clinging to life this morning after being shot in the head in north philadelphia. police are still looking for the gunman. >> a live look outside. we're about an hour from sunrise. you'll see less sunshine today. cooler temperatures on the horizon. it's 6:00 a.m. good morning. welcome to "nbc 10 news today." i'm tracy davidson. >> i'm chris cato. off to a warm start compared to yesterday. meteorologist bill henley is standing by with a look at our forecast. >> good deal warmer up to 18 degrees warmer in some areas this morning. but, we also have some clouds and we've seen showers. the first round is pulling away from our area right now. another round moving in from the west. that's a possibility during the day today. that's not a very impressive line. looks like the showers probably fall apart as they start to move into the area. but we'll still see spotty showers during the day today. and we'll still be in the 70s this afternoon. but that changes tomorrow. your neighborhood by neighborhood forecast, when i'm

back in ten minutes. jessica boyington is watching the traffic. >> and bill, we're checking in with new jersey roads. construction lifted out of the way. right around the deptford area at route 41 you can see a 5-minute drive time. no problems at 55 to the walt whitman bridge. here headed northbound so if you're heading to the philadelphia area or you have to get to 295, you'll have no problem from the 42 freeway right now. also watch out abington for an accident on meeting house road and devon road. and ongoing construction on the ben franklin parkway between 21st and logan. the inner drive between 21st and logan square has the right lane closed. you'll be fine. as far as drive times, still no problems, starting to see a little increase on 95 southbound, that's usually about a 13-minute trip. still a little early for that. the schuylkill and the blue

route are okay so far. and i'll have more in drive times when i come back in the next 10 minutes. >> following breaking news this morning. and police are piecing this together. a group of men broke into a home, shot a man inside, small children were home at the time. matt is live in sky force 10. >> reporter: chris and tracy, this man is in critical condition. police do not believe he will survive. let's give uf a look at the scene. this is the 1100 block of south ruby street in the kingsessing neighborhood. police are telling us this appears to be a home invasion. three men walked in the house, they are through an unlocked door. you see police shining light on the house now holding the scene. inside were five people. a family, a woman, a man, kids, the wife was taken into the kitchen and held and a masked gunman demanded money.

she said she didn't have money. she heard a gun shot. her husband had been shot, a lot of blood out there at the scene. and then the three men ran out through the front door leaving behind a rifle on the porch in this area here. so at this point police do believe that this was just a vicious home invasion but about eight blocks from the scene police say that a car hit another parked car and then was overturned. inside that car there was a bloody handgun. but when police got to the scene they didn't find anybody in the car, just that gun and they are looking into the possibility that may be the getaway car from this home invasion. right now over the scene you can see police are still there, still have it all taped off. and at this point they are investigating, still trying to find these three masked men who held up this family and now the 50-year-old man is in critical condition at this hour. for now we're live over kingsessing. matt delucia.

>> to a story we brought you last night at 11:00. >> a 14-year-old boy is fighting for his life after being shot in the head in north philadelphia. officers found the boy in front of the housing authority police building on tenth street last night. they rushed him to the hospital, he is listed in critical condition. presently he is inside the emergency room being worked on by doctors, he has a gunshot wound to his forehead. he has never regained consciousness. he is in very critical condition. it's known whether he will survive. >> so far police don't know who they are looking for. they are reviewing surveillance video from the area. from the south jersey bureau, a family's search for justice. they want to find the driver who struck and killed their loved one and kept going. police in millville say iva was riding his bike when a car hit him from behind. he was only two blocks from home. he slipped into a coma and died last week. it shaped on sharp street. we spoke to a witness who was

driving her car at the time. >> i saw in my rearview mirror him fly. and then when i was there i saw the bike, bent in half. >> police say the hit-and-run driver left critical clues, a side view mirror and headlight. the family is offering a $1,000 reward for information leading to arrest. >> it is sentencing day for a teen driver who fled. 18-year-old shashan roberts had a learners pernlt at the time. he took off and surrendered to police about a week later. he pleaded guilty. rachel hall was a senior at temple at the time. police said roberts car hit her after she rode her bike through a stop sign. she suffered a serious brain injury and is still recovering. in ocean county, a family dog attacked a 3-year-old causing serious injuries. sky force 10 was over the scene as the toddler was air lifted to

