nbc 10 news starts now. jenkins three, right wing to win it. he made it! cats win it all! cats win it all! cats win it all! >> the wildcats wow the crowd in champions on a three-point buzzer-beater. >> can you blame them? students erupted in pure joy inside the pavilion here in delaware county after this three-pointer went in right at the buzzer.
they couldn't contain their excitement, spilling out of the pavilion running into the street along lancaster avenue to celebrate. the winter-like weather won't chill the excitement at villanova. word to the wise, bundle up before you head out today. here's a live look. it's in the 30s right now. the wind makes it feel even colder. this is "nbc 10 news today." i'm rosemary connors. >> i'm katy zachry. it is just after 6:00 a.m. on your tuesday, everyone waking up bleary eyed if you stayed up for villanova's huge win last night. >> folks may be going into work later. let's get a check with meteorologist bill henley. >> are you offering to write a note for people who were up late? >> sure. >> it is a cold start this morning. clouds are moving through. you may even see a flurry riding in on that wind which has brought the temperatures into the low 30s, just below freezing in northeast philadelphia with winds at 14 miles an hour, 10
degrees colder than yesterday. this is what it feels like with the steady wind, 19 in allentown, pottstown is 18 degrees. 16 the wind chill in atlantic city. and 21 in northeast philadelphia. a blustery day ahead. the clouds will be thinning outç by 11:00 we're looking at mostly sunny skies. even though it will be warmer, it's not going to be a warm day. that steady wind will continue even at 2:00 when the temperatures are in the low 40s. we'll go through the forecast neighborhood by neighborhood. jessica boyington has first alert traffic. >> we're watching the garden state parkway still for the second accident of the morning. this one's out in egg harbor township. on the parkway northbound around exit 36 at 322. no big delays behind that scene. we're approaching it, no gaper delay behind it, either. the left lane is blocked there. it may be something that affects your morning commute. route 202 looking fine in every direction. route 73. this is over in waterford township along white horse pike.
if you take the p.a. turnpike, we're still in the green. westbound or eastbound, 22 minutes from route 1 to valley forge. rosemary? >> thanks for that, jessica. >> the three, right wing to win it. he made it! cats win it all! cats win it all! cats win it all! >> that was the call from villanova student radio. >> it is one for the history books for sure. all with a three-pointer right at the buzzer. the team hoisted up that trophy as blue confetti fell all around them. students were in the streets just after the game, jumping up and down, cheering, chanting. >> they could not contain their excitement. >> that's right. the excitement was contagious up and down the main line. skyforce 10 was over campus where students gathered around this bonfire burning in the quad. other than this, no major incidents to report, just pure
joy and elation. we have team coverage this morning from the main line to houston. >> let's begin with nbc 10's lauren mayk who is live this morning for us in villanova, right on campus. lauren, you just got an update actually about classes for students today. tell us. >> [ no audio ] >> all right. we lost lauren's audio. we go now to matt delucia live in houston. we'll go back to lauren in just a moment. nbc 10's matt delucia has been in houston since before the weekend gearing up for saturday's game. saturday's win. of course last night's amazing victory. matt, you may have gotten -- i don't think you got any sleep. >> i'm being told to say you got a few hours. i don't think you got any sleep, right? >> i would say since we got here
gotten maybe a total of six or seven hours of sleep. the excitement just keeps going on. maybe lauren is over there feeling some of that excitement right now. it's been a whirl wind for all of the fans, the play areas like here in houston as well. take a look at the team hotel. it is all decked out. it has been since they got here on wednesday afternoon. and it's starting to wind down a little bit. there was quite a party on the stadium grounds and then it moved here to the team hotel. this just has been an all-nighter here. there were about 3,000 people at the pregame party, plenty more at the game itself. it shows you the dedication of all those people who flew out to houston to watch this final four. after that close win, this is what it looked like. and i was right there in the crowd watching those final seconds. and this win brought out even more excitement than the win on
saturday night. this one was a lot more of a nail-biter. the villanova crowd was there. they were intense and even some of the players couldn't believe what was happening. check out after the game, lines of people waiting to buy championship shirts and hats as students were clearly excited to head back to villanova with this win. and really, this is something that these guys have been looking forward to for quite some time. take a listen to some of the students and their reaction. >> 23 hours with my friends. for it to happen like that, with chris jenkins, the most clutch three in school history, i'm losing my mind. it's unbelievable. >> unbelievable. some of those who watched the 1985 championship game say this one was even more fun to watch. i've seen quite a few comments on social media calling this one of the greatest college basketball games they have ever seen. the team hotel still busy this morning. one final morning in houston.
the wildcats head back to philadelphia later on today. live in houston, i'm matt delucia, nbc 10 news. >> all right, matt, you were there for the game. walk us through sort of the emotion and sort of the evolution of people's emotions last night from halftime to the end of the game. what a roller coaster. >> yes, what a roller coaster. because on saturday you had a huge lead. they won by 44 points. this was very different. at halftime, they were losing by five points. a lot of people were even expecting north carolina to just open up that lead and expand it and knock villanova out. but you saw villanova fight back and in the second half, they had a ten-point lead. of course, thatç narrowed and even that game tied toward the end until that last-sec shot, that three-pointer. but what an ending to that gym and what a roller coaster of emotions, that crowd was crazy after that win.

