coming up. good morning. welcome to "nbc 10 news today." i'm chris cato. >> i'm tracy davidson. let's find out about the showers when we might see them. meteorologist bill henley in the first alert weather center. >> we start with a few scattered showers along the coast, starting to pull away. the next round of showers we could see them in western pennsylvania, that's a line of just light showers that will be moving through the area around midday. and behind those showers, some cooler weather for tomorrow. the wind will be picking up, too. punxsutawney seeing light raindrops. we'll start with some sunshine, see the temperatures climb from 59 at 7:00 to 66 degrees at 10:00, by 1:00 in the afternoon, we'll be tracking light showers in the area. neighborhood by neighborhood forecast, when i'm back in ten minutes. jessica boyington has first alert traffic. and bill, we are dealing with good news now for the vine street expressway, we had this closed, supposed to be out until 5:00 a.m. starting to see traffic moving through the area. so closed between the schuylkill and broad street east and

westbound and this direction in here, i checked with my cameras and seeing traffic move through so they are starting to lift the closures. watch out for activity and police activity and maintenance vehicles in the way. just in case so you can be careful. for 422, there is construction there as well. right around trooper road, 422 westbound between 23 and trooper road watch for lane restrictions. the off ramp to trooper, the right lane is blocked. we have an eight-minute drive time on the total route 422 from 29, to the schuylkill expressway. when i come back we're going to check in with mass transit. on to a story we brought you as breaking news last night at 11:00. a 14-year-old boy fighting for his life after being shot in the head in north philadelphia last night. katy zachry has been checking on the boy's condition and the investigation this morning. >> reporter: this morning we know the victim is in extremely critical condition at the hospital. when i last spoke to detectives this morning they told me they

are still trying to figure out a motive for the shooting and track down witnesses. here is video from the scene, the victim just 14 years old. he was found lying in the middle of north tenth street around 8:30 last night. right in front of a philadelphia housing authority police building. investigators tell us he was shot once in the forehead. they did find a bb gun wrapped up in his clothes but police believe he was injured by a revolver. >> presently he is inside the nj room being worked on. he has a gun shshot wound to hi forehe forehead. he is in very critical condition. it's unknown whether or not he's going to survive. >> reporter: investigators tell us they found a surveillance video a block from the scene and this morning they are looking at that footage to see if it leaves clues into this shooting. katy zachry, "nbc 10 news." new this morning delaware state police are searching for two suspects they say tried to break into a church in wilmington.

police just released these images of the two suspects. authorities say they used tools to try to get into st. mark's united methodist church on september 20. if you recognize the suspects call police. 5:03. it is sentencing day for the teen driver who left the scene of an accident after hitting a temple student putting her in a coma. 18-year-old rashan roberts had a learner's pernlt at the time. he took off. in july he pleaded guilty to leaving the scene of an accident. rachel hall was a senior lacrosse player at temple at the time. roberts car hit her after she rode her bike through a stop sign. she suffered a serious brain injury and is still recovering at a local rehab center. zbr in ocean county a family dog attacked a 3-year-old causing serious injuries to the child. sky force 10 was over the scene as the toddler was air lifted to cooper medical center in camden. police tells us dog is a mastiff and attacked the child in the

family's home. we're working to find out the child's condition and what will happen to the dog. >> a judge denied bail for the man charged with the murder of a transgender woman in philadelphia. police are looking for three other men they say were involved in the killing of keisha jenkins. police arrested pedro redding on sunday. a tip identified him as a known robber in the neighborhood. redding has four prior arrests for violent crimes. nbc 10 talked with friends of the victim who say they hope justice will be served. >> no matter what community one comes from, what lifestyle, what professions we work, nobody deserves this. >> last week a group of men beat and shot jenkins after she got out of a car. police have ruled out that jenkins' death was a hate crime. they believe robbery was the motive. >> is it's 5:04. happening today a viewing for former philadelphia naacp leader jerry mondesire. he died of a brain aneurysm six

days shy of his 66th birthday. the viewing will be from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at bright hope church. a celebration of life ceremony is scheduled for tomorrow. the burial service is private. today philadelphia's sugar house casino is hosting a job fair. the casino is adding 500 full time positions as a major expansion comes to a close. representatives will meet with job seekers at the pennsylvania convention center from 10 until 2. >> and listen to this, a fight between two football teammates in berks county at a college there landed one of them in the hospital and the other in jail. both were freshmen at albright college. a dispute led marquis stewart to stab demere madison several times with a cork screw. >> problems with the people before previously. and like a lot of like they were like antagonizing him a lot. and that led to that. >> pretty much of an anomaly.

