nbc 10 news starts now. deadly church shooting. one man is dead after shots were fired during sunday services at a montgomery county church. two different candidates with a shared mission. stopping the republican front-runner. ted cruz and john kasich form an alliance to try to deny donald trump the nomination. and barber shop politics. this election season, that's one of philadelphia's most trusted neighborhood haircutters. a new do also comes with a civic lesson. it's 4:30, this is "nbc 10 news today." i'm tracy davidson. let's get right to meteorologist bill henley with his first alert neighborhood forecast, a look at the conditions right where you

live. bill? >> tracy, this is what's going on right now. temperatures have been cooling down under clear skies. in the lehigh valley, 47 degrees right now. the numbers will come down a little more at 7:00. 46 degrees. then a quick warmup today. it will be a warm one this afternoon at 61 degrees. that's this morning. by this afternoon, the temperatures will be well into the 70s. look at the warmup. mostly sunny skies for south jersey. 76 degrees. cooler right along the coast, 62 at the jersey shore. while the lehigh valley and delaware warm into the middle 70s this afternoon, upper 70s for philadelphia at 77 degrees.ç seven-day forecast is scrolling at the bottom of your screen. it is going to be turning warmer for tomorrow, election day. but it will come with some showers and possibly some thunderstorms, too. have a look at those when i'm back in ten minutes. right now, let's get your first alert for traffic with katy zachry. katy? >> hi, bill, i'll start out with good news. for those of you who take the vine street expressway in the

morning, you can see things -- well, our graphic is still waking up. we'll give it some time. the vine street expressway is open, no overnight construction closures. average speeds as you may have been able to tell are in the high 50s and low 60s. that's great news if you're taking the vine through center city philadelphia. taking a look at your other majors throughout pennsylvania, 76, 95 and 476, everything in the green, average speeds around the 60s right now. no issues to report on the majors in pennsylvania, new jersey or delaware. taking a closer look at 95 up in the northeast part of the city, you can see at academy road, light traffic. this stretch typically gets backed up around 6:37. i'll keep my eye on it. >> thanks for the update. one last push. today candidates on both sides of the political aisle will meet with supporters ahead of tomorrow's delaware and pennsylvania primaries. and for one of the republican candidates, a stop at a south philadelphia diner is also a chance to talk about a new

alliance to stop the party front-runner. nbc 10's matt delucia is live at the penrose diner to explain that. matt, tell us what this is about. >> reporter: well, tracy, governor kasich is due here at the penrose diner today at 10:00 a.m., shaking hands, talking with the voters here, making a bit of news in the past 12 hours as well, announcing that he and ted cruz are teaming up in a matter of ways to try to take down donald trump. kasich's campaign put out a statement saying the goal is to have an open republican convention. to do that, the strategist says they will shift resources out west, continue the campaign and giving ted cruz a clear path to win indiana. the hope there is to keep trump under the 1,237 delegates needed to clinch the nomination. ted cruz says they will let kasich fight for new mexico.

donald trump went on twitter, wow, just announced that lyin'ted as he calls him and kasich will collude in order to keep me from getting the republican nomination. desperation. the fight for the nomination ties on a whole new twist all within the past 24 hours. we're closer to 24 hours of the polls opening in pennsylvania and delaware. a group of students is planning to protest a visit, saying that trump is free to speak his mind but not at our campus. first up, john kasich here at the penrose diner, scheduled to be here at 10:00. it will be interesting to see if either candidate make any mention about what has happened in the past 24 hours. live in south philadelphia, matt delucia, nbc 10 news. tonight the dem[jpáic candidates for president will be in philadelphia to speak to voters on the eve of the pennsylvania primary. msnbc will host back-to-back

town halls with hillary clinton and bernie sanders. the candidates will take questions from voters at the national constitution center. chris hayes will moderate the sanders town hall. rachel maddow has the clinton town hall tonight at 9:00. hillary clinton is getting a boost in pennsylvania from governor tom wolf. the yesterday, the governor joined clinton at a baptist church in juniata park. clinton said one of her reforms is a need for criminal justice reform in philadelphia. >> i visited a program here in philadelphia ten days ago, doing the work of trying to help young men to get the skills they need, get the opportunity to apply for a job. >> clinton also spoke with the need for early childhood education and better funding for the philadelphia school district. democrat bernie sanders is

continuing his push in pennsylvania. the vermont senator campaigned in harrisburg yesterday. he's scheduled to hold a rally tonight at drexel university's athletic center. on nbc's "meet the press," sanders says he still sees a path to victory. >> the fact that we have shown that there is massive dissatisfaction in in country with the status quo. >> sanders said he and hillary are united when it comes to the possibility of a donald trump presidency. what about barber shop politics? ahead, see how haircuts in philadelphia are quickly becoming the ideal time to talk about the election and the importance of casting your vote. and worried about water. just about 100 days away from the summer olympics in rio. ahead, hear about rio's push to clean up polluted water before the games.

