nbc 10 news starts now. houston, we have no problems. check out the elation as fans here at xfinity live celebrate the villanova wildcats victory. running away with excitement. fan who saw the game on the big screen inside the pavilion on campus quickly turned tension into partying. too bad the weather couldn't be nicer for the fans celebrating.
a winter weather blast returns at least for this morning. temperatures below freezing in some spots right now ahead a cold day on tap. this is "nbc 10 news today." i'm rosemary connors. 4: 4:31 on this tuesday. >> it is cold outside. i have a feeling that is not interfering with any of the celebrations going on. look at the wind blowing, the flag here at the nbc 10 studios. the clouds will be thinning out. the wind will stay with us. a cold day ahead. 32 degrees right now with a steady wind at 13 miles an hour, northeast philadelphia. we're running about 10 degrees colder than yesterday. 32 in northeast philadelphia, wilmington, just one degree warmer and it's colder in the 20s for pottstown, coatesville and now 30 degrees in wrightstown, factor in the wind. we have wind chills in the teens and 20s to start with this morning. you'll have to bundle up today. the wind will stay with us. there go the clouds. they'll thin out at 9:00.
sunshine at noontime. it will be a cold one today, 39 degrees at noontime. yesterday afternoon, we warmed to 65 degrees. what a turnaround. we'll go through the forecast neighborhood by neighborhood when i'm back in ten minutes. jessica boyington watching first alert traffic. >> we have a bridge opening right now. a few already this morning. we started with the burlington bristol. now we're at the tacony palmyra, scheduled at 4:35. right now the burlington bristol is clear from the earlier opening and no problems heading over into philadelphia from the walt. out in upper township in new jersey we have an overturned vehicle on the garden state parkway northbound around exit 20, route 50. the left lane and shoulder are blocked. part of that situation, the vehicle is off into the tree. here's the vine street expressway. right around -- actually the schuylkill expressway right around the vine street expressway. we still have this area actually closed off. you can see we do have construction signs there blocking it off. the vine street expressway still closed east and westbound between broad street and the
schuylkill expressway right now. that will be there until about 5:00 this morning. >> thanks for that, jessica.ç the crowd goes wild. kelly's on lancaster avenue was filled with nova fans who couldn't have been more thrilled after the final seconds of the game against north carolina. students poured out of campus to celebrate in the streets after the 77-74 win that gave them their first championship title since 1985. they partied for hours around villanova. the celebration along the main line, things are calmer right now. lauren mayk with what's going on on campus today. you also got an update with police. >> i just got off the phone with radnor police. they tell me at this point they've shut down their operations center and sent everyone home.
take a look. this is why. things have cleared out here at this intersection. the roads are open at this point, not even any police in sight here but let me show you what things looked like just a few hours ago. this turned into a huge celebration here, folks spilling out on the street wanting to just be together, celebrate the team's big win. and i can tell you, there were some arrests last night. when i just spoke with radnor police, seven people were arrested. things like some folks who were fighting. a lot of people out here to have a good time. folks out here are not just students but former students, including one we ran into that was here back in 1985. >> fabulous. ready to share. >> what was your reaction? >> i'm crying, it was crazy. i was on a text with my friends
from '85. it was crazy. we're all as happy as we were then walking on lancaster avenue. >> reporter: that is what they were doing, again this year. at this point they have been walking home to perhaps get some sleep. when everyone wakes up in the morning, one of the things they'll be doing is cleaning up all this trash left on campus. the other thing police tell me is doing sort of an assessment of damage that may be left. they don't expect it's anything major but things will be checked out. live at villanova, lauren mayk, nbc 10 news. >> thanks for that, lauren. 4:35 on this tuesday. newspapers across our region are covered in banner headlines proclaiming the wildz cats championship. the front page of the "delaware county times" says simply "victory" spelleds with the villanova "v." villanova's win is something foç sports fans across our area to savor. nbc 10's pamela osborne live at the melrose diener south
philadelphia. what are you hearing from early morning risers? >> rosemary, people came here to eat but they are certainly getting an earful this morning, because all anybody is talking about is the villanova win. >> incredible. what a joy. >> i talked to an employee here at melrose. he tells me he watched the team fight its way to victory last night. you're watching emotional reaction from the players there where people here at this diner are still celebrating this morning. i called and checked in with officials on campus. they tell me the team has a noon there's a huge celebration being planned for the wildcats arrival on campus which should be early this evening, right now it looks like those festivities could take place at the pavilion or the football stadium. plans are still in the works but what i can tell you, is that some of the people we spoke to said they will be there wherever and whatever time it take place.