not a place we have these type of incidents that take place, assault with a knife, i've never heard of that at albright. >> madison is in stable condition. stewart has been suspended from the team and is now facing charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. today some of the leading experts in education meet to discuss the challenges facing schools. dr. william hyde is part of the panel. the symposium on education is this morning at episcopal academy. the public is invited. >> mandating school uniforms the topic tonight at the easton area school board meeting after a staff survey showed 90% of staff agreed to consider a uniform policy. most parents support it too. the board is not expected to vote on that today though. temple university's board will vote for bill cosby's

replaceme replacement. he resigned amid sexual assault allegations. the board will vote on the nomination of nbc's tamron hall. the chair of the board called the 1992 temple grad a home run adding she has all of the support she need selected she will be the fourth woman appointed to the board. right before that meeting, students and campus workers are expected to rally at the bell tow tear demand a minimum wage increase. student workers, nurses, food service workers and adjunct professors want the minimum wage at $15 an hour. organizers say students have been requesting a meeting with the president for more than six monthings. seven minutes after 5:00. it's dry now but at some point it's going to change. we're tracking light showers this morning, they are not going to be around all day. by tomorrow they will be gone and temperatures will be turning cooler. but the real chill arrives this weekend. temperatures will be lowering,

in fact, at one point over the weekend it will be cold enough for snow. right now, though, 49 degrees in redding. philadelphia, 60 degrees and 63 right now in cape may. dry in our area. no sign of showers just yet. there were showers at the shore, they have pushed offshore and the next round of showers is moving through western pennsylvania. but it's just light rain. there goes the first round. that's from low pressure passing offshore. this is a cold front, behind it the cooler air. you'll feel that tomorrow. we will get a warm-up ahead of those showers, back in the 70s for parts of the area today. fleetwood, morgantown and pennsburg, a chance of scattered light showers and low 70s for new hope, souderton. we'll break through the clouds enough to warm the shore. warmer than yesterday, 74 in avalon. rehoboth beach and 74 in millville. scattered showers are possible but certainly not all-day

rainfall. and enough sunshine breaking through to warm thorndale, philadelphia, woodstown in the low 70s. the weekend, yes, it will be turning cooler. but no sign of snow. sunshine for sunday. cold start in the morning, 55 degrees. you'll start to feel the chill thanks to a breeze on saturday with a high of 60. and that will not be the end of the cold. the seven-day forecast when i come back. >> you should not be allowed to say that word. >> way too early for that "s" word. nine minutes after 5:00. a check of the morning drive. >> is an accident we're getting word of. where is it? >> we're out in montgomery county in abington so watch out for lane restrictions at meeting house road and devon road. you should be able to get by. not a lot of traffic in the area. 295 in new jersey, right around the black horse pike 40 problems, moving along nicely. that work zone not active now but lane restrictions are in place. southbound from 38 to this point

at the black horse pike at 13 minutes so no real problems there. mass transit we're okay for patco, new jersey transit and dart. up to 30 minutes delays on thorndale's inbound train 514. >> this morning we're following a developing story after two firefighters were killed last night. next we'll tell you what investigators say happened on the scene. a new bride springs into action during a wedding day emergency. we'll explain how her day job put a wrirngle in her reception.

a sad story in kansas city, missouri. investigators there today will continue looking into what caused this apartment fire that killed two firefighters last night. officials say crews were on the scene for about 30 minutes when the building's roof collapsed. again, two firefighters killed, two other crew members hurt. they are still in the hospital. everyone living inside was evacuated before the collapse. >> the red cross is in south carolina giving away cleaning supplies to people affected by last week's historic flooding. yesterday volunteers were busy giving out mops, bleach, anything else residents can use to get their properties back to normal. south carolina governor nikki haley said it's time to start recovering. it will be a long road for many animal shelters now filled with displaced pets. volunteers at one shelter say 20 dogs were brought in there on friday alone and many shelters are still flooded washing out

kennels and forcing indoor cages to be overcrowded. >> since i've been involved with st. francis i can't think of a natural disaster of this proportion. >> before the flooding the national humane society took three dozen animals at the shelters to better facilities in a different city. 5:14 now. happening today two local members of congress will call for justice for american victims of iranian backed terror. senator pat toomey and congressman meehan to urge passage of the bill to ban president obama from lifting sanctions on iran until iran awards billions in damages to those terror victims. the house passed meehan's legislation last week, now needs senate approval. the "washington post" says it will keep fighting for its reporter who was convicted in iran of espionage. iran's state media reports that jason rezaian's conviction, they

reported the conviction but not saying anything about his sentence. the post says it's working with his family to try to get him released on bail. rezaian was arrested and secretly tried this year. both the post and the state department call his charges absurd. actor randy quaid and his wife are being head in vermont on $500,000 bail each. the judges arraigned the couple yesterday. the two are accused of skipping the country for canada after being charged with vandalizing a guest house in california five years ago. police at the border arrested the couple as they tried to re-enter the u.s. >> two tennessee emts spring into action after they found out about a car accident. >> a couple of unusual things, the first is that these two first responders happen to be bride and groom on the way to their wedding reception. sarah and her groom paul found out that her grandparents and father were involved in that car

accident. they stopped to help. fortunately, no one was seriously hurt. the bride's mom couldn't help but snap a photo. the bride said wedding day or not she knew she had to respond. >> i don't feel i was being heroic in any way. it's just my family was in an accident, i needed to make sure they were there, and it just happened that i'm a paramedic and i was in my wedding dress. that's all there is to it. >> as you might imagine, this photo is popular on social media. two million people checked out the picture. >> well yeah. 5:16. let's check your ride to work now on this tuesday morning. >> a couple of accidents out there including one in montgomery county. an update with nbc 10's first alert traffic reporter jessica boyington. >> well chris and tracy, what we've been dealing with most of the morning is a closure on the vine street expressway that was supposed to clear up about 5:00 a.m. they were on schedule. these are cameras here around

