conditions at trenton, 3/4 mile visibility there. right now, it is 61 in philadelphia. trenton with a light fog. it's 58 degrees. 60s in delaware, and south jersey. on our way to 80 degrees this afternoon. it's going to be a fairly quick warm-up at 6:00 this morning, 61 degrees, winds start to pick up during the morning hours. 69, that's going to help boost our temperatures into the middle 70s by lunchtime. and that sunshine later today will fade as showers and thunderstorms sweep through the area. we'll go through it neighborhood by neighborhood with the forecast when i'm back in ten minutes. right now, jessica boyington watching your friday first alert traffic. >> we have construction clearing up out of the way out in new jersey. right on the atlantic city expressway, westbound, that left lane was closed. crews cleaning up early. no problems heading out the door on the a.c. expressway, but if you're out in philadelphia, we have a water main break you can

see south and 5th in here. that's the intersection. we do not have a lot of volume in the city area right now. you'll be fine heading through the area. as for the vine street expressway, currently no problems there. check in with those drive times. we're completely under 5 minutes heading westbound or eastbound. this is around 8th street. no problems headed eastbound on 95. westbound to the schuylkill or 30th street station. the rest of our drive times are doing great, as well. if you're heading on 95 and the schuylkill expressway and the blue route southbound from the schuylkill to 95 is only a 15-minute trip. what police describe as a large knife or perhaps a sword. nbc 10 on the scene on juniper drive in cherry hill as police took someone away in handcuffs. they have not said what role this person may have played in the stabbing or if he's been charged at all with any crime.

no word yet on a motive. another stabbing, this one in southwest philly. someone robbed and stabbed an auto shop owner 20 times. police say the robber went into the shop about 5 minutes before closing time last night, and in a matter of two minutes, police say he robbed and repeatedly stabbed the owner. on top of that, he locked th that -- the owner managed to call 911. john walker says police had to kick in the door to save his life. >> living in this community myself, i know the people here. >> police are already reviewing video which shows the robber. police also say the timing of the crime right before the owner was closing up for the night was no accident. they think the suspect knew exactly what he was doing. >> it's 5:02. i should have walked away. that testimony from one of the men charged in the center city building collapse as the trial

gets closer to wrapping up. on the stand yesterday was the one man who has admitted playing a part in the deadly accident. benschop took a deal that will give him 10 to 20 years in prison. he was the heavy machine operator working on the demolition at the collapse site. six people were killed and more than a dozen hurt when a brick wall fell on to a salvation army thrift store two years ago. he testified against this man, campbell. his construction company was in charge of the demolition. he's facing up to life in prison if he's found guilty. police say a deadly home invasion in montgomery county last month was an act of revenge. authorities arrested smith and ali yesterday. they say ali wanted revenge after his ex-girlfriend refused to take him back. investigators say the two shot and killed the ex-girlfriend's father, kevin brown inside his lower moreland township home. his ex-girlfriend was able to hide with her infant son.

investigators say what ali told her is proof that this was an act of vengeance. >> he told her she wanted another chance. she refused. he told her, if we can't be together, someone's got to go. >> ali and smith are now charged with second-degree murder. an emergency room doctor in the lehigh valley is charged with sexually assaulting two children. the doctor turned himself in this week. police say he has been molesting a 5-year-old girl and a 10-year-old boy for the last four years. prosecutors say the assault did not happen while he was working as a doctor. >> the decision to charge was made based on the statements of the child. and from what i was told, the children are very credible and them. >> we're looking forward to our day in court. our hope is that notwithstanding the type of charge this is that everybody will keep an open mind.

>> my client claims he is innocent of these charges. >> the doctor is free on bail. he's not been practicing medicine because of these pending charges. today marks 101 days the state of pennsylvania has been operating without a budget. and local students say they're paying the price. >> students from several schools across philadelphia walked out of class yesterday in protest of the budget stalemate. they say lawmakers should not allow education to take a backseat to bipartisan bickering. >> they're playing the politics game and we're the pawns and it needs to come to a stop. >> students are calling for a solution to end the stalemate. they say is destroying their education. delaware county is in desperate need for volunteer firefighters and ems workers. county officials have put out the call for their own rescue. nbc 10 joins us live with a look

at how this recruitment drive will work. ka katy? >> reporter: the fire chief says it best. there's a, quote, urgent need for volunteers. to put it in perspective, the number of state volunteers throughout pennsylvania over the last few decades has dropped from about 300,000 to just 50,000. here, this fire station in delaware county, it will open its doors today and tomorrow to show off the inside. this fire house will do it as will other fire houses do it throughout delaware county. it's the area's first annual recruitment drive. and they want anyone who may be interested in volunteer fire fighting to stop in and learn more about what it entails. now, the biggest need for help is often during the day when volunteers are tied up with their paying jobs. now, this need for volunteers is not specific to delaware county. in preparation for this story, we went to abington, montgomery county to see what they're doing. they're also holding a recruitment drive of sorts, and we'll have more on that coming up in the next half hour. reporting live in delaware

