nbc 10 news starts now. smiles, hugs and tears of joy as fear melted away. our cameras captured the reunion of a baby taken from its mother at the mall last night. >> this was a bad night. it was all a bad night. >> police are now trying to piece together exactly what happened. >> and this woman is in custody. we'll tell you what's next for her after a long night of worry and panic not only for the
family but for the community. 6:00 amt and 66 degrees outside. this is "nbc 10 news today." i'm tracy davidson. >> i'm vai sikahema. let's get right to nbc 10 first alert meteorologist bill henley. bill, it's going to be warm today but also we're expecting wed weather. >> yes, we've seen wet weather and you can see the warm, the warm winds will be blowing through the day. a live view from center city. the showers, they're going to be on and off. they're already starting to taper off. cape may saw a few rain drops. the light showers will break this morning. another area of showers in the north and west. this is the one i'll be watching, thunderstorms popping up in virginia are a possibility for ourç area during the day. these warm temperatures will go even warmer this afternoon. the winds will be blowing, the temperatures climbing into the 70s today. mostly cloudy skies, 11:00 some scattered showers, possibly heavier downpours in delaware and south jersey and as we go into the afternoon hours, a chance of some thunderstorms. but look at those temperatures, they take off along with the
southwesterly winds, 73 degrees by 2:00. we may see breaks of sunshine late in the day to push us into the upper 70s today. neighborhood by neighborhood forecast when i'm back in ten minutes. it's a friday. see how it's moving, if it's moving with jessica boyington in the nbc 10 traffic center. >> you can see the flashing lights around girard avenue over here. that's headed southbound. really gridlock approaching that scene right now. that's headed southbound towards the center city area. now we're at a 28-minute drive time. speeds dropping into the 20s. normally we're at a 13-minute drive time and things are still moving. you can see this disabled truck over here, allowing only that one lane to get by. it's starting to be a rough go. also watch for pretty serious accident out in montgomery county in to you mince e towame.
this morning, there are a lot of new developments to a story we first told you about yesterday evening. >> a 7-week-old baby boy is back home with his family after a five-hour long ordeal that triggered an am bertber alert a five-hour search. this is the baby's grandfather. >> i was hysterical trying to get here to be with my daughter and her family. everything came out good, you know what i mean. we all prayed in here together. everything was great. you know what i mean? so everybody is getting theirself back together. >> what do you do now? >>ç take it home, take it down. go rest. >> the cameras were there for the joyous reunion week the 7-week-old ebay baby ababy and at the police station. this is surveillance video
of the woman seen leaving the king of prussia mall last night. we're expected to learn what charges she's facing when she's in court later this morning. we have live team coverage, monique braxton is live at king of prussia mall. >> let's start with nbc 10's drew smith, live at upper merion police headquarters. >> we never stopped working this story overnight. i've been making calls to investigators. just spoke to someone who said we should expect a new release of information in a few hours about this suspect. it all started around 5:30 last night. police say the woman in the mall befriend a family at the food court. when the family's 7-week-old baby began to cry, that stranger offered to help and quiet him. that's when she ended up running off with the child. tips began coming in when police put out that woman's picture. it led to a search of several locations in montgomery and chester counties. it was in tredyffrin township at a home where they eventually
found her and the baby unhurt. the family waiting for hours for good news finally got it. we saw them praying and hugging each other and later, a happy reunion with their baby. we spoke to the grandfather. listen. >> that's a bad tragedy not knowing where your baby is at. >> it comes from very good, excellent police work that this child was found safe. i want to commend all of my officers and all the officers that assisted us in this case. >> reporter: we're told that family lives in the port richmond section of philadelphia. the woman in custody has ties to king of prussia and police don't believe there's any connection between the two. tracy and vai. >> the baby was missing for hours. what do police think the suspect was doing with that child for all that time? >> yes, tracy, it turns out she wasn't hiding this child. in fact, police said she was in several locationsárju)jt off the baby to her own friends and family. again, we hope to learn more about what her motivation might
have been when police release more information later on today. >> drew smith, live at the upper merion police headquarters. thanks. this is one of those stories that impacted an entire community. >> the whole thing started at the king of prussia mall, thousands of people were inside when this whole ordeal happened. one of those people at the mall at the time was nbc 10's monique braxton. your car was even searched as you were leaving the mall. is that right? >> that's right, vai and tracy. there was an incredible police presence here at the mall just after 7:00, i was in a line of folks leaving. police stopped me. i asked what was going on. they said a baby had been taken and they needed to search my car. they checked my back seat and then waved me on my way. if you're just waking up, we want to take you through what the scene looked like here at the mall last night. take a look at our video now. it was unbelievable, chaotic and, you know, it's something you will never forget. police were at every exit, leaving the mall. they were talking to people. we talked to some of those