others are not planning to attend and instead are spending the early hours of this morning soaking up the wildcat win. >> villanova, villanova, man, best team in the country. the best game that was probably ever played other than the jump by christian ligaettne lightenn. >> dick's sporting goods will be having ncaa wildcat championship merchandise available for fans. you'll want to check that out. we're also checking in to see if there are any plans for a parade. reporting live in south philly, pamela osborne, nbc 10 news. >> we'll be looking forward to that. thanks, pamela. the phillies are also paying tribute to the wildcats. the team tweeted this photo of the phanatic kissing the

now your nbc 10 first alert weather with meteorologist bill henley. 19 minutes before 5:00. it is cold out. look at this, a few scattered light snow showers, chester county into montgomery, upper bucks county. lehigh valley might see a few snow flakes. not a big issue. to the south, that's where steady snow is falling in southern delaware. that's moving to the east. it will move out of the picture. the temperatures,ç still movin down, 20s and low 30s. with the wind blowing it feels like it's in the teens. neighborhood by neighborhood forecast, low 40s for bethlehem, pennsburg and morgantown. a steady breeze through the day for souderton, abington. low 40s along the coast for cape may, avalon and ventnor city all up to 43 degrees. sunshine in smyrna, 47 degrees. no one will get near what we had yesterday when it was in the 60s. 47 in philadelphia and
wilmington, will feel like the 30s for much of the afternoon. i'll show you when it warms up with the seven-day forecast when i'm back in ten. 4:42 on this tuesday. jessica boyington has our first alert traffic. >> the garden state parkway rosemary, we have an overturned vehicle out in upper township on the parkway again northbound around exit 20 at route 50. the left lane and shoulder are blocked right now. we have a little bit of congestion around the scene. not a lot of backups in total. construction in philadelphia, road marking operations actually two lanes are closed and that will be there until 5:00 this morning on passyunk avenue, westbound between 28th street and 61st street. more construction, this is over in center city, broad street when city hall and spring garden street. and 15th street at south penn square. that also will be there until about 5:00 this morning. also watch for the vine street expressway still closed in both directions until about 5:00 this morning. villanova's championship win is something fans will remember,
4:45 on this tuesday morning. nova nation and fans across our region can't see enough of this. the wildcats cut down the net in houston just moments after they won a national championship on a heart-stopping buzzer-beater. this began the celebration that quite frankly is far from over. matt delucia is live in houston with the team and their thrilled fans. matt? >> rosemary, the team hotel we're at right now is still very much busy at this hour. several hours after the game ended. now earlier the catch phrase was party like it's 1985, the year
of the last national championship. now they can party like it's 2016. 31 years of waiting led to this. i was there in the crowd watching those final seconds and this win brought out even more excitement than saturday night's game. everyone thought this would probably go to overtime. the team kept on playing and put this game away at the last second. after the game i walked around the concourse and saw long lines of fans waiting to get their championship shirts and hats. those at the game were clearly ecstatic. >> i'm a freshman. it can only go up from here. >> i wanted to throw up. i cannot believe it. this is the best day of my life. >> nothing like it. nothing like it. >> nothing like this. >> this is the best day of my entire life! >> reporter: the best day of their lives.
