good morning. this is "nbc10 news today." thanks for being with us. i'm rosemary connors. it's just about 9:00 on this saturday. let's check in with meteorologist karen thomas. she is tracking the cloudy conditions outside. >> no matter where you are this morning, you have had a little bit of dryness. maybe you have had a little bit of scattered shower. it's been moving through this morning as we've been watching all morning long. right now temperatures on the mild side. 63 degrees right now in philadelphia, with mostly cloudy skies and the showers. we go to the suburbs. 58, a little cooler there with showers as well. 64 in south jersey. 60 in lehigh valley and 63 degrees in delaware. what we can expect, well, a slow drying out. that's what we are looking at. it's a pretty large system. but we are looking to get to 70 in philadelphia and close to 70 everywhere else. delaware 70 degrees. have the umbrellas handy for a good portion of the day,
especially south and east of philadelphia. simply because the system is large, it has a lot of moisture with it, and right now it is bringing quite a bit of rain right through philadelphia. parts of allentown getting rain. showers poised to move into trenton. you see here wilmington. orange and yellow here is the heavier cell moving into northern delaware. there is not a lot behind it. you see in harrisburg it's quickly moving through. over the next couple hours we anticipate scattered showers. >> karen, we are three days away from the primaries in pennsylvania and delaware. that means a weekend full of campaigning in our area for the presidential candidates. monique braxton is live in our digital operations center with a look at what they'll be up to. fill us in. >> we're learning more about two campaign stops by president clinton on behalf of his wife hillary. here is what we've learned. president clinton will appear at
rutledge school at 11:45. he'll be in ambler at 2:00. he will be joined by gabby gifford. tomorrow mr. clinton will be in winwood. mrs. clinton's campaigns in rhode island and connecticut on the weekend and in wilmington on monday for a rally at the world live cafè at the queen theater at 11:15. that it open to the public. senator bernie sanders is coming to wilmington as well for a 4:00 p.m. rally. but that's today. the free public event will be at the chase center on riverfront. doors open at 1:00. later this morning in philadelphia, sanders' supporters will rally outside city hall. they're holding a march to build local support ahead of tuesday's primary in pennsylvania. after the march supporters say they will fan out across the city to knock on doors encouraging people to vote for sanders.
volunteers will also be getting out the vote for the republican candidate, john kasich. a rally is planned for this morning at kasich's headquarters on paoli pike in chester county. kasich is far behind in the delegate count but is promising he is staying in the race for the long haul. the delaware and pennsylvania primaries are just three days away. voters in both states head to the polls tuesday the 26th. new jersey voters get their say on june 7th. we're going to tell you where donald trump and ted cruz will be coming up in the next half hour. don't go away. live in the digital operations center, monique braxton, nbc 10 news. philadelphia is getting $43 million in federal grant money as the city prepares to host the democratic national convention this summer. thousands of people will be travel to philadelphia for the dnc. the high profile event requires a level of security that hasn't been seen in this city since
pope francis visited last september. the $43 million had lep fund all kinds of security measures from a bus system for delegates and dignitaries to overtime hours or police, firefighters and paramedics. we spoke to one security expert about what it all means. >> we would probably look at an estimate of $80 million or $120 million, for example, if a dirty bomb went off. so i think this is money well spent. >> some of the money will also provide long-term equipment that can be used by local law enforcement. for more information go to the nbc10 app or to our website at nbc10.com. the democratic national convention is july 25th through the 28th. you can count on nbc10 as your place to see it all. as we lead up to the convention, remember, you can always get the latest on the planning for the dnc, the push for the delegates by tapping the nbc10 app. breaking news overseas we want to make you aware of it.
