freeze. >> a live picture where cars are covered with frost. we're going to get your first alert forecast hour by hour this morning. good morning. this is "nbc 10 news today." i'm lauren mayk. >> i'm chris cato. bill told us friday that the cold was coming. really forget until you step out the door and it slaps you in the face how chilly it is. quite a monday morning. >> yeah, you might need extra time to find your ice scraper with so much frost. it's widespread this morning. the temperatures have plummeted overnight. didn't get that warm yesterday but it definitely is cold this morning. 36 degrees in philadelphia. that's 5 degrees colder than yesterday at this time. and there's a light breeze but it's enough to make it feel like it's 31. look at the 20s, reading, pottstown, doylestown, millville, atlantic city in the 20s and dropped to 32 degrees at northeast philadelphia airport. haddonfield is 27, and below freezing in glendora and
voorhees, a cold start. you have to layer up. you'll also need your sunglasses because we'll get a lot of sunshine so even though we're under freeze warnings this morning we'll see temperatures climb as we go through the day. 36 degrees, that's 8:00 this morning, that's 45 minutes after sunrise. at 11:00, 46 degrees. and then in the low 50s by 2:00 this afternoon. but not much warmer than that later today. i'll go through it neighborhood by neighborhood with the forecast when i'm back in ten minutes. jessica boyington has monday morning first alert traffic. >> quieter than we normal i are for a monday morning, everybody's staying in a little longer under the covers for this cold morning. 95 around academy row we're okay. really hasn't budged, to the vine street expressway these are the southbound lanes in there, so if you're headed to the center city area of 95, typically the highway that jams up first, as for 202, no problems here. we have a 10 minute drive time north or southbound from 30 to the schuylkill expressway so
everybody is moving along. mass transit, new jersey transit, patco, dart doing great. 10 minute delays for septa's airport train number 403. thanks so much. pull out the big coats and gloves, it is cold out. katy zachry is live at jenkintown station where people are staying in cars longer this morning to keep warm. not katy. she is braving that cold for us. >> reporter: i don't think i have a choice, lauren. i'll get back to you on that, talking about people who are waiting in cars a little longer this morning. as evidence of this vehicle here. the driver pulled up and i can tell this person is going to hop out as soon as the train pulls up. we're seeing more people waiting in the warm ticket lobby since it opened up about an hour ago. here on the train platform, the only people we're seeing actually standing out in these elements weight are those who are dressed appropriately for temperatures at or below
freezing. >> i come from the house, i walk a foot to my garage, get in the garage, it's warm, and i came out bundled and yes, so it's not bad. >> reporter: it's not bad if you are bundled like that woman. from our video we shot not long ago you see plenty of people getting on the septa train headed to center city, and many of them are not dressed for this weather. some tell me these conditions caught them offguard. others tell me they haven't pulled out the winter gear yet. they said we experienced warm temperatures last week. later we're expected to experience warm temperatures again. back out live you see a bunch of people quickly getting on the septa buses or trains rather, headed to center city. our entire area as bill mentioned is under a freeze warning until 9:00 a.m. so particularly your kids going
to the bus stop, needing to wait for the bus this morning they are going to be cold. definitely need the extra layers, the heavy coats, the jackets and the scarf. so that's the latest live here in montgomery county. katy zachry, "nbc 10 news." >> 6:04. this is new, one driver in critical condition after a crash involving a car and a tow truck. look at that mangled car. this in south philadelphia. firefighters had to pull the driver out of that wrecked car. no word on what caused the crash. philadelphia police are now on the scene of two car fires that appear to be arson. they happened around 3:15 this morning near the corner of janny and east tioga streets. police say someone put rags in the two cars in the gas tanks and lit them on fire. a neighbor managed to put out the fires with a garden hose before they were too badly
damaged. >> this morning fire investigators will be back at a country club in montgomery county trying to figure out why a clubhouse went up in flames. we have video for you, more than 100 firefighters battled the flames. the fire was contained to the clubhouse. officials say that is a total loss. they say the building' design including its wooden roof made it very difficult to put out the flames. and to make things worse the nearest fire hydrant was 1500 feet away. >> actually tap into three different hydrants to be able to have enough water so we had several thousand feet of hose. >> i have never stine a fire in person that strong before. >> no one was hurt in this fire. officials issued a statement thanking members for their support and saying they hope to come back stronger. >> look at this, delaware state police are looking for two men considered armed and dangerous murder suspects, after a deadly home invasion in the dover area.
