apartment building. a 5-year-old taken from her home, beaten, raped and left in the bushes. now police are saying a 15-year-old is to blame. this morning we're hearing from the 5-year-old's mother. and steamy is the word of the day as we take a steamy look through our camera here at boathouse row on the schuylkill river. already 73 degrees. you'll feel the humidity when you step out the door. meteorologist bill henley is standing by with more on that. good morning and welcome to nbc 10 news today. i'm chris cato. >> i'm tracy davidson. it is 5:00 a.m. and already 73 degrees outside. let's get an update with meteorologist bill henley. bill? >> as some people are already experiencing warmer temperatures this morning than yesterday, up by five degrees in pottstown. pottstown has seen an isolated shower to start with. most of the rest of the area is completely dry and warm and muggy. 74 in philadelphia, 69 right now in wrightstown. roxborough is in the low 70s. northeast philadelphia at the airport 74 degrees along with south philadelphia. it's going to be another quick warmup.
then 81 degrees at 10:00, near 90 and climbing at 1:00 this afternoon. neighborhood by neighborhood forecast when i'm back in ten minutes. right now, a check of your first alert traffic with katy zachry. >> thanks, bill. skies are clear and roads are clear for the most part other than some of the overnight construction, we typically see that should be clearing around this hour if you're in new jersey, around the 6:00 hour. things are running smoothly on the area roadways. a live look if you're traveling on 95 southbound near girard avenue. 13 minutes it will take you to go woodhaven road to the vine street expressway. northbound a few minutes less than that. your 59 drive times if you're in new jersey on 95 between 295 anç 495, ten minutes in both directions. we have really good drive times across the ambassador right now. delaware memorial bridge, right around this time, the overnight construction, painting and repairing of the towers should be lifting. i wanted to remind you.
sometimes they're not exactly on schedule. if you're headed over the delaware memorial bridge, expect lane closures associated with that work. mass transit at this hour is running on or close to schedule. guys. >> 5:02. we continue to follow this breaking news into the nbc 10 newsroom. police in wilmington are investigating after a child was shot. it happened a short time ago on townsend place. officers are on the scene. nbc 10's jesse gary son way. he's making phone calls. he'll have a live report as soon as he gets there. chris? new from overnight, nine people need a new place to stay this morning after fire swept through an apartment building in the somerton section of philadelphia. that fire broke out in the laundry room. the alarms got them out of bed say the people who lived there. >> we've had the alarm go off and it be a false alarm. this time it was a real fire. >> our laundry room was cooking this time.
>> yes. >> i don't know, we probably lost everything. >> they also said that they went door to door, knocking on their neighbors' doors to get them out of their apartments. a man in his 60s was taken to frankford-torresdale hospital for smoke inhalation. police are reviewing surveillance video, they say shows an overnight shooting in north philadelphia that left a man in critical condition. police have not released a video but they say the motive appears to be robbery. it shows the gunman shooting the victim in the stomach an west hazard street. he searches the man's pockets. it's not clear if the shooter got away with anything. also from overnight, someone shot a man in the face in the nicetown section of philadelphia. a man was shot on priscilla street, ran to a business for help. he's in stable condition. police have not made an arrest or commented on what led to the shooting. now to a shocking arrest in
north philadelphia. police say a 15-year-old boy is the person who abducted a 5-year-old girl from her home, assaulted her and left her unconscious in a pile of brush. >> this is unbelievable. only an animal would do this type of thing. >> the girl's mother told us over the phone, she's relieved police made an arrest. this he have not released the name of the 15-year-old. he's accused of breaking into the girl's home last month, carrying her out of the house and beating and sexually assaulting her. he's charged with a long list of crimes, including attempted murder and rape. the d.a. will decide whether to try him as an adult. 5:04 now. citizens rallied in trenton last night, calling for justice in the case of a 14-year-old boy who was shot seven times by police. the attorney general's office is leading the investigation in this shooting. on august 7th, a state trooper and mercer county sheriff's officer responded to a report of
shots fired in trenton. according to investigators, the teen ran from officers. witnesses say he reached for his waistband and the officers fired. police say they found a handgun on the street later, but the boy's family says the gun did not belong to him. >> only reason it's not getting national attention is because he didn't die. it was a 14-year-old kid shot seven times by a cop. >> thatç teen was released fro the hospital last friday. he faces extensive rehabilitation. neighbors in the overbrook park section of philadelphia say they're worried about an increase in violent crime in that area. dozens showed up for a monthly meeting with police captains of that district. last thursday, a young man was shot in the head at the counter of a water ice shop in overbrook park. earlier this month, the owner of a kosher bakery was shot. one of the captains recently featured in a magazine article
tried to reassure residents and said detectives have good leads in both cases. 5:06. 73 degrees. happening today, activist groups from all over philadelphia will come together to march through a neighborhood plagued by violence. the 2015 peace tour involved 11 different groups who have the same goal, uniting communities and coming up with solutions to violent crime. tonight at 6:00, those groups march through southwest philadelphia starting at the corner of 58th street and greenway avenue. happening today, a survivor of the mass shooting at virginia tech university is sharing her story at a washington township high school in gloucester county. part of the school's annual safety and security conference. christina anderson was shot three times when a gunman opened fire in 2007 at virginia tech. 32 people died. anderson will take the stage this morning. the event is free and open to the public. >> drivers wanted for these vehicles. delaware is dealing with a shortage of school bus drivers. a new report says bus companies are having trouble finding qualified drivers as the new school year approaches.