shoppers who had also been stopped by police. >> we're just absolutely shocked that that was happening here. >> that seemed to be the sentiment of everyone we spoke to last night. police were walking through the mall, the suspect seen on surveillance videotape leaving the mall with a 7-week-old baby in her arms. two hours later, an amber alert was broadcast on tv. through the emergency alert system. first for philadelphia county, then chester, montgomery county, where the crime occurred and then surrounding counties. then after 9:00 last night, more than four hours after the child was taken, the amber alert signal was sent via cell phone, waking up many people in the area. state police issue amber alerts as you know when a child under the age of 18 is abducted or kidnapped or believed to be in imminent danger. we'll stay on top of this

breeze blowing. the last few showers blowing through new jersey. gusting to 17 in wildwood. 30 mile-an-hour wind gusts in the pocono mountains. atlantic city, spring rls for may's landing. light showers this morning but we could see heavier downpours later this morning. the best chance of seeing those is in delaware and south jersey. here's your hour by hour futurecast. 9:00 this morning, the rain starts moving back in. the heavier downpours at 10:00 in central and southern delaware and into new jersey, into the early afternoon hours. much of the area will be getting breaks in the rain and possibly even a little sunshine to help boost the temperatures. then the afternoon showers, they're going to be spotty at best, according to this computer model. some scattered light showers at 4:00 in the afternoon. but just to be on the safe side, keep an eye out for a thunderstorm later today. scattered showers, temperatures climbing, 70s for bethlehem,

in houston this morning. >> villanova will finally take the court on their march to victo victory. nbc 10's matt delucia is in houston this morning. you spoke to villanova alums. one man who's been to a bunch of final four games, including the one that's arguably the biggest upset in tournament history? >> that's right, vai and tracy. he'sç been to three villanova final four games so far. he was there in 1985 when villanova won the national championship. he's had quite an experience and he's hoping for a repeat performance this time around in 2016. tom is from the class of 1968. get this, he bought his final four tickets for this year just over a year ago. and if that's not crazy enough, he's going to the game with friends of his who are oklahoma fans. >> this is my fourth villanova final four. the first one was 45 years ago, right next to the stadium where

live special from houston called "villanova:mar march to victory let's get you to work. >> jessica boyington in center city. is there something going on there? >> yes, it's not on vine street major, it's vine street local eastbound. an accident scene between 15th street and broad street. take the vine street expressway right now. we're in the green on the vine. you can take that to get through or you can follow it around the block and you'll be fine. not a huge amount of volume heading through the center city area. still early for that. here's 95 around girard avenue, big delays, 42 minutes right now headed southbound from woodhaven road to the vine street expressway. and typically about this time we're at about a 15-minute trip. a disabled truck over into the
right-hand shoulder. the drive times are starting to get up there. over in montgomery county, there's also an accident scene in towamencin. watch out for that. here's the 42 freeway. a lot better here than what you can see on 95. we are starting to see that added delay headed northbound towards the philadelphia area. just checked in with the drive times from 55 headed to the walt whitman, a five-minute trip. now your nbc 10 first alert weather with meteorologist bill henley. >> 39 degrees. that's the normal temperature this time of year. we're not going to see anything close to that. it is so warm and cloudy this morning. a live cloudy view looking across the delaware from the adventure aquarium. 68 degrees. that is about 30 degrees warmer than normal. with a little bit of a breeze at 11 miles an hour, that's a wind that will keep us warm
throughout the day in spite of the clouds and the chance of showers, possibly even some thunderstorms. right now, lots of cloud cover. behind these clouds is the rain that will be moving in during the day. it's not going to be an all-day rain. spotty showers in delaware and south jersey. light rain in the atlantic city area toward the northwest. this weekend, though, a chance of some snow early sunday morning. that's some light snow falling in the pocono mountains, northampton county, lehigh valley, reading, we couldç seen inch or two inches in some of the higher elevations on sunday morning. that's sunday. today it's just going to be occasional rain showers. the showers will be accompanied with windy conditions and warm. look at the readings. 75 to 78 degrees this afternoon. some breaks of sunshine later today. and limited sunshine tomorrow. mostly cloudy skies and a chance of some showers, light rain showers and only rain showers on saturday.

