philadelphia right now. those will be on and off, not an all-day rainfall. 55 degrees by 9:00 this afternoon. and a pretty good warmup. southerly winds help to boost temperatures into the low 70s while other areas stay cooler, new jersey into the low 60s and lehigh valley up to 60 degrees this afternoon. we'll go through the futurecast northbound. for cleanup, that ramp is being blocked by police activity there. here's 295 in west deptford around route 130. no problems in either direction. a 23-minute drive time, no increase there headed southbound from the 42 freeway headed to the delaware memorial bridge with speeds well into the 60s. if you're headed through
delaware, here's 95. no problems in either direction here either, northbound or southbound from 295 to 495 and average speeds into the 60s with a ten-minute trip. vai and tracy. new from overnight, weather may be to blame for a car accident that philadelphia that ended up damaging the porch of a house. nbc 10 was on the scene on tabor avenue in lawncrest. witnesses toll us a car smashed into three parked cars around 11:30 last night and the impact pushed one of the cars into a neighbor's porch. andrea cline-thomas spoke to the people living there. >> the impact, what does that sound lick? >> boom! >> it was crazy. >> very loud. really. i didn't know what it was. it was very, very loud. it actually shook the house. >> i walked inside when i heard the boom. the saw the window and the neighbor's car was in my porch and the porch was destroyed. >> medics took the driver to the hospital and we're working to find out his condition. police believe rainy conditions led to that accident.
this morning, eight people are in the hospital around philadelphia, including a 2-month-old baby after deadly crash in wissahickon. nbc 10's katy zachry is live for us outside st. christopher's hospital for children. what do we know about the accident? >> reporter: that infant girl who was brought here to st. christopher's hospital yesterday, she is still here. at last check she was listed in critical condition. good news for the two other children who were injured. they were taken to children's hospital of philadelphia. their conditions have been up graded as have the condition for the three adults taken to various hospitals throughout the area. here's video of that deadly crash scene along henry avenue near her mitt lane yesterday. accident investigators tell us the car carrying four children veered into oncoming traffic and was hit head on. two off-duty police officers stopped to help focusing their attention to the children who were injured. and a witness tells us his girlfriend was trying to help the victims.
>> she was like, people laying face down, whatever, she was like i'm shaking. like i don't know what to do. >> later, information we got from accident investigations is that two of the injured children were ejected from the back of the vehicle. this stretch of road where this happened has seen deadly crashes before. neighbors and a state rep have lobbied penndot to make safety changes to that stretch of road. police also tell us at this time, alcohol does not appear to be a factor in this crash. we'll have another live update in the next half hour. reporting live in hunting park, katy zachry, nbc 10 news. the time is three minutes past 5:00. 48 degrees outside. jury selection will begin in congressmanç chaka fattah's federal corruption trial. he's accused taking bribes and misusing campaign funds. i had co-defendants include a lobbyist and former chief of
staff. opening statements are schedule for may 16th. last week, fattah lost his re-election bid to evans. grief is gripping the family and friends of a student who was beaten to death at her high school. wilmington is remembering amy joyner-francis. yesterday loved ones and community members gathered for visitation at st. paul's uame church. 16-year-old amy died last month after a bathroom brawl at the howard high school of technology. >> we're here to show love and to say they have our prayers and our support. >> kids will never learn. they've got to stop. you've got to stop. you've got to. it's just too much. >> school officials suspended three students believed to be responsible for this fight. last week wilmington's police chief said charges in the case will be coming. and we have new information this morning about why a former philadelphia police sergeant is behind bars. the department fired sergeant
francis rawls. we now know he's been held in contempt for failing to unlock his computers in a child porn investigation. federal prosecutors have a search weren't and believe the hard drives contain graphic evidence. what a run it was. >> the 2016 blue cross broad street run is now in the books. that was awesome. nbc 10 carried the event live from logan to the finish line. some 40,000 runners tackled the route, some of them for the very first time. >> i have certain things on my bucket list. this is one of them. >> i like running broad street. it's a race but more like a party. the whole city comes together for it. >> i'm just glad i finished and i finished running. >> big sense of community there. nbc 10 followed the runners on

