we're following breaking news in northeast philadelphia this morning. a walmart worker is stabbed on the job. we're live on the scene coming up. >> there are new clues now in the murder of a local doctor, police suspect a former patient obsessed with her killed her. and now they may know why. >> and we're in store for a sunny but breezy day today. temperatures in the 60s. so, what's happening this weekend? the answer just ahead in your nbc 10 first alert forecast. good morning. welcome to "nbc 10 news today." i'm lauren mayk. >> i'm chris cato. what's happening this weekend you're going to say where did i put my big coat? >> cold out. >> and a big bed spread for the bed. meteorologist bill henley is here with his morning forecast. it's not too bad this morning. >> you can repurpose that blanket during the day, chris. you need it over the weekend. there is a cold front on the way and will bring us cold for the weekend. it's producing some fast-moving showers this morning.

a line of showers from the pocono mountains to the lehigh valley and the western suburbs. these are really moving at nearly 50 miles an hour. so, it won't take long for them to swing through chester county, some light rainfall moving into western chester county, eastern lancaster and the reading area seeing raindrops. we could see a brief sprinkle but they are on the move. we'll wind up with sunshine. clouds to start, 54 degrees at 7:00. 10:00, bright sunshine and 58. and the winds stronger as we go into the afternoon. but a little warmer, too, with sunny skies, 64 degrees. neighborhood by neighborhood forecast and a look at the weekend when i'm back in ten minutes. jessica boyington right now is watching your friday morning traffic. >> and we're still watching the p.a. turnpike, bill, where we do have a tractor-trailer fire, reports of the tires actually catching fire. that's on the p.a. turnpike westbound between valley forge and route 29. drive times still okay on the p.a. turnpike westbound or

eastbound. 22 minutes between valley forge and route 1 right now. out in philadelphia, still watch out for the chestnut street bridge closed over on 95, the penns landing. all traffic is currently being diverted to front street north and southbound to get around it your best bet take dock to race, head back on columbus boulevard and you'll be fine. 95 around the betsy ross bridge no problems, 13 minutes, southbound from woot haven to the vine street expressway. breaking news now, police are on the hunt for a suspect after a robbery and a stabbing in a walmart in northeast philadelphia. monique braxton is live at the scene where police say they have surveillance footage of the suspect. what are you learning about this? >> reporter: philadelphia police tell us this is the man they want you to help them find. they believe he tried to steal

two pairs of boots and a flat screen tv from this walmart here at philadelphia mills, just before 1:30 this morning. they also say he stabbed a 35-year-old employee once in the right arm. this is what police told us. the shopper had a 48-inch tv and the boots in the shopping cart on the way out when he was confronted by a cashier he presented an old $10 receipt. the cashier attempts to stop him and that's when the cashier is stabbed. a customer in the parking lot also tried to block him with a shopping cart inside the parking lot, but the suspect fled. he fled with the flat screen tv, he left the boots behind and right now police say they believe he was driving a toyota prius or similar car. the walmart employee was treated at the scene and released. police also want you to know that this is a 24-hour walmart,

when this incident occurred there were 30 employees and 20 customers in the store. and one of those customers tried to help here in this parking lot. so that's the investigation where it stands now. we're going to continue to monitor it. any developments, count on us to bring it to you. in philadelphia mills, monique braxton, "nbc 10 news." >> thanks. 5:34. we have new information this morning, a university of delaware student who police describe as obsessed faces charges in the stabbing death of a local psychiatrist. and an internet post from 10 months ago may provide a motive. it was signed by christopher frick, the same name as police say confessed to the murder. in the post the writer complains about the now murdered doctor and the institution where she works. nbc 10's katy zachry joins us live. a stunning crime here that police are still trying to figure out. >> that's right.

chris, reading that post you realize how much anger and frustration the writer of it has toward the doctor who is now murdered as well as the place where she worked. christopher frick accused of murdering his former psychiatrist. it happen independent the doctor's home. dr. ekong who was 55 and had a family worked at the rockford center, we found an online review for that facility. someone posting as christopher frick calls it a prison, claiming to have said yes when a psychiatrist asked if he ever had suicidal thoughts. the person goes on to blame caroline ekong for his imprisonment and for not admitting she was wrong. police right now are not confirming that frick did write the post. in the next half hour we'll share with you what some of frick's classmates are saying. katy zachry, "nbc 10 news." this morning a man wanted for raping and robbing a temple university student is in custody. police tracked down bennett on

