today, showers and storms will be back. good morning, welcome to nbc 10 news today. i'm rosemary connors. >> and i'm vai sikahema. it is a little bit warmer. it will get warmer and i guess we'll get spotty rain here in philadelphia. you can see the sun coming up behind us. let's get right to bill henley with his first alert forecast this morning. >> we're starting to see clouds move through the area to start with. they're not going to be here all day. it will be in the 80s this afternoon, low 80s yesterday. there's a mostly cloudy view now. those clouds arriving in just the last few hours. with these first clouds no sign of wet weather. they're helping to keep temperatures warmer this morning. it's 65 in northeast philadelphia. wilmington is 69 degrees and 62 in trenton. the temperatures turn around as the clouds thin out as the day goes on. that's a mostly cloudy view from the comcast center. cloudy skies and 70 degrees at 7:00. clouds around at 10:00. at 1:00, the warmup into the middle 80s. still climbing at that hour.
we'll be watching that for shower and thunderstorm development, especially farther to the north and west with the lehigh valley. we'll go through the future weather hour by hour when i come back in ten minutes to show you when the storms are likely to move in. heading out the door jessica boyington is watching your traffic. >> we'll do a quick check on new jersey roads. we're going through a work zone on 295, right around the black horse pike. you can see not actually active at this point but we are seeing some lane restrictions pretty much on the shoulder. everything is moving by just fine. and a 12-minute drive time from 38 up towards this point at the black horse pike. no real problems there. elsewhere, we're still seeing a ramp closure due to last week's storm. downed wires blocking the exit ramp for exit 17 right around harmony road in greenwich township. out in chestnut hill germantown avenue is being closed in both directions east and westbound between bellsville road and
northwestern avenue. stay stenton avenue to get around that. breaking news in philadelphia's west oak lane neighborhood this morning, a pregnant woman is clinging to life after she was shot on thouron avenue just after 10:00 last night. her unborn baby did not survive. the woman was rushed to instein medical center in extremely critical condition. the second victim believed to be the baby's father, is also being treated there. police are searching for the gunman. we continue to follow breaking news out of indonesia. this is video from the residential neighborhood where an indonesian air force plane crash. this happened two minutes after takeoff. we have just learned the control tower called for the plane to return to the airport after takeoff because of engine trouble. 20 people are dead, many more are injured. we'll continue to follow this breaking news and bring you updates as soon as we get them. more breaking news this comes to us from afghanistan. within the past 15 minutes or so, there was an explosion at a
busy shopping center in the nation's capital. police say the attack was targeting a military convoy driving by. ambulances are on the way to that scene right now. we don't know how many people are hurt in this incident. we'll bring that to you as soon as we find out. at 5:33 happening today new jersey governor chris christie is expected to announce his run at the white house. nbc 10's katy zachry is live for us at the statehouse in trenton with more on what the governor has planned today. katy, he graduated from high school 35 years ago. he's still close to some of his high school buddies. i think that will be part of his announcement. >> he's chosen his high school gym, livingston high school in north jersey at the place where he'll make this big announcement around 11:00. political analysts we talked to say his burden for the presidency is no surprise. if you recall he's made several trips to new hampshire lately. that's where the country's first primary is held. christie joins an already crowded field, one in which 13
other republican candidates are running for president. political experts tell us timing is everything right now. and timing is not on christie's side. they say his popularity peaked between 2011 and 2013 after his favorable response to hurricane sandy and his passing of a budget with bipartisan support here in a heavily democratic state. >> really since the scandal with the bridge bridgegate his standing has gone down considerably and the economy in new jersey whether or not it's his fault, he's the man at the top of the ship. >> so how do people here in new jersey feel about their governor running for president? well, we'll share with you mixed emotions cominging up at 6:30. reporting live katy zachry nbc 10 news outside the statehouse in trenton. >> matt lauer will have the first interview following his campaign announcement. you can watch the interview right here on "nbc nightly news"
at 6:30 this evening and then tomorrow morning on the "today" show. the gop field of presidential candidates is getting crowded. christie will become.14th republican to run for the white house. just four democrats have thrown their hats in the ring so far hillary clinton, bernie sanders, martin o'malley and lincoln chafee. count on nbc 10 to follow the growing field of candidates and the race for the white house. including the donald trump controversy. ahead at 5:45 what nbc's decision to dump trump means for primetime tv. a delaware county man has been cleared of the most serious charge against him after being accused of causing a crash that killed a teenager. a jury acquitted jonathan vanderhorst of homicide by vehicle but did find him guilty of dui. the crash happened last year in clifton heights and killed 18-year-old dante desimone. he was a 2013 graduate of upper
darby high school an a freshman lacrosse player at newman university. the man who got that a physical confrontation with the septa police officer while holding his daughter is telling his side of the story. it was a story you first heard on nbc 10. ellis smith paid a full fare before getting on the market-frankford line with his 18-month-old daughter. but septa officers say he squeezed his way past the turnstile and did not pay the fare. >> he was willing to be cited right there on the train if that's what the officer wanted. i'm not sure exactly what was zbong on going on in the officer's mind but he felt it necessary to grab him by the throat and push him against wall of the septa train. >> he subpoenaed the septa video showing what happened before the confrontation. an internal investigation is under way. texting on the turnpike. a passenger sees a bus driver using his cell phone behind the
wheel and starts recording him. this morning, nbc 10 uncovers safety concerns that go well beyond this one trip. and how long were you without electricity after last week's storms? thousands still are. what you need to know to make sure you're not paying for power when the lights go out. 5:37. 67 degrees. we're tracking some clouds in the area. that's a live view from the pocono mountains where we're already seeing showers this morning.
