track down the person who shot and killed a man in kensington. authorities say the man in his late 20s was shot four times on thayer street around 3:15 this morning. police have no motive in the case. philly police are investigating a hit and run that left a woman fighting for her life. investigators are hoping that surveillance video will show exactly what happened to the 63-year-old victim as she crossed oregon avenue at 9th street in south philadelphia.

the woman is in critical condition. police are looking for a red four-door ford focus with a pennsylvania license plate of jnl dominguezjn jnl 7292. police have a person of interest in the hit and run. that person lives in chester, delaware county. that's where they're focusing their search. five workers went to the hospital after a chemical spill inside parlor restaurant in ardmore's suburban square. the fire chief tells us the workers were cleaning up around 11:00 last night when two chemicals mixed together and created fumes. the employees reported feeling sick and went to lankenau hospital to get checked out. the restaurant was cleaned and declared safe for business. this morning we are working to an update on a young girl who was pulled from a pond in newark delaware last night. police found the girl in a retention pond at the newark country club around 7:00.

they say she wandered away from a party at the george wilson center on new london road. it's unclear how long she was under the water. the girl about four years old, wandered past the fence and into the pond. fire officials tell us she was unconscious when she arrived at the emergency room at christiana hospital. as we get that update we will pass it along. seven people including a firefighter are recovering this morning after being hurt in an apartment fire in montgomery county. the blaze broke out on an upper floor of a building at the towers at wyncote on limekiln pike yesterday. more than 100 volunteer firefighters battled the apartment fire. we spoke to one resident falicia rauls, who grabbed her dog and ran down 12 flights of

stairs to safety. >> opening the 11th floor door, not knowing the fire is there, it's pure blackness a firefighter came up he was like evacuate the building, it's an actual fire. get out now. he was so serious it was scary. >> firefighters found this dog at scene, he needed oxygen. neighbors suspect the flames came from a grease fire. the fire marshal is still investigating the cause. let's head down to somers point atlantic county where a car went into the front of this house last night. the fire chief tells us the driver lost control hitting the house on fifth street. nobody was hurt. it's unclear if the driver will face any charges. today marks 100 days until the world meeting of families in philadelphia.

two escaped killers in upstate new york. prosecutors are right now working to put together pieces of the plan that led up to last friday's prison break. according to those prosecutors, richard matt and david sweat's alleged accomplice was not only going to be the getaway driver she was planning on running away with them. prison worker joyce mitchell bailed on the initial plan and plan b. also fell through. while the nine-day manhunt has turned up no real leads, investigators are believe the two espies are still in the area. police are expanding their search to a wood region by that prison and going door to door in nearby neighborhoods. when you go to a wedding, you expect dinner a dancing, not your life to be in danger. that's what happened at the waldorf astoria hotel after gunfire erupted during a reception reception.

five people are recovering from an accidental shoot duringingduring ing a reception at the famed waldorf

astoria hotel. someone was playing with the gun when it went off. a woman was grazed in the head. police arrested the man who handled the gun. investigators have still not located the weapon. a new report details the investigation into last november's shooting by cleveland police of a 12-year-old who was holding a toy gun. according to investigators in this case the boy who loaned the pellet gun to tamir rice on that day said to be careful because it looked real. authorities said the police officers frank garmback and tim loehmann issued a warning before shooting and killing rice in a cleveland park. according to the new report no witnesses heard that warning. at least eight people are dead and zoo animals are on the loose because of flooding in the nation of georgia. lions, tigers pigs other animals escaped when rushing

waters destroyed zoo enclosures. the power of social media worked swiftly for one delaware girl. 13-year-old victoria marsh had one wish -- to meet taylor swift. thanks to help from the dover police department, her dream came true at swift's concert at the linc last night. her dream started with #swiftawish. the teen has down's syndrome and osteosarcoma which is a form of bone cancer. dover police officers who are known to be social media savvy helped victoria produce this video to reach out to taylor swift fans to help victoria meet the star and it worked. some other interesting news out of the taylor swift concert. this couple love s taylor swift so much that they decided to declare their love outside her concert this weekend. according to philly.com katie harris and chris iseman had planned to marry on swift's birthday, december 13th of last year but had to postpone the wedding. they thought, well, we're going

