>> rapidly changing conditions. look at this live picture, a dense fog advisory for areas north and west of philadelphia. visibility is down to near zero in some locations. chip kelly fired. the eagles grand experiment is over. eagles fans are chiming in about the coaching change. speaking of change, get ready to grab more if you -- cost of tolls going up in 2016. it's 4:30. this is "nbc 10 news today." i'm tracy davidson. let's get you updated on that fog with meteorologist sheena parveen. >> good morning. yes, we have a dense fog around this morning in part due to the rain we had yesterday morning. but we don't have the rain this morning, the good news is we are nice and dry. but that fog is pretty thick in some areas especially north and west of philadelphia, so this does include trenton around
i-95. 476 in montgomery county the major interstates through the lehigh valley, low visibility here and this is the case through the morning commute. i think it won't lift until the 9 or 10:00. visibility in allentown is quarter mile, as well as lancaster is zero in coatesville that is thick fog there, half mile visibility in reading, a quarter mile in trenton, the rest of the area, though, we have low clouds and some fog but it's not as dense as areas north and west. temperaturewise, we're in the 40s for most spots, 39 in allentown, 42 reading, 47 in philadelphia, 46 millville and wildwood so you probably want that light jacket at least when you step out this morning. through the afternoon, though, we'll be mild around the mid-50s well above normal for this time of the year. 7:00 this morning around 46 degrees, areas of dense fog especially north and west, 9:00, 47 degrees and by 11:00 a.m. temperature around 50 degrees and cloudy. then later tonight we'll see rain moving in so we'll talk more about that coming up. for now a check on the roadways with jessica boyington.
>> we're out in new jersey, south jersey around route 73 and the new jersey turnpike, these cars here are exiting off to the new jersey turnpike. you can see no problem there is or no problems north or south on route 73 at this time. we're also watching still in new jersey on -- in florence township for a disabled tractor-trailer. not tying things up too badly. no delay on 295 but around columbus road at exit 52 blocking out the left lane. watching that construction on the vine street expressway, that's closed east and westbound right now between the schuylkill and broad street. that will be until 5:00 this morning. >> it's 4:32. the eagles grand parent is over. kelly came aboard in 2013. he had two winning seasons, one playoff game, this year kelly got full control of the eagles roster but the birds failed to make the postseason after changes that drained the team of its best players. and now eagles fans are wondering what's next?
and how long will it take for the team to rebuild? there is no shortage of opinions matt delucia is live outside a diner with reaction. >> reporter: last night and this morning people are talking about chip kelly's firing. you look at the front page of the daily news today, good-bye mr. chip. a lot of people saying that they expected this to come but perhaps not so soon. we talked with people last night as this news was first coming down. chip kelly of course went 6-9, after making a host of big changes in the off season. that has not been sitting well with the fans who just a few days ago they were still hopeful there was a chance to win the nfc east but that is the no more and now chip kelly is gone. he didn't even get to finish his third season with the eagles. during those three seasons, he took control of personnel, traded some well known and proven athletes and in the end not much to show for it. yes, we talked with fans last night after that word came down from the front office.
>> thought it was a move a little premature. >> was not expecting it. get a new coach in gear as fast as possible and just make the right things happen. >> small little things, small changes to make the big picture happen. >> reporter: so a lot of people surprised that it happened this soon, and some people very happy that this is happening as well, getting more reaction from fans throughout the morning at the melrose diner as people come out here, grab a cup of coffee, get breakfast and of course, spout off and vent about this latest move and of course we're expecting to hear more from the eagles owner jeffrey lurie later on today. he is going to hold a news conference to discuss more about chip kelly's firing and the next steps for the eagles and a lot of people anxiously awaiting to hear what's going to happen next. hopefully a winning season on the way. live in south philadelphia, i'm matt delucia, "nbc 10 news." fans flooded sports talk
radio last night, many said now was the right time for a change. listen. >> the shock in the way it happened but it was kind of an option that was on the table for the eagles after they were redressed under chip kelly. >> i think it was a relief and i don't think it was a shock and people, are they dancing in the streets, yeah, i think most of them if you watch the way the eagles played football this year, and the product that they put on the field. >> news of chip kelly's firing lit up social media. some current and former players weighed in. defensive end vinny curry wrote watching nfl network. now that the eagles made the move will jerry jones and the mara family follow with their decision, and nfc east was a disaster all year. and former lineman had some fun saying so does chip getting fired mean the eagles will call me tomorrow or never again? vote now. here's a sign of how quickly the

good morning. no rain for the morning commute today so that's the good news. but now we have fog out there. so, dense fog north and west of philadelphia this morning. this will be the case i think as we go through the rest of the morning commute. and then clearing around 9, 10:00. late showers today, too, that won't be anything until after the evening commute. and some lasting overnight. temperatures will be dropping into the 40s. here is a look at dense fog. 3/4 mile visibility in reading, a quarter in lancaster and allentown, even trenton, zero mile visibility in coatesville, this is very dense fog. you want to take it slower on the roadways, we expect this to be around for several hours. five mile visibility in philadelphia, four in millville and half mile in dover. so dover starting to pick up dense fog there as well.