troopers say the pair broke into a home in rodney village, the owner there was killed in a struggle with the suspects and his 18-year-old daughter died as shots were fired as the suspects ran from the scene. both men are from the philadelphia area, if you think you've seen them call police. >> this morning we're working to find out more information on a 17-year-old boy shot in northeast philadelphia. nbc 10 was on the scene last night. police say someone shot the teen in the shoulder. he is in stable condition. no word on any suspects at this point. >> in northeast pennsylvania the man accused of firing at police outside a walmart in will action bear will be charged with attempted murder. police responded about gun fire on saturday. when they arrived a gunman fired shots. police wounded the suspect and he is in the hospital. he will be arraigned in the next
few days. investigators have not released a possible motive. >> a driver who caused more than $100,000 in damage during a hit-and-run crash is still on the run. witnesses tell us they spotted the dark pickup truck going about 70 miles an hour in newark, new castle county yesterday morning. it slammed into a homeowner's driveway and clipped an suv before crashing into the other two cars. >> a plowed bank, sounded like an explosion. >> you walk out, what do you see? >> disaster in the driveway. you can see he pushed the vehicles probably 8 to 10 foot. >> police are looking for an s-250 with front end damage. 6:07. happening later today the jury in the center city building collapse trial will resume after breaking for the weekend. the jurors have to decide if the demolition contractor griffin campbell acted recklessly in july 2013, charged with
third-degree murder, his company was taking down a building when a four story brick wall collapsed onto a neighboring store, killing six. the defense calls it nothing but a horrible accident. prosecutors say campbell valued money over lives. >> the archdiocese of philadelphia is the closing a church. yesterday officials announced st. mary of the assumption will no longer serve as a worship site and will close. st. mary of the assumption merged with st. john the baptist in 2012. financial challenges are just too great to keep up the building. eight minutes after 6:00. it's october but feels like december. we've got frosty windshields across the entire area as the temperatures have plummeted. we will see sunshine today. but like yesterday we're in for a chilly one with temperatures only in the 50s this afternoon.
good news is we've got a warming trend and it's going to start tomorrow. right now, though, heading out the door, 22 for mount pocono. clear and below freezing now in trenton at 30 degrees, and 31 and 30 degrees in wilmington. making snow in the pocono mountains, showing off the snow making equipment. certainly cold enough for that. but there's going to be a warm-up the next few days so a lot of that will be disappearing. if you thought it was chilly yesterday we're colder this morn, 8 degrees colder in pottstown, wilmington and philadelphia, 5 degrees colder than yesterday morning. skies are clear, we won't see those pop-up showers that we saw across the area yesterday. that produced snow for the northern and western suburbs. sunshine, 50s for reading, allentown and quakertown. bright sunshine and light breeze out of the west for doylestown, norristown and mount holly. along the coast low 50s karks may, 51.