it appears north korea has fired a ballistic missile from a submarine stationed off its coast. it's unclear how far the missile went or where it landed. experts believe a successful test from a sub would make it easier for north korea to surprise its enemies, but south korea says it does not believe north korea even has an operational submarine that could fire multiple missiles. back here in our area, one person is in the hospital following a crash on the schuylkill expressway overnight. this is video from one of our traffic cameras taken around 3:30 this morning. you can see the backup there. two cars slided in the westbound lanes of 76 between the girard avenue and montgomery drive exits. one car burst into flames. first responders found a person involved in the crash in the d eastbound lanes. we're waiting to find out if that was the person taken to the hospital. fans continue to pay tribute
to a rock & roll legend prince. people gathered on the hollywood walk of fame in los angeles last night to sing and dance to his hit songs. it may take days or even weeks to learn what caused the death of prince, but we do have a few more details about the investigation. here is what we know. authorities say there were no obvious signs of foul play and they do not suspect suicide. prince was last seen alive on wednesday night. staff members at his estate in minnesota found the 57-year-old unresponsive in an elevator on thursday morning. an autopsy was done yesterday, but the results haven't been released yet. again, it could take weeks. musician and close friend sheila e. is remembering prince as a driven and generous man. take a listen. >> he gave his all in everything that he did, and the way that he gave his all in writing songs and performing, the fans meant everything to him. >> funeral plans for prince have
not yet been finalized. ♪ ♪ >> you can pay tribute to prince by watching his classic film "purple rain" this weekend. amc theaters will play the move from today through thursday. in our area catch it at the theaters in cherry hill, hamilton and nieshaminneshaminy. a ninth grader is inspiring others to climb tall buildings for a good cause. duncan lew is fighting leukemia. he moved here from seattle to philadelphia. the event has people climbing 1100 steps, up 43 flights to the top of the comcast building, the city's highest skyscraper. the event raises money for blood cancer research. as you can see, my colleague nbc10's george spencer was the emcee this morning.
the flyers are bringing their quest for the stanley cup back to philadelphia. the team won game five against the capitals last night, pushing the series to game six. huge night for goalie michal neuvirth. he had a career high 44 saves. the flyers had only 11 shots in the game, the fewest by a winning team in the playoffs in 18 years. but they won. the flyers shut out the caps 2-0. now the team looks forward to being home, to being on their home ice tomorrow. more on the flyers' win is coming up in the next half hour in sports, plus we've got the next game right here on nbc10. join us for a live flyered up pregame show at 11:30 tomorrow morning and game six starts at noon. three children survive a shooting spree that took the lives of eight of their family members. now this murder mystery has a community in ohio on edge.

chester county, moving soon into wilmington. showers continue this morning as the system is really not much behind it, but it's getting ready to sort of continue to push right off the coast. as it does we can expect more scattered showers moving through the area. so here is the time line in philadelphia. 66 at noon. 71 by 4:00. 8:00 finally the showers getting
out of here. we'll have to give some time for the system to move out of the burbs. still temperatures not doing too badly. cooling off to 59 by 8:00. here in the lehigh valley, mainly clouds for a good portion of the day. peeks of sunshine towards the evening hours and then clearing, clouds he getting out of the lehigh valley, 58 degrees. to cool there. i'll be back with a look at your 7-day plus and we'll talk about when the next chance of rain comes into the weather picture. climbers are returning to everest by the hundreds this year, despite two disasters. it was just about a year ago that an earthquake brought tons of snow and ice crashing down on the mountain. 18 hikers were killed, and the base camp left in ruins. the year before, 16 guides died in an ice avalanche. many worried that climbers would not return because of the dangerous conditions. but base camp is once again a village of tents and huts.
the nepalese government ordered official to be stationed at the base camp. also, a fund has been created for the families of the guides who died in those two disasters. the 2016 osprey season is here, and you can watch all the action live, 24 hours a day. it's like a reality show for our feathered friends. just ahead we'll tell you where you can check out this family of osprey. do you think when you are president you'll be paid as... much

action thanks to a new osprey camera at the jersey shore. officials launched this webcam featuring an active osprey nest at the docking slip at the louis ferry terminal in cape may. this pair of osprey has returned for the third straight season. last year they had two babies here. the year before they had three. now your nbc10 first alert weather. >> all right. hopefully you have your umbrellas handy this morning. we'll check temperatures first in our neighborhood forecast. specific neighbors and where the temperatures are landing. of course, your 7-day forecast is at the bottom of the screen, so check that. then we'll go to radar and show you just where the rain is. we know rain is falling in philadelphia. 62 degrees there. a little cooler to the pennsylvania suburbs. 60 in the lehigh valley. 63 in delaware right now. closer in. bringing you out to the western suburbs.