temperatures are mostly in the 40s, 39 in allentown, mid 30s in the poconos, 43 pottstown, 47 in philadelphia. mid-40s for much of south jersey and delaware, so you'll want the jacket when you head out this morning but this afternoon we will be back into the mid-50s. no rain around, this is satellite and radar, but you notice all of the clouds, the brightest color clouds north and west showing us areas where we have the fog around too. here we go with future weather, hour by hour, as we go through the middle of the day. we're looking dry, the clouds are going to be locked in. this is noon. then evening commute looks fairly dry. 8, 9:00, that's when we expect rain to move in. lasting in some areas overnight. then clearing up for your thursday, that's new year's eve. looking pretty good. even as we go through thursday night into new year, we're looking at midnight, 1:00 now going into 2016, nice and dry, any fireworks outside i think will be fine. for today, early fog around, then late rain, temperature of 54 to 57, still fairly mild.

coverage of chip killy's firing. a lot of eagle fans and sports reporters are asking how fast can the birds recover from this? and field a winning team. some call it three and out. the eagles released chip kelly after three seasons. ray diddinger of comcast sportsnet wrote the book on the eagles called the eagles encyclopedia. his title for a future chapter on chip kelly a failed experiment. >> pretty much have to reshape and rethink the organization top to bottom. you don't do that overnight. for better or worse, it appears it's worse, chip kelly has reshaped this franchise in his image and you take him out and you bring another coach in, they are going to have to rebuild it all over again. >> he said that could take years and involve a new round of dramatic roster moves. >> we're getting comments on our facebook page. to this question, did the eagles make the right decision on chip kelly? one viewer said yes, he had no
one to blame but himself, he destroyed the team he was given. another said this. yes, but the owner does not know what he is doing either. you can become part of the conversation, go to our nbc 10 facebook page and post your comments. count on nbc 10 and our nbc 10 mobile app for complete coverage and reaction to chip kelly's firing. it's 4:45. in other news, new information about damage claims from the military surveillance balloon that got loose last october. remember that. the balloon drifted more than 100 miles before crashing in central pennsylvania. now about a dozen people have filed more than $300,000 in claims against the army. those people say the run away balloon damaged their property. the army will be reviewing the claims. happening today, one of six american military members killed in afghanistan last week will be laid to rest. detective joseph lemm was killed in a suicide bombing outside
bagram air base. he was a member of the new york city police department and the international guard. he was deployed three times. detective lemm leaves a wife and two children. now one of the other service members killed was from montgomery county. air force staff sergeant peter taub was the father of a 3-year-old girl with another child on the way. new information on plan to build a memorial to the victims of the market street building collapse. philadelphia officials hope to complete it by next year's third anniversary of the tragedy. the city announced yesterday it signed agreement to release $700,000 for construction of the memorial at 22nd and market. these renderings show what the memorial park will look like. it was june 5, 2013, that a building under construction collapsed onto the salvation army thrift store killing six people and injuring 14 others. in october philadelphia jury found the demolition contractor
griven campbell guilty of involuntary manslaughter. shawn took a plea deal. >> two dogs rescued from the rubble of their home two days after deadly tornados passed through north texas. the owners had no hope of finding their dogs when they returned to their devastated home to salvage personal items monday. and then they heard one of the dogs barking. the family started digging and found the pet. >> i had not been able to sleep these past few nights thinking and then the rain and the cold. i just ran. >> four hours after that reunion the family found the other dog under a pile of debris, oth animals dirty, banged up but they are going to be fine. well, we're not dealing with the rain but we're dealing with the fog.
dense fog especially areas north and west, this is going to last i think through most of the morning commute. then we'll have showers moving in later on today. mostly tonight. then we go into 2016 and it will be a colder start to the new year with temperatures dropping about 10 degrees from new year's eve to new year's day. right now the fog is confined to the lehigh valley including trenton, visibility there quarter mile as well as lancaster and allentown very low visibility. coatesville at zero, 3/4 mile visibility in reading. philadelphia not too bad at five. dover drop dound to a quarter mile so some dense fog there. as we go through the day today the temperature trent won't be moving high this morning. we'll be staying right around the mid-40s by 9:00 a.m. by 1:00 p.m. temperatures in the low 50s, mid-50s later on this afternoon. so a fairly mild when you consider where we should be this time of the year. temperature right now 47 degrees in philadelphia. 39 in allentown, 42 reading.
