granted. >> hillary clinton wins big in south carolina giving the democratic presidential candidate a decisive boost heading into the super tuesday contest. nbc 10's drew smith is live in the studio with more on clinton's win. it was a big one for her, drew. >> it was, katy. south carolina handed a delegate lead and momentum days before the contest this week. take a look at results from south carolina. 74 for clinton, sanders with 26, a 3-1 margin. exit poll data shows clinton got a huge boost of african-american voters. she did not focus on sanders in her speech last night. instead secretary of state called out donald trump. >> despite what you hear, we don't need to make america great again, america has never stopped being great. but we do need to make america

whole again. instead of building walls, we need to be tearing down barriers. >> bernie sanders congratulated clpt on her win but said the campaign is just beginning. he will have to do well in several states tuesday to keep his presidential hopes alive. you'll hear from him at 10:30. drew smith, nbc 10. >> thank you, drew. voters stood by their candidates by rallying yesterday. event organizers say sanders platform should appeal to people in major cities like philadelphia. they touted his plan for $15 hour minimum wage, free college tuition and single payer health care. the rally included union members, clergy leaders, students and veterans. we also reached out to hillary clinton's camp. a representative responded with a quote from former philadelphia mayor michael nutter. he noted clinton's strong backing and wide support

throughout the city. intensity is building among republicans running for the white house. front-runner donald trump is looking for a knockout on super tuesday. new jersey governor chris christie campaigned with trump in arkansas yesterday. christie endorsed trump yesterday. at this rally trump spent most of his time bashing marco rubio and fending off attacks on his business record. senator rubio continued to blast trump on the stump in georgia yesterday. rubio said he can win the gop nomination because he believes voters will start to see that trump is a, quote, con man. senator ted cruz taking stock at the verbal combat between rubio and trump. cruz said he wants to avoid a battle of insults. he predicts he'll do well in his home state of texas on tuesday.

john kasich took issue with the tone of the republican campaign. the ohio governor questioned how candidates who call names and trade insults can present themselves as leaders to young people. ben carson says people are offering him money to drop out of the race and endorse candidates. he said at a rally yesterday, he said anyone who wants him to quit can, quote, jump in a lake. later this morning they will join chuck todd on motor the press. it's right here at 10:30 on nbc 10. new from overnight, a man is recovering after being attacked by a home invasion in west philadelphia. police say the man was inside the apartment in this building on chestnut street around 2:00 a.m. when three men busted through his front door. the man attacked the victim, took his cell phone and wallet. the man was treated at a local hospital for cuts on his face.

so far police have made no arrest. we have new information this morning on a rookie police officer in virginia who was shot to death during her first day on the job. authorities say a gunman shot officer ashley guindon and two other officers while responding to a domestic dispute last night. they say a civilian woman also killed in the dispute. police arrested the suspect who they say is in the military. he's scheduled for court tomorrow on a murder charge. a neighbor at the scene described what happened. >> i was walking up the street with three other people and we heard three gunshots so we started running. and then when we got up here, we saw all the cops. we were trying to come home and they told us to go inside. >> this was their first day working. the whole thing is tragic. >> officer guindon served in the marine corps before being sworn

in as a police officer this past friday. we're working to find the conditions of her two wounded comrades. we have new information about a stabbing at a philadelphia septa station. these are surveillance pictures you're about to see of the man police need your help identifying. the vehicle, a woman was going into the elevator at the huntington station in kensington saturday morning. authorities say a man pulled out a knife and demanded money from her in that elevator. he then stabbed her in the shoulder and leg and ran off. the victim is being treated at the hop. she is expected to be okay. city inspectors think weather may have played a part in the collapse of this building. the city license and inspection department said the property doesn't have any open violations. they suspect heavy rain and strong winds may have played a part in the collapse.

