>> it's 4:30. this is "nbc 10 news today." i'm tracy davidson. >> i'm chris cato. let's begin with meteorologist bill henley and his first alert forecast. bill, yesterday was pretty rough on people's mums and the fall plants. >> the chill in the air, 55 was our high. if we hit that 70 this afternoon that would be up by 15. we're already seeing that this morning. it's 18 degrees warmer in mount holly. millville, 20 degrees warmer than yesterday and 22 degrees warmer in the pocono mountains. that being said it's still chilly in the 40s, 45 in allentown, mid-40s for trenton and northeast philadelphia and millville at 48. yesterday in the 20s. we'll see bright sunshine, clear skies to start with. 47 at 6:00. then the sunshine will start the warming process at 9:00, 50 degrees. we'll be in the 60s by lunch time and still climbing. go through the forecast neighborhood by neighborhood when i'm back in ten minutes. jessica boyington, though, watching the first alert traffic. >> and bill, we're watching some
ongoing construction which is what we deal with between the 4:00, 5:00, and 6:00 hour. things starting to clean up but still watching construction out in new jersey on the white horse pike, there is a traffic shift with that bridge work. so ongoing there. more construction as well on the vine street expressway. these are cameras from the schuylkill turned around facing the vine street expressway. vine now, as you can see with police activity on the scene blocking the entrance eastbound. that's closed until this morning. in between broad street and the schuylkill for right now. westbound lanes are open on the vine so no problems that way. a heads up for later on this evening. watch out for more stadium traffic, we have a flyers game later on tonight, philadelphia flyers versus dallas stars, that starts at 7:30 p.m. >> thanks. we continue to follow breaking news from philadelphia's kensington neighborhood. >> that's where police are on the scene of an early morning home invasion.
katy zachry is live on scene. what are you learning from police? >> reporter: there's a lot to this story. police say early this morning two masked men broke into this home we're focusing in on near the corner of allegheny and f street. they tied up two of the three people inside using cord and rope. they stabbed one of the victims in the process. the third person in the house was forced to drive the suspects to a atm machine where she withdrew money. the suspects forced her to drive back to the home. the woman started screaming. someone on the block heard her and called 911. >> they observed two males struggling with a female, one of the males was wearing gloves and a mask, and he had a hammer in his hand while he was struggling with this female who was
screaming. >> reporter: back out live, police tell us they did arrest one of the suspects when they drove up to the scene, the one who had the hammer. the other one drove away and the chief inspector who was out here not long ago say the one suspect who fled was last seen wearing all dark clothing. if you have information call east detectives who are investigating. live in kensington, katy zachry, "nbc 10 news." >> the family of brendan are finalizing funeral plans. he was found in the woods in camden county last week hours after he was reported missing. a private service for brendan is scheduled for thursday at blake doyle funeral home. investigators recently checked the cooper river, not far from where brendan was discovered but didn't find new evidence. >> 4:3 foufrmt. a family saying thank you since
an incident told the world they were homeless. nbc 10 was there as they provided dinner to michael and his family. they were in the spotlight after their 2-year-old was found walking alone and bare foot in love park. it turns out the family, they were kicked out of their home on friday, they had no place to stay so spent the night at the park when they fell asleep and the toddler wandered away. the story inspired a lot of people to offer help and chosen 300 ministry has raised $12,000 to provide housing for a year. >> i would have never thought it was people out here that would help us or organizations that were out there to help us. >> the family will stay in a hotel for a week before moving into that long term housing. >> 4:35. did you stay up to see the end of the game last night? >> i did not. but i saw the highlights when i got up. >> i did too. i was there in spirit with the

20 minutes before 5:00. it is chilly this morning but our skies are prime for sunshine. they are clear. we're going to see a big warm-up. we saw temperatures climb yesterday but only in the 50s. this morning we're getting a warmer start, we're up 13 degrees in northeast philadelphia, which gives us 46 degrees right now with a light wind out of the west-southwest, at 8 miles an hour. the southwest winds that are already with us this morning will stay with us this afternoon. that will help to warm us up. there are clouds to the north, they will skirt past the pocono mountains. most of the area is going to be in for plenty of sunshine and no sign of wet weather certainly not today. the forecast is calling for camelback to warm to 67. upper 60s for fleetwood and pennsburg and sunshine for new hope, bordentown, morristown, 70 degrees this afternoon. getting close to 70 in milford and millville.

