right now on nbc 10 news, the search is on for a robber who stabbed a business owner more than 20 times. we'll walk you through what happened and the clue police have that could help them solve the crime. there's a shortage of fire and ems personnel across pennsylvania. one local county is launching a recruitment effort. and a foggy start in some parts of our area. be alert if you head out this morning, also, grab your umbrella. we could be dealing with rain on the way home today. good morning, it's 4:00 a.m., this is "nbc 10 news today." let's get right to bill henley with the first alert forecast for this friday. bill? >> happy friday. it is a little bit foggy, as you mentioned, tracy, just a couple

of spots showing up. right now in bucks county and the trenton area. trenton, the visibility is down to 1/2 mile. it's not going to be an all-day affair. we're in the 50s and 60s, again, like yesterday. in fact, wilmington's running warmer this morning at 61 degrees. atlantic city is 61 while it's 58 with the fog in trenton. the clouds will break, we will see some sunshine, any fog disappears, then later today, that's when the showers will roll in. 62 degrees at 6:00, by 9:00, a little bit of a southerly breeze. bringing in a bit of additional humidity. 66, and the winds will pick up at noontime, and that additional humidity will help to fuel late-day showers and thunderstorms. we'll go through the forecast hour by hour with the future cast when i'm back in 10 minutes. right now, though, a friday morning traffic scene. jessica? >> and bill, yeah, we're on 95 to start, around gerard avenue. the southbound lane dealing with ongoing construction. you can see a sign blocking off the right-hand shoulder.

traffic still moving by. no real problems there from woodhaven road to the vine street expressway. but also, watch out for 95 northbound the off-ramp is closed around gerard avenue. scheduled to open a little bit later this morning. we'll have updates for you then. but if you're on the boulevard right now, northeast philadelphia. north and southbound, the inner drive is closed between ron street and woodward street. that'll be out there until about 5:30. and we'll keep you updated. yesterday, they cleaned up early. as for mass transit, no problems or delays so far this morning. new tonight, a man is in the hospital after he was stabbed with what police describe as a large knife or a sword. nbc 10 was on the scene on juniper drive in cherry hill as police took someone away in handcuffs. police have not said what role that person may have played in the stabbing or if they've been charged with a crime. the victim was stabbed in the hand and expected to be okay. no word yet on a motive. police are searching for a robber who stabbed the owner of

a southwest philadelphia auto tag shop more than 20 times during a violent struggle. surveillance cameras inside the shop on dick's avenue captured a man walking into the store right before 6:00 last night. police say the robber was inside the shop for only about two minutes, but it was enough time for him to rob and repeatedly stab the owner. the owner managed to call 911. police say the robber locked the door and ran away. so police had to kick it in. >> i know the people here and this guy's been here for many years. >> police are already reviewing video, which shows the robber. police also say, the timing of the crime right before the owner was closing up for the night with no accident. they think the suspect knew exactly what he was doing. happening today, first ever recruitment drive to fill a need for volunteer firefighters and ems personnel. nbc 10 joins us live with a look at how serious this shortage is. katy, tell us more.

>> hi. well, one of the chiefs in delaware county says it best. there is a, quote, urgent need for volunteers. to put it in perspective, the number of volunteer firefighters in pennsylvania over the last few decades has dropped from hundreds of thousands to just tens of thousands. now, here in delaware county, they are hosting a recruitment drive today and tomorrow throughout the county, stations will be opening the fire house doors. they want to attract anyone who may be interested in volunteer fire fighting. they want them to learn more about what it takes. the need for volunteers is not specific for to delaware county. we stopped by the fire department in montgomery county in preparation for this story. and coming up in the next half hour, we'll talk about the approach that department, the abington fire department is taking for their recruitment effort. reporting live in delaware county this morning, katy zachary, nbc 10 news. >> thanks. a group of volunteers is working to restore a delaware county park destroyed by vandals. the head of the youth football

program described the scene at black rock park in ridley township as discouraging. vandals broke lights, ripped down a rain spout and damaged the roof of the shed and destroyed the dugouts. >> there's limited resources. and when you have to spend those resources to repair things that were in fine shape to begin with, it's just frustrating for the families. >> police hope someone may have seen what happened and be able to help them catch the vandals. a new clue has emerged in connection with the murder of a mercer county woman. police are looking for a black f-150 similar to the one on your screen. jessica's body was found tuesday morning. police are not saying how she died. the truck in question has new jersey plates l-44eru. >> i should have walked away. as the trial gets closer to wrapping up. on the stand yesterday was one man who has admitted playing part in the deadly accident.

