that's playing out as we speak. they've brought in a giant crane to help free 17 miners who have been trapped all night underneath the cayuga salt mine. they're planning to lower a basket down to lift out the miners two or three at a time. the 17 miners became trapped about 10:20 last night when they were headed down to the mine. 2,300 feet below ground, starting their shift. the mine operator cargill says none of the trapped miners is injured and rescuers have been able to lower down water, heat packs and blankets to them. unclear how long it might take to lift them all to safety. the mine has been operating since 1922. it processes 2 million tons of road salt each year. guys, back to you. >> we'll keep an eye on that. tom costello, thank you. bad news if you were hoping to wake up this morning as the nation's newest
multi-millionaire. there was no powerball jackpot winner last night. the $500 million plus rolls over into saturday night. it's going to get crazy good on saturday. nbc's kerry sanders is back on powerball watch again. kerry, good morning. >> good morning. if you're waking up this morning and you got to go to work and you're sad, maybe this will cheer you up. take a look at how much larger the jackpot is when they do the it on saturday. before you take your tickets and rip them up before you lost, look at the numbers that were pulled last night. this would have been a record jackpot at $550 million. it would have been the fourth largest jackpot. there was at least one winner. somebody got $1 million on their ticket in the houston area. here are the numbers again. the powerball numbers are 2, 11, 47, 62, 63 and that powerball
number was 17. no winners there. the ticket buying frenzy will get crazier. yesterday, when the ticket value of the jackpot was going to be $550 million, they were selling more than 1,300 tickets a second. a tremendous number of tickets being sold. now it's $675 million. consider this, guys, that is more than the budgets of some tiny nations. it's a lot of money. >> well put, kerry. it's a lot of money. thank you very much. let's move to politics now. in the presidential race, donald trump is escalating his attacks on republican rival ted cruz, reiterating questions about the texas senator's eligibility to run for president. another prominent republican is suggesting the issue is worth looking into. peter alexander has the latest. good morning. >> savannah, good morning. wait until you hear who is siding with donald trump on this
one. it's senator john mccain. trump says he doesn't want to undermine ted cruz. this morning, praising him on twitter for renouncing his canadian citizenship 18 months ago. but cruz is accusing trump of simply trying to distract from the real issues in the race by making political noise. >> are you ready? >> reporter: donald trump trying to find out whether ted cruz, born in canada, is allowed to be president of the u.s. >> how do you run against a democrat, whoever it may be, and you have this over your head, if they bring a lawsuit. >> reporter: cruz dismissed his concerns. >> the laws of the united states are straight forward. the very first congress defined it as a natural born citizen. >> reporter: trump is finding an unlikely ally in john mccain. >> he's not a war hero. >> war hero. >> because he was captured. >> reporter: the party's 2008 nominee, born in the panama
canal zone, a u.s. territory. >> it's different from being born on foreign soil. i think there is a question. i am not a constitutional scholar, but i think it's worth looking into. i don't think it's illegitimate to look into it. >> reporter: while trump dominates nationally, a former chairman tells nbc news, now, the hawkeye state looks like it's cruz's to lose. trump is also accusing his rival of being a copycat on immigration. this cruz ad hit the air. >> it'd be different if bankers were crossing the rio grande. we will build a wall that works. >> politicians don't know how to build the wall or anything. i'll build a wall. >> reporter: marco rubio is redefining boots on the ground. mocked for this. a vote for marco rubio is a vote for men's boots. carly fiorina calling him out.