t-i-a-a. welcome back. it is 6:15 on your tuesday morning. this morning, villanova is still on a game-winning high after winning the national championship in dramatic fashion. this is video of junior chris jenkins cutting down his piece of the net after the awesome win. jenkins had the game-winning three-point shot. and our local newspapers are marking villanova's place in sports history. >> here's the front page, a closer look at it of the "philadelphia daily news." it reads "we win." the back page boasts "thrillanova" with chris jenkins in the picture. the amtrak train derailment, crews are expected to beç
interviewed later today about that deadly derailment that killed two co-workers this weekend. investigators are still trying to figure out why a backhoe was on the active tracks in chester on sunday. the engineer of the train applied the brakes five sections before the crash. the train was not speeding. partial win for bill cosby in his massachusetts defamation case. a judge decided to block discovery this that case involving cosby while his criminal case in montgomery county is decided. both cases involve women who have accused bill cosby of sexual misconduct. bill cosby denied the allegations. crank up that heat when you get in the car this morning. >> chilly is an understatement. with the wind, too, you'll need to bundle up extra. we want to check the roads with jessica boyington. you're looking at new jersey roads. >> yes, route 70, cherry hill, new jersey. it will be a cold start when you

henley. >> 18 minutes after 6:00. the temperatures are coming down. cloudy skies, a little bit of a breeze blowing here at the nbc 10 studios. most of the area seeing pretty good wind. out of the north at 13 miles an hour at philadelphia international. 32 degrees. it feels colder than that with the wind. we're watching the sky. there are light snow showers, blowing through the area, riding in on those gusty winds that are stronger in pottstown. look at millville and dover. a 31 mile-an-hour wind gust. those snow showers are on the move, moving into gloucester county. they're skirting past philadelphia right now. those will be out of the picture for the rest of the day. we'll actually get some sunshine and a couple of dry days before that moves in and that is going to be our next round of wet until really a couple days from now. thursday. by tomorrow afternoon, rain showers in northern pennsylvania. there will be snow showers in canada. it will only shall rain for us as we head into thursday. it will come with some warmer
weather but umbrellas will be going up during the day on thursday. today, the temperatures go up but only in the 40s. sunny skies, the breeze will keep it cold during the day today. colder tonight. the wind dies down. clear skies and dry air in place. we'll be in the 20s tomorrow morning. warming into the 50s for the aft afternoon. that warming trend continues. it gets colder as we go into the weekend, 52 on friday, chillier for saturday and sunday. look at this, 61 degrees for the phillies home opener. >> all right. we look forward to that. for the moment we have a blast of winter with us. >> you're not kidding. you will need the winter coat as well as your hat and gloves as you're heading to work or school. no one knows this better than nbc 10's pamela osborne who's live in south philadelphia. >> at some point this morning it was best to be warm than not have a hat on. the hair was blowing all around.
here's the deal. you step outside. it is a bit of a shock to the system but when the win kicks in, that's when you really feel what's going on here. it is cold outside. the wind is sometimes pretty strong. we've seen seen some snowflakes on and off within the past ten minutes or so. it's kind of about that time where everyone is getting up, getting ready for work this morning. we've seen quite a few people bundled up as well as they make it through the city to get to where they have to go. again, if you packed away your winter gloves, your hat, your coat, you may want to break those back out. because, again today, it is chilly. it's just been a back and forth thing. we've had temperatures upwards in the 70s on friday. and now yet again, here we are cold. so just a heads up for you when you head out the door this morning. back to you guys. >> all right. pamela, thank you so much. 6:20 and 29 degrees in