wednesday. this is surveillance video we're going to show you that the police released of the suspect. this attack happened september 28 a block from temple's campus. the victim was on the way home from the library when a man hit her in the arm with a gun, push heard into her construction area and victimized her. >> two of the three suspects accused of beating up a gay couple will have to steer clear of center city for five years. but they won't have to spend time in jail. you may recall one victim suffered a broken jaw and cheek bones in the attack. willi the two pleaded guilty aggravated assault and conspiracy charges. in exchange for the guilty pleas they will both only get probation. however, they must stay out of center city for their entire probation. they also have to do community service with the lgbt community. williams and harrigan say the attack was not motivated by sexual orientation. a third defendant refused a deal

and will go to trial. the trial date for her has not been set. testimony is expected to wrap up soon for the contractor who is accused in the deadly market street building collapse. griffin campbell took the stand on wednesday in his own defense. he faces six counts of third-degree murder. he told the jury that he had no formal training as a demolition contractor and was basically just told what to do by the demolition architects. campbell claims that he had only demolished two small row homes prior to agreeing to demolish a four story building that eventually collapsed on top of a salvation army thrift store, killing six people. >> still ahead, a shark sighting and a familiar one. we'll fill you in on the great white that observers say has made a return to the jersey shore. bill. >> it's 53 degrees at 5:37. some clouds and some fast-moving showers this morning. your neighborhood by neighborhood forecast just ahead. vince mazzeo-

>> he struck him out! the new york mets have won the series. >> playoff baseball keeps on rolling in the big ap well that, the mets advance to their first nlcs since 2006. and they play the chicago cubs. saturday in queens. and last night's game was like it has been all year. new york relying on pitching to get it done. it was a pitcher's duel in los angeles as they face the dodgers in that elimination game. a close one all the way but the mets win 3-2 thanks to the bull pen. 20 minutes before 5:00. a cool start and we're watching for some showers. clouds are moving towards philadelphia, the showers are in the western suburbs. right now dry in northeast philadelphia and 52 degrees. there's the rain. this is a cold front that's moving in that will bring us colder air for the weekend. the light showers are starting to taper off in the pocono

mountains. allentown seeing a sprinkle or two but those are clearing out. and to the west, westchester, approaching this morning, western chester county seeing light rainfall, those are fast-moving showers. nearly 50 miles an hour, so they are not going to last long. the clouds, they will keep on going. camelback, bethlehem, bright sunshine this afternoon. 67 at bordentown and morristown, abington warms to 66, and sunshine at the shore. middle to upper 60s this afternoon for rehobeth, cape may and avalon. 68 in su su su su su su so shower potentially for malvern and philadelphia. 68 for philadelphia, 66 in wilmington. the weekend, that's going to be chillier. gusty winds on saturday. 57. those winds will bring the temperature down into the 30s sunday morning. warming to 54 sunday afternoon. then it gets colder.

>> lamar odom remains unconscious this morning two days after he suffered a medical emergency at a nevada brothel. sources close to odom tell our sister network the doctors are treating the situation as a drug overdose. he is in a coma and breathing with the help of a ventilator. his ex-wife khloe kardashian is said to be at his bedside. doctors found drugs in his system and say he suffered brain damage from at least one stroke. support is pouring in from former teammates and fans. the hash tag prayers for lamar is trending on social media. this just in, new surveillance video has been released of lamar odom's arrival saturday. it shows odom entering the love ranch just before 5:30 saturday evening. the brothel owner says odom paid $75,000 and was getting read the extend his stay. employees told police odom used cocaine the day he arrived and an herbal sexual sometime you

labt throughout his visit. >> a texas high school football coach is suspended for a year for his role in that onfield incident when his players tackled a referee. matt greed teared up while trying to convince the committee why he should be allowed to coach again. he is accused of ordering his players to attack that referee during a game. we've seen this several times. the players allege that the referee directed racial slurs at them. breed said he told his players that watts quote needed to pay the price for those slurs. but he says his comments were taken out of context. >> coached a long time, he knows how intense i am. my style of coaching. and he's always told me i don't need to be that way. >> he has been suspended for the remainder of the 2015-16 school year and placed on probation for two more years. >> turning to decision 2016, a

top aide to democratic front-runner hillary clinton will testify before the congressional committee investigating the benghazi attack. huma abedin was working for clinton. clinton is to testify before the committee next week. she received a key endorsement while in texas yesterday, h.u.d. secretary and former san antonio mayor julian castro was there. she would consider him as a running mate if she wins the nomination. we are getting a hint about with what vice president joe biden's presidential campaign might look like if he decides to run. long time biden adviser ted kaufman says the vice president would run an optimistic unscripted campaign from the heart. that is according to an e-mail obtained by the associated press that kauffman sent to biden supporters. kauffman says a main theme of a biden campaign would be restoring middle class opportunity. >> republican front-runner