yeah, marco rubio, but can you rock these? i wore my loafers this morning. trump's next rally is in burlington, vermont, home to bernie sanders. local police there are seriously concerned about over ticketing. the campaign issued about 20,000 tickets to a 1,400 seat venue. the residents being warned to expect overflow demonstrations in the streets. matt and savannah? >> peter alexander, thank you. >> does it come down to shoes? one man who didn't get into the presidential race, vice president joe biden. now, he is expressing some regret over that decision. nbc's senior white house correspondent chris jansing has that part of the story. good morning. >> good morning, matt. joe biden has always been a politician who wears his heart on his sleeve. more than two months after he stood here in the rose garden, president obama, at his side, to announce he would not run for
president. biden says candidly, he wishes things were different. >> sure, i regret it every day, but it was the right decision for my family and for me. and i plan on staying deeply involved. we've got two good candidates. >> that decision was made with his head, not his heart, following the death of his son beau. he concluded it was too late to mount a challenge to hillary clinton and bernie sanders. at 73, this would have been biden's last shot at his lifelong dream of becoming president. he said the democratic primary now is, quote, what i expected. matt and savannah? >> chris, thanks very much. president obama is giving us a rare sneak preview of what we can expect to hear during his final state of the union address next tuesday. >> what i want to focus on in this state of the union address, not just the remarkable progress we've made, not just what i want to get done in the year ahead,
but what we all need to do together in the years to come. the big things that will guarantee an even stronger, better, more prosperous america for our kids. >> presidential aids described it as nontraditional, taking a big picture approach to the challenges facing our country. we'll talk to the president about that address and other issues facing him in his final year in office when we take our entire show to the white house next tuesday. vice president joe biden is also going to join us live. another hot button issue in washington on the campaign trail and internationally, north korea's claim of a successful hydrogen bomb test. u.s. officials are casting doubt this morning, but it has reignited concerns about that nation's military advances. andrea mitchell is following this story again for us. good morning. >> good morning, savannah. the u.s. says north korea's nuclear test is a grave test. even though the white house doubts it actually tested a hydrogen bomb. even if pyongyang is bluffing,
there's no stopping north korea's unpredictable young leader. >> reporter: he is young, untested and has his finger on the nuclear button. kim jong-un, commander in chief of a million man army, missiles and a nuclear arsenal. for the fourth time, testing a nuclear bomb, and setting off a political explosion from republican candidates. >> we have this madman over there who probably would use it, and nobody talks to him other than dennis rodman. >> he's a lunatic, and he's dangerous. this administration has done nothing about it. >> this underscores the gravity of the threats we are facing right now, and also the sheer folly of the obama-clinton foreign policy. >> reporter: was it an intelligence failure? u.s. satellites spotted suspi o suspicious funnels.
>> what's important is not that only the world take action, but china take action. >> has the administration put enough pressure on china? >> we've put a considerable amount of pressure on china. it appears we may need more. >> reporter: more talks than action. if diplomacy doesn't work, is there a military option? the u.s. has 28,500 troops in south korea. 54,000 more troops in the region, including the uss ronald reagan aircraft strike group. and an air force base on okinawa. >> nothing has slowed kim jong-un's drive for nuclear weapons. experts say he's trying to build the most modern, survivable and lethal arsenal he can. an incident at a police station in paris involving a man armed with a knife. it's being investigated as potential terrorism. let's go to kelly cobiella. what are you hearing?
>> this happened just in the past couple of hours at a police station in northern paris. you'll remember today is the anniversary of the "charlie hebdo" attacks, and there were commemorations happening in relation to that anniversary. what we understand, and a lot of this is unconfirmed at this point, is a man with a knife entered this police station in northern paris. there are unconfirmed reports there were wires extending from his clothing and he may have had some sort of suicide belt on. also, unconfirmed reports by nbc news that he shouted before brandishing this knife. a lot of this still coming in, still developing. he was shot and killed at that police station in that neighborhood in northern paris, which has been locked down as police investigate. again, savannah, a lot of these details about whether or not there was, in fact, a suicide vest, and whether or not this was a potentialter ru terrorist attack, still unconfirmed.
we'll let you know as we hear more. savannah? >> kelly cobiella, thank you. let's turn to a round of dangerous el nino powered storms wreak wreaking havoc across california. nbc national correspondent miguel almaguer, a few miles north of los angeles this morning. what can you tell us? >> matt, good morning. the l.a. river has dipped a bit, but it's been surging for days. for so many yehere, it's been t much water, too quickly. >> reporter: overnight, more rain, another washout. this, the latest in a series of storms fueled by el nino. homes aresubmerged. this professor wading through class. the lesson goes on. where there was fires days ago, there are now torre ents of mud.
voluntary evacuations downhill, where homes could be buried in landslides. >> we've done a lot of preparation. there's a whole bunch of sandbags around the house. >> reporter: with 19 million bracing for flash flooding, the warm waters from el nino are contributing to a conveyer belt of storms. slamming california one after another. in the northern part of the state, the forecast calls for 15 inches in 16 days. after years of dry conditions, california is now seeing tornado warnings, funnel clouds and mudslides. like the mounting damage, this morning, more rain is coming. >> and it's not just rain. we're seeing feet of snow in the mountains. this nasty weather should taper off later on today. guys, it'll be right back here later on this weekend. >> miguel, thank you very much. if you're trying to eat healthier in the new year, the u.s. government is out with new dietary guidelines.