we're following the latest on the kidnapping of a baby at the king of prussia mall. that baby is safe this morning but this morning we're finding out more about the suspect and what may have motivated here. that's next. and good morning, i'm matt delucia, live in houston following the villanova wildcats on their march to victory. i've been talking to fans who are going to the game. you'll hear from some of them, coming up.
>> our cameras were there as the family went through a range of emotions. it all started with panic after a woman took the baby from king of prussia mall. en a e and a warm start to y day. we're already in the mid to upper 60s in most places and it's only going to go up. first alert meteorologist bill henley is tracking showers along with that warmth. good morning. welcome to "nbc 10 news today." i'm vai sikahema. >> i'm tracy davidson. 6:30. it is warm outside. we have to be prepared for rain today, bill henley? >> a chance of thunderstorms. we're looking at cloudy skies through the area. as you mention it's very warm this morning, 68 degrees in philadelphia. the winds are at 11 miles an hour. we'll see them gust to near 35 miles an hour this afternoon. just a few scattered showers in ocean city heading toward atlantic city. that's very light rainfall. we saw a few rain drops in philadelphia. but the next round, that's to our southwest. look at that thunderstorm activity, now firing up, moving
through virginia, charlottesville, just pastç richmond in the next hour and due in here later this morning. cloudy at 8:00. by 11:00 we could see some of the showers and thunderstorms. in spite of that, the temperatures are climbing. it's a strong southwesterly winds, moving up to 23 miles an hour. don't forget your umbrella if you're leaving the house. let's check with jessica boyington and see how the first alert traffic is moving this morning. >> we're seeing huge delays still, bill, from this disabled truck on 95. it's been here for a little over an hour now. it's right around girard avenue. the flashing lights are over into the right-hand shoulder. part of the next lane blocked as well. we still haven't recovered from all that delay approaching the scene. now two lanes are getting by. headed southbound towards center city we're at a 52 minute drive time. this is typically a 13 to 15-minute trip here. big delays. you can see, we might be seeing gaper delay headed northbound as
well. we have the off-ramp from girard avenue headed northbound closed due to construction. average speeds in the teens right now. it will be a slow go right there. in center city, watch for an accident on vine street eastbound between 15th street and broad street. we're still in the green on the vine street expressway. take that as your alternate. vai and tracy. >> jessica, thanks. developing right now, a 7-week-old baby is back with his family after a five-hour ordeal that triggered an amber alert and a search through at least two counties. >> today we're expected to learn a lot more about the woman police arrested in this case. >> this morning we have team coverage, nbc 10's monique braxton is live at king of prussia mall where the baby was taken. >> first let's start with nbc 10's drew smith live in upper merion police headquarters. the baby is safe, the suspect is in custody but police have a whole lot of work ahead of them. >> i've been in touch with police so far this morning. we know they had spoken to people connected to the accused kidnaper. but we should be finding out
shortly what kind of trouble she's in. the charges against her are pending this morning. there was surveillance video that brought in tips about this woman and where people spotted police moved from point to point in montgomery and chester counties, eventually finding her and the baby at a home in tredyffrin township. when that news reached dozens of the baby's family members here in upper merion, there was a huge sense of relief after hours of waiting. still the family wants to know why someone would take an infant like this. the baby's grandfather spoke to nbc 10 about that. >> she might have a problem. the lady might have a problem. i ain't going to say i'm going to forgive her. there's a 50/50 chance. >> reporter: everything seems okay with him. the family lives in port richmond were we're told by the grandfather, and the woman who's in custody apparently has ties to king of prussia.