divers found the man's body yesterday. and when wildlife officers spotted the 12-foot alligator in the same area they opened fire. the shooting happened just as an official was giving the local media an update on the situation. >> you hear a gun shot, that's because you're looking for the alligator and there is another one. >> investigators say the man was swimming with friends when they noticed he was missing. a medical examiner will determine whether the the alligator attacked the man or something else happened. >> the state of ohio is halting executions until 2017, because it can't find enough lethal drugs. the decision will create a back log of two dozen executions. ohio ran out of its supplies of its previous drug and has not been able to get new shipments. >> a medical examiner says a doctor with ties to south jersey died of an overdose in a manhattan apartment. the m.e.'s report shows that kiersten cerveny overdosed on
cocaine and alcohol. she was from gloucester county and worked in new york. police questioned two men including one thought to be her boyfriend. but neither is expected to face charges. health care enrollment under the affordable care act starts november 1. upgrades to the website may not be finished by then. two will improve the search for a doctor and tell you if your plan covers prescription drugs. a government spokesman says the upgrades when they determine that data provided by insurers is accurate. open enrollment from november 1 to january 31. >> former nba star lamar odom is transferring to a los angeles hospital to continue treatment after being found unresponsive at a legal brothel. he regained consciousness. sources tell e news he was taken off life support over the weekend, breathing on his own. doctors say he is able to move his arms and legs but will need a lot of rehab.
his estranged wife is making the trip to l.a. investigators will look into whether odom suffered a drug overdose while at the brothel. >> cosby covered up. someone stuck a sticker of kim joong yoon on top of a mural of bill cosby. a friends of the artist claiming responsibility says he removed the sticker late yesterday. he says regardless of the accusations against cosby, he remains a respected man. >> southern california is bracing for one of the strongest el ninos in years. forecasters say 18 years to be accurate. the los angeles area could get up to 200% more rainfall than average. el nino occurs when the eastern pacific ocean is unusually warm, warm enough to impact the atmosphere and change weather patterns. the region got a taste last week with flash floods and mudslides. officials are calling on people to take the forecast seriously and storm proof their homes and
businesses. a small grass fire in texas quickly got out of control near houston yesterday burning four homes and more than 700 acres. right now the fire is 80% contained. officials believe they narrowed down the cause of this one, a trailer filled with hay that blew a tire on a highway, they say the rim created sparks and that's how the fire started. there are no reports of injuries. if you are a fan of water slides and who isn't, here is a new one you've got to see. >> this slip and slide is 1,000 feet long. it opened up in jordan in the dead sea. records certified it as the longest slip and slide on the planet. it's part after campaign to boost tourism after so much unrest in the region. almost 11 minutes before 5:00. the temperatures with clear skies are coming down. look at that.
completely clear this morning, just a light breeze but a southwest breeze so the temperatures are running warmer, 48 degrees in philadelphia. that's a big warm-up compared to yesterday. you still need a jacket, even a chill is in the air but temperatures warm with bright sunshine at the shore. 44 in trenton, wilmington is 43 degrees. 43 in wrightstown. some of these numbers dropped into the 30s and 20s, turnersville at 45 as well. that's normal for this time of year to see 40s. and temperatures are going to stay in the warm zone for the next couple days. as rain stays away from us. it's just to the north. we've got high pressure that's going to keep us dry into the weekend. but we may not get through the weekend completely dry. today, sunshine and mild. upper 60s to low 70s. southwest winds to 15 miles an hour. tomorrow the warming trend continues. look at that. 74 after a morning low of 48.

around toll gate road. you can see a little bit of red. you head southbound all lanes blocked i wanted to confirm that before i said it. but all lanes blocked. they are forcing off all traffic around tollgate road. the best bet old bethlehem pike parallel to scene and jump on 309 that way. the vine street expressway as well, these are from the schuylkill. look toward the vine. the crew was in this area in here. blocking off all access to the vine street expressway eastbound in which earlier it was closed between broad street and the schuylkill. back open just watch out for crews in the area as they clean up. also in montgomery county, watch for an accident on cheltenham and coventry avenue. >> a new survey from the university of michigan finds many parents don't know how to find the emergency plan for their child's day care center or preschool. nearly 40% of parents surveyed said there was an emergency situation or power outage or lockdown at their child's school

the penn environment research and policy center's report highlights the proximity of fracking to places where there are a lot of children, senior citizens or sick people. the report will be released during an event later this morning at the college of physicians in philadelphia. decision 2016 now. a current candidate for the democratic presidential nomination could shake up the race later. jim webb's campaign says he is considering running for the white house as an independent. the former senator will discuss those plans later today. he said he felt like the democratic debate last week had been rigged in terms of who was going to get the most time on stage. >> on the republican side of things, donald trump now has his highest level of support in the polls since entering the race. a new nbc news/"wall street journal" poll shows 25% of gop primary voters support trump. ben carson a close second with
22%. last night in south carolina trump spoke about his new numbers. >> we're number one position and you have a lot of people that are not doing well in that poll. i'll have to -- a lot of zeros. zero. zero. >> we learned yesterday that the trump and carson campaigns requested secret service protection. a congressional advisory committee will determine if they get that. another potential shake-up coming soon. we'll see. vice president joe biden is reportedly nearing a position where he will enter the race. that decision could come midweek. however, one local congressman is convinced biden will run. representative brendan boyle of pennsylvania tweeted i have a very good source close to joe that tells me vp biden will run for prez. we reached out to boyle's spokesperson for a kmont on that tweet. we haven't heard back. >> today, former first daughter chelsea clinton will be in philadelphia, the visit is not linked to her mom's campaign.
chelsea will be in town to promote her new book called "it's your world get informed, get inspired and get going." she will speck with penn students and meet with kids at amy northwest middle school. >> a follow-up to a community home improvement story we shared with you last week. hundreds of hvolunteers to fix p several homes. the work was done by students, corporate volunteers and homeowners in a project called rebuilding together philadelphia. we returned to talk to the homeowners on north franklin street about the results. >> you come downstairs, you come from the outside and it's a whole new -- looks like a different place. it's nice. >> the volunteers took on a variety of projects including installing grab bars for elderly homeowners, vinyl flooring and painting and i in two days made repairs to 13 homes. >> camden is making a push to help small businesses.
