building. we'll tell you what to expect when we can expect a warmup. all those big questions in our first alert forecast. very good morning and welcome to nbc 10 news today. i'm george spencer. it is now 6:00 on this sunday morning. let's get right to the sunday forecast with first alert meteorologist karen thomas. not what we expect for april 10th, snow and cold temperatures. >> absolutely, george. it is feeling more like wintertime than springtime for sure with yesterday's snowfall and then our freeze warning this morning with temperatures in the 20s in a lot of our area in the delaware valley. so it is kind of an interesting mix for sure. throw another blanket on the bed, have another cup of hot coffee or hot chocolate or tea, whatever you drink on a sunday morning. but make it hot. it is cold outside. it really is. look at the beautiful live shot of philadelphia. here is the freeze warning until 10:00 a.m. hopefully you haven't done a lot
of spring planting just yet. the little mums or maybe little pansies out there need to be covered up overnight this past night for sure because this is a sort of temperature reading that new flowers don't really like for sure. look at this, 27 degrees up in allentown. 26 in reading. 25 in pottstown. doesn't get better the closer you get to the shoreline. look at this, windchill this morning. if you're heading out early this morning, yeah, feels like 19 degrees in atlantic city. feels like 24 degrees in philadelphia. bundle up. that's the key. sun and clouds. sunshine will be nice and bright today. this isn't going to do too much to warm us up but i'll take 49 degrees today. >> if you're headed out this morning, you want to bundle up as karen just said. the spring freeze began with a coating of wet snow yesterday. debbie shared this video from egg harbor, township, in atlantic county. this is cold outside again this morning. deanna durante is out in it at
the art museum. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. 49 degrees, gosh, that sounds balmy right about now. take a look. they're setting up for the love run, third year here in center city. and you can expect about 10,000 runners coming out today. i asked organizers who have been here all night long setting up if this weather is a problem for all those runners and they tell us believe it or not, no. >> very big deal. very big deal. it is awesome. i'm so glad the weather held up. >> this is good weather? >> yes. apparently you haven't seen other -- yesterday, snow in april, this is fabulous. little chilly. runners love chilly. >> they do? >> brisk is good. brisk is very good. very good. >> reporter: many volunteers just started showing up. volunteers from benjamin franklin high school out here, they're handing out water. i asked organizers if they'll
serve hot chocolate at the run, they said, no, the runners wouldn't drink that and neither would the volunteers at this hour. many roads will be closed at this section of the city as well as other 13 miles this these runners will be running. you're going to see some closures starting from the oval here, the north side is where the run takes off. the parkway 16th street, 6th street, jfk boulevard, runners come across mlk, strawberry mansion bridge before coming back here. the finish line at the bottom of the steps and the buses are for the relay team. we haven't seen runners show up yet. we're told they'll be here around 7:00 a.m. and a lot of road closures you see roads shut down in this area and areas for the run until 10:30, the oval will be open around noon. that's the very latest reporting live at the art museum on a chilly sunday morning. deanna durante, nbc 10 news. >> thanks. now is a good time to download the nbc 10 app. you can track this spring freeze, look at our live radar and see the very latest forecast
from the first alert weather team or have the weather alerts pushed directly to your smartphone. new from overnight, at least four vehicles are involved in this crash on route 1 in bucks county. this is the scene from one of our traffic cameras up in the falls township area. the accident happened near oxford valley road around 2:00 this morning. there are serious injuries, but still working to find out exactly how many people are hurt. and off duty philadelphia police officer shot and killed a robbery suspect and this morning investigators believed that shooting was justified. the officer interviewed while the suspect was robbing an elderly man at broad and chew streets. investigators say the officer yelled at the suspect to put down his gun and two men exchanged words and police say the man refused to drop his weapon. the officer shot the man, he died at the hospital. community groups in burlington county honored police officers who were killed in the
line of duty. nbc 10 was in dell ran yesterday where dozens of people came together to release balloons for officers who have made the ultimate sacrifice to keep their communities safe. >> people who have gone before us and what we do with the balloons, we send them off, let them know we have not forgot them. we care a lot about them. >> participants want area police officers to know their neighbors appreciate what they do. puts me in the mind set of winter, like, sitting on the sofa with some hot chocolate. >> that is not how we're all supposed to be feeling in april. we'll take another look at how the spring snow looks and felt across our region next. i love doughnuts. >> and she could eat those doughnuts and other favorite foods on a controversial diet.