one contractor said the hiring process can be tough because of the job requirements. the state requires a commercial driver's license, background checks and drug testing, a physical exam and hours of learning and training. leaders of several delaware county school districts are scheduled to call on state legislators today to pass a budget before the start of the school year. they scheduled a news conference for this morning in lansdowne to send that message. they want lawmakers to approve a budget that includes more than $400 million in new education funding. they've been without a budget since july 1st. it's been more than 48 days. social service agencies in pennsylvania are asking governor tom wolf and lawmakers to interrupt the budget stalemate and provide stop gap aid. the president of the united way of pennsylvania says a number of agencies that provide food, shelter and other assistance to the needy are already cutting services, many of them expect to scale back services or borrow money this month.
>> now your nbc 10 first alert weather with meteorologist bill henley. >> eight minutes after 5:00. here we go, again, another afternoon into the 90s. 94 yesterday. it won't be as hot as it was yesterday this afternoon. but this morning, we're very close to yesterday's level. 74 degrees, the wind is calm. humidity 85%. you'll feel it first thing this morning. we're tracking an isolated shower. saw a few thunderstorms pop up yesterday afternoon. the shower is in the process of dying out, right along the turnpike seeing a few rain drops, into pottstown, light rainfall. that will not last much longer. then we have sunshine. you can see just a few scattered clouds in the area. thicker clouds to the west. that's where we're finding showers and thunderstorms. they're trying to move into the area. they'll run into high pressure. that will keep shower and thunderstorm activity in western and central pennsylvania this afternoon. your hour by hour future weather shows that for most of the day we'll be looking at sunshine and dry but humid conditions.
8:00 this morning, no sign of any showers or thunderstorms. we'll be [n the clear, lots of sunshine, at 11:00. well into the 80s at that hour. then into the 90s this afternoon. the shower threat, you can see stays to the west during the day today. over the next couple days, there's a better chance that those storms will be moving into the area. so your neighborhood by neighborhood forecast, calling for another hot one for allentown, reading, quakertown, low 90s this afternoon. you'll see bright, sunny skies for norristown, trenton, mount holly, hazy sunshine with humidity. at the shore, upper 80s for cape may right on the beach inland. it will be in the low 90s for the airport. 85 and atlantic city and 83 for rehoboth. wilmington, swedesboro, philadelphia, all into the 90s this afternoon. seven-day forecast with cooler and some rainy weather ahead. that's when i'm back in ten minutes. >> all right, bill, always something to watch out for
there. nine minutes after 5:00. >> what you need to watch out for, nbc 10 first alert traffic reporter katy zachry has that. >> fortunately a lot of the overnight construction scenes in place in the overnight hours are clearing. that's good news. the lehigh valley, to start things off, 78 at cedar crest boulevard. 78 free and clear of any accidents, 22, 309 looking great. if you're taking the northeast extension up to the lehigh valley, much of those overnight construction scenes are clearing. also along 476 there was about five-mile stretch of construction between st st. david's. that has cleared. from 95 to 74, 15 minutes. if you're headed across the delaware memorial bridge, expect lane closures until 5:00 a.m., sometimes the crews don't adhere so strictly to the time frame. expect delay and closures if you're crossing over the bridge. >> 5:10 right now.