those winds are blowing the snow showers from philadelphia into south jersey, salem, gloucester county seeing light snow showers. really on the verge of flurries in philadelphia. and into lower montgomery and bucks county, warrenton seeing light snow showers. the showers will be out of here. the temperatures they just dropped to 31 degrees. 20s for doylestown, pottstown and trenton and 20s in roxborough and south philadelphia. we'll see the skies clear out. after clouds this morning, sunshine takes over at 11:00. don't expect a huge warmup. we'll be in the 40s at 2:00 this kblaf no afternoon and a steady wind at 16 miles an hour. jessica boyington is watching your first alert traffic. >> we're watching out in montgomery, a disabled vehicle that's just been reported on bethlehem pike and dekalb pike. not a huge backup or problem right now. definitely something you want to use caution when you travel by.

for us in houston where you have been the last few days. pamela osborne is in south philadelphia. let's begin with nbc 10's lauren mayk, live on villanova university campus with some good news for students, lauren. >> reporter: yes, if you know anyone who is a student at villanova who is maybe partying late last night, send them a text, let them know classes are canceled here today. no classes at villanova university, no classes at the law school today. it's a give to the students who are celebrating a huge win overnight. and you know, i can tell you, though, one thing that is on tap for today in addition to celebrating, that is the cleanup. we saw street sweepers out here trying to get rid of some of that trash and glass that was left on the roads after all of that celebration. take a look at what they are cleaning up after, hundreds of people spilling out on to the streets to celebrate. this celebration lasted for several hours last night. partying into the early morning.

no reaction from coach wright. calm under pressure, all pressure. eventually the other coaches embrace him, thrilled by the history-making çmoment. our team coverage continues now from houston. >> that's right. matt delucia is joining us live now outside the players' hotel. you saw this all happen from inside the stadium last night. explain to us what it was like. i know you talked about it being a roller coaster. >> it was a roller coaster of emotions. you just saw that there, katy and rosemary, the image of head coach jay wright and the very little reaction he had. the rest of the stadium was going crazy, especially with the fireworks and confetti that was falling down. it was quite something to see his reaction, that smirk there. that was pretty much it. everyone else was jumping out of their seats. let me show you the team hotel right behind me, the team came back a few hours ago. but this place was quite busy a little bit earlier. and the catch phrase earlier on
in the tournament was party like it's 1985. well, now they can party like it's 2016. 31 years of waiting led to this. i was there in the crowd watching those final seconds and this win brought out a whole lot of excitement. everyone thought this would probably go into overtime in those last few seconds. the team kept on playing and shocked the north carolina crowd and put this game away at the final second, literally. after the game i walked around the concourse saw long lines of fans waiting to get championship shirts and hats. those who were at the game were quite ek stacstatecstatic. >> i'm a freshman. it can only go up from here. >> i wanted to throw up. i cannot believe it. this is the best day of my life. >> nothing like it. nothing like it. >> nothing like this. >> unforgettable!
>> this is the best day of my entire life. >> and here's some interesting facts from the game. the largest lead was by villanova, they had the lead ben ten points in the second half. the lead changed nine times. you talk about a roller coaster there, nine times you had that back and forth going on there. that was something. at tendance at the nrg stadium, 74, wi 74,340. quite an event here last night. perhaps it was the best day for the team as well. ryan arcidiaconarcidiacono, nam outstanding player. hopefully the team is getting rest here at the hotel but weç can't understand if they have quite a sleepless night as they get ready to head back to philadelphia later on today. live with the team in houston,
matt delucia. >> we know you were in the team's locker room after the game. a few questions. what was the mood like there? i'm curious to know if you saw coach jay wright in the locker room after and if he actually showed more emotion. >> i'll answer the second question first. i did not see jay wright. he had a press conference in another room. he was behind the locker room. i did not get to see him. i was in the player area. when i was there with the players, i could see the big slogan during this whole thing was that the team was humble and hungry. and you can really see that humbleness about them and they were just sitting there answering questions. you saw chris jenkins clutching the championship trophy and just sitting there. it really hadn't sunk in yet, it seemed. you know, you would hope as they get back to philadelphia, they get back to campus, that excitement is really going to build and right now it's just surreal for them.

