warmer weather is ofç the way. right now, 64 degrees. with a breeze you can see there. 5:30, welcome back to nbc 10 news today. i'm tracy davidson. >> i'm chris cato. meteorologist bill henley is standing by with your first alert forecast. we've been on a real roll with the weather lately. >> it will continue today. if you enjoyed the last few days, i think you'll like it today as well. we're less than an hour away from unsunrise. at this hour, clear skies, the temperatures have really cooled off. 40s for the pocono mountains, trenton 55 degrees, mount holly at 55 and seeing 50s in delaware as well. 61 in northeast philadelphia. clearer skies with the view from center city. that view will see plenty of sunshine. temperatures warm from the 60s at 7:00 to 74 degrees at 10:00 this morning. north, northeasterly winds at 0 miles an hour will be with us
this afternoon as we just make it into the 80s. we'll go neighborhood by neighborhood when i'm back in ten minutes. first, let's go to jessica boyington and your first alert traffic. the schuylkill expressway is still doing great so far on this friday morning. these are our cameras on top of the schuylkill expressway right around the vine street expressway. so 13 minutes in total eastbound from the blue route up towards this point right near the vine, average speed 58 miles per hour. traffic is moving along nicely, headed toward the vine street expressway there, no problems. as you head out the door, academy road, northeast philadelphia is dealing with an accident side between comly road and red lion road. you can take knights road to get by that. it runs parallel to the scene. you'll be just fine heading out the door there. in montgomery county and cheltenham, watching out for this accident scene at east
glenn sooiside avenue and north avenue.ç ten minutes from 295 to 495. police are on the hunt for a man wanted in a carjacking and kidnapping. he left a major clue behind. nbc 10's katy zachry is has been following the investigation. she's live in south philadelphia. katy, what happened? >> reporter: tracy, there were a lot of twists and turns to what happened this morning in south philadelphia. fortunately, police were there to witness most of it. and they believe they know who they're looking for. they say the man who was driving this black mustang is a former prison inmate. they say this because they found what's believed to be his prison i.d. in the car that he stole. now, initially police pulled over that car because he was driving erratically. when officers walked up to it, he took off. they followed in their patrol
car, only to see the guy crash the mustang several blocks away. he then carjacked a nearby vehicle who had people in it. the officers couldn't stop it because they were too far away. they saw him force the braver and a passenger out of the car and then he drove off. however, two women were in the back seat of that car. the suspect eventually pulled over and ran away. police are still looking for him. >> now there will be additional charges of kidnapping. after carjacking the vehicle he took off with two females in the back seat. >> reporter: now, police have not released the name of that former prison inmate who they're looking for but they say he's stands about 5'8". last seen wearing a white shirt and he has dred locs. the four people who are victims are at south detectives being questioned. they have positively i.d.'d the perpetrator in their carjacking as the same person pictured in that prison i.d.
as soon as the police release the name of the man they're looking for we'll bring it to you. earlier this week we told you about crimes near drexel. since saturday, someone broke into five homes in powelltown village, taking electronics, backpacks and jewelry. drexel students rent those homes. last night police made an arrest. a jewelry heist caught on camera and we have the video. surveillance cameras captured these two burglars breaking into trent jewelers, hamilton, mercer county. they hit up the display cases swiping thousands of dollars worth of jewelry. anyone with information is asked to call police. a local restaurant is holding a fund-raiser. >> the proceeds will help the family of a philadelphia police

5:44. the fate of a new hampshire prep school drought is now in the hands of a jury. closing arguments wrapped up yesterday in the case of 19-year-old owen labrie accused of raping a 15-year-old freshman girl two days before he graduated st. paul's school last year. they both testified they agreed to meet for a tradition called the seniorç salute which is a sexual conquest contest. the girl says it went too far and she was forced to have sex against her will. labrie says there was no intercourse. he's pleaded not guilty. a close flayover by a drone prompted two cape may county football teams to stop in the middle of their game. the remote control drone buzzed
back and forth over a field where ocean city high was hosting middletown. the referees stopped play, delaying the game for about 20 minutes. by the time police arrived, the drone was gone an offers say even if it had been there, there's little they could do about it. a mather labor union is urging fellow members to boycott atlantic city casinos that are own or about to be owned by carl icahn. the afl-cio is calling for the boycott. icahn said the union-run health plan is unaffordable and excessive. meantime, distracted by free drinks and sexy servers. that is the defense of a poker player who he and the borgata are suing each other over his winnings. the atlantic city casino claims that phil ivy and a friend cheated the borgata out of nearly $10 million.