that seminary. >> yes. nbc 10 is helping you prepare for the pope's visit to philadelphia. there's a business resource center that opened on monday. one business has already decided to close, philadelphia zoo tells us that it will shut down on saturday and sunday during the pope's visit. but it will be open on friday, the day before the pope comes to town. a lot of people are sleeping over there during the weekend that the pope is there. >> that's true. >> we want to take a closer look at what the pope will see during his trip to philadelphia. >> nbc 10's vai sikahema gives us a driving tour of what the pope will see. >> reporter: saint charles borromeo is the beautiful property on the main line where pope francis will stay when in philadelphia. it is gated. you can expect round the clock security during the time the pope is here. >> in terms of all the popes, i think he's particularly focused
on a lot of important issues. i'm excited personally that he's going to be here. >> reporter: from his quarters, the pope will commute like the rest of us, except, well, he's not like the rest of us. he's not only a religious leader, he's also a head of state. his motorcade will have a police escort, his own security detail and members of the secret service. the pope's itinerary includes historical sites at independenco mall. he'll visit prisoners and staff at a correctional facility and the ben franklin parkway where he'll celebrate mass at the art museum. his first stop upon arrival in philadelphia is the cathedral basilica of saints peter & paul. for security reasons, the vatican isn't releasing the specific route the pope is taking from the airport to center city. however, if you're playing out of philadelphia international saturday or sunday evening, the 26th and 27th, it
might be wise not only to leave early but have a couple alternate routes. for some, they are thrilled that the pope is coming. >> it's important for the people of the use. >> yes, it is, especially here in philadelphia. >> others not so much. >> i think we have other things to worry about than the pope. sorry, pope. >> reporter: in center city, vai sikahema, nbc 10. and a man we met in the pope's homeland is making the trip to philadelphia. >> he's hoping for a face-to-face meet with the pontiff. nbc 10 was the first local news operation to put reporters on the ground in argentina. patricio lynch took jim rosenfeld into one of of the areas he works. he will travel to philadelphia for the pope's visit with a group of orphans from honduras. he's hoping they can somehow meet pope francis but even if it doesn't happen, patricio said he can't wait to hear the pope's

we will see aç southerly direction develop during the day. that's still bringing humid air into the area and you'll feel it through the day. including right now. 74 degrees in reading. plenty of sunshine to warm temperatures into the 90s in philadelphia. it's in the clear in wilmington. the ballpark it's dry right now and warm. it's going to get hot this afternoon. by game time this evening, the phillies, the blue jays, the temperatures will be coming down. it will still be warm and muggy, 85 degrees at game time. later in the game, muggy conditions, 85 degrees. not a lot cooler with southerly winds at 10 miles an hour, keeping the mugginess in place. saw an isolated showers. it's pretty much fizzled. there was a quick downpour. it's moved towards pottstown, the rain drops are quickly disappearing. the thunderstorms to the west, making pro guess moving towards the east during the day. a slight chance of isolated
shower this afternoon. over the next couple days we'll have additional chances for showers and thunderstorms. it will be more likely we'll get storms later in the week. but today, hazy sunshine. the heat wave continues, back into the 90s this afternoon. low 90s today with the high humidity. will feel like it's in the middle 90s. not as hot tomorrow. 87 with more clouds around an a chance we'll see scattered showers during the day. on wednesday, a much better chance today. here comes widespread rainfall, later thursday and into friday to keep the temperatures even lower in the afternoon. middle 80s for thursday and friday. then we're in the clear for saturday and sunday. not bad, the temperatures will lower in the morning. that's a sign of lower humidity for saturday and sunday, up to 87 with partly sunny skies sunday afternoon. warmer on monday with a chance of scattered showers and thunderstorms. >> maybe thinking about the nhl ice will cool you off a bit. he was a fan favorite during his
time in philadelphia. danny briere is returning to this area to hang his skates. he spent six years in the orange and black. he played in colorado last season but briere says he'll spend his retirement living in south jersey, raising his three boys. he helped lead the flyers to the stanley cup finals five years ago. he's set to hold a retirement press conference at the fly years skate zone in voorhees this morning. you can watch that at 11:00 a.m. on comcast sports net. well, first it was t-mobile, then verizon, now another major cell carrier is cutting the cord with the two-year contracts. does this mean a good deal for you? we'll take a look. fighting back, a robber met with resistance by a customer. but that customer was carrying something that may have made the situation worse. we'll explain. and nbc 10 on the scene this morning, breaking news in wilmington where we've learned that a child was shot. this is happening at an apartment complex there.