another cold night tonight. fortunately the wind will be dying down. heading out right now, light snow at philadelphia international, 31 degrees, cloudy in reading and cape may is mostly cloudy at 30 degrees. we've been seeing a few snowflakes. you can see them blowing past the comcast center. this is a view from the mellon bank building. clouds thin out later this morning. we'll get sunshine and by then, all of this will be gone. very light, barely reaching the ground. you'll see snow flurries in delaware county through philadelphia into lower montgomery and bucks county and into new jersey, blowing through on those gusty winds that will continue into the afternoon hours.ç temperatures cold enough for snow, certainly, 20s for north and west, pottstown, doylestown, trenton at 28. 28 in wrightstown. just below freezing in wilmington. the lehigh county area, 26 in in briningsville and 29 in allentown.
a minimal warmup, 40s this afternoon. the wind will be steady. feels like 30s for allentown, reading and quakertown, stronger in doylestown, trenton and mount holly. we'll see sunshine after clouds this morning in cape may. vineland and dover, middle 40s today. while it was in the 60s yesterday. that steady woil will make it feel like it's in the 30s even this afternoon. there's a warmup ahead. i'll show you when that arrives in the seven-day forecast when i'm back in ten minutes. >> looking forward to that. 6:41 on this tuesday. at this hour, traffic starts to build. >> especially along 95 as you make your way towards center city philadelphia. what are you seeing there, jess? >> 95 is usually the first pager to start to see jams in our cameras here. this is girard avenue. we do have this southbound drive time right in here towards center city. 24 minutes right now from woodhaven road to the vine street expressway. speeds starting to drop into the 30s. it's definitely a slow go through the work zones there.

as the stadium just went wild. villanova, the talk of the town today. >> it definitely is, from campus to south philadelphia, this is what everyone will be talking about at work and school today. nbc 10's pamela osborne is live for us in south philadelphia. talking with some fans there. and how you can support the team today, pam. >> good morning. what we know is that villanova's win is also dominating headlines across the country. the real emotion behind that win, definitely being felt all throughout philly today. it only makes sense that the topic of conversation here at melrose diner this morning is the win. the game. it's what people have been talking about over coffee and breakfast with friends, even strangers here. one thing is for sure, last night's winç wasn't just for na students or athletes. people tell me they feel like the wildcats won this one for the city, as you can imagine, everyone wants to be a part of it. here is evidence of that. these are lines in houston, nova
fans trying to get their hands on some championship merchandise. but don't worry, you'll get a shot at some official wildcat gear here at home as well. dick's sporting goods will be selling championship gear and people can't wait to get involved, whether that's wearing their support or showing it physically. >> they will be having some kind of parade, i will there be. >> villanova got better and better as the year went on. they played oklahoma during the season and they lost by 20 some points and then they came back and beat them by about 30. they're blowing everybody out. they just got better and better and better. >> so there you go, people really running out of words to describe the excitement they felt after that victory, after that massive win. something to keep in mind, although classes are canceled on villanova's campus today, the book store will be open.

south jersey, salem county looking more impressive into philadelphia, montgomery and bucks county. very light, most of that not even reaching the ground. we've got more wet weather on the way later this week. that storm system that is moving through montana with snow and rain, that's due in here on thursday. it will be warmer by then. today, sunny skies, cloudy this morning, a few snow showers. it will become sunny, breezy and cold. 40s with winds to 20 miles an hour, feel like it's in the 30sç the wind dies down and that means colder tomorrow morning. a pretty good warmup in the afternoon and warmer with the rain on thursday. then the temperatures come right back down heading into the weekend. 52 friday. cold and breezy on saturday and back below freezing on sunday. a nice warmup, perfectly timed for the phillies home opener monday afternoon, 61 degrees. >> of course bill henley orchestrated that all himself. >> thank you, bill. at least if it's going to be this cold, we'll have sun later.

schuylkill expressway. once you get to the schuylkill, we're seeing delays there as well. 95 has seen better days we have the construction. off ramps are closed. we're seeing a northbound drive time increased, 24 minutes northbound from the vine to woodhaven road. speeds into the 30s because through the work zone we have a disabled bus over on the northbound side. delays there and southbound into center city. now your nbc 10 first alert weather. >> it's a cold and windy one this morning. it's blowing some snow showers through the area. that's a live view from the nbc 10 camera at philadelphia international airport. very light snow thwre. and 31 degrees. look at the winds at 18 miles an hour. that's giving us wind chills in the teens and 20s. there go the snow showers through philadelphia into south jersey. might see a few in central delaware. little bit steadier now heading towards the airport. we'll actually get sunshine today and warm into the 40s this afternoon. not all that warm this afternoon.