and good sunday morning. i'm meteorologist karen thomas. we're talking cold, spring freeze out there this morning as we are waking up sunday morning. temperatures are about 12 to 15 degrees lower than where we should be this time of year. can you believe it? look at the blue sky. we're waiting on the sunrise officially and it is really looking nice. high pressure has moved in in the wake of the storm yesterday. we're left with the cold air, though. freezing -- freeze warning in effect now until about 10:00 a.m. this morning for the areas in purple. so if you did any spring planting you're going to want to go ahead and if you haven't covered up the vegetation, it might be too late. you can just plant again. that's okay. 32 degrees by 7:00 a.m.
43 with sunshine at noon. so the blue skies and the sunshine will be really nice. we deserve it after yesterday, for sure. it isn't going to be warming up too much today. we'll have to wait to see when we get that warmup coming up in the 7-day forecast. i'll be back with that and a look at tomorrow's forecast for the phillies home opener. we're excited about that. >> as karen just said, we're most concerned this morning with the freeze warning and the cold conditions. but yesterday, a rare april snowfall blanketed much of the region and nbc 10's drew smith gives us a look. >> reporter: april snow showers it turns out are not so great for the flowers or for getting into the spring spirit. >> puts me in the mind set of winter, you know, like sitting on the sofa with some hot chocolate. >> reporter: big, heavy snowflakes greeted stephanie and darrell green as they walked to the store in ardmore. >> this is sort of cool. it is sort of cool. you got hot and cold mixed
together. it is sticking on the cars. people are still out shopping. >> reporter: the pavement was just too warm for all of this to coat the roads. but penndot still asked drivers to go slow. >> that's where it should be planted. >> reporter: workers at a tree giveaway in south philadelphia say now is the time to get going on spring planting. even as mother nature sends a different message. >> it is best to plant them before the leaves are fully out, so that's why we do it at this time of year, even though the weather can be a little tricky. >> reporter: at the art museum, a thousand people decided to tough it out for the walk against hunger. many wearing hats and hoods. >> we were joking, we had 70 degrees two weeks ago and we get snow and rain on today. but i'm ready for the spring weather, i think. >> reporter: some people said this makes up for the unusually warm winter. the snow put a smile on this kid's face. >> very pretty. >> reporter: instead of getting to perform at the postponed cherry blossom festival in chestnut hill, jennifer took

was mistaken as a drug courier. video allegedly shows the officers beating rivera. the police officers deny the charge saying rivera attacked them. he died late last year after getting hurt in a fight during an incident that was unrelated to this case. five people including two toddlers are dead after a head on crash on a california highway. police say a honda civic was trying to pass other cars on a two-lane road near sacramento when it lost control. a silverado smashed into it, three women and two little girls in the honda all died. the four people in that silverado had only minor injuries. crews have recovered the bodies of three people killed in a small plane crash in alaska. that crash happened friday on admiral island south of juneau. a helicopter team found wreckage from that plane in steep terrain. one person survived the crash and is still in the hospital.
now to a big developing story out of southern india. a massive fire leaves more than 100 people dead at a hindu temple. this is new video of the explosion that started the fire. right there. it happened during an illegal fireworks show. thousands were packed into the temple complex when the big explosion happened. that blaze then quickly spread throughout the temple and trapped people inside. most of the 102 people died when the building where the fireworks were stored began collapsing. more than 100 people are hurt. well, america's top diplomat is giving afghanistan's government a vote of confidence. yesterday, secretary of state john kerry said the u.s. would continue to support the afghans, kerry praised afghan officials for a series of reforms he said they put into practice. observers say afghanistan's government has not worked well since kerry helped install its
leaders back in 2014. this morning, secretary kerry arrived in japan. along with some foreign ministers of other g-7 nations. u.s. ambassador caroline kennedy greeted kerry. he and the ministers will hold talks in hiroshima and take a tour of the city devastated by the u.s. atomic bomb near the end of world war ii. starting today, sending mail gets cheaper. plus, a pricey farewell for kobe. that's all in the week ahead in business. cnbc's dominic chu gives us a preview. >> the cost of a stamp is going down for the first time in nearly 100 years. the price of a first class stamp will fall two cents to 47 cents. facebook's developer conference is expected to unveil new ways for businesses to speak with customers. potentially replacing 800 numbers with automated chat box built into facebook's messenger service. earnings season is finally here.