now your nbc 10 first alert weather with meteorologist bill henley. 5:39. a cloudy start and a warmer one, too, up 3 degrees compared to yesterday. 65 degrees in philadelphia. lots of clouds, no sign of any showers just yet. we're already tracking them in central pennsylvania. light scattered showers but there are some thunderstorms in southwestern pennsylvania.
that's a possibility. go into the afternoon hours. 10:00 this morning, 79 degrees in philadelphia. you can still see mostly cloudy skies. a spotty shower in the lehigh valley is possible at that hour. more likely we'll get stronger storms as we head into the noontime hour, reading and lancaster heading towards allentown and doylestown that's 3:00 in the afternoon. a spotty shower in south jersey and delaware. the heavy weather is more likely to stay farther to the north. allentown could see heavy weather at 6:00 this evening. there's just a chance of a shower in the philadelphia area. showers and thunderstorms into the pocono mountains, keeping temperatures in the low 70s today. 79 for reading. high of 83 for allentown and quakertown, into the 80s for doylestown, trenton and mt. holly. the shore should stay dry with sunshine, 81 in rehoboth 85 in vineland. we'll be watching for scattered showers and thunderstorms this
afternoon. should stay dry in drexel hill and swedesboro this morning. the weekend forecast with the seven-day when i come back in ten minutes. 20 minutes before 6:00. there was an accident overnight in chestnut hill. i believe there's an investigation there now. otherwise it's been pretty good. >> let's get an update from jessica boyington. what's happening out there? >> we're checking on the schuylkill expressway. not a whole lot of volume. we're still doing okay around south street. everything is moving along so far for the morning. the schuylkill expressway eastbound from the blue route up towards the vine street expressway, about a 12-minute trip there. 95 southbound, no problems into the center city area. the blue route is doing okay as well. belmont avenue is being blocked in both directions north and southbound out in philadelphia. right around montgomery drive due to a downed tree. your alternate is to take belmont mansion drive. from the campaign trail to
the courtroom, the latest twist following donald trump's controversial comments on immigration. this morning we've got trump's response to the network after getting the news that he's dumped. and the phillies make a big change at the top. hear from the phil's new president and what it means for the future of the team.
a tour bus driver is off the job after an nbc 10 viewer caught him texting and driving over the weekend. they board saturday morning, saying the driver was texting just after crossing over the ben franklin bridge. we looked into yep tours and found 25 driving violations within the past few years. the owner says that's a portion of the total trips. >> we've done about 36,000 trips in the past two years. 20 violations is a small number. the owner says some of his buses have cameras and some don't. he also says he's installing more cameras to prevent incidents like this. today president obama will host brazil's first woman president at the white house.
she arrived yesterday, spending part of her first day touring the mlk memorial with president obama. on the agenda, discussions about science and technology as well as energy. first lady michelle obama will have dozens of fourth graders on the south lawn. it's part of the campaign, let's move outside. this morning, donald trump is threatening to sue nbc after the broadcast company cut ties with him over his controversial comments about mexican immigrants. yesterday nbc yooufrl announced it is dropping trump. that means they will no longer air the miss usa and miss universe pageants. last week, univision said it was cancelling its cover of the pageants.
nbc was already looking for any host of "the apprentice" because of trump's presidential bid. >> i'll be suing univision, maybe i'll be suing nbc, too. we'll have to see. >> the network issued a statement about dropping trump which reads in part at nbc, respect and dignity for all people are cornerstones of our valued." two events will give the community a chance to learn how to help our veterans. the first one is part of veterans affair summer of service. woodland avenue in university city in philadelphia, is hosting an open house running from 3:00 to 6:00 this evening. residents, community and corporate organizations are invited to learn how it better serve our vets through volunteering communities projects and job opportunities. the other event is at the
coatsville veterans affair medical center. that runs from 10:00 to 2:00 this afternoon. don't count on the annual re-enactment of the battle of gettysburg during the upcoming holiday weekend. the reason? rain and flooding. it's usually held on farm fields over the forth of july weekend. because of heavy rain last thursday and friday the fields are swamped. the reenakment will take place on the weekend of august 7th. meantime it's been nearly a week since the severe storms ripped through our area. still without power this morning. so if you lost power, what are you owed? well, we made calls to every local utility company in the region. and peco doesn't offer any kind of inconvenience credit but allows customers to file a claim on its website. >> pse&g is in the same boat. if you have a concern, call customer support. meantime, ac electric and delmarva power tell us they are still working to restore power.
