remember this video of a wedding party that turned into a brawl? this morning the verdict is in for the best man charged with assaulting police. >> and a cool start to the day. but we will warm near 60 just ahead hear what to expect for the weekend including that trick-or-treat forecast. good morning, this is "nbc 10 news today." i'm katy zachry. >> i'm vai sikahema. it's cooler this morning. i think it's going to lead into a nice weekend. our first alert forecast from meteorologist bill henley. bill? >> completely agree with you, temperatures definitely cooler. 10 degrees cooler in philadelphia. but look at south jersey. 24 degrees. in millville compared to yesterday and 20 degrees cooler in the pocono mountains. everybody is feeling the chill.
40s and 50s, wilmington is 48 degree, 51 in northeast philadelphia. and mount holly. a cool start, a sunny day. and the temperatures will be climbing though we won't reach the low 70s like yesterday. 50 at 6:00, 9:00, a little bit cooler and then the sunshine to warm us back in the middle 50s by lunch time. the temperatures will be climbing. go through the forecast, neighborhood by neighborhood when i'm back in ten minutes. jessica boyington has a look at your friday morning commute. >> we're in bordentown, new jersey right now off of the new jersey turnpike there is an accident inside the exit ramp off exit 7 around 206. reports of property damage right there and one toll lane blocked so watch for that if you're heading out the door off of the p.a. turnpike this morning, for -- these are 0 our cameras above the schuylkill expressway. just to show you the closures as you can see signs blocking off the ramp from the schuylkill into the vine street expressway that's closed this morning
between the schuylkill and broad street. wilt be there until about 5:00 a.m. you can see flashing lights and police activity there. they have been opening these closures a little bit early and ahead of schedule which is a good thing for travelers in the morning. 422, great through there, eight minutes eastbound from 29 to the schuylkill expressway, watch out for ongoing construction around route 100. >> thank you, jessica. it's all over the news here and across the country, headline after headline reporting teachers and students getting too close and having inappropriate relationships. that's why experts from several agencies are meeting today. >> that's right. the goal of the safe school summit to educate teachers and students and keep everyone safe. nbc 10's matt delucia is live in media to explain what we'll hear today. hi, matt. >> reporter: hi, katy and vai. the district attorney here tells me there is an issue around this area that needs to be addressed centers on inappropriate contact
with students. this morning at the summit they do this every year but this year it's focusing on how teachers should interact with students and how to avoid getting into something they should not. this is not just about what happens in the classroom but about social media, e-mail, text messages, michael colt tells me he doesn't want to have to worry about his three kids when they go to school. >> let the professionals in our criminal investigation department investigate it. we don't want to drag anyone's name through the mud but we want to investigate and make sure everything is on the up and up. >> reporter: there have been incidents here in delaware county in recent memory, the d.a. tells me students and parents should report inappropriate activity in the form of texts or contact, and the goal to ultimately tell the staff they can and will be investigated. live in media, delaware county, matt delucia, "nbc 10 news."
thank you. and new from overnight crews put out a fire at a newly constructed home in manayunk. this fire started about 2 1/2 hours ago, 2:00 this morning. it happened on the roof. no one was hurt. investigation into the cause of the fire is currently under way. >> happening today another familiar face is expected to testify for the defense in a fraud trial. fattah says he will call john street to the stand. he opened his case yesterday with testimony from former governor ed rendell. fattah says rendell and street hired him during campaigns. the defense believes the testimony legitimizes fattah's business. shocka fattah jr. is accused of bank and tax fraud. now he is the sochb congressman chalka fattah, married to nbc 10 anchor renee chenault-fattah.