shawn benshop. he's already pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter. he took a deal that will give him 10 to 20 years in prison. he was the heavy machine operator at 22nd and market. six people were killed when a four-story brick wall fell on to the thrift store 2 years ago. he testified against this man, griffin campbell facing murder charges. it was his construction company that was in charge of the demolition. he's facing life in prison if found guilty. benschop said he knew the wall was dangerous. he told jurors, when i saw a building like that, i should have walked away. i had my family to feed and i had bills to pay. police say a deadly home invasion last month was an act of revenge. authorities arrested desmond smith and ali. they say ali wanted revenge after his ex-girlfriend refused

to take him back. the two shot and killed the ex-girlfriend's father. the 18-year-old was home at the time, she was able to hide with her infant son. investigators say what ali told her is proof that this was an act of vengeance. >> he told her he wanted another chance. she refused. he told her, if we can't be together, someone's got to go. >> ali and smith are now charged with second-degree murder. today marks 101 days of the state of pennsylvania being without a budget. and local students say they're paying the price. >> students from several schools across philadelphia walked out of class yesterday and protested the budget stalemate. they say pennsylvania lawmakers should not allow education to take a backseat to bipartisan bickering. >> playing the politics game and

we're the pawns, and i think it needs to come to a stop. >> students calling the end of the stalemate they say is destroying their education. coming up at 4:30, the new measures to raise funds in this budget fight. eight minutes after 4:00. 60 degrees right now. a warm start. it's going to be a big warm-up this afternoon. and that will take care of any fog around this morning. some areas of fog starting to thicken up. i'm tracking showers for later today, showers and thunderstorms will sweep through the area, but they'll be clearing for the weekend. in fact, typical fall weekend is ahead. right now, 55 degrees in mt. pocono. there you can see the fog. now 61 degrees. clear at the shore for cape may. showers will hold off into the evening hours for the shore. but they will be sweeping through the cape may area, as well. as far as fog is concerned. doylestown, 1/2 mile visibility, down to 1/2 mile also in trenton

and thoms river. clouds scattered in the area. they're going to come into play. we'll get some breaks of sunshine and a big warm-up before this rolls in this afternoon. the chance of some showers and thunderstorms. hour by hour, future cast shows that 2:00 this afternoon, look at that line of showers. and also, look at the temperatures peaking in the low 80s. that line is on the move pushing through philadelphia and heading into delaware and south jersey. those heavier showers in atlantic city by 6:00 this evening. could see another line of showers come through the philadelphia area. those will also be fast movers. by 8:00, just about all of the activity is offshore. by 10:00, the showers are done. the wind changes direction. and the temperatures start to come down heading into the weekend. but today, the numbers will be going up. look at this 78 degrees for allentown, redding, 76 in quakertown. late day showers and

the driver has been fired. a city agreed to pay a settlement in the case of an unarmed african-american man shot to death by a white police officer earlier this year. >> officer michael slager shot and killed scott during a traffic stop back in april. scott was running from the officer at the time. a bystander recorded the shooting with cell phone. he was indicted on a murder charge in june. he's being held without bond. it is the biggest question in washington this morning. who will be the next speaker of the house? an election to fill the position was postponed yesterday after a surprise move from the man expected to win the job. nbc 10 is live in our digital operations center this morning with more on why kevin mccarthy withdrew and who the new front-runner is. >> washington still buzzing over this. just hours after mccarthy made his final pitch to replace john boehner as house speaker. the california republican stunned colleagues leaving some

in tears by pulling out of the race. now, mccarthy was facing fierce opposition and told his colleagues he wasn't the right person for the job. >> i think it shocked some of you, huh? we're serving. we should put this conference first. and i think there's something to be said for us to unite. probably need a fresh face. >> threatens congress' ability to meet a series of critical deadlines with the country nearing default on the debts and a potential government shutdown looming if a budget deal is not struck. now, john boehner announced last month he'd step down in october. but he was scheduled to appear on the "tonight show" last night but he canceled at the last moment. so now what, you ask? well, boehner has agreed to stay until an election is held in the coming weeks. one potential speaker who republicans could rally around is possibly paul ryan.