53 for vineland and 50s for philadelphia and wilmington with sunny skies. and that is during the day, going to the game it's chilly in a hurry. the temperatures falling into the 40s for tailgating. kickoff 45 degrees, by fourth quarter in the low 40s. time to head out on the roads. >> we had a couple of issues pop up. and jessica boyington got word of an accident in montgomery county. >> montgomery county, actually we're out there in worcester. so a few things going on there. for the vine street expressway we have no real problems around 24th street. the westbound lanes in here that is headed to the schuylkill expressway. no problems there. eastbound to 95, we're moving along. i checked in with drive times,

home. the body is likely janiya. investigators say the girl's aunt and grandmother made the discovery and then called police. janiya's mother was arrested after refusing to answer questions about her daughter's whereabouts during a court hearing. a medical examiner will determine the official identity of the body and the cause of death. from the delaware bureau, two families are homeless after fire tore through their mobile homes. this is a case of arson. flames broke out early yesterday at the trailer park on indiana road in stanton. police told us three homes were set on fire there. damage to two of them is in the tens of thousands of dollars. one victim told us he and other family members including children woke up to the smell of smoke. >> running outside the house and like there's fire, fire, and then we were like wake up and everybody woke up.
>> the red cross is helping the families involved. police have not made arrests in this but say it appears the culprits also tried to steal a car before setting the homes on fire. >> this from the south jersey bureau. burlington county hosting a free training session to educate the public. it's used to treat heroin overdose patients. the training takes place tonight at the burlington city police department. >> also happening today, allentown's new police chief will be sworn in. keith morris will assume his duties, he has been with the force there for 18 years, the last two as assistant chief. morris replaces the chief who left to become the police chief of ft. worth, texas. drone operators will have to register aircraft up der a new plan being announced today. the plan will require any one buying a drone to register it with the department of
transportation. the move stems from concerns over recent close calls between drones and commercial airliners. transportation secretary fox will join the head of the faa for today's announcement. online giant amazon is going after more than 1,000 people accused of selling fake product reviews. the company says the defendants in the suit are writing fake five star reviews in exchange for money. amazon is are suing. the company went after certain websites and had them shut down. now it's going after individuals who are selling the fake reviews. >> 6:17. new this morning first lady michelle obama will unveil encouraging students to continue after high school. the website bettermakeroom.org a place for 14-19-year-olds to get information how to sign up for the s.a.t. and a.c.t. exams and
fill out financial aid forms and apply for college. she will announce the new phase of her initiative at a white house event this morning. then on wednesday she'll head to ohio for a rally at the university of akron with nba superstar lebron james. >> good housekeeping magazine is without a list of the safest car seats on the market. for infants the chicco key fit is one of the favorites. it has one pull strap. for convertible seats they like the britax advocate tight fit up to children 65 pounds. it gave the graco contender 65 high marks for a headrest that adjusts easily. >> nbc 10 following breaking news from sky force 10. giving us this live view of chester township. we learned that a person was hit by a train. csx train, not a commuter train.
again a person was hit by a train and the person was killed. a deadly train accident where a person was hit by a csx train and killed. we don't know how the person was on the tracks at the time, if this was an accident or what the circumstances were. but we're working on getting more information and we'll bring that to you as soon as we get it. let's take a look at the roads this morning. see how things are looking before you head out. >> it's chilly. you want the heater in the car for sure. jessica boyington has a look at one of the major routes for us. >> we're on route 42 in new jersey right now. the northbound lanes are what you're looking at here, you can see the drive times great, five minutes from 65 to the walt whitman bridge. no problems into philadelphia if you're on the 42 freeway. watch out in new jersey for construction on route 322. on route 54 at 12th street there
is a traffic shift and ongoing work. right through the conshohocken curve you can see everything is moving along, all in the green, drive times are down eastbound from the blue route to the vine street expressway, that's 14 minutes westbound from the vine to the blue route about a 12 minute trip. >> you know it's not even halloween yet and some people in parts of this area have already seen snow. here is the proof, this video by one of our viewers. snowflakes yesterday in brookhaven, delaware county. no accumulation there. look at this. snow blanketed portions of upsit new york. almost six inches on the ground in spots. ., a little too soon for that. let's go to meteorologist bill henley for a look at what's coming ahead. we're not going to warm up too dramatically. >> it will get warmer. the coldest is yet to come. skies are clear. look that the, they are making snow in the pocono mountains.