cooper medical center. police tell us the dog is a mastiff and attacked the child in the family's home. we're working to find out the child's condition and what will happen to the dog. >> it's 6:06. police are searching for two men they say tried to break into a church. police released the images of these two guys, authorities say they used tools to try to get into st. mark's church on limestone road back on september 20. if you recognize the burglaries call please. >> 6:06. happening today a viewing will be held for former leader jerry mondesire. he died last week of a brain aneurysm. today's viewing will be 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at bright hope baptist church. a celebration of life ceremony scheduled for tomorrow, the burial service is private. >> in a few hours some of the leading experts in education are

meeting to discuss the challenges facing america's schools. a familiar face will help lead that. superintendent dr. william hyde. the symposium begins at 9:30 this morning. the public is invited. mandating school uniforms the topic tonight at the easton area school board meeting after a staff survey revealed 90% agreed to consider a uniform policy. most parents support it as well. the board isn't expected to vote on the issue today. >> a russian missile maker says its investigation of the airliner over ukraine contradicts what dutch investigators found. those dutch findings are expected to be rye leaeleased l. it crashed in eastern ukraine and is widely believed to have been shot down by a surface-to-air missile. countries have contended that russian troops or russian backed

rebels fired the missile. about an hour from sunrise but clouds are moving in and we'll track showers through the area during the day today. though we'll get showers we'll get sunshine. we'll be back in the 70s. not tomorrow, behind the showers, the wind picks up turning cooler but the real cold arrives from the weekend a weekend chill and at some point it's going to be cold enough for snow. right now clear for reading and allentown. 49 in allentown, northeast philadelphia is 58 degrees, and 63 in atlantic city. clouds at the shore but it's dry for cape may. a live view from the marquis de lafayette hotel. temperatures will be climbing into the 70s at the shore today. the first round of showers moving away from us. the next line looks impressive there. but that's just light rainfall. and it will likely fall apart

for the most part coming in. there is a chance of scattered showers for camelback, bethlehem, up to 70 degrees for pennsburg. 70s for souderton and new hope. scattered daytime showers today by this evening they will move out. and at the shore mainly dry and warmer than yesterday. rehobeth up to 73, 74 in avalon. symrna 74 degrees. scattered showers later this morning and early this afternoon for thorndale, malvern and philadelphia in the low 70s. low 70s for woodstown and breaks of sunshine and a chance of scattered showers. a look at the cold weather for the weekend and beyond with the seven-day forecast when i'm back in ten minutes. >> cold weather for the weekend? did you hear about this? >> i did. have to look for all of the cold weather deal. >> flights to florida, too. it's 9 minutes after 6. maybe you're headed to work or somewhere else. looks like the schuylkill

expressway is starting to back up a little out there. >> jessica boyington has you covered. >> we're starting to see some pockets of volume start to shill up on the expressway. drive times okay but this is around belmont avenue on the eastbound side. you can see a string of break lights tends to back up the most where the schuylkill is down to two lanes either direction. that's what we're looking at. those drive time this is is flying through the curve. no problems yet. so eastbound, the blue route to the vine street expressway, right now only 13 minutes, so it hasn't budged yet. as for things going on in montgomery county we have accidents, upper providence and black rock road and in lower moreland on huntington pike. mass transit, no problems but now the thorndale line problems for 516 this time about 17

i'm matt delucia live in sky force 10 over the scene related to the home invasion, at least police are looking into that possibility right now. you see we're at 51st and locust streets, you see an overturned vehicle. police believe that may have

been the getaway car because they found a bloody handgun inside. a few minutes ago we told you about the home invasion that happened on the 1100 block of south ruby street. three men went in a house that had a mother, a father and three children inside. the 50-year-old husband had been shot. he is in critical condition right now. police don't believe he will survive. police have been telling us that this vehicle here hit a parked car. you see the parked car that's right there, there's quite a bit of damage. the area is taped off. we have police in this general area at the time. we just saw in the past minutes some police officers really looking in this section of the vehicle. they have flashlights, one officer was under the car. so this is the area they are focusing on. a lot of broken glass at the scene. we're going to continue on top of this for now we're live over west philadelphia, matt delucia, "nbc 10 news." >> a fight lands one in the hospital and the other in jail.