it is unclear right now if there was any connection between them. police saying there was no connection. that woman was just a stranger who befriend that family in the mall. live in upper merion, drew smith, nbc 10 news. >> drew has worked that case all night. thank you, drew. our team coverage continues with the impact on not only this family but the community. >> monique braxton is at the king of prussia mall. you were actually there when this all happened. what was that like? >> i was come together mall, i noticed an incredible presence at every entrance and exit. as i left just after 7:00 last night i was stopped by police. i asked them what was going on. they said someone had snatched a baby. and they just needed to look in the back seat of my car. they did that. so i want to take you back and show you some of the video of what it looked like here at the mall last night. policeali police at just about every entrance and exit shortly after
the baby was taken from a food court at 5:45. police from several jurisdictions were posted everywhere. you see the officers stopping cars, checking them thoroughly and waving customers on their way. skyforce 10 was over the scene capturing the chaos. shoppers we spoke with shared what police told them. >> they just told us that a 7-week-old child was taken and the lady had a white shirt and purple hair and the baby had on an anke jacket. >> i was getting texts all night from other chiefs, offering help. the fbi, montgomery county detectives were here immediately. >> the suspect was seen on surveillance videotape as she left the mall, cradling the baby in her arms. two hours later, an amber alert was issued. after 9:00 last night, four hours after the child was taken, the amber alert was sent via
cell phone. state police do issue amber alerts when a child under the age of 18 years of age is abducted, or believed to be in iminnocent daminent danger. the investigation is ongoing. live for now outside the mall, monique braxton, nbc 10 news. to recap how this all happened, it was about 5:30 yesterday when police say a woman was seen taking a baby from a mall. you can see that on the surveillance video. police issued an amber alert. cars and buses were searched as they were leaving the king of prussia mall. the fbi was asked to come in and help. the investigation led police on the search of houses in upper merion township, malvern, tredyffrin township, and at 10:30, police announced the baby had been found safe and around 11:15, the baby was reunited with the family at the police

this morning we are learning more about that shooting at a bus station in richmond, virginia, that killed a state trooper there. >> authorities say a gunman shot and killed trooper chad dermyer yesterday while at a greyhound bus station as part of a training exercise. trooper dermyer approached the man, the two spoke briefly and then he opened fire at close range. two other troopers opened fire and killed the gunman. two women were hurt in the attack. dermyer was a former marine and he was 37 years old. for the second time, severe weather slammed the south. you're looking at some of the damage in alabama last night. the storm knocked down trees and power lines not far from huntsville. there was significant damage, no one was hurt. the national weather service will determine if the damage was caused by a tornado. and a tornado over the mississippi delta was caught on cell phone video. here it is. no ones with hurt here yesterday. heavy rains caused flooding and
prompted evacuations throughout that state. now your nbc 10 first alert weather with meteorologist bill henley. >> that's the same storm system coming our way today. it will also bring not just showers and a chance of thunderstorms but also strong, gusty winds. i am already tracking some showers and to our southwest, some thunderstorms this morning. warm winds are blowing, those will stay with us right on through the day, even though the wet weather will be on and off.ç there's a chance we'll see showers over the weekend and it turns much colder over the weekend as well. a cold blast, the coldest sunday. right now, 68 degrees. no sign of any cold around. 68 also in northeast philadelphia, atlantic city is at 60 degrees. cloudy skies over the ballpark this morning. that's a live view from south philadelphia which saw a few rain drops. it's just very light rain in atlantic city, galloway township, mullica hill -- mullica township and may's landing see something of those very light showers. most of the area is drigt rig--y
right now. it will happen. by 9:00 it arrives in delaware. this is where we could see heavier downpours, delaware and south jersey, possibly even a thunderstorm during the late morning hours. then the rain takes a break. we'll be watching a line of showers that will take shape this afternoon at 3:00. during the evening commute is where we could see showers, possibly even a thunderstorm. then it moves out during the evening hours. the temperatures move up in spite of the showers. 65 in the pocono mountains, 74 for allentown and quakertown up to 72 degrees. sunshine on hold for most of the day. occasional showers in doylestown, trenton and mount holly. the gusty winds, you'll feel it at the shore. cape may, 69 degrees. warmer for dover and vineland. heavier downpours this morning and into the late afternoon. thunderstorms pop up in philadelphia. wilmington and swedesboro, 76 degrees today. look at that weekend forecast
and the cooldown with the seven-day forecast when i'm back in ten minutes. all right, thank you, bill. 20 minutes before 7:00. it's starting to get light out there. light enough to see what's happening on the ben franklin bridge. >> jessica boyington can tell us what's happening on the bridge. >> we're doing okay for the most part on the bridge. we're starting to see a slowdown, this is headed westbound. all four lanes headed westbound to the downside of the bridge at the bottom, entering into philadelphia. no real problems, once you get to the vine street expressway. we're clear once you get to the vine exceptç for vine street local. we do have an accident scene there. there's an accident in between 15th and broad street right now with a closure there that we're watching for police activity. and also, your alternate can be the vine street expressway because not a really big delay headed that direction. more updates when i come back in the next ten. >> feel the excitement here at home. things are electric in houston