the victim went to the hospital. he is expected to be okay. today family and friends will gather to remember cara mccollum, a former miss new jersey. funeral services are scheduled at her hometown in arkansas. a memorial service was held there last night. another memorial scheduled for next month in ocean city in, new jersey. mccollum was a news anchor. she died last monday following a car crash in bad weather. mccollum was girlfriend of our nbc colleague and friend keith jones. last night the miss philadelphia pageant paid tribute to cara. nbc 10 at drexel university's mandel theater. pageant contestants and spectators were asked to bring a book. those will be donated to the birthday book project. >> we're so proud of her being part of new jersey.

we plan on carrying on her birthday book program. >> that program provides brand-new gift wrapped books for kindergarten to 5th grade students for their birthdays. it promotes the idea that reading is a gift. coming up, caught on camera, a heroin user is brought back from what could have been a fatal overdose. only nbc 10 was there to see it. plus tempers flair at a kkk rally leading to a violent ending.

weather heading our way. back in just a few minutes. all right. thank you, bill. new from overnight, philadelphia police looking into two convenience store robberies in one at wawa, the second over a mile away at 7-eleven. initial reports said suspect in both used a crowbar to threaten the clerk. it is unclear if the robberies are connected. also from overnight, a fire damaged a home in philadelphia. it was quickly put out and no one was hurt. next school year students will be allowed to carry guns on the campus of north texas. the policy will allow those that have a gun license to carry a concealed gun while on campus. students will not be allowed to openly carry the weapons. the unt board of regents

accepted the campus carry policy friday. the new policy takes effect august 1st. what you're looking at, these are nine states that allow guns on college campuses currently. a new iphone could be on the way. later this month apple is expected to release a new smaller screen iphone and ipad. the product release could come days before the company's fight with the federal government over iphone encryption. nbc's mark var ger has more. >> reporter: many use the technology every day, security features on mobile devices protect messages, photos and personal information from getting into the wrong hands. >> presently a court order directing apple to please offer to disable certain security features. >> the software would allow fbi to attempt to retreat data from the phone of one of the san bernardino shooters. apple refused to comply saying

expectations there, didn't she? >> this is a crushing defeat for bernie sanders. hillary clinton coming out on top by a 3-1 margin setting off a new phase of this campaign. the final results look like this. 74% of the vote for hillary clinton, 26% for bernie sanders. the polling did predict the win. hillary clinton showed her strategy for african-americans and women could dominate the election. her opponent said the race isn't over. bernie sanders expected to lose in the paumt state and spent the time in the air flying to texas. >> sometimes you win, sometimes you lose. tonight we lost. i congratulate secretary clinton on her very strong victory. tuesday over 800 delegates are at stake and we end to win

day on the job in northern virginia. authorities say gunmen killed officer ashley guindon and wounded two of her comrades at this scene of a domestic dispute last night a civilian woman was also killed in the dispute. police arrested the suspect who they say is a military serviceman. he's facing a capital murder charge. new from overnight, we're learning details about the police shooting of a teenager boy in lake city. authorities say one officer, and possibly a second, opened fire while responding to an assault call last night. they say the teen was arguing with another person when officers arrived. medics took the teen to the hospital. there's no word on his condition. in south jersey, a fire chief is recovering from a heart attack he suffered while battling a fire at a beach house in ocean county. crews from several departments responded to this home. the fire chief collapsed on the

children a year will get it. now research shows an outbreak of so-called super lice in 25 states. it's much more resistant to treatment as rehema ellis reports. >> 11-year-old lila is getting checked for lice today. >> there's another one right here. >> sure enough, they are back again. her mother andraya said it's the fourth time in a year for her family. >> i said, is your head itching? she said, not really. she was itching her head are not like she was itching her head. >> reporter: she's not alone, scientists have recently identified super lice, resistant to chemicals in over the counter treatments. the so-called super lice have now spread to 25 states. >> it's important not to panic. lice are not a health hazard. they don't transmit disease. >> reporter: to kill these super lice experts advise first learn how to comb them out. use over the counter treatments