reading saw snowflakes yesterday. the mountains saw scattered snow showers, taking advantage of the cold temperatures, 22 degrees in mount pocono. low 30s in philadelphia and clear skies, the temperatures can come down even though the sun's not up. the coldest time of day is after sun rise. the heat is escaping faster than the early sun. 30 right now in wilmington. dropped below freezing. wrightstown is at 30 degrees. and in montgomery county 28 now in blue bell and lafayette hill, below freezing in willow grove. collegeville 26, and the 20s for pottstown and gilbertsville at 29. a cold start but we will see sunny skies. we won't have a repeat of the scattered showers that came through the area yesterday. those clouds are now offshore so it will stay dry. you'll have to bundle up at the bus stop. 30 in the suburbs, 34 center
city. freeze warning until 9:00 this morning as the temperatures slowly climb in the low to mid-50s. tomorrow starts a warm-up. 42 to start with. we'll see 30s in the suburbs, we should stay above freezing overnight. 69 degrees, almost 70 tomorrow afternoon and then it's into the 70s for wednesday and thursday. could it possibly last into the weekend? not that time around. 60 on friday, clouds arrive saturday, 61, we'll be warmer on sunday but a chance of rain showers. p >> happy college student's dad has become much more. ahead the fight stop night terrors. and this may look like a regular house but it is so much more. this house is built to withstand serious wind and flooding. we'll look at what could be the future of the jersey shore. doylestown 27, 28 degrees in millville and wrightstown, below freeze, south philadelphia, 29 degrees. northeast philadelphia at the airport there it's 32. red sox borrow is 32. and 29 at fifth and warden along the delaware river trail. water keeping things warmer. it's a cold start this morning, freeze warning until 9:00 this morning. the temperatures will slowly climb. 60s are not happening but not far away. 36 at 8:00, by 11:00, 46. and 51 degrees at 2:00 this afternoon. a look at the neighborhood by neighborhood forecast, and an idea of when the 60s will arrive when i'm back. jessica boyington has first alert traffic. >> and bill, we're seeing big jams now on 95 right around academy road. we're almost at a half hour drive time, what's going on there, 29 minutes south from woodhaven to the vine street
expressway. 29 miles per hour, the average speed right in here is the southbound direction. northbound lanes clearly doing much better. and a few accidents in montgomery county. another one that popped up in upper moreland, park avenue and west more land road. septa, norristown 6212 train is about 10 minutes late. >> well, in case you haven't done it yet bundle up. parts of the area are under a freeze warning with temperatures in the upper 20s and low 30s as bill showed us. katy zachry is live outside septa's jenkintown station. you were showing us some of the people there have frost on the windshield and it's going to be a cold week for that train. >> reporter: it has been a cold week. so many people out here, chris. if they are not in their cars keeping warm, many of them are inside the septa ticket lobby.
it is warm inside i can tell you first-hand. for those bundled, some are braving the cold along the platforms. i can tell you most of the trains running through the septa station have been running on or close to schedule so that is good. you haven't had to wait out there too early. looking at the radar it's clear, we love to see that. take a look at the temperature, it is freezing here in the area. here's how some are dealing with the cold. >> my gloves are here, my heavy coat is here, it's kind of weird because the other day i was in shorts, you know, on friday running around. >> a little nippy for that. >> reporter: and don't put away the warm weather clothes because we as you heard expected to get in the 60s and 70s later this week. but it's really hard to think about 60s or 70s when you're coming out to layer a frost on
so many of these cars. look at that. it's not even november yet. reporting live, katy zachry, nbc 10 news. >> new information about the 2-year-old boy found wandering in love park. a ministry has launched a campaign to raise $12,000 in 12 days for the boy's family. the parents told police they were kicked out of their home friday so spent the night in love park and the toddler ran off while they were asleep. he and his sister are in state custody. a group chosen 300 wants to raise enough money to pay for one year of housing for the family and providing money management and social services. >> 6:35. happening today chocka fattah jr. is back in court for alle d allegedly misusing federal education money to pay for personal expenses. fattah says that is not true and that the government's case is
weak. his father congressman chalka fattah is accused in a separate case. he also denies wrong doing. his wife nbc 10's renee chenault-fattah is on leave from nbc 10, she is mentioned in the federal indictment against her husband, the feds allege that she took part in a scheme to fraudulently sell a car in order to pay closing costs on a vacation home. she is not charged with a crime and denies any wrong doing. now to decision 2015. the race for philadelphia mayor is back in the spotlight tonight. democrat jim kenney and republican melissa murray bailey will debate, set for 7:30 tonight at temple university's center for the performing arts. doors open at 6:30. the forum is free but you need to register. you can also tweet questions firstname.lastname@example.org using the #next mayorphl. >> do you music.