case. now, school officials are calling off the rest of that team's season, as parents of the alleged victims demand further action. >> reporter: a season cancelled and a community in crisis. three tennessee high school students are facing charges of aggravated rape and aggravated assault for brutal, alleged attacks on teammates during a hazing ritual. according to members of the ooltewah high school basketball team, four underclassman players were physically assaulted on december 22nd in a cabin where the team was staying during a tournament. one of those students, according to the victim report, was also sexually assaulted with a pool cue, receiving worse treatment because he spoke up to three of the players carrying out the attacks. the alleged attackers, two cough moth -- sophomores and one senior, have been kicked off the team, is suspended from school and charged. two are in custody. the freshman victim was released from the hospital after surgery
and eight days of treatment. he's left the school. in a meeting wednesday night, hamilton county superintendent rick smith cancelled the basketball season. >> i'm extremely limited in what i can say or communicate public i. i am heartbroken about this. >> reporter: more students are speaking out. four students telling investigators the incident was not isolated. part of a standing tradition called beating in. alleging previous hazing also occurred in the locker rooms on campus with the lights off. the alleged rape victims family calling for the coach to be fired. other students say the ritual existed before he was coach. the coach's attorney now denying those claims of a hazing culture. telling nbc affiliate wrcb, the issue affecting our community is not haziing or bullying. rather, it is the unilateral decision of three individuals currently charged with a sexual

criminal investigation. tom costello has been looking into it. >> the fda and u.s. attorney's office will not say what potential criminal matter the grand jury is investigating. it centers on a case in simi valley last summer, before a strick of outbreaks that has since sickened hundreds. >> reporter: more bad news for a once favorite fast food chain, struggling through an unprecedented series of food born illnesses. chipotle announcing a grand jury subpoenaed documents relating to a norovirus outbreak last summer in simi valley, california. 207 people were sickened and some hospitalized. the victim attorney, bill marler. >> severe stomach cramps, diarrhea. sometimes they need medical attention for rehydration. >> reporter: while a grand jury is looking into that outbreak, hundreds of others have been sickened in unrelated chipotle cases. including 5 people in nine

kelly cobiella is in london with more. good morning. >> good morning, natalie. at the mayor's office in the paris district, they're confirming a man armed with a knife tried to break into a police station in northern paris, shouting allahu akbar, and was shot and killed. it happened at noon today around popular tourist sites. there's a heavy police presence and two schools were put into lockdown as a precaution. police thought they saw wires from the man's jacket, possibly signs of a suicide belt. they sent in a remote device to inspect the body. the explosives were fake. all of this coming on the one-year anniversary of the "charlie hebdo" attacks. in fact, the french president and interior minister were both at a small commemoration with family members of the victims this morning when it happened. natalie, we understand the attack involved only one man and
no one else was injured. natalie? >> kelly cobiella in london, thank you. after an all night operation, rescuers in upstate new york began pulling trapped salt miners to safety this morning. 17 men were stuck in an elevator 900 feet below group ground. the men were cold but not injured. rescuers sent water and heat packs to the miners until they were hoisted to safety. if you're getting on a plane, listen up. a driver's license will no longer be accepted as a form of id when getting on a domestic commercial flight from five u.s. states. illinois, minnesota, missouri, new mexico and washington state. the reason those five states have been ruled non-compliant under the real id act passed ten years ago, which outlines stricter standards for state-issued ids given by the government. in those states, you will also need a passport. to more on something we touched on earlier.
updated dietary guidelines being released by federal regulators. nbc news's medical contributor is here with what you need to know about the recommendations. natalie, good morning. >> good morning. >> the headline here, of course, significant changes. for the first time, the committee is giving you a number for sugar. >> important distinction is this is added sugar. not the natural sugars from fruit. what they're saying is your added sugar should be no more than 10% of your daily caloric intake. if you have an average diet of 2,000 calories a day, that would equal 200 calories from sugar. what does that mean? it's going to be roughly 12 sea spoons of sugar, as much as would fit into this bowl. let translate that into actual food. a can of soda. a regular san of soda. you know the fun sized candy bars at home? the recrectangles? >> one can of soda and one of those is the added amount allowed.