>> a judge acquitted a best man accused of assaulting a police officer during a wedding brawl that happened in philadelphia. the acquittal of matthew sofit came after a three-hour non-jury trial. the brawl in october 2012 broke out after a post-wedding party. this video of the incident went viral. a guest charged in the brawl was sentenced to two years probation after pleading guilty to assault charges. >> a tip of the cap last night for some of philadelphia's finest. the fraternal order of police honored several officers for going beyond the call of duty and thanked the corporation for the family of sergeant wilson. wilson was killed during a robbery at a game stop in north philadelphia back in march. wilson was in full uniform when he went in the store to buy a gift for his young son. he died in the shoot-without two
men who walked in to rob the place. those two men are charged with murder. >> today a new link will open between philadelphia and lower merion. >> that's right. it's a bridge, this is exciting for walkers and cyclists across the schuylkill rifl. officials will gather for a ribbon kuth on the manayunk bridge. it has been closed forward three decades. it will reopen to pedestrians and bicycles, part of the circuit trails and connects the historic kinwood heritage trail with the schuylkill river trail. >> this is so exciting because philadelphia and lower merion are finally being reconnected as communities and it's bringing back a beautiful high quality public open space asset to the city and to its neighbor lower merion. >> the bridge is the hallmark of the circuit trail which will one day be 750 miles long. with a bridge opening about 350

scattered clouds at times but mostly it's sunshine. there are showers way to the north. doesn't look like those will be affecting us today or for halloween. mount pocono this afternoon, 50 degrees. 57 degrees in allentown. some spots will reach into the low 60s, get close to it like trenton, mount holly and norristown. sunny skies at the shore. 60 in atlantic city. vineland and dover warm into the upper 50s this afternoon. and philadelphia will see 60 while it's upper 50s for wilmington, so close and 58 degrees for narberth. the weekend, halloween, a real treat. nothing spooky about this. clear skies at 6:00, saturday 56, by 8:00 in the low 50s and for the late trick-or-treaters, our candy operation is shut down by that time, it will be 49 degrees at 10:00. >> you shut down your candy operation rather quick i think,
bill. that's the way it goes. sorry, kids. >> i bet it's good candy. >> i bet he gives out candy bars. we have an accident in bordentown. >> we're checking out the boulevard right around robert's avenue. what we like to see, we're almost into the weekend. no problem to the schuylkill expressway on the southbound side you'll get there fine. route 202 we're going to take a fly there. you can see everything is still in the green, we don't have increase in drive time, 11 minutes whether you're headed north or southbound from 30 to the schuylkill expressway but moving over to 202 watch out for construction right around naamans road that will be there until 5:00 a.m. so a half hour or so for that cleanup. and if you're heading out later this evening, around the stadium area watch out for the wells fargo center. the 76ers are playing. you can see extra volume around at that time. >> speaking of traffic, this may slow you down in wilmington. bridge repair work is under way
on i-495 it started around 8:00. there are lane closures to watch out for. and crews are shutting down the span over terminal avenue. they need to replace a broken bridge joint. the broken joint does not pose a danger to drivers. it will take about a month to get those repairs done. you may remember troubles in wilmington about a year and a half ago. the 495 bridge was shut down for months to fix support columns leaning. about 90,000 drivers use that bridge every day. parents know there is plenty of danger at the beach. in hawaii one family had to learn to expect the unexpected. >> it was way far away and then bite my leg. >> it was a shark, next, hear how the child escaped jaws with his life. >> meet the bionic boy. she all human but has a state-of-the-art appendage he
happening today, a wake for corey jones, he was shot and killed by a police officer in palm beach gardens, florida. jones pulled onto an interstate ramp waiting for a tow truck when a police officer out of uniform pulled over to investigate. the officer says jones had a gun so he shot him. the fbi is investigating. jones' funeral will be tomorrow. reverend al sharpton will give the eulogy. >> a north jersey man admitted to conspiring to support isis, 23-year-old pleaded guilty in court. his brother and two others were also charged. prosecutors say that sada brought a ticket for his brother to join isis. he faces up to 20 years in prison. his sentencing is set for february. a philadelphia mother charged with planning to join isis is scheduled to go on trial in june
of next year. she reportedly went by the nickname young lion ness ness. she allegedly bought plane tickets to join the group and posted support on twitter. >> we have new information about the canadian whale watching boat that capsized over the weekend killing five people. crews lifted the hull so the name of the it was clearly visible above the water line. they recovered electronic gear from the ship. canada's transportation safety board is continuing its investigation even though its crew left the scene. searchers will continue to look for a sixth passenger who has been missing since a wave toppled the boat over on sunday. >> officials have ordered more evacuations as the so called gibraltar fire continues in southern california. on the ground and from the sky crews are fighting the flames that are burning part of the los po dress national forest.
>> this morning we're hearing from a 10-year-old boy who was seriously hurt in a shark attack off the coast of hawaii. raymond was body boarding in oahu on wednesday when the shark bit him in the thigh. swimmers say he was about 60 yards offshore at the time. raymond says he was scared but that the pain wasn't that bad. >> shark come out of nowhere, then started kicking and dragging. >> raymond will continue to recover over the weekend and will return to school on monday. officials say shark warning signs have been posted in the area since the attack. a record number of sharks, many great whites are off the coast of california and scientists say it may be an indicator that el nino conditions are already hitting in the region. they say none of the animals have migrated the last two winters suggesting that perhaps the water temperatures are staying a bit warmer even a
slight rise in temperature means more food and more sharks staying put. >> glamour magazine has selected its women of the year and caitlyn jenner is among them. the magazine selected actress reese witherspoon for its cover, this is the 25th year glamour celebrated the achievements of diverse women in entertainment, fashion, politics and business. it hits the news stands november 10. caitlyn jenner is one of those pictured on the fold-out cover. the honor come less than a year after she came out as a transgender woman. >> among the others are five women touched by the south carolina church massacre. glamour women of the year will be honored at a gala november 9. >> this is the wow story of the morning. a young boy from delaware needed a hand literally. >> so he went to his local library and printed one out. seriously. colin was born with short fingers on his left hand.