now your nbc 10 first alert weather with meteorologist bill henley. >> if you're heading out this morning, we're doing fine. chilly to start with. a live view from the comcast center in center city. once the sun is up we'll see a lot of it, a big warmup. at the bottom of the screen, that's your seven-day forecast rolling. nothing to show you on the radar today. that ill, changing tomorrow. look at the warmup, 70 degrees by 1:00, well into the 70s as the day goes on. the pennsylvania suburbs, 50 degrees. we'll see scattered clouds later in the day. 63 at 11:00, then into the 70s by 3:00 this afternoon. and the lehigh valley is in for lots of sunshine, too. 47 degrees with the wind at 4 miles an hour. 1:00, stronger at times in the

lehigh valley. actually it's the south jersey area that will see a bit more wind and the temperatures will be climbing in south jersey, into the 70s by 1:00 this afternoon. that's a 9 mile-an-hour wind gusting to 15 miles an hour at times this afternoon. a few more clouds during the late afternoon hours. and so the south, delaware also going to see a nice warmup with sunshine. it will be warming into the middle 60s by 11:00. 70 degrees by 1:00 this afternoon. right now, 47 degrees. that's what's happening today hour by hour. at the bottom of the screen, the seven-day forecast. we'll take a look at the rain that's heading in for election day for tomorrow when i'm back in ten minutes. tracy? >> thanks for that. see you then. let's check your ride to work, including 422. first alert traffic reporter katy zachry has that. >> for drivers in montgomery county, there is a heads up for you. these are your drive times on 422 eastbound. you're looking pretty good between route 29 and the

schuylkill expressway. it's only going to take you about eight minutes. if you are headed eastbound between trooper and route 202, there is overnight construction that began yesterday. the right lane is taken out as a result of that construction. you could see slow-up between trooper and 202 if you're headed eastbound. westbound, no problems there. 422 is looking good. a live look outside in the philadelphiaç area, north of center city, 95 at girard avenue. traffic is picking up in both directions just a little bit but not accounting for any delays. don't worry about that. if you are headed on 95 northbound the on ramp from girard avenue is closed because of a long-term construction project. you can't access girard avenue by 95 northbound. one man shot another man in the chest, killing him. next, hear about how we know what about we know about the

4:44. good morning, ardmore. here's a look along lancaster avenue where it's 44 degrees right now. police say another church member fired shots during the 11:00 a.m. service at keystone fellowship church on stump road inç north wales, montgomery county. 27-year-old robert braxton, a member of the church was involved in an argument with another church member. at least one shot was fired. braxton was hit in the chest while other parishioners ducked for cover. >> we were worshipping and you hear three different gunshots. everybody went on the floor and

was hiding. everybody was trying to make themselves as small as possible. you could hear some screaming, some crying but it was pretty silent. >> braxton died at the hospital. the alleged shooter is cooperating with police. police said he had a concealed carry permit. prosecutors are trying to determine if the shooting was justified. until then, there are no charges. the final autopsy will be conducted today in the investigation into a massacre that killed eight family members in rural ohio. authorities said it was plea planned, it was a preplanned execution. it's clear the family was target targeted. they are now saying a marijuana grow operation was found at three of the four crime scenes. >> it was a sophisticated operation. those who were carrying it out

were trying to do everything they could to hinder the investigation. >> authorities are still trying to figure out who targeted the family. 4:46 and 52 degrees outside. officials say a shooting outside of wisconsin school prom could have been worse if police officers hadn't been stationed outside the building. police say 18-year-old jacob wagner, a former student at the school shot two teens as they left their senior prom saturday night. police were already stationed to patrol the parking lot and officers returned fire killing the gunman. officials believe wagner planned to go inside and shoot his high-powered rifle at random. both victims have been released from the hospital. president obama is in germany, touring a trade show in berlin with german's chancellor. the president is praising her handling of the migrant crisis. germany has allowed nearly a million syrian refugees to settle in germany.

