6:00, the push for pennsylvania. bernie sanders and hillary clinton courting voters in philadelphia today, just weeks before the primary here. good evening, everyone. i'm jim rosenfield. pennsylvania could play a key role in deciding who comes to philadelphia as nominee during the democratic national convention. fresh off of his victory in wisconsin, bernie sanders brought his campaign to philadelphia today. he is at an event now in center city. but these are pictures outside the liacouras center where he will next head for an event this evening. nbc 10's lauren mayk has been there all afternoon where big crowds gathered to wait to see bernie sanders. >> yeah. this line behind me is moving. you can hear cheers as they

start to move toward inside. take a look at this, it's going to take quite a while to get all of the folks inside. they have some time, the rally doesn't start until 8:00. but today, this is the first day that the focus is on the state of pennsylvania and the presidential race. we had bernie sanders, hillary clinton here today. bill clinton will be here tomorrow. you can tell, they're both making a play for pennsylvania. >> reporter: as the fight for pennsylvania kicks off, hillary clinton reminded the room of her keystone state roots. >> my grandfather worked at the scranton mills for 50 years. that's where my dad and my brothers, my dad grew up, my brothers and i spent wonderful time there. >> reporter: clinton talked trade and jobs. >> my campaign is about breaking down all of the barriers holding working families back. >> reporter: the union hasn't

endorsed some here, she won't have to convince. bonnie wore a but friend 2008. >> i was with her the night she won the pennsylvania primary. it was unbelievable. >> reporter: clinton's opponent, bernie sanders, is attracting new voters. a line snaked down the street to get into the rally at temple. >> he's the only candidate that's going to do something about climate change, which is our generation's biggest issue now. >> reporter: clinton greeted supporters who pushed their way to the rope line. she didn't answer our question -- how much time will you spend in pennsylvania? >> thrilled to take a fophoto. >> commonwealth of pennsylvania is a pivotal state and help make her the nominee for the democratic convention. >> reporter: tomorrow, sanders will address the same room. >> it's good for the excitement, puts pennsylvania in play. usually we're out of play by april. >> reporter: do you think he will be able to make inroads in pennsylvania. >> i'm sure. there's some supporting him.

from tuesday. a new monmouth university poll shows donald trump with more than 50% of the vote in new york. john kasich second. ted cruz is third. trump is gearing foup ining up h in less than an hour in new york. nbc 10's randy gyllenhaal has a one-on-one interview with bernie sanders. watch tonight on the app. new at 6:00, a philadelphia police officer dead, and nbc 10 learned he was under investigation in a stolen guns case. harry hairston looked into the officer's death today. he's in our digital operations center. what did you find out? >> no official word on the cause of the officer's death. but police are now investigating it as a murder. follows years into an investigation of missing weapons. >> reporter: philadelphia police officers we talked to knew

lieutenant tessta had more than 20 years on the force. he was the commanding officer overseeing the processing of illegal guns, confiscated as evidence. but in 2012, he became the center of an internal investigation, two officers under his command filed civil suit alleging he fabricated paperwork to make it look as though the department processed more illegal guns than it had. it claims he shipped unexamined weapons to city hall. motive, ordered to lower a backlog of unexamined guns from 1500 to 500. a review of the lawsuit shows accused of covering up for an officer who allegedly stole 51 guns. that officer accused was never reprimanded. just this in past february the nbc 10 investigators dug deep into the illegal gun problem.

gun problems kept the fiu busy. we found, in just the last three years, there have been more than 19,200 crimes using firearms. the most recent report from 2014 shows, in pennsylvania, the feds recovered almost 9,000 illegal guns, a third found in philadelphia. several police sources tell nbc 10 news he was still under internal investigation, and just last week the department confiscated his weapon. harry hairston, nbc 10. >> check out this brushfire in camden right here. flames started to spread around 4:00 in pen sauken. firefighters around the scene near 37th and river road and from skyforce 10, no homes or buildings near that fire. winds aren't helping, though. nbc 10 metrologist sheena

parveen is here. >> you notice smoke isn't going straight up, it's traveling, mostly to the north. camden county, the area that should be seeing it, as the smoke travels northeast philadelphia. wind from south gusting 25 to 30 miles an hour through a good portion of the area. wind gusts if that general area from 20 to 25 miles an hour. wind not helping the situation. it's going to keep that fire going at least in some spots but we will be watching that closely. temperaturewise with the south wind we made it into the 50s today. warmer than yesterday but chilly. tonight won't being acold. that's ahead of rain. don't expect freezing temperatures tonight. stay in the 40s and clouds increasing. there's our rain for tomorrow, still far off to our west. but as we go into tomorrow morning, take the umbrella. we could see showers for the morning commute. mostly west of philadelphia. heavier rain by middle of the day. i'll show you that coming up.