perhaps the best day for the team as well. ryanç arcidiacono named most outstanding player. and the team hotel, as you can see right in you, busy tonight. actually within the past hour we saw a long line of cars and taxis dropping off family members who were still at the stadium. now everyone is back inside. but i don't think people are getting a whole lot of sleep after that kind of game tonight. live in houston, i'm matt delucia, nbc 10 news. >> they can get sleep on the plane ride back to philly. you were in the locker room right after that big win. tell us about the mood, what was it like in there? walk us through it. >> reporter: well, the team for much of the season they had this motto of humble and hungry. and they did seem she humble. but the thing was, it seemed like the players, they didn't even really -- it didn't hit them yet. it hasn't sunk in that they won the national championship. as i mentioned the last half hour, i saw krish jenkins

nova's ncaa run. in other news this morning, 67 puppies saved from a freezing van in north jersey will need new homes. police say the animals were in deplorable conditions inside the van, parked just outside of a just up. s store in p in paramus. the owner is expected to face charges. he was charged in february with animal cruelty for conditions at another one of his stores. he says he's been unfairly targeted. >> neither i nor any employee of mine is guilty of any of the crimes. >> the owner had no specific comment about yesterday's incident. the white house is now looking at a new law in north carolina that curbs transgender rights and if the law could impact federal aid to that ç state. the law bans transgender people from using bathrooms in line with their gender identity. yesterday white house spokesman
josh earnest said he's not aware of any federal agency in north carolina that would be affected. he added that the new law does not create a friendly business environment if certain people are being singled out. 4:50 on this morning. 43 degrees outside of the nbc 10 studios. jessica boyington is keeping on the traffic cameras. >> vine street is already back open for all drivers, east and westbound. we did have it closed between broad street and the schuylkill expressway. this is 24th street behind me. cars are moving around now. we don't have any more restrictions there. watch for residual crew maybe in the area. we're also in the process of a bridge opening on the tacony palmyra bridge starting from route 73 and our cameras right in here. no big backup behind the toll plaza right now. take the betsy ross as your

there are a few snowflakes in the area. first round of snow is to the south. it's not just leaving rehoboth beach. it skips past cape may and is heading out of the area. but with cold winds blowing, look at this, a few scattered snow showers into chester county, montgomery county and into bucks county. this is actually 100% natural confetti for villanova's win last night. and it won't be an issue, it will be out of here and we'll get sunshine today. later in the week, the sunshine fades. this storm system, doesn't look like a lot. but that's our rainmaker for thursday. today, cold winds will be blowing. the gusts at 22 milesç an hour 11:00, it will come down late this afternoon. still get that steady north/northwesterly wind to keep us cold today. temperatures in the 40s. with this wind, it will feel like it's in the 30s. watch what happens overnight. the wind speeds come way down. calm in parts of the area at

good morning, everyone. a quick check on your first alert traffic. jessica boyington by the way. we're watching route 422 around trooper road right now. lane restrictions if you look to the left, i guess it's the right-hand side of your screen. over in the left lane we're seeing flashing lights. that's a construction project going on. it should be there until 5:00 this morning. seems like they're running a little bit behind schedule taking out lanes on 422 east and west in between trooper and route 29. more updates when i come back in the 5:00 hour. today rapper and singer wyclef jean will visit with students and teachers. the grammy winner moved from haiti to new jersey as a teen. staying in new jersey, princeton university says president woodrow wilson's name will stay on its school of public policy. a group of students who wanted wilson's name removed because of his racist views protested last
november. wilson graduated from princeton and served as the school's president before his time in the white house a convenientry ago. wilson was regarded as a leading progressive but also supported segregation. former eagle lesean mccoy could still face discipline from the nfl over a philadelphia bar fight but he won't face criminal charges. this video shows the chaos that unfolded back in february in recess lounge in old city. two off-duty philadelphia police officers were hurt. according to the district attorney, it all started over a bottle of champagne. d.a. seth williams says there's no evidence this was not a case of self-defense, so no charges. but the police union is not happy about the outcome. >> we had no sufficient evidence to know who initiated it. we had evidence that would conclude, people could conclude people were being justified in
trying to protect their friend. >> the fact of the matter is, we believe there was enough charges to warrant an arrest. >> the fraternal order of police, the philadelphia police union is looking at different legal options moving forward. from our jersey shore bureau, there appeabsç to be no quick end in sight, no solution in the coming days in the battle over atlantic city's finances. new jersey governor chris christie announced yesterday that he's ordered the state to file a lawsuit against atlantic city. the governor wants to stop the city from making a payroll on friday because he says it owes its school district more than $30 million through july. the mayor of atlantic city claims that monitors for the school and the state meet daily to tell his city when to make the required payments. >> we'll prevent from making atlantic city students and their families collateral damage to their reckless financial gain. >> for every payment that's been made to the school have been made through the governor's office. it is the governor's office and