the "washington post" reports that he is boehner's choice. but his aides insisting he's not interested in the job. we'll continue to follow the developments on capitol hill and bring you any updates as we get them. live, nbc 10. >> thanks, vai. 4:16. the airman hailed as a hero for stopping a french train attack is recovering after being stabbed in his hometown. spencer stone in serious condition with three stab wounds. police say alcohol fueled the fight and they're looking for two men that took off in a car. prosecutors have accused a doctor of sexually assaulting children. he turned himself in this week. police say he molested a 5-year-old girl and a 10-year-old boy for the last four years. prosecutors say the assaults did not happen while he was working

as a doctor. >> the decision to charge was made based on the statements of the child. and from what i was told, the children are very credible. and are able to relay what happened to them. >> we're just looking forward to our day in court. our hope is that notwithstanding the type of charge this is that everybody will keep an open mind. my client claims he is innocent of these charges. >> the doctor has been out on bail. he says he's not been practicing because of the pending charges. one minute could mean the difference between life and death. and now a new report in public safety revealed paramedics take too long to get to patients in need of medical attention. the national average is eight minutes. but camden county residents are waiting longer, at least 50% of the time. here's a breakdown of city by city. if you live in pine hill, you're most likely going to have to wait more than eight minutes for a first responder.

in winslow township, took more than 8 minutes 77% of the time. cherry hill, 59% of patients had to wait. a camden county freeholder says the delays are astounding adding, quote, how can we say the health and welfare of our residents is being protected when we look at this report? the researchers say every year more than 300,000 americans die from sudden cardiac arrest for every minute those patients go without treatment, there's a 5% to 10% decrease in survival. an update now to a story that you saw first on 10. a nurse has surrendered her license after using a dirty syringe to give dozens of flu shots. happened during a clinic at a pharmaceutical company. investigators say the nurse changed the needles between each patient but used the same syringe on 67 workers. they're all being tested for hiv and hepatitis. new jersey's health department says the nurse is barred from practicing pending a further

ruling from the board of nursing. happening today, you can get a free flu shot in delaware. every october, the health department there gives out free flu shots at the new castle county farmer's market. starts at 10:00, runs through 3:00. >> 19 minutes after 4:00 this morning, we're watching for some areas of fog. not everybody's going to see it this morning. the fog will disappear as we see a big warm-up ahead today. for now, no sign of any fog looking across the delaware. nice clear view from the adventure aquarium. we will see sunshine to warm us from 60 degrees up 20 this afternoon. looking for high temperature of 80 degrees. that humidity is running higher this morning. the number will come down some this afternoon, but the higher humidity will help fuel some showers and thunderstorms. all eyes on south philadelphia on sunday. by then, things are shaping up,

nicer weekend ahead. right now, 60 in philadelphia. some 50s, but no sign of the 40s for most of the area. the one spot dropped down to the 40s is thoms river. in the upper 50s. we're starting to see some fog. in this area. might be some fog in central bucks county around doylestown, light fog, as well, less fog for quakertown. fog disappears, but the clouds, they'll be on the increase after we see some sunshine this morning and early this afternoon. later in the afternoon, this line of clouds, showers, and possibly thunderstorms rolls through the area. we could see some pretty good rainfall come through, 1/3 inch is possible in philadelphia. more than 1/2 inch possible at the shore. so p.m. showers, afternoon, late afternoon showers and thunderstorms. before they get here, the temperatures climb. upper 70s and low 80s. and that does not last for the weekend. the temperatures will come down behind the showers. clearing skies on saturday, 66

lasalle university. the catholic college will install its first ever layperson and woman as president to serve the school since its inception more than 150 years ago. will welcome dr. colleen henich. the university's 29th president. investigators in burlington county are trying to identify a couple caught on camera using counterfeit cash. take a good look at these pictures. this was on september 19th. investigators say these two used fake $100 bills at the walmart. if you recognize them, call police. general motors is recalling nearly 32,000 suvs because the windshield wipers could catch fire. the recall is for the 2016 buick enclaves, chevy traverses and gmc acadias. well, you seem to be paying more to binge watch your

>> after early morning fog in some parts in our region, we'll find out what's ahead for your weekend. right now, 60 degrees at 4:30. this is "nbc 10 news today." i'm tracy davidson. >> and apparently changes on the way. we're anxious to what that is. and perhaps one of those changes. bill? >> yeah, today is the day of change. the last few days have been beautiful with temperatures in the 70s this afternoon. we're going to see 80 degrees. and this morning, we're starting with some areas of fog. thicker fog than what we've seen the last couple of mornings. visibility down 1/2 mile in trenton. the temperatures, 50s and 60s for most of the area. atlantic city, philadelphia and wilmington in the low 60s. dover now 61 degrees. 50s for most of the rest of the area. and a big warm-up today. we'll start in the low 60s. at 6:00. by 9:00, some breaks in the cloud cover and a southerly wind at 9 miles an hour. the southerly wind does two things for us. brings additional humidity a