if you tiltutility crews have not been to your house, it may be that they're unaware you don't have electricity. you may want to give them a call. >> showers and storms on the way. it's kind of hard to tell as we look live at center city philadelphia this morning. we're all keeping our fingers crossed that it doesn't rise to the level of last week's problem. >> i don't think it will be widespread as what we saw last week. there is a possibility of severe storms. i think they'll avoid those areas that were hardest hit last week. we are seeing sunshine but there are still clouds around. the temperatures have been slowly falling. it is in the 60s, 67 in philadelphia. at philadelphia international, it's 68. the humidity and it will be a little bit higher but the real humidity is going to be heading our way for tomorrow and later this week. this is a live view from camelback in the pocono mountains. it is dry at this hour. we're already spotting scattered showers in the mountains. there you can see the clouds rolling through philadelphia.
they are thicker to the west. these bright white clouds those are the scattered showers mainly light showers moving through williamsport into central pennsylvania. but there are storms that are active this morning in southwestern pennsylvania. those are moving towards interstate 99 at this hour. those storms mostly will head off to the northeast. but during the afternoon hours we could see some strong storms developing with developing winds and possibly even hail. it's likely the storms will avoid south jersey and central and southern delaware but pennsylvania especially the western suburbs, allentown, reading and lancaster are more development. this morning though, it will be dry. 69 degrees at 7:00. still clouds around at 10:00. at 1:00 this afternoon, we'll be in the 80s. we'll be watching for showers and thunderstorms. that threat will be with us into tomorrow morning. but the decreasing threat during the day on wednesday, 87 wednesday. still a chance of showers and
thunderstorms for thursday and friday with high temperatures in the 80s. turning warmer this weekend, and it now looks like it will be dry for the fourth of july. how about that? clouds, sunshine 87 for the fourth, even warmer sunday and monday with sunshine into the upper 80s. the wet weather that we know is coming our way shouldn't be a problem for drivers this morning, of course. >> yes i see on the camera a disabled vehicle on the side of the road. jessica boyington fill us in. >> we're checking out the schuylkill expressway right now where we have a disabled vehicle pushed on to the right-hand shoulder two vehicles involved. no police activity. not a lot of volume squeezing by on the eastbound side around the conshohocken curve. something to watch out for. it's not setting anybody back too far for the morning. 95 throughout delaware you're doing just fine there as well. about a ten-minute trip in either direction. if you're headed north or southbound from 295 up toward 495. we're still watching this accident investigation scene on chestnut hill in germantown
avenue. it's closed tewell bellsville avenue and northwestern avenue. take stenton avenue to get around it. in delaware the quest for a college degree is about to become more attainable for 150 low income residents. a philanthropist is donating $3 million. the money will be used to put those 150 residents through the university of delaware. the donation comes from robert carr and his give something back foundation. carr by the way, is a co-founder of a credit card processing company based in princeton, new jersey. philadelphia phillies are looking to the future with a new team president as we look live at citizens bank park where the phillies lost to the brewers last night, 7-4, as they continue their four-game series.brewers. the move comes -- for the new president comes three days after
manager ryan sandburg just stepped down. long-time baseball executive andy macphail will take over as president at the end of the season. the phils introduced macphail yesterday. for now he'll shadow pat gillick for the next three months. he'll eventually run all baseball operations. >> andy is a rare combination of both old school experience and new-age thinking. >> i think my three main functions will be to read to watch and to listen. and then hopefully within three months i'll have a clear idea of what i think is appropriate and needs to be done. >> macphail won two world series as general manager of the twins in 1987 and 1991. he also served as president of the cubs and the orioles. we wish him luck. preparing for pope francis. >> we'll tell you what the hispanic community is doing to welcome the first ever latin pope to our area. plus an artist's effort to

francis how invested latinos will be are in this visit. >> the pope will visit philadelphia as part of the world meeting of families which begins in 84 days less than three months from now. world renowned artist meg salman was in center city yesterday collecting pieces for her project from folks in dilworth plaza. people were encouraged to write down their struggles or somebody else's on a strip of cloth. hundreds of thousands of pieces of cloth from all over the world will be tied into knots on the installation. the week-long event for the world meeting of families start september 22nd. pope francis will arrive in philadelphia on the 276th and6th and the papal mass will be held on the 27th. >> the real issues we've been
