"nbc10 news today" starts now. it was two minutes, and that boat was under. completely under. >> a life-or-death plays out at sea. we'll show you the firsthand footage of a coast guard rescue following a collision on the water at cape may. rounding up prescription pills. we'll give you the details on the push today to round up drugs. we'll show you how thousands of volunteers and here in our area are giving back to the community. good morning. this is "nbc10 news today." thanks for being with us. i am rosemary connors. it's 6:00 on this saturday. we are in the 40s to start out, but we will warm up just a bit. let's take a live look outside. today is the day to get out there because the second half of our weekend, yeah, looking a little soggy. it's looking a little cloudy down the shore right now. but this will be the dry day. meteorologist michelle grossman is tracking the conditions where you live with the neighborhood

forecast. michelle. we're not going to have great sunshine today. as you mentioned it will be better than it will be tomorrow. looking at a rather cloudy day. peeks of sunshine. starting out a little bit chilly in the 40s but making it into the 60s compared to the 50s of the past few days. 49 degrees in philadelphia. 46 in trenton. 47 in wilmington. 46 degrees right now in allentown. guess what. this is pretty close to where we were yesterday. yesterday we ended up about two degrees cooler in most spots, even one degree. i'll bush that button a little harder. warmer in mt. holley and two degrees warmer in philadelphia. this afternoon we'll be 10 degrees warmer. starting out in the 40s across the area. 46 in lehigh valley. lots of clouds to start your day. mostly cloudy skies with a few peeks of sunshine. let's plan out the rest of the day for you. in philadelphia, neighborhood by

suites at the ben franklin parkway. the attack happened just after 1:00 this morning. officers arrested a man whom they tell us was staying at the hotel with the victim. take a look at this dramatic video off the jersey shore. can you imagine? the coast guard had to rescue three commercial fishermen who escaped their sinking boat after a collision on the water. the three men found themselves in a life-or-death situation thursday six miles off the coast of cape may. a man aboard a nearby boat took this cellphone video of the sinking vessel. the coast guard says the fishermen's boat hit another boat in rough seas, toppled over and then sank within two minutes. before it sank the crew managed to call the coast guard for help. rescuers found the three men inside a survival craft. >> i'm glad i captured it on video to begin with but it's something i hope to never see again. like i said, it could have had a

very different ending. >> nobody was hurt and the coast guard is investigating how the collision happened. if you have medications you're no longer using, they're just sitting in your medicine cabinet, don't flush them down the drain. today is prescription drug take-back day. you can drop off your unwanted medicines at sites all across pennsylvania, new jersey and delaware. i know we have this information on our website. this is anonymous and free. authorities then dispose of the drugs properly. today is comcast cares day. thousands of volunteers across the country and here in our area will roll up their sleeves to give back to the community. nbc10's randy gyllenhaal is live at the bridesburg boys and girls club in philadelphia. randy, you're at one of the many locations that will benefit from the work of the volunteers. tell us about it. >> reporter: this will be a big surprise for the kids who use this facility. this is the bridesburg boys and girls club. the volunteers including a group

from nbc10 and telemundo 62 will put on one of these t-shirts and get to work. there is a lot of work to do. they'll do some repainting and fixing up of the facility as well as cleaning. big surprise for the kids who use this boys and girls club in northeast philly. this is all part of the comcast cares day, part of the philadelphia company's annual volunteer effort to help local parks, rec centers and senior centers in their community. last year more than 100,000 volunteers cleaned up schools and local facilitates. comcast, of course, the parent company of nbc10 and telemundo 62. we're expecting the volunteers to show up here in just about two hours. the cleanup almost underway. for a sneak peek check out the "today" show in about an hour. they'll be broadcasting live from the boys and girls club here in brides buburg. randy gyllenhaal, nbc10 news. today the penn relays wrap up at franklin field.

the action gets going with a series of race walk events this morning at 7:00. thousands of people from around the world are in philadelphia for the oldest and largest track and field competition in the country. 6:06 right now on this saturday. coming up, a break in the case in the search for a man who opened fire on a police officer during a traffic stop. new video overnight of rescues in kenya's capital. crews are in the process of pulling out residents trapped in the rubble of a building that

collapsed. seven people are confirmed dead. a red cross official says emergency workers have been in contact with a number of people stuck under the debris. several people have been pulled out throughout the morning. the building collapsed during heavy rains last night. . [ gun shots ] >> a man accused of shooting at a pennsylvania police officer during a traffic stop is now in custody. according to the authorities, trev bowie jackson seen in this police car dash cam video shot an officer at point-blank range. this happened in northern york county. the shooting happened back in november. somehow the bullet missed the officer, and he was not hurt. jackson managed to get away, though, but just yesterday u.s. marshals say they arrested him in the strawberry mansion section of philadelphia. he is back in york county facing