both were fresh men at all bright college in reading. police say an ongoing dispute led one to stab the other with a cork screw. >> had problems with the people before previously and like a lot of like they were like antagonizing him a lot and just led to that. >> pretty much of anomaly. it's not a place where we have these type of incidents that take place, an assault with a knife, i'm not -- never heard of that. >> madison is now in stable condition, stewart has been suspended from the team and is facing charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. randy quaid and his wife are held in vermont on half million dollars bail each. the judges arraigned the couple yesterday. they are accused of skipping the country for can ka after ada. police at the border arrested the couple as they tried to get back in the united states.

american red cross volunteers in south carolina will give away more cleaning supplies today to all of those people affected by last week's historic flooding. yesterday volunteers handed out tons of mops, bleach, trash bags, anything to try to get properties back to normal. nikki haley says it's time to start recovering. it will be a long road to recovery for many people and many animal shelters. now filled with displaced pets. the volunteers say 20 dogs were brought in friday alone and many are still flooded with low lying kennels washed out and indoor cages overcrowded. >> since i've been involved i can't think of a particular natural disaster of this magnitude and proportion. >> before the flooding hit the national humane society took nearly three dozen animals at overcrowded shelters to a different city. >> two tennessee emt's spring

into action after hearing about a car crash. >> what is unusual about these first responders, they happen to be bride and groom on their way to the wedding resepg. sarah and her groom paul found out her grandparents and father had been in a serious car accident so they stopped to help. no one was seriously hurt. the mom couldn't help snap a picture. she said she knew she had to respond. >> i don't feel i was being heroic in any way. it's just my family was in an accident, i needed to make sure that they were there and it happened that i'm a paramedic and i was in my wedding dress. that's all there is to it. >> the picture is pretty good, mom. so far nearly two million checked out that picture on facebook. >> if you're on the way to a wedding or just to work, how traffic is. >> 422, jessica boyington has an update. >> tuesday morning weddings, a

big hit now. all the rage. around egypt road moving along fine. a drive time of no increase, 9 minutes here from 29 to the schuylkill expressway. eastbound lane doing okay. we have a disabled vehicle in the area but not blocking lanes. just watch out if you're heading out the door. the rest, starting to see yellow in normal spots. it's 22 minutes or 15 on the schuylkill now headed eastbound from the blue route to the vine. no problems on the blue route right now. we have ongoing construction here in hatfield township. that's closed between cowpath road and bethlehem pike. we'll check in with the schuylkill expressway. almost 20 minutes after 6:00. we're watching clouds move into the area now that the skies are starting to brighten a little bit. getting a better view of the clouds that are dry.

no sign of rain just yet. helping to keep things warmer. 62 in philadelphia, 10 degrees warmer than yesterday at this time. you can see some scattered clouds. a lot of sunshine for cape may before clouds start rolling in. 40s for pottstown. rights town at 59 degrees. a cool start in camden, chillier in hattenfield. and 60 to start. another mild day, you see the clouds, there are some breaks that will get some sunshine before this line of clouds moves in. a chance of scattered light showers. most of the area not going to see that much rainfall. totals during the day today will be limited just to a few hundredths of an inch for reading and trenton, then the showers are out of here this evening. so clouds and sunshine, some scattered light showers, and back in the 70s this afternoon. but then we say so long to the

>> the philadelphia orchestra will keep playing. of course they were the house band during pope francis' appearance in philadelphia. yesterday the musicians agreed to a new one-year contract. they say they signed it to avoid a work stoppage so they can continue bringing music to fans without interruption. student workers, nurses, food service workers and adjunct professors at temple want the minimum wage increased to $15 an hour. they will make their voices heard loudly during a rally scheduled today at the bell tower. organizers say students have been requesting a meeting with the president more than six are months. student workers are the lowest