country who are on the way into town later on today. we caught up with a few of the folks who were here last night over at a local restaurant, wildcats from yesteryear, different classes, all coming together to celebrate their team making it to the final four. they tell me friends and family have been calling, asking if they can visit. quite a few alums have made the trip out here. not a bad reunion. >> how exciting is this? >> it's pretty cool. it's pretty cool. when i thought about, this is my fourth villanova final four, it's mind boggling. >> it's the final four. can't miss this. >> can't miss this. this is the team hotel here in houston. they've got the banners. they're pretty much running this place for the next couple of days at least. they hit the hard wood at the stadium for the first time. that will be coming up with open practice at noon today. a lot of the fans will be able

hour at least. it's much warmer to start with. in spite of the clouds and chance of more wet weather, we will see the temperatures climb into the upper 70s. look at the clouds coming our way. with these clouds, the chance of some scattered showers this morning. we've seen light showers so far. right now, light showers falling at the shore, the central new jersey shore. look at this, thunderstorms moving through charlottesville, just passing to the west of richmond. those are on track for us later this morning. especially in delaware and south jersey. it's part of a system that will stay with us into the late afternoon hours. then look at the snow, just a little bit in minnesota and wisconsin. the dakotas, that's cold air that will be arriving this weekend. during the day today, futurecast showing 11:00 a.m., storms possible in delaware and south jersey. then we get a break before more showers and possibly thunderstorms develop late this afternoon and into this evening. during the late evening hours, it will be decent during the
late evening hours. come this weekend, more rainfall possible on saturday. first thing saturday morning at 5:00, light showers, showers will be on and off during the day on saturday, even into the afternoon hours you might see light showers. then, look to the west. that's snow in western pennsylvania by saturday evening. and that snow is going to be riding in on some very strong winds. the pocono mountains, allentown may see snow first thing on sunday morning. you can see it moving in from the west. 5:00 sunday morning, close to an inch in the pocono mountains. higher elevations may get closer to 2 inches of snow. but no more than a dusting to the north of allentown. looks like most of the area will miss out on the snow. but not the warmth. that will be with us all day today. 70s this afternoon, showers on and off. a chance of thunderstorms, windy and warm today. windy and cooler tomorrow with those occasional showers on saturday, high of 61 degrees. but then here comes the blast of
cold for sunday. if we get that snow to the north, first thing sunday morning won't last long. it will blow right on out of here. 48 the high temperature on sunday morning. the sunday morning, the winds could be gusting to 50 miles an hour. chance of showers on monday, another round of cold for tuesday and wednesday. more rain thursday. >> talk about wacky weather, bill. thanks. nine minutes before 7:00 right now. let's check the roads, including that issue on vine street that jessica has been watching. >> not the vine street expressway, vine street. >> yes, vine street expressway will be your alternate here because we don't have a lot of delays or at least something that will set you back too much except for this closure on vine street. that's between 15th and broad street. this is our camera from the vine street expressway around 8th street turnaround and zoomed in. we do have a closure in here due to this accident scene. your best bet is take the expressway to get by or go around the block. you might see delays there. speaking of delays, major problems on 95 due to that
disabled truck that's been there over anç hour, around girard avenue. 60-minute trip. it will take you an hour headed southbound from woodhaven road to the vine street expressway, what would normological a ta no minutes. we're seeing delays headed northbound as well, which is unusual for today, this time of morning. that's because we're also seeing gaper delay as well. slow speeds no matter which way you swing it on 95 this morning. >> got it, jessica. thanks. coming up, a check of the day's headlines and the stories you need to know as you head out the door. found and reunited with his family, a 7-week-old baby boy is returned after being taken from the food court at the mall. we're also working to finding out what happens now with this woman accused of taking the baby from the mall. live team coverage coming up.

four minutes before 7:00. good morning, gloucester county, along route 47 in deptford. 66 degrees there. first alert forecast is coming up. time now to get a check of the stories you need to know as you're about to start your day. >> we have team coverage and our top story, a baby taken from the king of prussia mall last night is safe and suspect is in custody. monique braxton is live at the mall and drew smith is following the police investigation. drew? >> we expect the accused kidnaper who is held right here to face a judge this morning with formal charges in connection to the kidnapping of that 7-year-old. the baby is doing okay this
morning. nbc 10 was there during the emotional reunion last night. they were at the mall earlier when a stranger befriend them and took off with the baby. the police found the woman and baby at a home in tredyffrin township. detectives spoke to people connected with that accused kidnaper overknnight. now to monique braxton. take a moment to take a look at what we saw last night here at king of prussia mall. police officers from several jurisdictions posted at every exit, skyforce 10 over the mall, capturing the investigation, minute by minute. shoppers we spoke with were shocked a baby would be taken here. our surveillance cameras captured the suspect leaving the fall with the baby. amber alerts were broadcast and sent via cell phone throughout the night. the investigation continues. we'll be following it throughout the day.