charges. a philadelphia woman is heading to prison for driving into another woman, all related to a love triangle fight. precious coleman was sentenced to seven to 15 years behind bars yesterday. coleman pleaded no contest to attempted murder. prosecutors say she plowed her car into beatrice spence in nicetown last april. the two were in an ongoing fight over a man. the spence's leg was severed and after the accident her mother rushed her to the hospital leaving something cooking on the stove and her house burned down. on monday atlantic city's mayor addresses the financial crisis in that community. the $2 million bond payment is due monday. guardian told nbc10 the city will likely be able to come up with the money. the new report in the "wall

street journal" calls atlantic city's credit rating the worst in america. no city or town in new jersey has defaulted on its debt since the great depression of the 1930s. >> certainly understand the importance of making a bond payment, just as we understand the negative implications of bankruptcy. >> quarterly tax payments due text month are bringing in hundreds of thousands of dollars every day, but the mayor says the money may run out in june if state lawmakers cannot reach a deal on how to bail out the city's finances. tonight the commander in chief becomes the comedian in chief. >> after the mid-term elections my advisers asked me, mr. president, do you have a bucket list? i said, well, i have something that rhymes with bucket list. >> that was president obama at last year's white house correspondents' dinner. the event is tonight. it brings political heavy weights and stars together. well, he has only been in

we start out dry and then bring in showers late monday. 68. thursday into friday we bring the chance of showers still into the forecast. temperatures by saturday and sunday, upper 60s, low 70s. at least we're dry, though, and there is the sunshine finally returning ten days later next monday at 79 degrees. a tailless comet discovered two years ago may offer new clues into how our solar system was formed and evolved. research published yesterday shows the comet formed in the same region as earth and then was flung into the solar system's outer reaches as planets jostled and tried to get their positions. scientists hope this comet could end the debate into exactly how and when the solar system ended up in its current configuration. next in decision 2016 donald trump faces intense protests in california. >> they are breaking through the barrier, rushing into the front

they're breaking through the barrier, rushing into the front of the hyatt regency. >> anti-donald trump demonstrators broke down barriers at the candidate's speaking engagement near san francisco yesterday. the secret service helped donald trump avoid the protesters. during his speech to the california republican state convention trump said getting to the podium and getting through the crowds felt like crossing the border. inside he warned republican leaders that he can win the presidency with or without them. the gop frontrunner said he wants party unity but he thinks he can beat hillary clinton without it because of the voters. indiana governor mike spence endorsed republican candidate ted cruz. cruz is hoping that the governor's support will sway voters to bring him victory in the state's primary on tuesday.

>> governor pence is a strong, principled conservative leader. he has earned the respect of hoosiers and earned the respect of conservatives across this country. >> according to political analysts cruz must win indiana to have any chance at stopping donald trump for the gop nomination. in the democratic race for the white house frontrunner hillary clinton is off the campaign trail today, taking a break. her rival, bernie sanders, was on the stump in indianapolis yesterday. there the vermont senator blasted carrier and other companies for moving manufacturing jobs out of the country, out of indiana to maintain their profit margins, as he says. >> this is not acceptable. this is the kind of corporate behavior that is destroying the middle class of this country. >> polls show sanders trailing clinton in indiana as his path to the democratic nomination appears to be narrowing.

involved in a standoff into custody. here is what we know from investigators. they say the man barricaded himself inside of a home on crystal street in kensington after shooting at a neighbor. the man surrendered without anyone being hurt. route 38 in south jersey has been closed at the church road circle in cherry hill because of this accident. a car, as you can see, toppled onto its side in the middle of the road. we'll keep you posted on when this clears. take a look at this dramatic scene off the jersey shore. the coast guard had to rescue three commercial fishermen who escaped their sinking boat after a collision. right on the water. the three men found themselves in a life-or-death situation on thursday about six miles off the coast of cape may. a man aboard a nearby boat took this cellphone video of the sinking vessel. according to the coast guard, the fishermen's boat hit another boat in rough seas, toppled over

