falling here in collingswood, camden county. south jersey is one of the areas that's expected to deal with the most snow today. already it's accumulating there. >> here's a look at the nbc 10 first alert weather radar. most of the area will be waking up with some snow this morning. find out how long we'll be seeing the snowfall. good morning and welcome to "nbc 10 news today." i'm vai sikahema. >> i'm katy zachry. it is just 5:00 a.m. on your friday. let's get right to first alert meteorologist bill henley. bill, spring is right around the corner but we're clearly not out of winter weather yet. >> not with snow falling in the area. it is just a light snow in philadelphia. as you mentioned, delaware and south jersey, it's coming down steadier. it is going to be here this morning. and then gone later this morning. this afternoon we'll be drying out and warming up, too. you can see the snow, light snow in philadelphia, center city, where that live camera was. to the south, that's where you'll see greater accumulation, one, possibly two inches on some
of the colder spots, mainly on the grass. jessica boyington has been showing us, the back edge is in the baltimore d.c. area. that will swing through fairly rapidly this morning. we still have to deal with the snow to start with. that extends into new jersey as well. cape may above freezing but it's cold enough for some of this to stick, evenin southern delaware. we'll have to deal with the snow this morning. the temperatures cold enough, just enough to support the snow sticking, 31 in philadelphia, wilmington is 30 degrees and it's dropped into the upper 20s in roxborough and south philadelphia. snow to start with but as the day goes on, the snow will taper off. by 10:00, clouds and 34 degrees, up to 38 degrees. then into the 40s with some sunshine later on today. neighborhood by neighborhood forecast when i'm back in ten minutes. jessica boyington is watching those roads closely this morning. how are they looking, jessie? >> we've had better day for sure. 95 around cottman avenue, a few vehicles involved in an accident.
we have penndot crew, more flashing lights up ahead. several vehicles involved. we also have police activity here. the traffic is moving slowly by the scene. that's headed southbound. i put a southbound drive time up here. a few moments ago i was looking at it in the yellow already, about an 18-minute trip southbound from woodhaven road to the vine street expressway. average speeds you can see right here are already moving down into the 50s. that's really early for that. if this accident scene stays out there for quite some time, we may significant backups because of that. in philadelphia, construction on 34th street closed between walnut street and spruce street. if you're in little egg harbor township on the garden state parkway, accident scene exit 58. left shoulder is blocked there. vai? >> thank you, jessie. our coverage continues in delaware. matt delucia is live in wilmington. tell us how things are right now. >> reporter: about a half hour ago we were just over the state line right by pennsylvania and
delaware. now we've moved farther south here along 202, concord avenue right here. a little bit more residential area, just north of downtown wilmington. you can see snow covered cars that are here, right by monroe avenue. you can see how on the pavement, the asphalt, it really just looks wet. the snow is not sticking. again, we're seeing light flurries here right now. it has picked up in intensity a little bit within the last 30 minutes. some of the cars out here traveling on the road. the headlights are on, the wipers on, going at their typical speed you normally see during some rainfall. really not seeing much in the way of slippery surfaces at this point. but we have seen salt trucks through some of the major roads throughout the area. again, it is a good idea just to be careful as you head out the morning. at this point it doesn't look like anything in the way of shoveling. just some of the grassy surfaces where that snow is accumulating. that's about an inch or two in some spots.

accident itself, because everybody was on their way home. >> how have you been able to deal with it? >> just lean on each other. >> the victims co-workers say they didn't normally car pool together. they leave behind spouses and children. you can go to the nbc 10 app or nbc10.com for information about a go fund me account set up on their behalf. it is now 5:05. happening today in atlantic city, the community will come together to mark the anniversary of a police officer who was killed directing traffic. officer thomas mcmeekin. family, friends and colleagues gather at st. nicholas of tolentine church. he was hit by a bus while directing traffic at an accident scene. more than a dozen recruits join today. the graduation of 15 new
recruits who completed eight months of training. you're looking at a previous ceremony. the graduation happens at the fraternal order of police lodge 5 in northeast philadelphia. nbc 10 was on hand as radnor township opened its citizen police academy. the free program, people can take a series of classes and field exercises designed to give them working knowledge of the township's police department. now your nbc 10 first alert weather with meteorologist bill henley. >> six minutes after 5:00. we have snow to start with, tracking light snow in the area. that will be here this morning and then tapering off this afternoon. if you're looking for snow, the best place to find it, the greatest amount of snow will be in delaware and south jersey. an inch for most areas, possibly two in some areas farther to the south. slippery roads. temperatures just below freezing. be on the lookout. you heard matt delucia say in wilmington most of the roads have been fine.