and the chill to come. >> tracy, brilliant sunshine yesterday but we're seeing clouds and we've seen some showers at the shore. the first showers are moving out, but look what's to the west. a line of showers coming in with the cold front that will bring us cooler weather tomorrow. and a chance of some scattered showers today. that's steady light rain moving past punxsutawney. a chance we'll see scattered showers as those expected to fall apart. you can see the clouds that are moving through the area. mostly cloudy start. we will get some breaks of sunshine and that will start the warming process. 59 degrees at 8:00. by 11:0068 degrees. that's the normal high temperature for this time of year. we'll make it into the 70s though there is a chance we'll see scattered showers later. your forecast, right now jessica boyington is watching traffic. >> we have an accident scene on the schuylkill expressway starting to make delays on the eastbound side. these are our cameras around

city avenue. approaching the roosevelt boulevard on the eastbound side we have an accident scene taking out the right-hand lane and the center lane as well so. a few vehicles involved in that. it's hard to squeeze on by to the left side. we're seeing delays here, 28 minutes already. average speed of 27 miles per hour. so everybody is crawling. eastbound from the blue route to the vine street expressway. right now jammed up to that point. mass transit, no problems but the thorndale line dealing with delays. check before you head out the door. 202, drive times looking okay. you can see 10 minutes and everything green, north or southbound from 30 to the schuylkill expressway. we'll have updates on the schuylkill delays when i come back. 6:32. we continue to follow breaking news. robbers invaded a home, held a gun to a woman's head and shot her husband.

that man is now in critical condition. this happened on south ruby street in the the kingsessing section of philadelphia. here is what is interesting. blocks away from there on locus street police found a car crashed and now trying to figure out if there is a connection. we'll get you more on this in a moment. we can tell that you police inside that crash car say they found a bloody handgun and katy zachry has 4. >> reporter: i can tell you that right now investigators are at the scene on south ruby street. police tell me the person who was shot in that home is not expected to survive. sky force 10 was above the home not long ago. inside were three young children, they live there had with their parents. the kids are 10 months, two years and five years old. they all had to endure this terrifying event. police say several men with guns broke into the home and demanded money.

the family pleaded with them that they had none. telling the armed intruder that they were poor. unfortunately during that time the 50-year-old father and husband was shot, he is not expected to survive. police say minutes after the shooting a chevy malibu crashed about eight blocks from the home. the car overturned. by the time police got there whoever was inside had run out. officers say they found a bloody handgun in the car. at this hour investigators tell me they are treating that second scene t car crash cease, as that it could be connected to this home invasion. of course the quhechevy malibu possibly the getaway car. reporting live in southwest philadelphia, katy zachry, "nbc 10 news." to decision 2016, the democratic candidates for president square off tonight in las vegas. here's the line-up. hillary clinton, bernie sand es, martin o'malley, lincoln chafee

shows new jersey governor's chris christie's numbers are down. 35% have a favorable opinion of him. that's up from august when he had his lowest rating but it's still down overall. on the issue of taxes, 25% of voters like christie's policies. the poll also found that six in ten voters think new jersey is on the wrong track. >> in the race for philadelphia mayor, we know a lit more about where the two candidates stand. jim kenny and melissa bailey faced off on the issue of police bailey would add 500. election day is three weeks from today, tuesday, november 3. a judge denied bail for the man charged with the murder of a transgender woman in philadelphia. now police are zeroing in on three other men they say were

involved in the killing of keisha jenkins. police arrested pedro reading. reading has four prior arrests. nbc 10 talked to friends of the victim who say they hope justice will be served. >> no matter what lifestyle we live, what professions we work, nobody deserves this. >> last week a group of men beat and shot jenkins after she got out of a car. police ruled out as a hate crime. reading cooperated and claims he did not pulaski the -- pull the trigger. >> a judge will sentence a former army major and his wife convicted of child abuse. john and caroline jackson broke their bone, denied medical attention, with holding water and force feeding hot staus. it falls under federal jurisdiction because the crimes were committed in a military

base. >> temple university's board will vote on bill cosby's replacement. he resigned from the board last year at the height of the sexual assault controversy. the board today will vote on the nomination of nbc's tamron hall. the chairman of the board calls the temple graduate a home run adding she has all of the support she needs. if selected hall will be the fourth woman appointed to the board. also today, university officials will name and dedicate the school in honor of the late lewis katz. he was killed in a plane crash. before his death katz donated $25 million to the school. 1963 gr si6 graduate. >> your first alert weather are meteorologist bill henley. >> about a half hour from sun rise and we are going to see a