county. katy zachary, nbc 10 news. >> we'll see you then, katy. today is an historic day for lasalle university. the first ever layperson and woman president to serve the school since its inception more than 150 years ago. they will welcome dr. colleen hannich later this afternoon. she is the university's 29th president. >> seven minutes after 5:00, we're just getting started this morning. but it's already a warm start. this afternoon, will be summer-like. 80 degrees this afternoon, a late summer-like weather pattern, which will end with showers and thunderstorms. already tracking that wet weather in northwestern pennsylvania. those will be fast-moving showers. so by the weekend, we've got clearing skies. and the summer-like temperatures, well, they'll be breaking for saturday and sunday. mt. pocono, 57 degrees. a nice warm start for trenton and 58 and it's in the 60s right

now in wilmington. south philadelphia in the clear right now, but during the late afternoon and evening hours, that's when we'll see the showers and thunderstorms roll through. the things are looking good for the temple game on saturday and for the eagles game on sunday. calm for pottstown. look at this, we have a shift in the wind. those are southerly winds. even though they're not very strong right now, they'll be increasing during the day. and the winds do two things. bring in additional humidity and also help to boost our temperatures. and that's what we're see this afternoon. a few clouds right now, but the clouds north and west, those are the rain-producing clouds, those are on track for this afternoon. you'll see them early this afternoon. by mid afternoon, allentown and redding could see showers and thunderstorms. during the early hours of the evening commute, doylestown, then they sweep through trenton and mt. holly. and during the early evening hours, they head for the shore. cape may, 77 degrees, before the storms move in. 77 for rehoboth and 80 for

dover. and plenty of sunshine to begin with, but then the clouds take over and late this afternoon, west chester, wilmington, upper 70s. 80 degrees for philadelphia. those storms roll through. but as i mentioned, they'll be clearing out for the weekend. 66 degrees on saturday, then plenty of sunshine for sunday. and a high of 70 degrees. and looks like things are going to continue into next week. the nice weather, that is. got the 7-day forecast when i'm back in ten minutes. >> okay, bill. 5:09 right now. let's check your ride to work. see you in a second, bill. let's take your ride to work. take a look at 95. >> he's going to drop the microphone and walk off. and jessica's going to tell us what's happening on 95. >> exactly. yeah, we had some ongoing construction right now on 95 to watch out for. a lot of these projects aren't active today but they have their cones and signs out around the area. this is right around the blue route. you can see we're watching out for that right-hand shoulder. but it's still fine southbound

the blue route. city, watch out, 19 street south and the ben franklin parkway right in here. they do have local detours right now, not a lot of traffic in the city area. you'll be fine heading through. it's just something to watch out for. as for mass transit, currently no problems or delays this morning for patco, d.a.r.t. and septa. breaking news into nbc 10. we've just learned the national dialogue quartet in tunisia won this year's nobel peace prize. cited for the contribution to the building of a pluralistic democracy in tunisia in the wake of a revolution there in 2011. one of the heroes who helped stop an attack on a european train is once again making headlines. this morning, we have surveillance video of a fight that landed that man in the hospital with stab wounds. what started this scuffle.

just about 5:15. we have breaking news, monique braxton arrived on the scene of the water main break. what can you tell us? >> good morning. when we arrived here just before 5:00, we found police tape

blocking the intersection of 5th and south going north to lombard. you can also notice the water is gushing from the pavement. now, we've reached out to the philadelphia water department to find out exactly the size of the break that occurred when it occurred and how many customers in this area are affected. now, as you might imagine, south street is busy, usually most of the day. dozens of businesses in this area also expanding north, dozens of businesses, as you can see, at this intersection. right now, we don't know the cause of the break. and we also don't know exactly what time the water department expects to return here to make repairs. and when everyone else who is without water right now this morning waking up without it. we'll have their water restored. in south philadelphia, monique braxton, nbc 10 news. >> it's 5:14. the airman hailed a hero for stopping a french train attack is recovering this morning after being stabbed in his hometown. airman first class spencer stone in serious condition with three

stab wounds. he was out with friends when a fight spilled out of a bar in sacramento. police say alcohol fueled the fight. they're looking for two men who took off in a car. and back here in our area, take a look at this surveillance video. right here. video of two men wanted for robbing a delivery driver in kensington. the deliveryman says one of the men pulled out a gun along north hancock street last month, demanded his money and wallet. the video shows the men using the credit card at a gas station and a walmart a short time later. both still on the loose. an update to a story you first saw on nbc 10. a nurse surrendered her license after using a dirty syringe to give dozens of flu shots. now, this happened during a clinic at a pharmaceutical company in mercer county. investigators say the nurse changed the needles between each patient but used the same syringe on 67 of the same workers. they're all be tested for hiv and hepatitis. new jersey's health department says the nurse is barred from