weather-wise. starting off sunny and warm. we could end up stormy and wet. good morning, i'm rosemary connors. welcome back to nbc 10 news today. it's 9:30 on this sunday. meteorologist michelle grossman is watching the weekend weather for us and also keeping an eye on the clouds out there now. >> that's right. we have that summer-like recipe where we could see a storm later on and any of those storms could be gusty. we are seeing some sunshine which could help spark the storms later this afternoon. a mix of clouds and sun in philadelphia. it's a warm one already. a front will move through, that could trigger some of those storms. right now 78 degrees in philadelphia. 77 in lancaster. 75 in allentown. 78 already in dover, delaware. 79 at the tick city airport. 75 in wildwood. we had some showers earlier we have a front that is stationed to the south of philadelphia so we had some pretty heavy downpours in parts of delaware, also extreme southern new jersey. they have cleared out.

we have showers back to the west and we anticipate showers later today. by noon, gridry, cloudy 83. by 5:00 some of those showers and some thunderstorms back to the west. those will eventually move into the lehigh valley. we'll talk more about those showers and storms and the potential for severe weather on monday. finally relief midweek. that's coming up. back to the breaking news in west philadelphia. more than a dozen people are out of their houses this morning because of a water main break. take a look. this is video from earlier this morning. you can see that water rushing downstreet. this happened on 52nd between wyalusing and westminster street. jesse gary is there live.

>> reporter: you can see the tow truck grabbing that mazda out right now, the one that's of interest is the one with the back end sticking up in the air. that car is resting on a gas line a pgw gas line. they want to try to get it removed as quickly as possible so they can continue to check infrastructure to see if there's damage. a 36-inch cast iron water transmission main failed this morning at 4:30 sending water rushing into the air over parked quar cars on 52nd street. one of those cars belongs to leah simpson who came into town for a graduation. here nissan was swallowed by floodwater. >> my trunk opened, i have family pictures in there. all of that is gone. >> reporter: adding to her troubles, she doesn't know how

hospital. this morning, philadelphia police are still trying to sort out what happened at the scene of a deadly standoff in kensington. this was the scene before a s.w.a.t. team made its way inside of a home on emerald street. neighbors who heard gunshots called police. when officered arrived, a man who barricaded himself inside the row home started shooting at police. neighbors evacuated. eventually the gunfire stopped. that's when the s.w.a.t. team went in. a police robot found two men dead inside the house. officers tell us they held their fire during the standoff. >> it's an easy call for us. we have clear policies on that, and they're for a reason. i believe a lot of lives were saved that day because of that. again, i was thankful there were no other lives lost. >> investigators tell us they found a gun inside of that house. they're trying to determine if one of the men who died was their suspect, an ex-con considered armed and dangerous.

new this morning, philadelphia is now part of a nationwide campaign to promote a better understanding of islam. we want to show you two of the 11 billboards now up in the city. the islamic circle of north america is hoping the messages encourage dialogue on the truth about islam and the prophet muhammad. the billboards invite people with questions to call a toll-free number or visit a website. the campaign comes before the start of the islamic holy month of ramadan which begins on wednesday at sunset. the annual islamic heritage festival had folks on their feet yesterday. nbc 10 was at the great plaza for the event which featured live music, games, speakers, and a health and wellness fair, plus an open market bazaar. ♪ now to decision 2016, closing the income gap was one of hillary clinton's promises during the first major campaign