look at this beautiful view from the comcast center. some distant clouds, brilliant sunshine is in store for us. it is just well, about 34 minutes away from coming up this morning. the temperatures will be coming up. it's chillier than yesterday morning. so if you are out and about, and felt that chill, it is 8 degrees colder in pottstown, 5 degrees colder in wilmington, trenton is down by 4 degrees. our skies are clear, satellite shows no sign of the showers that we saw yesterday. we'll be in the clear tonight, too, for the eagles game. look at the chill, 49 degrees for tailgating by kickoff 45 and the temperatures dropping as the day goes on. the temperatures will climb before we get to the 40s into the 50s for fleet wood, bethlehem and camelback. brilliant sunshine for bordentown, abington, into the 50s at the shore but barely. rehobeth, 51, symrna 54 and

to slow, westbound is seeing a bigger increase in the drive time into center city. for the vine street expressway to the blue route about 20 minutes and i don't know if you heard there is an eagles game later so there will be a lot of stadium traffic. the game at 8:30 at lincoln financial field. we expect the volume in the area, you know tailgaters present at least 5:00 on. chris. >> an awful story out of chicago. an innocent game of cops and robbers turned deadly. we'll tell you why the shooting that left a 3-year-old boy dead could have been prevented. and trump versus bush, the race is heating up as the donald makes comments about september 11 and former president george bush. jeb bush is fighting back.

decision 2016 this morning. another weekend has come and gone and we're inching closer to filing deadlines, still no decision from vice president joe biden running for the white house. we did see thim this weekend at his granddaughter's cross country meet on saturday. nbc news learned that the vice president told the firefighters union he is strongly considering a run for the democratic nomination. mean while the feud between donald trump and jeb bush is getting more personal. over the weekend trump jabbed bush about the role of his brother during 9/11. jeb bush fired back with this ad. >> trump says he quote always felt that i was in the military despite never serving in the military and draft deferments during vietnam. >> there is nobody bigger or better at the military than i. >> it looks as though -- mr.
trump talks about things that as though he still is on the apprentice. >> trump leads the gop presidential polls, bush is in the middle of the pack. the father of a chicago boy who accidentally shot and killed his 3-year-old brother has admitted to buying the gun illegally and showing the 6-year-old where it was hidden. michael santiago faces child endangerment charges. his son grabbed the gun and shot his brother in the face when they were playing cops and robbers. the boy died. community leaders say the tragedy is part of a growing problem in the city. >> you can't put a gun inside of the house. you cannot show a child a gun. that's the wrong thing to do. you are supposed to lock this up, put it away. >> he says he bought the gun to protect himself and his family after receiving death threats. >> the gunman wanted in connection with a deadly shooting at a zombie-themed street party has not been found.