practicing pending a further ruling from the bar of nursing. investigators are trying to identify a couple caught on camera using counterfeit cash. take a look at the pictures here. september 19th, investigators say these two used fake $100 bills at the walmart. if you happen to recognize them, you're asked to call police. a city in south carolina agreed to pay a settlement in the case of an unarmed african-american man who was shot to death by a white police officer earlier this year. north charleston will pay $6.5 million to the family of scott. scott was running from the officer at the time. a bystander recorded the shooting with a cell phone. slager was indicted on a murder charge in june. being held without bond. at a time when racial tension in america is running high, voters in memphis, tennessee, elected the city's first white mayor in nearly 1/4

century. jim strickland defeated the incumbent mayor, first elected in 2009. his campaign focused on fighting poverty. his slogan, change is on the horizon. the viewing for a philadelphia civil rights leader is moving to a larger, more prominent location. his viewing was supposed to be at the funeral home on tuesday. instead, it'll be held at bright hope baptist church in north philadelphia. it'll run from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. the celebration of life will be held wednesday at 11:00 a.m. also at bright hope baptist. a long time journalist and community activist died over the weekend at the age of 65. working at the philadelphia enquirer. in 1996, he was elected as the local chapter president of the naacp. he eventually served on the board of the national organization. >> it's 5:17. happening today, you can get a free flu shot in delaware. every october the health department gives out flu shots.

starts at 10:00 this morning. you should see the tents outside the market and you can get your shot. restrooms designated as only for men or only for women could start disappearing in philadelphia. advocates say the change will help protect transgender people from violence. council voted yesterday to require gender neutral bathrooms in the city. the ordinance only applies to single-stall restrooms. mayor nutter is expected to sign the bill into law. meanwhile, general motors is recalling nearly 32,000 suvs because the windshield wipers could catch fire. the recall is for 2016 buick enclaves, chevy traverses and gmc acadias. >> let's check the cars on the road for your ride to work. >> jessica boyington in the traffic center. >> hey. yeah, we are starting off in montgomery county right now. few things going on there. we do have an accident out in

marlborough. also, a road hazard. just be careful up in upper gwyneth and south broad street. if you're out the door on the boulevard, you're in camden, heading into philadelphia, say you're going to be fine around 676. actually, the toll plaza to the ben franklin bridge. heading in that direction. no problem. watch out for ongoing construction on the ben franklin right now. as for the rest of the area bridges, no problems for the walt, the betsy. we'll have more updates and mass transit updates in the next ten minutes. >> 19 minutes after 5:00. it is a bit warmer this morning in some areas, and more humid, too. to make it feel a bit warmer this morning. and a big warm-up ahead for this afternoon. 80 degrees today for philadelphia. we're at 61 right now, the humidity 87%. and a little bit of a breeze.

it's out of the south-southwest. that's an important change from the last couple of days when we had northwesterly winds bringing in that dry air. that south-southwesterly breeze. it will be increasing during the day. sunshine, we'll see it before showers and thunderstorms roll through the area later today. 56 in pottstown. wilmington and millville at 61 degrees. camden is 55 degrees. and most of camden county. a big warm-up. we'll see upper 70s and low 80s this afternoon. the clouds, they're rolling through right now. dry, no showers just yet. but you might want to take your umbrella for this afternoon. that's when all of this will be sweeping through the area. these are fast-moving showers and possibly some thunderstorms for our region. the storms on the move. so early this afternoon, we'll see them sweep through allentown by 4:00 this afternoon. they're in trenton, philadelphia and wilmington. those are some heavy downpours, but it's going to be brief. they're moving so quickly by

7:00 this evening. most of the showers offshore. by later in the evening, we're shower-free. so today, showers and thunderstorms developing late in the day. before they get here, the big warm-up. upper 70s to 80 degrees. summer-like temperatures. like early september. but it's going to feel like fall again this weekend. 52 degrees saturday morning, 66 degrees in the afternoon. the eagles are trying to sneak into saturday and take over lincoln financial field from temple. not going to happen. they'll be playing on sunday. there we go. they're back now. sunday afternoon, looks like good weather ahead for both games for saturday and sunday. monday, plenty of sunshine, too. then a chance we'll see some showers and cooler temperatures for wednesday and thursday and 70 degrees. oh, and you probably thought i almost forgot. >> no. no. >> didn't forget. >> absolutely gorgeous weather for the wine festival. look at that 62 degrees at noon, by 2:00. and 67 with lots of sunshine at 4:00 sunday afternoon.

we are following breaking news for you this morning. a water main break in south philadelphia. we are live on the scene. we'll get you an update. and we'll get you around that. good morning, and welcome to "nbc 10 news today." i'm tracy davidson. >> looks like we've got clouds rolling in maybe a little bit later in the afternoon. maybe need your umbrella with you this morning. let's get to the first alert forecast. hi, bill. >> and it's a good idea late this afternoon, we'll see the showers and thunderstorms. but early this afternoon, they could be headed for allentown in the pocono mountains. we'll get them beforehand. right now, completely dry, even though we do have clouds moving through the area. the temperatures starting off warm for this time of year, we should be about 10 degrees cooler than this. 61 right now in philadelphia, wilmington and millville. dover, just warmed up to 62