also let you know when we can expect to feel like springtime. it isn't this morning. 32 degrees our official number now at philly international. we have winds out of the northwest at 9 miles per hour. so we do have a windchill out there now. and making it feel very, very cold. the actual temperature reading now in allentown, 27 degrees. 32 in philadelphia. 28 degrees right now in atlantic city and 30 degrees in millville, new jersey. see that 29 in glassboro. it is very cold outside. we're well below where we should be for overnight lows this time of year. still have some cold air funneling in from the northwest. wind speeds not doing too badly out there. as i mentioned, factor that into the temperature reading and this is what it feels like outside. if you're heading outside, feeling like the teens up here in reading. like 19 in atlantic city. it is feeling like 19 in wilmington, delaware. freeze warning in effect will expire at 10:00 a.m. this morning. we're looking back to yesterday's snow totals.
quite interesting for sure. 5 inches recorded in malvern. 2.7 inches in estelle manor. .3 at philly international. almost 5 inches recorded out there in wayne. waking up this morning, we have clear skies. nice blue sky with some sunshine. but that sun isn't going to do too much to warm us up. we don't have any clouds in the forecast, at least until later on. we have a cold start for sure as we wrap up this weekend on a dry note. breezy conditions later on tonight. clouds will thicken for tomorrow. this is your future cast here. and you see some of the green here on the screen. we could get a passing shower tomorrow. but especially tomorrow morning. we really aren't looking for much rain really until tuesday morning. so monday night into tuesday morning, the front moves through and we could see some of the shower activity actually reaching the ground and passing through the philadelphia area. so hold the umbrellas. really for tuesday, it is looking like now. sun and clouds today, breezy conditions, 49 to 52.
we'll have winds out of the west. 5 to 10 miles per hour. here is a look at your seven-day forecast, going for 49 degrees for a high temperature today. closer to where we really should be by tomorrow. 59, 60 degrees for high temperature. limited sunshine tomorrow. and possibly a passing shower. looking more likely that we'll get the shower on tuesday. 58, 57 by wednesday. but then, boom, we jump up into the 60s. and thank you, feeling like spring for baseball season. shocks my family because they had no idea that i would ever -- that i would ever lose weight. >> she lost more than 100 pounds with a diet that uses a technique that was once shunned by medical experts. but now some say it can work and has benefits. we'll tell you exactly what it is after the break.

windchill. one thing is for sure, the cold temperatures will are you bundling up if you're headed out to church or running errands this morning. and speaking of cold, the flyers actually red hot, headed to the stanley cup playoffs. they clinch a wild card spot with the win which you saw here on nbc 10. good morning and welcome back to nbc 10 news today. i'm george spencer. it is now 6:30 on this sunday morning. and we'll get right to first alert forecast with meteorologist karen thomas and, karen, for the runners out there this morning, good running weather. for the rest of us, it is cold. >> absolutely. so if you're not going to be one of the runners in the race this morning, have another cup of coffee and throw another log on the fire and call it a morning. why not. relax, right? i think the runners are going to be happy with the forecast. just take it easy. you'll want to bundle up if you're headed out. looking live at the art museum. plenty of sunshine on tap today. don't look for things to really warm up, especially this
morning. we have a freeze warning in effect until 10:00 a.m. for all of the areas there in purple. and what we can expect today, we are looking for sun and clouds, but before we get to 49 degrees, we got some very cold temperatures out there. temperatures mainly at the freezing mark, north and west in the upper 20s. and then the windchill factors into. it is a cold start to our sunday morning. not looking for that big of a warmup, 49 degrees as we start out this morning. about 12 to 15 degrees below really where we should be for overnight lows. cold arctic air in place. that ushered in in the wake of the storm from yesterday. so to get a real nice -- real feel on what is going on outside and what it feels like, let's get a check on that from nbc 10's deanna durante, who is live at the art museum. i give you a lot of credit. i'm reporting on whether inside, so you're inside. >> reporter: that hasn't gone
unnoticed. chilly out here for this time of day. i wish i was one of the people who was throwing a log on the fire. the race begins at 8:00 a.m. this is the third love run. it is a half marathon. a qualifying race for many people. 10,000 people, 44 different states will be here running. before that happened, a lot of people were out here all night long. look at video we shot before 5:00 a.m. of the people working to set up to get ready for this race, setting up the finish line here. they were bundled up in sweatshirts and hats and coats and tell us despite being up in the middle of the night and the weather, they were still going to work with a smile on their face. >> it is cold. but it isn't too bad. the wind isn't too bad. >> reporter: how long have you been out here? >> since 3:00 a.m., yeah. the wind is saving us right now. it is not windy. >> how many breaks have we had? >> none. they work us hard. >> reporter: at least you're
smiling about it. >> yeah, they take care of us. >> reporter: yeah, and the sun coming up now over the oval in center city. the race will begin on the north side of the oval, and end here in front of the art museum steps and take people throughout center city as well as strawberry mansion, down mlk drive. you'll see a lot of closures in the city. we saw a lot of people showing up here about an hour ago, volunteers, 14-year-olds, wearing sweatshirts. they didn't seem to be bothered at all by the cold. you'll hear from them coming up in half an hour. and if you're going to be heading into the city, remember those road closures, many should be open between 10:30 and noon, that's after the race. reporting live in center city, deanna durante, nbc 10 news. and new from overnight, a man is dead after being shot outside a nightclub in philadelphia's kensington neighborhood. police say the 26-year-old man was shot in the chest outside the nivel nightclub at b street and allegheny avenue. it happened around 2:45 this
morning and there are no arrests. two philadelphia 7-elevens were robbed within half an hour of each other and now police are trying to figure out if they're connected. around 1:30, robbers pistol whipped a worker at the store on frankfurt avenue in holmesburg, taking cash and cigarettes. then around 2:00 a.m., an employee was pistol whipped inside a store at bridge and thompson streets in bridesburg. investigators are working with that store to confirm what was stolen there. so far, there are no arrests in that case. an off duty philadelphia police officer shot and killed a robbery suspect. and this morning investigators believe that shooting was justified. the officer intervened while the suspect was robbing an eld arealare ly man on broad and chew streets. the two men exchanged words and police say the man refused to drop his weapon. >> at that point, the suspect
turns toward the officer, the officer engages him, i believe there is a discharge at that point in time. the suspect then fled southbound on park avenue toward chew. >> the suspect was shot in the stomach and collapsed after running away. he died just a short time later at the hospital. right now, we're working to get more information on a car crash that killed a 3-year-old child in the lehigh valley. nbc 10 was on the scene in hanover township in lehigh county. two cars collided on weaversville road yesterday afternoon. and you can see how bad the damage was. police say the impact of that crash threw the toddler from one of the cars. there is no word on the condition of the drivers or exactly what caused that accident. one week ago today an amtrak train collided with a backhoe killing two workers. amtrak is now retraining workers on basic safety rules. investigators are expected to
issue a report on what they found in the next few days. the federal railroad administration has already told amtrak to go over track safety and communication protocols. experts believe that is an indication that the with workers did not even realize the track was being reopened to train traffic. happening today, septa is making permanent schedule changes for regional rail riders. the airport line will no longer stop at the west trenton station. chestnut hill east and l trains are being run on saturday and sunday, but at new times. service will also be earlier on the lansdale, doylestown line and the paoli thorn dale line. there are more changes you can check out for yourself on our website at nbc10.com. the flyers are returning to the stanley cup playoffs. the orange and black clinched a wild card spot by beating
pittsburgh at the wells fargo center. a game you saw here on nbc 10. right winger wayne simmonds scored twice in the flyers 3-1 victory. goalie steve mason stopped 18 of 19 shots. not bad. flyers are back in the post season after missing it last year. they opened the playoffs at washington on wednesday night. today, the flyers wrap up the regular season out on long island. belgian authorities believe the elusive man in the hat has been arrested from the brussels airport bombing and now investigators say they're learning about a second planned attack. and with a national title now under his belt, villanova coach jay wright is turning to a new fight. we'll explain that next.