>> she is on the right side of history on this. for her to take on some very tough politics in order to express not just a humanitarian concern but also a practical concern. >> president obama is in europe trying to get a controversial trade deal finalized before he leaves office in january. now to decision 2016. one philadelphia man is working to get more african-american voters to the polls. woody beale plans to use barber shops to educate young men about the importance of voting. in 2012 african-american women turned out at a rate of 9% higher than african-american men. beale plans to train 50 barbers to reach thousands of young african-american men in philadelphia and eventually expand the program nationwide. leroy is one of the barbers already involved.ç >> what's that? what's your pitch to me to get out there on tuesday and especially in november? >> listen, you need to vote if

street expressway. it is open, no overnight construction closures delaying things. if you're headed westbound between 95 and the schuylkill expressway, it will take you about three minutes. average speed in the upper 40s for drivers there. taking a look at the wilmington, delaware area, if you're traveling on 95 and going between 295 and 495, look at that, both north and southbound, ten minutes drive. no major issues to report on delaware roadways or new jersey roadways. when i see you in a bit, we'll take a look at mass transit. now your nbc 10 first alert weather with meteorologist bill henley. >> 4:49 is the time. skies are clear. live view from wildwood, new jersey. nice day brewing. we'll see lots of sunshine. the temperatures have dropped at the shore to 5 1 degrees in atlantic city. upper township is 42 while cape may, getting a milder start at 51 degrees. inland, you'll find some of the cooler temperatures, mullica township, 39 degrees. may's landing is 40 degrees

right now. we'll see a lot of sunshine today. look at these numbers. philadelphia, south philadelphia, somerton, middle to upper 70s with plenty of sunshine, especially to start with. the clouds that you're seeing coming into play, coming later in the day. neshaminy, 76 the high temperature along with malvern in the pennsylvania suburbs. reading and berks county, 76 and 74 for beth hoh bethlehem. milder at the shore, in the low 50s. right along the coast, the cool ocean water temperatures will keep temperatures in the 60s for wildwood and atlantic city. a little bit warmer, linwood is 69 degrees this afternoon. south jersey, haddonfield, glassboro, middle to upper 70s today. a light southwesterly breeze for wilmington, 76. dover, you're up to 76 degrees as well this afternoon. there's warmer weather to come. the seven-day forecast is scrolling at the bottom of the screen, not just for one area. it's for each of these locations.

it shows wet weather ahead for tomorrow. there's satellite and radar together. you can see it is completely clear right now.ç to the west, that's where you'll find the wet weather. showers moving through the midwest, through portions of iowa. doesn't look like much. missouri getting a little bit of rain. what we won't see, your eyes do not deceive you. that is snow that is falling -- >> what? >> part of the same system. we won't get the snow but tomorrow we will get the rain. the futurecast showing sunshine for today. those showers starting to make progress by 6:00 tomorrow evening. come tomorrow morning, early in the morning, we'll seat numbers come down, the temperatures will drop down into the 50s and low 60s. an occasional shower and possibly some thunderstorms to start the day tomorrow. but that's not happening today. today a big warmup, 76 degrees this afternoon. even warmer tomorrow. 82 degrees is the high temperature. will not be all-day rainfall. we'll have that early morning chance of showers and

welcome back. just a few minutes before 5:00 a.m. on your monday. i'm katy zachry with a look at the roads this morning. this is 95 at girard avenue right outside of center city philadelphia. you can see traffic is moving at a pretty good clip in both directions. no delays to report north or southbound on 95 around girard avenue. however, if you're a montgomery county driver, there are some issues in the conshohocken area that begin today that you're going to want to make note of. so your travel time is not any longer than it needs to be. details on that coming up after the break. philadelphia soul singer billy paul is being remembered as a legend in the music world. ♪ me and mrs. jones

>> best known for that 1972 hit "me and mr. and mrs. jones" paul began his music career when he was just 11 years old and went on to attend the west philadelphia music school. his manager tells nbc 10 that he lost his battle with cancer yesterday. he was 81 years old. he's being remembered by philadelphia international records co-founder kenneth gamble and leon huff. they released a statement saying in part, we immediately realized we discovered and launched one of the most unique voices in the music çindustry. billy's voice combined both jazz, r & b and soul vocals making him one of the great artists to come out of philly and be celebrated worldwide. three minutes before 5:00 right now. 52 degrees outside. we are counting down the days until the summer olympics this week, we're bringing you reports from jacqueline london who went to rio to find out how the city is preparing for the historic