and sank within minutes. the crew did manage to call the coast guard for help before the ship sank. the rescuers found the three men inside a survival craft. >> it was a may day call over the vhf radio that there was a collision. >> the crewmen on our boat said, when they got on the scene they were hanging out of it waving to them. fortunately no one was hurt. the coast guard is investigating exactly how the collision happened. we have an update now on a deadly police shooting in delaware. authorities say a man in a wheelchair had a gun and may have used it at the time. wilmington police shot and killed him. >> drop the gun! drop the gun! drop the gun! >> that's an officer yelling to jeremy mcdole to drop his gun in baird square last september. a witness took this cellphone video. police opened fire when they say mcdole appeared to move his

hands to his waist. yesterday lawsuit says mcdole was armed and had gunshot res dew on his hand. his family claims police planted the gun. wilmington police say they need more time to sort through evidence in the case of a delaware high school student who died after a fight with other students. here is what we know. no charges have been filed yet in the death of amy joyner-francis. wilmington police tell us that they're going through 3,000 pages of data and that it takes time. we have been staying on top of this one. the 16-year-old passed away after a bathroom brawl at howard high school last week. three girls believed to have been involved in the fight are now suspended from school. this morning our team here at nbc10 is getting ready for comcast cares day. it is a national effort that

brings out thousands of volunteers each year to give back to the community. nbc10's randy gyllenhaal is live at the bridesburg boys and girls club to show us what's going on there this morning. randy. >> reporter: the volunteers are starting to trickle in here. a big surprise coming for the kids who use this facility. we have the tool boxes already out. we have some work gloves on the ground. this is set to begin in about an hour. what will we be doing today? what are the volunteers doing? >> they'll be cleaning up, painting. we're going to renovate an arts and crafts studio which will allow for hundreds of more kids it enjoy the club on a regular basis. >> you're doing bathrooms, hallways, a teen center upstairs. >> that's right. the whole idea is to make rooms that have been, you know, become storage over the years or had broken windows, fix them up and

put them back into service to serve our kids. >> reporter: this is all part of comcast cares which is the company's annual volunteer effort. this is happening all across philly and across the country. >> and it's international. we now have projects across the world. as you said, across the country. more than 50 projects here in the greater philadelphia region, with thousands of volunteers. >> reporter: these are impacting local schools, community centers. and the big note here, it's a big surprise for the kids. there is a big check coming from comcast to help these kids in this facility. >> there is. we'll leave today a check for $25,000 behind to help the club pay for some of the renovations that we won't be able to do as volunteers, the electrical and plumbing and things like that. >> reporter: this facility will look brand-new. thank you, bob. the volunteers are on their way. comcast, the parent company of nbc10 and telemundo 62. we'll have volunteers getting

this weekend marks the end of an era. after nearly 150 years elephants perform for the final time on sunday. this comes after animal rights activists say they quietly helped to change the laws where the circus travels. following their last show the elephants will pack their trunks and retire at a conservation center in florida. >> this is really in the best interest of the elephants, in the best interest of our company and in the best interest of audiences. >> scientists plan to study the elephants' blood while they're in retirement to see if it may hold the key to a cure for cancer. we are a day away from the blue cross broad street run. participants are making their final preparations today. and folks not running but who will be there right along the race route. folks who live along the race

your monday. plan on that, spespecially if you're out doing the broad street run. we may sneak in sunshine in some spots. that will help bring up the temperatures into the low 60s compared to the 53 of yesterday. tonight, same story. by 7:00, still dry for your saturday evening plans. we'll keep temperatures mainly in the 50s at that point. you still may see a little sunshine before the sun sets. then the rain arrives overnight. heavy at times. by 7:00 broad street runners getting in place. north and west looking at pockets of heavy rain but still steady rain across the area. that will be the same story in the afternoon. 1:00 green still on the map. same story in the evening. by monday morning we're still watching the chance for some rain. good news for the penn relays today. chilly day yesterday for all the runners on friday. today we'll warm it up slightly. some years you're in the 80s and upper 70s.

yeah! america's first couple and britain's royalty are in the middle of a social media throw-down. first here is what happened. president obama and first lady michelle obama posted a video on twitter teasing prince harry about bringing it at the invictus games in florida next month. then prince harry and the queen responded with their own video showing they aren't intimidated. prince harry founded the invictus games. it's an opportunity for wounded veterans to compete in athletic competitions. today it is comcast cares day. more than 6,000 volunteers from all across the country will be giving back to the community. comcast, by the way, is the parent company of nbc10, and we have a team of volunteers. and by team michelle, i mean co-workers. plenty of our co-workers are getting ready to lend a hand with projects in our area. a live look at bridesburg for the boys and girls club here will receive sprucing up today. also today, a philadelphia track and field tradition wraps up.