west con township, 56. the temperatures have dropped a bit. we've been tracking temperatures mainly in the lower 60s, but as the rain pushes in closer temperatures have dropped. west bradford township, 57. so the clouds are thick for sure. as we go closer over to new hope, 59 degrees. we have 62 in ben salem. fort washington, 59. you see that the temperatures now mainly in the upper 50s. we are talking scattered showers. now we've got some heavier rain moving in as the system is pushing closer to these areas. here is radar. it is showing us just where the rain is. this band of precip was actually in central pennsylvania, just a little while ago. it's a quick-moving system. the front is moving very rapidly. so as it does it's filling in the area with some showers and some heavier rain. we're actually seeing heavy cell
just moving out of southern chester county. but we have got rain right now falling in allentown as well as moving into trenton and parts of northern delaware right now getting some rain activity. so this is the system that will continue to push through the area over the next couple of hours. so have the umbrellas handy. future cast showing us just when it will clear out. by lunchtime we've got just about everybody here, philadelphia, northeast and south of philly, covered in some sort of rain. we've got heavier rain falling at that hour down here in atlantic city. as we move through time, future cast telling us it's 3:00 mainly drying north and west of philly but still rain falling along the shoreline in south jersey. by the evening hours the system does make its way completely off the coast, really just leaving the possibility of a popup shower or two along the shoreline. for the most part the weekend is a 50-50 split for just about
every area. you can see here, saturday in the first column, sunday in the second column, we'll even give you monday just to take it all the way out and have a lot of fun. philadelphia, though, high temp today 69 or 70 degrees. tomorrow, really the dry day across the board. then look at the temperatures soaring, really, most everywhere come monday with the exception of the jersey shore. you see that by monday, 68 degrees at the jersey shore, really the cool spot. so we're looking at showers today. then some clearing. and then we're looking for sunshine and dry conditions for our sunday. not looking too bad anyway. rosemary. >> we'll take it. thanks, karen. checking in on this weekend's wednesday's child. a bright teen hoping to find a forever family to love and support her throughout life. nbc10 introduces us to shanise.

voters are recovering today. i'm sure grateful to be home. the coast guard had to rescue them when their boat got stuck in the mud at the jersey shore. the crew hoisted the men to safety, obviously filming it the whole time. their boat ran aground on the maurice river. they were first spotted thursday afternoon but they wanted to wait for a high tide to see if they could refloat their boat. it didn't work. rescuers on boats were not able to reach them. that's why a helicopter had to swoop in and pull them to safety. they're doing just fine. people living in an ohio community are on edge this morning after the murders of eight members of the same family and the killer or killers still on the loose. police say the victims were
targeted and shot execution style at four different homes within a 30-mile radius in pike county, ohio. three children were spared. >> this is just, you know, it's heartbreaking. the one mom apparently was killed in her bed with the 4-day-old right there. >> authorities say preliminary information suggests that none of the dead committed suicide. this has led police to warn residents that a killer could be on the loose. they've also met with relatives of the family members to warn them to be extra careful until they make an arrest. let's head to georgia where police say a man suspected of killing five people has been found dead after apparently taking his own life. according to authorities the suspect shot three people at one location last night and then killed two others about a mile away. police believe the gunman went
on shooting spree after he found out his wife was filing for divorce. it was a no-pay friday for workers in atlantic city. they have not had a paycheck in two weeks, and they won't be getting another one until may 8th. the city hosted a free barbecue for workers to try to boost morale. employees tell us it's been difficult to adjust to getting to just one paycheck per month. >> we do things every day a certain way, and it's time to think about we need to slow down because the bills keep coming in regardless. but the monthly check -- the check comes once a month. >> the mayor tells us that the city did get a bit of good news yesterday in the midst of their financial struggles. the casinos plan to hire about 2400 workers this year. coming up in the next half hour, we're going to look at