today, philadelphia broke ground on a new memorial park at scene of the deadly market street collapse. ♪ >> mayor kenney and city officials put the ceremonial shovels into the dirt this morning. the salvation army donated land. a committee collected fund for the june 5th memorial park. six people died and more than a dozen hurt when a building collapsed on to the thrift store june 5, 2013. former city treasurer nancy winkler spearheaded the project for the park. her dawn ann died in the collapse. a convicted contractor and subcontractor who took a plea deal both serving time in prison for their roles in that collapse. now, to the crisis in atlantic city. still no deal in a.c. but lots of finger pointing between governor christie and mayor don guardian. they had news conferences 100 steps away from one another.

denise nakano joining us with this war of words. no progress to report on the desire financial crisis looming in atlantic city. instead, the blame game and name calling continues. city council meeting as we speak and will vote whether to approve a 28-day payroll period to replace a biweekly play paoli check for employees. it will help the resort avoid a shutdown but only a temporary fix. governor christie came within footsteps of city hall talking with the county and how to foster shared service agreements if the state takeover bill passes. christie stood his ground when asked why not meet with mayor guardian face-to-face next door. >> there's no purpose in meeting with a lier. >> he said can you come and sit down at table the answer's yet. he wants me to me with other people, yes. we've got to be reasonable, not unreasonable. >> on atlantic city side speaker

of the assembly has plans to introduce another rescue bill for atlantic city as early as tomorrow. officers can save more lives on the streets of philadelphia because independence blue cross and the district attorney helped fund $50,000 for more narcan kits. the d.a.'s office says philadelphia has the highest rate of drug overdoses in pennsylvania. nbc 10 and our digital team spent months working on generation addicted to heroin crisis in our region. in-depth coverage on the nbc 10 app about treatment, facilities, and stories. congressman chaka fattah will have two more weeks to prepare for his corruption trial next month. a judge delayed the trial, giving fattah and several co-defendants more time to review hundreds of thousands of documents from prosecutors.

the congressman is accuse of taking bribes to repay debt from his mayoral cam name 2007. testimony expected may 16th. happening now, people in camden county getting an update about the dredging project in the cooper river. dredging started in the fall. most activities along the river put on hold. getting into philadelphia from south jersey on the weekend, about to get easier. more rains and you'll have to wait less time. patco trains run every 20 minutes on saturday instead of every 25. next on "nbc 10 news at 6:00," mail delivery on hold, septa detours, how villanova's victory parade will impact your friday. i have that parade forecast coming up. before it, rain tomorrow. i'll show you the timing.

in south jersey does not have to provide services to students with learning disables. a federal judge ruled the school is exempt from federal and state laws, cherry hill mother filed discrimination suit in 2014. she plans to appeal that ruling. three democrats running for their party's nomination in the primary election for pennsylvania attorney general will square off tomorrow night. they are north hampton county district attorney john morgan nellie, josh shapiro, and allegheny county district attorney steven zappala jr. a live debate with all three candidates. we have crews putting final touches on the debate stage. join us at 7:00. tracy davidson will moderate the debate. watch here on nbc 10 or the nbc 10 app. >> now, your nbc 10 first alert weather with meteorologist sheena parveen. >> well, clouds will be moving in tonight.

so, in the meantime, enjoy sunshine we have left. tomorrow morning we could see beginning of showers. otherwise, we have showers and storms in the forecast especially middle of the day. take your umbrella. talking about the villanova parade as we go into friday. rain clearing out. temperatures getting cooler. i'll show you the forecast in a second. into the weekend, getting colder again. and we have a chance of showers as we go into saturday. currently, low 50s across the lehigh valley, 52 philadelphia. 49 degrees wilmington. 49 in doverer. breezy south wind at the moment. south wind is going to keep temperatures from dropping to freezing tonight. we'll be bottoming out in the mid to low 40s. not as cold. and we'll be climbing into the low 50s by 7:00 a.m. with approach of rain. we will be warmer tomorrow than we are now, too. right now, dry, across the area. no rain anywhere close. but if we take a wider view, we have showers back off to the

west. all of this rain heading in our direction and later tonight we'll see clouds increasing ahead. we stay dry through the overnight hours. it's tomorrow morning we'll see first signs of showers moving in. here's future weather. we stay dry tonight. clouds move in early tomorrow, most rain west of philadelphia. if you are north and west of philadelphia you could see showers for the morning commute. can't rule out scattered showers elsewhere but the brunt gets here in the middle of the day, lunchtime. from the poconos through south jersey, we could see a heavy line of shows, cannot rule out thunderstorms. clearing for the evening rush. second area moving in around 7:00 p.m. clearing as we go into friday. friday, 7:00 in the morning we could see lake-effect snow showers try to blow in but then go into the afternoon and everything shapes up nicely as we go into friday evening. then zoom out into friday evening off to our west.