a 20-year-old man died and four were injured in the early sunday morning shooting in ft. myers, florida. witnesses say the streets were chaotic there and it was hard to distinguish whether the shooting was real since most attendees were wearing halloween props. >> no one knew exactly where the shots came from so people were running towards it, against it, it was -- pretty chaotic i'd say. >> no word on whether the shooting was random or there was a possible motive. investigators in santa cruz, california will continue working to determine what caused a driver to plunge off of a pier last night, killing one man and leaving another in critical condition. witnesses spotted the white sedan driving erratically before the car went over the parking block and fell into the water below. >> tomorrow oscar pistorius, the olympian who shot and killed his girlfriend will be released from
prison. he will be free on parole one day short of one year behind bars for killing his girlfriend. pistorius testified that he shot her at his home on valentine's day because he thought she was an intruder locked in his bathroom. he was convingtd of manslaughter. pistorius was sentenced to five years in prison but became eligible for parole after 10 months. pistorius will spend the rest of his five-year sentence under house arrest at his uncle's home. >> we have new information on a legal case the u.s. prison at guantanamo bay cuba, a military judge could decide today if the trial of several 9/11 terror suspects can move forward. the suspects could get the death penalty if they are convicted. the judge halted the trial last year when a defense lawyer revealed the fbi had questioned members of his legal team. there are reports this morning of more deadly violence in the holy land. the latest wave involves a
palestinian gunman who shot nearly a dozen israelis before he was killed. the gun fire broke out at a bus station in southern israel. officials say the man stabbed an israeli soldier, then shot and killed another soldier and wounded 10 others with an automatic rifle before police gunned him down. israeli citizens are questioning why palestinians are lashing out in such numbers. >> do i need to live in a world where i'm afraid to leave home to work or go shopping. everything is frightening and i want the police to take more action and increase their security presence. >> the unrest erupted in jerusalem a month ago over tensionings around a holy site. >> 6:49. a minnesota college student created an app to help people who suffer from post traumatic stress disorder. he entered a programming contest and says he was inspired by his father's struggles with night
terrors as an iraq war veteran. they wrote code to create an app that tracks heart rate an movement. the goal is predict night terrors. >> we can find the exact symptoms of the onset of the panic attack, and try to use the watch or their android phone to disrupt that in order to take them out of the deep sleep but keep them asleep. >> the app earned the team top prize in the contest. now it still has to go through clinical trials but they hope to get it on the wrist of every veteran. victims is and survivors are honored with a peace garden in massachusetts. family members of victims survivors and first responders gathered to break ground on the project just one block from the home of krystle campbell, she was one of the four people killed by the bombs in april 2013, the new garden will have four plaques. the project is scheduled to be finished next year.
there will be a lot of focus on school buses this week. it's national school bus safety week. experts are making some demands when it comes to making sure children are safe. they want every bus to have longer stop arms and mounted cameras to encourage safe driving by everyone including bus drivers. the biggest problem other drivers. they commit more than 78,000 illegal passing violations in a day. experts say riding a school bus is still the safest way to transport a child to and from school. >> those big yellow vehicles, they are conspicuous, easy to see. and they are high, they have all of the kids up high out of the crash zone. it is the way to get kids to school if you want them to arrive safely. >> based on that survey up to 14 million moving violations could happen in the u.s. within just one school year. >> the buses don't have heaters

the blue mountain making snow through the night with temperatures in the 20s, you can make snow in most of the area this morning. look at chester springs and kennett square. even though it's above freezing in dover that's cold enough for frost. and temperatures in the 20s for mount holly, millville, atlantic city at the airport is 29 degrees. we will see sunshine, the coldest temperatures of the day, just after sunrise. so we'll see some sunshine and then it's going to take time to warm into the 50s. so to start with, at the bus stop, 30 degrees in the suburbs, 33 in the city. not a lot warmer on the buses. during the day today, you need sunglasses and a jacket. we should be in the upper 60s, it's not happening today. tomorrow, we'll be in the upper 60s near 70 in the afternoon. after a chilly warning at 42, the suburbs in the 30s.