donald trump says he is funding his own campaign but that doesn't stop people from sending in unsolicited donations. campaign documents show he raised nearly $4 million over three months. his campaign says it received 74,000 unsolicited donations, the average contribution a little more than $50. trump has personally spent about $2 million since launching his campaign. >> republican hopeful marco rubio brought his campaign to king of prussia. the florida senator was in town to speak. rubio says his campaign is prepared for a long fight. >> now to a major change in strategy from the commander in chief. american troops will stay on the ground in afghanistan longer than the president's original deadline. president obama made this announcement yesterday saying the new plan calls for 5500 troops to remain in afghanistan when he leaves office in early

2017. the shift retreats from his promise to end the war there during his tenure. the president called the security situation in afghanistan still very fragile. he says in some cases there are risks of deterioration. a new report says american special prapgss analysts knew the target of a deadly air strike in afghanistan was a hospital being used by doctors without borders. the associated press says the officials suspected the hospital was being used by a pakistani operative to coordinate taliban activity. doctors without borders says the facility was not being used for military purposes. >> she doesn't come with ominous theme music but the great white shark known as mary lee is back. the shark returned to new jersey coast line. researchers tagged mary lee three years ago. yesterday the shark was spotted near ocean city. she gained popularity in the spring. she has her own twitter handle.

she spent most of her summer off the coast of florida, georgia, and the carolinas. always a good place to spend your summer. >> unless there is a shark there. >> right. >> certainly doesn't feel like summer any more. >> no. and this weekend it will really feel like a bit of a winter preview as temperatures will go into the 30s over the weekend. right now, though, it is dry. at least for now on boathouse row, that's a live view from the mellon bank building. we have clouds that are moving through the area. they are racing through the area. and the few showers, they are quickly moving through as well. so, we will see clearing skies and sunshine. what we're looking at our temperatures that are falling this morning. with a few clouds in the area, we're in the 40s and 50s. rain falling in the pocono mountains to 46 degrees. northeast philadelphia, a few scattered clouds. and atlantic city is 59 degrees with clear skies. and dry for now in center city.

a live view from the comcast center in center city. it will be a brief shower if it reaches the city. most of the area will be drying out quickly. satellite shows the clouds that are moving through the area right now, western pennsylvania, you can see those clouds are already clearing out. the showers will move through the area, and then we will see sunshine. pittsburgh seeing clearing skies will get the same. some scattered showers barely holding on to the pocono mountains and chester county portions of montgomery county, the showers barely reaching the ground moving to the east at 50 miles an hour. over the weekend that's when the chill will be around saturday afternoon 4:00, look at that, 55 in philadelphia. watch the temperatures as we go into sunday morning at 2:00 in the morning. 39 degrees in the city. by 8:00 in the morning, 36 in philadelphia, allentown, reading, and lancaster at or below freezing at this hour. at that hour we could see frost in the area. if not a hard freeze for some

spots farther north and west. becoming sunny today. clouds are out of here, breezy and 60s this afternoon. tomorrow, chilly to start with, chillier than today. 44 in the morning, then 57 in the afternoon and gusty winds and it's going to be chilly for the temple owls game. a cold breeze sunday. by sunday morning 36 degrees. middle 50s sunday afternoon. and a colder morning on monday. 33 to start with, 54 the high temperature. temperatures will be climbing next week, 60s tuesday, back to the 70s wednesday and thursday. >> that's more like it. bringing it back up there. 5:53. let's check the roads again before you head out the door. >> if you've got to get out of here by 6:00, well, this is the time. >> this may be the time to avoid part of the schuylkill expressway now? >> we're seeing small delays. it's off of an on ramp so not directly on the schuylkill expressway. these are cameras from passayunk

avenue. at the on ramp heading to the schuylkill expressway, westbound right in here. so that's where the cars are going to merge together. you can see an accident scene, police activity, several vehicles involved blocking off this entire off ramp as cars squeeze by to the right-hand side. and no huge backup behind the schuylkill expressway right now. we'll keep you updated on that as the cars merge together. for 95, not really seeing a big increase in drive times yet. southbound still 14 minutes and i'll have updates on the accident to come. 5:54. a new experience for students in new jersey. we'll take a look at a pilot program that google is bringing to those schools.

look at this. a new experience for students in new jersey. google is bringing them on a virtual field trip. it's a pilot program that gives kids at newark elementary school a passport to over 100 destinations through google goggles. google recorded locations in 3-d so it's like the kids are there though they never leave the classroom. i wish i could see what they are