back to "nbc10 news today." i'm rosemary connors. it's just before 9:30. to the weekend weather first. meteorologist karen thomas is tracking some rainy conditions outside. karen. >> not ideal for our saturday morning, right? we don't like to wake up to rain on a saturday. boy, it is raining right now. looking live at citizens bank park. you can see the droplets on the lens but if you look straight through it, you can actually see the rain teeming down. that's going to continue for a little while longer as the cold front continues to move through the area. so what we can expect here in the way of a time line -- right now 62 with the rain in philadelphia. temperature will be bumping, but you see towards the afternoon that's when we start to dry out because the system is quick-moving. and it will continue to push right on through allentown, trenton and philadelphia. as i have been mentioning, we've got sort of a larger cell here in southern chester county. a little heavier rain there for
sure. that's going to be pushing right on through northern delaware in the next hour or two. so the system is slowly but surely making its way through. we are going to have a bit of dryness on the back side there as it pushes in. we are going to anticipate clouds will hang around, but we are going to say good-bye to the showers eventually as we move through our afternoon. you can see your 7-day forecast right here at the bottom of the screen. and when i come back i'll talk to you more about what our sunday forecast will have this store. rosemary. >> thanks, karen. decision 2016 has the presidential candidates on a campaign blitz in pennsylvania and delaware in these three days before the next round of primaries. nbc10's monique braxton is live in the digital operations center with details. >> donald trump will be back in our area on monday. he is scheduled to have a rally at west chester university. now, today he is in connecticut, while ted cruz is over in
pittsburgh. yesterday, as you know, he was in the eastern part of the state, making his way across pennsylvania in hopes of adding to his delegate total. voters in five critical states go to the polls on tuesday, and yesterday cruz met with supporters at the hamilton family restaurant here in allentown. he once again noted pennsylvania is a key battleground state in the race. >> donald trump loses to hillary clinton in the general election in pennsylvania. hillary and i are tied in pennsylvania. and in november we're going to win pennsylvania and beat hillary clinton, and that's one of the reasons so many republicans are uniting behind this campaign. >> and trump visited kent county, delaware, yesterday. the republican frontrunner rallied supporters at the state fairgrounds in harrington. he talked about bringing jobs b back to the united states, lowering taxes and taking on hillary clinton. v

"meet the press" comes your way at 10:30. this morning a man is under
arrest after police caught him slashing tires in south philadelphia. ten or more cars were damaged. this happened overnight at 17th and christian streets right around 2:00 in the morning. as you can see, police did recover a knife at the scene. philly police are also looking for the man who was pepper sprayed by a teenager after he tried to sexually assault her. you can see the suspect caught on this surveillance video in south philadelphia. the 19-year-old victim's hand is on his throat. she fought back. she told police early wednesday morning that the man tackled her on wharton street and then pulled her dress down. she pepper sprayed him and hit him in the throat before he ran away. a neighbor, ashley forte, was nearby and heard the young girl screaming and called 911. >> we heard it start. it went away for a little bit and then it got really close. these intruders have to be taken down. and it's great that it's a woman and she actually saved herself from what could have potentially
been very bad for her and her family. >> the 19-year-old victim did suffer minor injuries but is expected to be okay. on monday, a town hall meeting will be held for the wilmington community where a high school student got into a fight at school and died earlier this week. delaware's governor, attorney general and wilmington's mayor are expected to be there for the meeting. in the meantime today, a group devoted to peace will hold its regular street meeting in front of the school where the teen was killed this week. the wilmington peacekeepers will be in front of howard high school at 11:00 this morning. parents and students are still waiting for answers related to the death of amy joyner-francis. they gathered last night to plead for justice. the teen was involved in a fight inside a school bathroom on thursday morning before she died. >> for this to happen, it's just heartbreaking because she never looked for trouble in any way.
she always would, you know, make sure everybody was okay, make sure everybody got along. >> prosecutors have confirmed they are interviewing people, students, and they're also looking at social media communication, but they won't announce any charges until their investigation is complete. president obama gets a royal greeting from a tiny to the in his pjs, and he stole the show. it's all ahead on "nbc10 news today."