little sunshine. but i'm tracking some showers that will be moving through parts of the area during the day today. that's a cold front producing the showers. behind it, chillier weather starting tomorrow. it's going to get even colder as we go into the weekend. another cold front. allentown one of the coolest at 58 in northeast philadelphia and atlantic city even warmer at 63 degrees. you can see the pocono mountains getting some breaks but it's not going to be as clear as it was yesterday and over the weekend. tan clouds could give us shower. so far it's dry but the line of showers from the west, into tral praxt right now and the hit set they showers to start with are going to start falling apart as they move into lancaster, reading and allentown. as they try to move into philadelphia, look, it's

>> the christ redeemer statue has been above rio de janeiro for 84 years, hundreds of foreigners and tourists gathered to mark the anniversary yesterday. the 98-foot tall statue opened in 1931, took nine years to build. that's a lot of numbers. it towers 2,000 feet above the city and the symbol of christianity around the world. investigators in kansas city will continue looking into what caused an apartment fire that killed two firefighters last night. officials say crews were on the scene for about a half hour when the building's roof collapsed. two other crew members were hurt and remain in the hospital. were inside was evacuated before the collapse. >> more proof that dogs are man's best friend. this is nashville, tennessee. look at the fire.

a volunteer firefighter on his way to his daughter's birthday party saw that, ran in, came out with a huge dog who had somehow been trapped inside. witnesses say after he saved the dog he just left. >> he got in his car and left. it was so weird. he took off. >> real heroes to me were the volunteers. they're not getting paid. they come up and do this for free. i don't do it for people to say thank you and pat me on the back. i do it because it needs to be done. >> the guy was reunited the sampson, thing due, after the owners reached out to say thank you. >> a florida woman is learning the price of drinking and driving and broadcasting that dangerous decision to the world. >> i think i'm drunk. let's see if i get a dui. >> whitney there, she used the

live app periscope to show herself driving home drunk. her followers called 911 and it didn't take long until police found her on the side of the road with damage to her car. and they arrested her. >> the minute they found her driving, flat front tire, hit the curb again. they pulled her over. it was obvious she was intoxicated. she went to jail. >> after the arrest she said she doesn't remember much about that night. she said it was a huge mistake and she has learned a lesson. >> 104 days and counting, that's pennsylvania's -- how long pennsylvania has gone without a state budget. so could gambling fix the stalemate? republican lawmakers are considering an increase to gaming to balance the budget deficit without raising taxes. supporters say the third expansion of gambling in six years could bring in millions in one-time licensing fees.

for the money yet. >> the committee in charge of saving lucy the elephant is saying no to a donation from peta. the organization wanted the jersey shore landmark to promote awareness of the treatment of circus animals in exchange for a donation to repair the elephant. the renovation would include if peta had their way, shackling one of her feet and adding a tear drop below her eye. the board declined saying she must be a happy place for children to visit. tracy morgan is back doing comedy. >> last night he did his first set on stage since that horrible crash on the new jersey turnpike. look at this photo. it shows him doing stand-up in manhattan. last year he suffered brain and body injures after a tractor-trailer crashed into the back of his limo bus. morgan's friend and fellow comedian james mcnair died.

are a couple spots in the 40s. we will see a warm-up. we'll be back in the 70s this afternoon. but a cold front on the way. this will give us a chance of showers during the day. and then behind those showers the cooler air you'll start feeling tomorrow. looks good now. but by the time this one starts moving into our area. the showers still to fall apart. at 10:00 our futurecast showing a few scattered showers. then the first tine fizzles. at noon time 68 degrees in philadelphia. into the 70s this afternoon but during the afternoon we could see some scattered light showers in the area, continuing into the evening hours. but by midnight tonight those are off shore and the cooler air starts taking over. the forecast is calling for clouds, sunshine, and a chance of scattered light showers.

>> reporter: a family with young children, police say men with guns stormed their home on the 1100 block of south ruby street, they held the parents and their three children at gunpoint. the men demanded money. in the end the 50-year-old husband and father was shot, police tell me he is not expected to survive. now a few blocks from that scene i'm told police found an overturned chevy malibu that