beverages, right, sodas and also processed food contain a lot of added sugar. >> certainly. also, they dropped some of the recommendations on cholesterol. what does this mean when it comes to buttery, meats, things we consume? >> we talked about this last year when the draft recommendation was first released. we know dietary ccholesterol, like in an egg, doesn't affect your cholesterol level in the majority of people. eggs are healthy foods. foods that may contain cholesterol don't have a lot of saturated fat, like eggs, so it's okay to eat. you want to limit the saturated fat to 10%, but the cholesterol, you don't have to worry so much about. >> watch what you eat is what it comes down to. >> across the board. >> thank you. a driver who is lucky to be

research and found that about half of all people say, they're too scared to ask. 15% said that they're afraid they're going to be fired if they ask. they also asked employers the question. do you know what percent of employers said they'd fire people for asking for a raise? zero. if you don't ask, you don't get. >> there is a right way and a wrong way to go about it. >> absolutely right. the right way to ask is to know what you're worth before you go in and ask the question. go to a website called glass door.com, where you can figure out what somebody with your skills, your experience, should be paid, and then go in with a list. on paper, not your phone. on paper, these are the things i've done for the company. these are the doors i've opened. this is the business i've brought in. this is the money that i've saved you. i deserve it is not a reason to get a raise. you have to actually list what you've done for them. leave it behind so they can review it. and if they tell you the timing

live theater. we rehearsed all day, these meticulous, complex shots. >> like a live production. >> it was like live production, like doing "saturday night live," except what we were doing wasn't that funny. >> or fun. >> right. >> reporter: in his new film, leonardo dicaprio plays hugh glass, an explorer across the wilderness and his quest for revenge against a fellow explorer. he endures sub zero temperatures, unforgiving elements. in one of the film's most talked about scenes, a vicious bear attack. it was shot on location far from the comforts of a hollywood studio. what you see on screen is raw and, oftentimes, real. >> was there ever a moment when you thought, why did i do this? why did i sign up for this? >> literally, everyone felt that a few times a week, yes. i'm not going to lie, it was one
of the -- it was probably the hardest, you know, films, professional things, i've ever done, for sure. >> one of the things you do in the film is actually eat a real bison liver. i wanted to believe that that was a prop, but it was real. why did you push yourself to do that? it's not like anybody would think, boy, what a lazy performance. you take that extra step. why? >> the native american actor that i was working with, hisart eating raw bison flesh during rehearsal. they gave me this pancake thing to eat but it didn't look authentic to me. i wanted the real thing. it was this giant liver that was incredibly disgusting. my reaction is very much up on screen, which is a nauseating one. >> fair to say, you've had your last bison liver? >> i'll never do that again. never do that again. >> there's another scene where
you crawl inside the carcass of a horse. i just kept thinking about the theme of will to live. watching this film, there were ten times i would have just said, forget it. i'll lay down and give up. how did you tap into that in your character, that absolute relentless will to live? >> when i watched this movie for the first time, i said, my god, the perseverance of the human species, our adaptability, the ability of life to keep pushing forward in all adversity is amazing. it's kind of displayed in this movie in a way i haven't seen in a while. because we were trying our closest to emulate these people's journeys. >> did you actually crawl inside the horse carcass, or please tell me there was a set piece. >> yeah, there was a set pete. >> thank you. i don't think i could take it. >> reporter: something that wasn't a set piece, dicaprio's
beard. >> how long did it take to grow? >> four months or five months. but then i kept it for like a year and a half. i lived with that thing for a long time. >> seems to take on a life of its own. >> it became like a partner, like a life partner. >> reporter: now, all eyes are on dicaprio's chances during this year's award season. >> got to get off this boat. >> reporter: at this weekend's golden globes, he's nominated for best performance by an actor in a motion picture drama, a category he won in 2005 for "the aviator." for the elusive oscar statue, this year, he's considered a front runner. >> i'm very proud that a movie like this got made. it's very, very, very rare to see films that are this ambitious coming out of the hollywood studio system. so i'm sort of on a tirade, trying to promote this because i want to see more films like this out there, as a fan of movies. but as far as awards are
concerned, the truth is, there's a lot of peace of mind in it because you really realize that you ultimately have no control over these things. >> is it something you hope for or set off to the side? >> like i said, you know, honestly, i do these movies because i really love movies and i want to make great movies. all that is totally, totally beyond your control. it really is. >> i'll see you at the golden globes. do you have your outfit? >> i have no idea what i'm wearing. probably the same boring black suit, as always. >> me, too. boring black dress. see you there. >> all right. >> we did the deep conversation and then i'm like, what are you wearing? >> they did the bison eating liver just once. >> one taker. >> it's incredible. don't you agree? >> riveting. he throws himself 110% into the role. >> all of them did. >> unbelievable. >> it is gory. a lot of, particularly, women, i

do present clips of all the nominated movies. she was supposed to come up and read the nominees off one last time, and then open the envelope and announce the winner. she started opening the envelope before reading off the nominees. everyone thought she was going to announce the winner prematurely. dick clark had to explain to her what to do. then she announced. >> in her defense, you know from doing the live shows, unless you do this, you have to know to go out there. there's an order and it's not easy to get it right. >> it's unpredictable. not easy. >> not at all. >> remember the golden globes when there was no golden globes? >> oh, do i remember. i was on nbc with billy bush and nancy odell, nbc special, where we announced the winners and did commentary. it wasn't the highest rated golden globes. >> it was a writers strike. >> the writers strike killed the golden globes. none of the stars were going to show up. instead, they had this press conference thing where some entertainment reporters read off
the winners. as i said, nbc did a special. here's what i hate, this was the only time jon hamm won a golden globe for "mad men," and there was no ceremony for him to show up to and make a speech. the golden globes never give it to you unless you're a new show. >> jodie foster and her speech two years ago, she won the life achievement award. she's so private so we didn't know what she was going to talk about. she was revealing and personal. she had a brilliant moment. you felt like she was going to come out, i am loud and proud, i am single! everybody started laughing. she directed a movie since with george clooney and julia roberts this summer "money monster." she hasn't retired, but hasn't acted. >> still in the business. >> we love her. >> maybe one of ricky gervais's opening monologue moments will