cloudy and soggy out there this morning. we've got another check on our neighborhood forecast this morning. in philadelphia just about everywhere on our camera lens you can see the raindrops. with the exception right now lehigh valley. we've got a little bit of break in the rain, but you can still see the heavy cloud formation in the sky in our live shot. 61 degrees in philadelphia. 58 degrees out in the pennsylvania burbs. 65 in south jersey. 60 in the lehigh valley and 63 in delaware with those showers. so this is what we can expect today for high temperatures. let's hope we get here, right? 70 degrees. we are anticipating that this clearing will happen west to east with the cold front moving through. so even some peeks of sunshine late day possible in philadelphia as well as the
burbs here. so pumping the temperature up to about 66. 68 in south jersey. 67 in the lehigh valley and close to 70 in delaware. we need the sunshine for sure. a lot of folks are waiting on the sunshine. stay tuned. i'll let you know when we can expect it. today president obama toured the globe theater in london. the theater is a replica of the circular open-air playhouse that william shakespeare designed in 1859. the tour came on the 400th anniversary of shakespeare's death. if you got to meet the president and first lady, what would you wear? a tux? fancy dress? not your pajamas. that's what the future king of england decided on. 2-year-old prince george was already dressed in his pjs and robe when he was given a bedtime
extension to meet the obamas and thank them. the little prince thanked the first family for the rocking horse they gave him when he was born. closer to home -- still a cute kid. just as cute as prince george. right now in philadelphia runners and walkers of all ages are raising money to fight blood cancer. the miles for myeloma 5k started at the pet museum in fair park. matt delucia helped kick off the event. 9:42 on this

good morning. i'm meteorologist karen thomas. we'll go ahead and take a last look at our neighborhood forecast. first we'll start with temperatures in and around philadelphia. 61 in philly right
now. lehigh valley 60. 58 in the burbs. 60 in delaware. closer in, we'll show you where we are in south jersey with temperature readings still on the mild side. we saw a bit of temperature cooloff, if you will, north and west of philadelphia because of the rain-maker pushing through. but we're still seeing temperatures holding fairly steady in the mid to lower 60s in and around south jersey. we move further north. still in the 60s.
60 in princeton right now. 62 degrees in pem perton. 64 in coyle field. scattered showers the weather story and rain too. some of it heavy, moving through the area at this hour. radar showing us just where the system is. as you can see, there really isn't much rain behind it, but as we move closer to philadelphia we can easily see that the large area of rain is here. we can also see that a good portion of the front, the precipitation anyway, has already moved off the coast. there is still the residual rain just behind it. we zoom in and show you just where the rain is. you can see allentown, showers moving through. trenton, moving through. it's raining in philadelphia as well. and so there is a heavier cell right here just pushing out of southern chester county. that will be making its way into western delaware county. hang on to the umbrellas as we
move through the early part of our saturday anyway. future cast showing us that by 12:30 another area of rain is possible, moving right on through philadelphia and trenton. it's a cold front. you can see it's just pushing down here, laying straight down to the southeast. so, by 3:30 we still have residual shower left over along the shoreline before the entire system gets out of here by this evening. but the drying should happen from west to east. so areas west of philadelphia would be drying out quicker than along the shoreline. here is what we're looking at for today in south philadelphia. 70 degrees. we've got a little bit of everything. hopefully we'll get the peeks of sunshine later on today. out in the burbs it's looking like mainly rain as that system just sort of lags and lingering showers in the lehigh valley as well. we'll go ahead and show you south jersey. temperatures today 69 in

he came in as a stray which is hard to believe. he is so loving and adorable. >> friendly. so funny. looks like he has a little pomeranian in him. >> i think so. >> he looks similar to my dog at home who is not as friendly.
>> he has a big dog's personality. very confident and outgoing snu think he may be a little bit younger. a year or so. >> maybe even younger. plenty of time allowed to really bond with him. >> absolutely. amy, you guys have important event, campaign effort, fund-raising effort coming up all tied to the blue cross broad street run which we are proud sponsors of. >> a lot of the dogs at the shelter, like a lot of people know, aren't these guys. they're big dogs. sometimes they're at the shelter for a month or maybe longer. they have to be in kennels that right now are old and worn out. they're holding disease a little more than they should. so we need new kennels. we have a new campaign called the action pack takes on broad. there is a group of ten dogs, the action pack, that are symbolically running the broad street run. ten dogs for ten miles. our goal is to raise awareness and funds to help all the
homeless pets in philadelphia. over 9,000 dogs come into our facility every year. not a lot of people know that. a lot of people want to help. this is the perfect way to help. if they want to join us and run with us, they can do that. if they want to donate, that would be a humongous help. we need over $200,000 to replace these kennels. it's very important. the kennels will help the dogs be healthier, happier, and be adopted quicker. >> people want to help out. not everybody can take a pet home. this is something they can do. >> donate, run. we're having a party at frankfurt hall from 12:00 to 2:00. happy hour prices. come out and meet the action pack, maybe take home a new best friend or have a good time with fellow animal lovers. >> currently on the screen we have the information for act philly if you want to go to the shelter today if you're interested in adopting seroppy,