24th street. traffic moving along now. through the vine street expressway. that's a closure that will be there until thursday. between the schuylkill expressway and broad street in both directions. right now back open for our morning rush so no problems westbound toward the schuylkill expressway right now. watch for extra police activity if 3 are still cleaning up and getting out of the way. for the rest of the drive times we're okay, 95 southbound from wood haven to the vine street expressway haven't budged yet. 12 minutes on the schuylkill eastbound and to the center city area no problems on the blue route right now. watch out for ongoing construction out in new jersey on the white horse pike between airport circle and route 130. there is going to be a traffic shift there. more when i calm back in the next tin minutes. >> coming up on 18 minutes past 5:00. less than two hours from sunrise, we'll see sunshine but we'll also get some cloud cover.

that's what we're starting off with. that's one of the reasons that we are warmer this morning. southerly winds the other reason. though it's a light breeze, 3-mile-an-hour wind, enough to help warm temperatures up, running 8 degrees warmer than yesterday at this time. 60 degrees right now in philadelphia. dry at the shore, clouds on the increase. it's a slight chance of a shore shower, we've seen some scattered showers in central new jersey along the coast from the clouds that are moving farther away from us. meantime, another round of clouds, cold front coming in later today. around noon time we could see scattered showers in the philadelphia area. but i'm only expecting light showers and they will be spotty at best. showers move through, behind those showers cooler air that arrives for tomorrow. as far as rainfall amounts, by 11:00 this morning .01 inch. could see spotty showers this afternoon. most of the area will stay dry. the few showers will be light.

clouds, some breaks of sunshine, with light scattered showers back in the 70s again today. but then those 70s take a break. the seven-day forecast, cooler tomorrow morning, 51 in the morning, and the breeze blowing, 67 degrees in the afternoon. then it gets chillier as the wind dies down and skies clear thursday. 46. back in the 60s for thursday and friday afternoon. late friday could see some rain showers, and then it turns chillier over the weekend. 60 degrees on saturday. 30s sunday and monday morning with high temperatures only in the 50s. >> tonight it is the democrats turn to take the debate stage. a preview of the showdown saving a spot for joe biden. an agreement is in place that would produce the biggest beer giant. what happened that sealed the deal. and dozens of new emojis trying to make the cut. check out some of these. we'll show you some of the

driver killed their loved one. >> and we're tracking wet weather in our area, we'll have the timing of showers, where you are, and we'll get you ready for some cooler and i do mean cooler temperatures. it's 5:28. good morning. welcome back to "nbc 10 news today." i'm tracy davidson. >> i'm chris cato. don't go searching for the big coat yet though. it's warm out there this morning. meteorologist bill henley is standing by with the first alert forecast. >> in fact, chris, it's not as chilly as it was yesterday at this time. there are clouds moving through parts of the area. we've seen some scattered showers at the shore. those showers are moving away. and this is what's moving in. a line of light scattered showers already cleared pittsburgh moving through punxsutawney now, these light scattered showers could be here by midday. but it's going to fall apart by the time it gets here so it's not going to be steady rainfall in our area. a nice warm-up compared to yesterday. we're running from 8 to 10 degrees warmer this morning. philadelphia is 60, 54 in

wilmington and there are some spots where the skies are mostly clear, reading is 49 degrees, and still falling at this hour. stand by for sunshine but also a chance you need an umbrella. 59 at 7:00, by 10:00, 66. and low 70s at 1:00 this afternoon. we will be in the 70s this afternoon but that changes tomorrow. got your neighborhood by neighborhood forecast when i'm back in 10. jessica boyington has traffic. >> and we're checking out the schuylkill expressway where things are moving along. this is around montgomery drive. we still have a 13-minute drive time. head east into the center area, the vine back open. so watch out for some crews in the area. still cleaning up just in case. but you can see the schuylkill heading in that direction eastbound in here doing okay. if you are heading out the door in hatfield township watch for construction. a road closure between cow path road and bethlehem pike that's closed now so pay attention to

signs. mass transit, we're okay but thorndale 514 train is still running on 30-minute delays. following breaking news just in from philadelphia's neighborhood, one man is in critical condition following a home invasion and shooting around 11:30 last night on south ruby street. the victim was a 50-year-old man, not expected to survive. we're also learning that his wife and three children were also at home at the time. they weren't hurt. matt delucia is on his way to the scene now and we'll have a live report in the next half hour. also this morning a 14-year-old boy is fighting for his life after police say he was shot in the head. the teen was found lying in the middle of 10th street in front of a philadelphia housing authority police building. police say they also found a bb gun on the victim but believe that he was shot with a re