he did research about 3d printers so he and his mom downloaded plans for an artificial working hand that used the wilmington library's free 3d printer to mold 24 parts over 12 hours. they put the pieces together and that's what they created, a working hand. >> i'll still be a righty, you can't really change that. yeah, i'll eventually i'll be able to work with them pretty much equally. >> so cute. now some penn state students are working on a special glove that will allow him to move each finger individually. about 10 minutes before 5:00. skies are going to be nice and clear. we'll see sunshine this morning, a few scattered clouds over center city and no sign of any rain. and no sign of the 60s that we had yesterday morning. we're solidly in the 50s in philadelphia but many suburbs are in the 40s so definite chill in the air.
brilliant sunshine at the sthor, nice and dry for cape may. showers are out of the picture for today. so is the warmer air we experienced yesterday. 50 in trenton and wrightstown, wilmington in the 40, chester down to 43 and west town now 39 degrees so definite chill in the air. those clouds at the shore, those will be moving out. sunshine will be nice and bright. the next round of cloud cover that's going to be arriving is moving into texas, oklahoma, and kansas. and that's producing wet weather and we could see some of those showers the first chances on sunday. but today i don't think that's going to happen. sunny skies, breezy, cooler. upper 50s and low 60s this afternoon. halloween looking good for halloween trick-or-treaters with the temple game 58 degrees after a morning temperature of 37. the evening temperatures on saturday will be in the 50s. then sunday, there is a slight chance of a shower but otherwise clouds and sunshine and pretty
nice weather for the als walk to defeat als at citizens bank park. that's 11:00 sunday morning. 66 degrees sunday afternoon. better chance we'll see scattered shower on monday but then by tuesday we're back to partly sunny skies and look at the 70s. for tuesday, wednesday and thursday. >> bill, the bearer of good news. looks like a great forecast. and the roads are looking maybe good. >> keeping your eye on the new jersey turnpike. >> right. we're looking at the new jersey turnpike not doing too great but in general the majors are okay. it's a friday morning we're typically lighter on fridays than we are for the rest of the week. but watch out in mansfield township we have word of a vehicle fire on the inner roadway northbound just south of the p.a. turnpike. it's blocking the right lane and the right-hand shoulder. and street road westbound to 95 northbound was closed for construction, you are good to go there. that has reopened this morning. and no problems on 95 from

from our delaware bureau, a new council is dedicated to state cyberspace security. governor jack markell signed an executive order. he says members will support efforts by the state department of technology and information to prevent detect and respond to cyber attacks. the council will be led by the chief information officer and consistent of 11 representatives of state agencies, universities,
and businesses. a new drug program has already saved more than 100 lives in our area. local police were honored for using the drug called narcan to reverse effects of a heroin overdose. police say they saved 135 lives in just under a year since officers began carrying narcan. delaware county was the first in the state to train and equip all officers with the life saving drug. police are hoping this second chance for some will help them turn their lives around. >> we'll continue to do this hopefully these people once we're able to bring them back from near death they can get the necessary help to move on with their lives. >> officials say right now heroin and oppose yod over doses are the leading cause of accidental death in the state. >> a local animal shelter is expanding and that means more room for pets looking for homes.
the board has completed a $1.5 million expansion of the camden county animal shelter in gloucester township. there is now room for another 30 dogs and 50 cats and also a new adoption wing. the expanded facility has a dedicated area where people can interact weekend adopt pets. and more space for cats and dogs to run around. they kept the comfort and the care of the animals in mind in the redesign. >> we have made so it we aring respectful to the animals, and they deserve that and we want them just to feel safe while they are in our home and then we can't wait to place them into loving families homes. >> the shelter will also offer educational programming on humane treatment of animals for school children as well as adults. love this story here. louisiana photographer is gaining nationwide attention for her photos. >> that's right. usually a photo bomb ruins pictures but in her case it turns them into something
magical and special. the special guest we're talking about in her photos is a deer named maggie. the photographer said she noticed the deer in the background of one of her pictures watching the photo shoot happen. then the deer walked up to the kids even the sleeping baby. now maggie is considered a regular appearing in more than five photo shoots. >> pretty amazing to look back at a picture and just that she cooperated not only participated and not something that was in the background but up so close and calm. >> the photographer there cities maggie is welcome in any of the pictures when she shows up. >> it's near the holiday season, you start getting pictures from everybody, family, friends and they sometimes send a news letter along with an explanation. they are going to have to explain who maggie is. >> you're watching "nbc 10 news today."