rally of her second run for the white house. clinton held the rally on new york's roosevelt island yesterday. her family joined her there. the former secretary of state told thousands of supporters at the event it's time for struggling americans to move ahead. clinton is running against three other candidates for the democratic presidential nomination. on the republican side the crowded field of candidates is expected to grow this week. former florida governor jeb bush is said to officially announce tomorrow he's running for president. bush wrapped up a three-nation tour in europe yesterday. so far ten candidates have declared they are seeking the republican presidential nomination. another republican who could soon announce a presidential run is new jersey governor chris christie. in state business christie's proposed budget has a clear path to approval. last week the state supreme court ruled that the governor can skip extra payments into the pension system for public workers. critics say that the current

that's an indication of where we will go this afternoon. temperatures will climb to near 90 agrees by later this afternoon. quiet for now on radar. a few showers, even a few gusty downpours in delaware. right now all quiet on radar. most of those showers back to the west. we will see this light up later this afternoon and evening hours, showers moving through, the possibility for gusty thunderstorms. today, 85 to 88. topping out around 87 in philadelphia. some spots will touch 88 89 degrees. scattered showers, scattered thunderstorms and gusty winds. we will talk about that the possibility for severe weather on monday and clearing it out on went. we'll talk about that and look at your seven-day coming up. in south jersey, a gloucester county man has pleaded guilty to stealing more than $600,000 in a fake textbook scheme. robert armstrong of franklinville admitted to sending fake invoices to

thousands of schools across the country for math and language books that didn't exist. prosecutors say almost 1,000 schools sent armstrong money. even know they had not ordered anything from him. armstrong agreed to serve 3 1/2 years in prison and to pay back the money he was given. a london newspaper is reporting that great britain is pulling secret agents out of certain countries because of security leaks from edward snowden. britain made the move after russia and china cracked secret documents leaked by snowden that could help identify british and u.s. spies. the u.s. wants the former contractor to stand trial in america. snowed has been living in moscow since russia granted him asylum in 2013. this civil rights leader in spokane, washington is expected to answer questions tomorrow about her racial background and whether she lied about it rachel dolezal is the leader of the naacp in spokane. she came under fire after her

parents who are white, revealed she has falsely portrayed herself as african-american. dolezal sent a message to her members saying she would address the situation at a meeting tomorrow. in the meantime the national naacp has spoken out saying that the organization supports dolezal and that any of itsers can come from any background. let's head to florida where a paramedic fired from his job and is now fating charges after a pushed a hospice patient off of a stretcher. this new video of the incident was just released recently. the incident happened back in february. police say the paramedic got into an argument with the patient, told the patient to get off the stretcher. the patient who says he was disoriented at the time explains what happened next. >> he was screaming, telling me to get off, then he lifted up the whole side and turned it over on top of me. >> the paramedic was charged with inflicting injury by negligence. he will go before a judge at the

end of july. this morning we have new information about an outbreak of middle east respiratory syndrome or mers in south korea. health officials have reported seven new cases bringing the total to 145. the outbreak was traced to a businessman who returned from a trip from the middle east. he visited several health centers, all of the cases are linked to those facilities. 14 people have died. now to cuba where the opening of a u.s. embassy is imminent. u.s. senator jeff blake from arizona met with cuba's foreign minister yesterday and said the embassy should open soon. the senator was part of a group looking at restoring relations between the u.s. and cuba. the time is 9:44. a possible setback for the 76ers. find out why it will take longer for this sixer to put his best foot forward.

of a fallen colleague. the friendly competition at chestnut hill college yesterday was in honor of philadelphia's sergeant robert wilson iii who was killed in the line of duty earlier this year. sergeant wilson went into a gamestop store in north philadelphia on march 5th to buy a gift for his son's birthday when two brothers tried to rob the place. wilson died after the shootout. the suspects are due in court later at the end of this month. nbc 10 news today continues in a few moments. no water is what some families in west philadelphia are dealing with this morning. nbc 10's jesse gary is live at scene with the latest on the water main break. jesse? >> right now they are trying to determine if there's a problem to the gas service because of the water main break. you see that car with the back end resting up in the air? that's resting on a gas line.