most have been treated. shouldn't be a problem. we'll see a warmup today,ç a he warmup next week. spring-like temperatures will be coming our way which makes this easier to deal with. doylestown, 27 degrees, light snow falling there in northeast philadelphia and millville, just below freezing. avalon, you can see snow, just a dusting on the ocean. it is going to be not very stormy. warmer air coming in from the ocean which could change things over to rain at cape may. not in philadelphia. we have snow. we will see snow until it ends. it will be ending this morning. light snow in the wilmington area that matt delucia was showing us. steadier in southern new castle county and into kent county. that's streaming across into northern cape may. south jersey, it looks like northern cape may into the atlantic city area is seeing the steadiest snowfall. could continue into the early afternoon hours. by 8:00 this morning, this computer model is showing it's out of philadelphia with thinning of the clouds north and
west. along the coast, snow is coming down. look at the temperatures, middle 30s. which means snow will be falling, possibly mixing with a little bit of rain that's just offshore and it will be melting as it hits. the snow could still be going into the late morning and early afternoon hours. 1:00 in the afternoon, there goes the last breath of this system that is largely missing us to the south. the forecast is calling for a bit of snow this morning and then breaks of sunshine this afternoon, into the 40s for fleetwood, bethlehem, camel back, 40 degrees this afternoon. very light snow for new hope, abington and moorestown to start with. that sunshine will be breaking through during the afternoon. rain mixing with a little bit of snow right along the coast. the temperatures staying above freezing, so it shouldn't be an issue right on the shore. we've soon a dusting on some of the boardwalks. inland, look at the warmup we'll see. smyrna up to 44 degrees in wilmington and low 40s for malvern and philadelphia. look at the seven-day forecast with more on that warmup when i come back in ten minute.
thank you, bill. 5:08. just about 5:09 this friday morning. flashing lights. i think that's 95. >> 95 north of the city. we've been following an accident. this is before you came on. don't worry about it, vai. >> bring me up to speed. >> we are seeing some delays, our total drive time hasn't increased yet. definitely delays by the scene around cottman avenue on the southbound side of 95. you can see that police activity there on the scene. there are those penndot crews. we had a few vehicles involved. it's a slow go as you head by the scene. it's headed through the work zone as well. we have restricted lanes there. up here into that right-hand shoulder, there is another vehicle pulled off to the side into that work zone. you can see as it wraps around, that's how our camera's view point is. that backup is slow, approaching the scene as well. we'll have updates for you here. as you can see, our drive time is okay, a 15-minute trip southbound fromç woodhaven roa to the vine street expressway.

welcome back. it is 5:13 right now. here's a live look from cape may this morning at the wet roads down there. the jersey shore is expected to deal with the highest snow totals in our area today. right now we are tracking light snow across the region. that could have an effect on your morning commute. and nbc 10's drew smith is live for us in center city philadelphia this morning. drew, tell us about the conditions you're seeing there when we saw you a few minutesqtd ago, the hood was on. now it's off. >> it's been varying. it's not sticking to my jacket. it would be the equivalent to a drizzle, i would say but it is know. if you look at the light it's
falling down like that. where it is sticking, that's what you'll see when you walk out your door this morning. on the grassy area, some sidewalks. that's the most snee we're seeing is on the car. it's light snow. you'll be able to brush it off easily and get on to the roadways. the concern is with the wet roads if there are freezing areas or some of the snow that's built up on the shoulders. be careful when you drive around. just a light snow in south philadelphia. something you'll want to wipe off your car as you head out the door. now is a good time to make sure you're signed up with nbc 10 school closing alerts. it doesn't look like it's impacting any schools. bill told us that yesterday. check the nbc 10 app or nbc10.com website for details. from our delaware bureau now, federal environmental officials filed complaints against a pest control company and two businessmen after a pesticide made a delaware family
very ill during a caribbean vacation. the couple and their two sons got so sick they nearly died after a pesticide worker sprayed for bugs right below their villa in the virgin islands last year. the chemical used was methlebromide. the chemical was banned for residential use 30 years ago. leaders in wilmington, delaware, are moving forward with a citywide ban on feeding birds. it includes feeing most birds and other wild animals this of bread for birds in cool springs park. >> pen you look at the pictures of loaves of bread everywhere and it just adds to more problems beside the birds. you you can have the rodents and everything else. >> those in support of the ban say the bird feeding is causing a problem because seagulls and