baltimore will demolish a cvs store that was looted and torched in april during the protests and rioting following the death of freddie gray. cvs says the store will be completely rebuilt and re-opened by the end of the year. it has been ten years since hurricane katrina ravaged new orleans. today president george w. bush and his wife laura are heading there. they will visit a school that benefitted from the gulf coast school library recovery initiative. it's a special fund of the laura bush foundation for america'sly braers. hurricane katrina was the most devastating storm in our country's history, according to fema. for survivors it's a week of mixed emotions remembering the devastation and those lost, while staying focused on how far they've come and how the recovery tens. as many as 60,000 homes still need to be rebill or repaired. we are tracking tropical storm erika. that storm is hitting puerto
rico right now. yesterday, at least four people died in severe flooding and mud slides on the caribbean island of dominika. 20 people are still reported missing. erika is protected to hit the bahamas, the u.s. virgin islands and st. martin. the storm is forecast to hit florida as a tropical storm next week. now your nbc 10 first alert weather with meteorologist bill henley. >> 11 minutes before 6:00. look at this view from center city. this is the view from the comcast -- towards the comcast center. not a cloud in that sky. we're in twilight right now. sun coming up at 6:25 this morning. atlantic city in the clear, 57 degrees. mount pocono is reporting scattered clouds, 48 degrees. you'd be hard pressed to see them from this view. this is from the french manor in the pocono mountains. after a chilly start this morning, we'll see temperatures in the low 70s in the mountains. few scattered clouds, we're
about to see those move into philadelphia. they've been moving through berks county and into montgomery and chester county. no rain with those clouds. it's a different story for tropical storm erika. heavy rain. fortunately it is south of puerto rico. they're getting some rain in the san juan area. the heaviest part of that storm is just to the south. that's good news. it's moving to the west/northwest at 17 miles an hour. it's now expected to stay a tropical storm. by early saturday morning, less than 24 hours from now, it will be clearing the dominican republic and haiti and then heading toward the bahamas, staying to the south of the baum bahamas, that's not necessarily a good thing. the stronger part of the storm is the north side of the storm. it will pass just to the north of cuba. early monday morning impacting south florida. for us, sunshine and low humidity. 80s this afternoon, justç like the last couple days. almost a carbon copy.

there is one thing apparently that can slow down usain bolt, the world's fastest man. a cameraman on a segui. he lost control and slammed into bolt during the world championships in beijing. both men are okay. scary there, though. speaking of scary, major league baseball con soon be taking new steps to protect fans from flying bats and balls. those dangers sent several fans to the hospital this season a report said that the phillies were going ahead with plans to install more protective netting at citizens bank park. the baseball commissioner denied that. he said research on added netting is still being done right now. >> our goal is to put the commissioner's office in a position where we can make a complete recommendation to ownership in november and give

gorgeous. if you like the last two days, you'll like today, too. welcome to nbc 10 news today. i'm chris cato. >> i'm tracy davidson. let's find out the weather ahead with meteorologist bill henley. bill? >> 25 minutes away from sunrise. we are tracking a few clouds. you can now see them just behind center city, just to the west of the city. glow of sunlight and twilight for the buildings. those clouds move through just like the last few days. we've been tracking them through the reading area, into upper chester, montgomery county and into philadelphia. that's one patch of clouds. those will move through and we're back to sunshine today and it will be bright sunshine through the day. look at that, barely a cloud in this view, looking towards center city here at the nbc 10 studios. you can start to see some of the scattered clouds. mainly sunshine today, 66 degrees at 8:00. by 11:00, 76 degrees and into the low 80s at 2:00 this afternoon. we'll go through the forecast neighborhood by neighborhood to show you which areas will not reach the 80s later today.