mid-40s for much of south jersey and delaware. we are dry on satellite and radar. we have clouds locked in and here's future weather, it's going to keep the clouds locked in through the day today. so mostly cloudy, this is at noon, then we go into the evening, fairly dry. the rain shouldn't move in until close to 8, 9:00. but there you see some spots, heavy rain moving through, clearing for tomorrow morning. so tomorrow morning commute should be dry. could see some areas of fog around early tomorrow morning. but i think tomorrow should be pretty nice day. then we go into tomorrow night into friday. this is 1:00 a.m. looking at new year's eve into new year's day and it looks pretty good for fireworks or anything that any one has going on. today early fog, then we're looking at late rain, temperature from 54 to 57 degrees. temperatures for thursday will be down to around 50 degrees, mid-40s as we go into friday. low 40s for the first weekend of 2016. with nice sunny conditions. >> we have a network of cameras
monitoring the fog. throughout the area. jessica boyington is watching the roads including the schuylkill expressway. >> right. the schuylkill expressway, runs into the vine street expressway so we also usually see this off ramp closed from the schuylkill around the vine at this time of morning. part of the vine street expressway is open to traffic right now, we usually have it closed in5:00. in between broad and the schuylkill but we still have police activity and closures on this off ramp here. so we'll keep you updated on that when it's completely open but for now we still have ramps closed. the rest of the commute there are traffic lights out at the bottom of the ramp from the schuylkill westbound headed to city avenue right now so. use caution. holiday travel, we're dealing with the modified schedule for septa. buses running on a modified week day schedule. new year's day on a sunday schedule. >> you have to pay more to drive the pennsylvania turnpike in
just a few days. tolls are increasing by 6% in 2016. the higher rates go into effect sunday. the hike is largely to repay loans that helped pay for road projects. similar increases are expected every year until 2044. >> in lower mayfield bucks county the first step after $370 million scudder falls bridge improvement. monday crews start removing trees, brush and debris between route 332 and taylorsville road interchanges in preparation for the installation of noise red e reducing walls on the approach to the bridge. that construction is scheduled to begin in the spring. 9 minutes before 5:00. in a few hours we'll hear from the man who fired eagles head coach chip kelly. jeffrey lurie will address fans at noon. hear from fans about the sudden coaching change. also next, hospital closing, find out what that means for hundreds of workers at st. joseph's hospital.

week in tv ads in the early voting states of iowa, new hampshire and south carolina. and george pataki is out of the race for president. the former new york governor suspended his campaign yesterday, his polling numbers never rose above single digits >> yesterday govern tom wolf detoed parts of the gop backed spending bill on his desk. he freed up billions in emergency funding for pennsylvania schools and social services. the bill resemble add republican budget plan that the govern stree toed in june. yesterday the governor accused lawmakers leaving town before they finished their job. >> i am expressing the outrage that all of us pennsylvanians should feel about the garbage that republican legislative leaders have tried to dump on us. >> republican leaders in both houses say they are read the resume bipartisan budget talks. this is pennsylvania's longest budget stalemate in modern history. >> from our delaware bureau,
hundreds of dupont employees will be out of a job by the spring. dupont's ceo sent e-mail to the company's employees telling them about 1700 at the wilmington plant will lose their jobs to help cut cost before a planned merger. dupont and dow say this will give more value to shareholders and make the companies leaner once they merge. >> i live in delaware, i will be unhappy if they left. on the other hand, a shareholder of dupont is not that interested where they are as long as they make profits and returns. >> dow and dupont plan to split into three companies. the smallest would be based in delaware. another major employer in the area announced it's laying off workers. north philadelphia health system plans to close st. joseph's hospital in fair mount and consolidate operations into the girard medical center. the plan would result in up to 675 workers getting laid off at
st. joseph's by next spring. employees are in shock. >> been here so long, raised up with, now a shut down or you know, they are going to do something to it. we're not going to be here kjoñ anymore. with that in mind, now you just think about what's the next step. >> the pennsylvania department of human services tells us it's working closely with the health system to ensure a safe and orderly transition. >> now from our jersey shore bureau. a business man answered a local church's prayers after crime became a concern at its current locations. the city of hope worship center in atlantic city is getting a new home. because their pastor saw a ad asking buyers to name their price for land. he called the owner a retired jewish man and explained the church's problem. >> i just got out of church and he said the land is yours. >> i might as well do some good.