so many other birds are now in the park. they say bird droppings could lead to health issues for residents. happening this weekend, we will get a taste of spring right after the snow that's blowing in, thanks to the philadelphia flower show. the show opens tomorrow at the pennsylvania convention center. it runs through sunday, march 13th. doors open at 11:00 tomorrow morning. 8:00 a.m. on sunday and 10:00 during the week. now, in a preview of the flower show, store fronts across our area have been displaying signs of spring all week and even longer. some local businesses received bloom philly awards. among the categories were most historic, best use of natural elements and best representation of a national park. this year's flower show is celebrating the centennial of the national park service. you've been to the flower show. >> i have. >> it's amazing. >> it's a great event, especially this time of year. >> absolutely. time to check in on traffic and see what's going on out there. >> we are starting on the new jersey turnpike right nowhere we
do have an accident scene. this is not the only accident scene we've seen so far today. chester field township, burlington yb new jersey on the new jersey turnpike between exit 6 and 7 involving a tractor-trailer and a snowplow, blocking things just a little bit there. an update on an accident scene in little egg harbor, all clear on the garden state parkway around exit 58, 539. here's 95 around cottman avenue, this accident scene, we do have penndot crews moving out of the way and on the southbound side traffic starting to move again. 95 southbound from the woodhaven road to the vine street expressway, still a 15-minute trip. as for the area bridges, no scheduled openings for the tacony palmyra or the burlington bristol. speed restrictions on the k commodore barry, the walt, the betsy and the ben, all down to
35 miles an hour. 18 minutes after 5:00, cold enough for sticking on cars and sidewalks and on the grass. as jess sa mentioned, the roads are largely doing just fine. 1 degrees, light snow in philadelphia. we have a bit of a breeze, out of the east/northeast at 8 miles an hour. that will be picking up by this afternoon. any snow is out of here. a live view from here at the nbc 10 studios. a little bit breezy here. not very snowy. you'll see snow covered cars for the pennsylvania suburbs, pottstown and coatesville. the visibility seeing how heavy the snow is. if visibility is not bad and it isn't in any of the locations, an indication of light snowfall. a little bit lower visibility for mount holly. that's steadier snow there. two-mile visibility for atlantic city, millville, three miles at wildwood. on the radar, it looks like it's coming down. this is all light snowfall.
you can see it's a bit steadier in southern delaware and some of the steady snow that's in kent conte has been streaming into new jersey as well now in the atlantic city area. go farther north and west, this is where it's barely coming down this morning. already starting to break up in chester county. there's the tail end of it. that's what we'll see later this morning. by afternoon we'll get clearing, some sunshine breaking through. the temperatures will be headed to the upper 30s and low 40s this afternoon. what's on the ground will be melting fairly rapidly. possibly slipping and sliding this morning but then not an issue this afternoon. and not an issue at all tomorrow. it will be cooler, dry, 46 degrees with sunshine in the morning and then clouds in the afternoon. and a slight chance of a shower coming through early on sunday. later on sunday, closer to 50 degrees. look at the warmup monday. almost 60 degrees monday afternoon. it keeps on going. 68 tuesday, 71 wednesday. still mild with a chance of rain thursday. bill, thank you. it is about 5:20 right now. heading to atlantic county, nbc
10's ted greenberg is live in pleasantville for us to show us what's happening there. you have pretty significant snow, ted. >> reporter: yes, katy, good morning. the snow is coming down right now. the flakes have gotten bigger and the snow seems to have picked up in intensity over the last half hour or so. you can see it is sticking to the cars. it is certainly sticking to the trees, sticking to the grass. but yo%kpzp come out here on to sidewalk, sticking a little bit. here on dalila road, route 9, that is clear. when you go to some of the overpasses, the bridges, it's a different story. we have seen snow accumulating on those areas. take a look at video we shot a short time ago of an accident on an overpass. it was an overpass on the atlantic city expressway connector in atlantic city right now route 30 and the marina district of atlantic city. a car crashed there into a guardrail, possibly spun out in