villanova team. >> it's been extremely exciting. we had a great time. i can't talk. i'm so proud to be part of this wonderful event. >> you can hear that pride in his voice. philadelphia has the most successful coaches versus cancer program in the entire nation. they have raised close to $11 million for their cause since 1996. and in the meantime, nova students raised money for pediatric cancer research at this dance-a-thon. they were on their feet for 12 hours yesterday. nova dance is a year long fund-raising effort that ends with this big dance marathon. it was a must win for the flyers. could they beat the penguins to secure a playoff spot? the highlights will be coming up in sports.

state's convention. aides to front-runner donald trump say they expected to lose in colorado. trump still leads cruz by about 200 delegates in the fight for the gop nomination. in the meantime, on the -- in the democratic race, bernie sanders won the wyoming caucus yesterday. the vermont senator got 56% of the vote, compared to hillary clinton's 44%. nbc news shows clinton still leading sanders by more than 200 pledged delegates. and the presidential candidates are now focused on new york, which holds its primary a week from tuesday. the two democrats campaigned in new york city yesterday. >> if we can win here, it absolutely opens the door to a path toward victory to the white house. >> we are on the path to the nomination. but i need -- i need to win big here in new york. >> on the republican side, ted cruz was in virginia trying to pick up three unbound delegates

outside now, feeling like the teens in reading and pottstown, feeling like 24 degrees in philadelphia. 19 in atlantic city and 19 in wilmington. we'll say good-bye to the freeze warning at 10:00 a.m. so freeze warning indicating that if you do have that tender vegetation out there and haven't covered it up, it is in jeopardy. yesterday looking back, how about that? 5 inches of snow unofficially in malvern. almost three inches of snow recorded in new jersey, estelle man manor. almost 5 inches in wayne. interesting day yesterday for sure and then we got these very cold temperatures today. plenty of sunshine, official sunrise up at 6:30 this morning. no clouds to speak of. you saw that nice blue sunny sky. that's really a great indication that we're going to start the ball rolling to get back into spring. but a cold start this morning, cloud s rolling in later on this afternoon. we get another frontal boundary coming in tomorrow. breezy conditions, but we are looking for sunshine and then clouds thickening. the showers, we could see a