it will come with occasional light showers during the day today. as far as fog is concerned, the worst is in coatesville, western chester county. allentown down to 2 1/2ç miles. look at hazleton and mt. pocono at a quarter mile visibility in both locations. as far as new jersey is concerned, light fog and the visibility was lower when we went on the air at 4:00 this morning in millville. just updated. now down to a mile and a quarter. just got a bit thicker. we'll see times of fog but then as the day goes on, the temperatures will climb. that's in spite of mostly cloudy skies and occasional showers. seeing light showers in the area right now, just clearing wilmington. we saw them move through bear and delaware city. the showers will be manly light during the day today. late this afternoon and this evening, that's when we could see thunderstorms develop. you'll see them to the west. look at those storms that are rolling through western pennsylvania and into central
pennsylvania right now and portions of west virginia. that's coming our way for late this afternoon and this evening. we could see strong downpours and heavy winds later this afternoon, especially in delaware and south jersey. the futurecast showing some light showers in the area at 7:00. philadelphia getting a few rain drops and then mostly cloudy. at 10:00, just dry and cloudy and a little bit dreary. we may see some breaks of sunshine during the afternoon hours. that would allow temperatures to boost into the low 70s. it will also fuel that line of showers and potentially some thunderstorm activity. that's at 4:30 this afternoon, the lehigh valley, the western suburbs and then rolling through the city and delaware and south jersey, this is where we're more likely to see those heavier storms later this afternoon. here's your neighborhood forecast for today. cloudy skies and low 70s, chestnut hill, 68 degrees this afternoon. malvern, occasional light showers and 69. in the lehigh valley, up to 67, might see a break of sunshine

this morning, the first american cruise ship sailing from the u.s. to cuba in more than 50 years is expected to arrive in havana. carnival corporation's adonia left miami yesterday with 700 passengers aboard. some protesters demonstrated against the cruise both on land and sea. the blue cross broad street run is now over and now another big event is happening in philadelphia that you might not know about. nbc 10's pamela osborne is live at independence hall for national travel and tourism week. events like this are so important for philadelphia. explain why, pamela. >> good morning, tracy. it's because of the amount of money that comes into your local economy because of those
visitors. we spoke to our friends over at visit philly. they tell us that last year, 39 million people came to the city of philadelphia. it's a huge number but not as big as this. $10 billion. that's how much money those visitors pumped into our economy. $28.5 million every single day. independence national historical park saw more than 4 million visitors which supported nearly 4,000 jobs. and this year, we're expected to see even more visitors than that. >> a lot of times like during the papal visit, people realize what a great city this is, they may never have been here before and decide to come back. so one great thing about philadelphia is that people come here and whether they know it or not, they fall in love with it. >> they're kicking off the tourism season. this is going to be a busy summer here. not only is the dnc expected to

valley forge road. bellmawr accident is still active on the 4 freeway, southbound ramp to 295. that ramp is dealing with a few spill as well. so that ramp is blocked for the cleanup. mass transit also doing great. i'll be back in the next ten minutes with another check on your morning drive. now your nbc 10 first alert weather with meteorologist billo henley. >> clouds, rain and a little bit of very light fog at the shore. this is wildwood. you can see fog there, a few showers, too. just light rainfall. 48 degrees in philadelphia. delaware is at 49 degrees and right along the shore, it's holding in the upper 40s to 50 degrees right now in ocean city. the wind, that's going to be a southerly breeze, not especially strong during the day. 7 mile-an-hour wind in wilmington. up to 10 miles an hour in dover. but with the southerly wind, it's going to help warm our temperatures in spite of the clouds and the chance of some
showers. they're already seeing scattered light showers move through the area. look to the west and you can see the storms that are rolling through western pennsylvania. and this batch the storms, there's a possibility for our area late this afternoon for delaware and south jersey. this morning, occasional light showers. mainly just cloudy. you might be able to get away with an umbrella during the day but as storms pop up, you'll want to have one handy. not expecting a lot of rainfall but by 10:30 this morning, could see 0.02 inch in philadelphia. they may roll into the evening hours. we could see brief downpours with closing of a quarter inch in south jersey. we have another day with some rain. yes, the seven-day forecast anytime you want at the bottom of the screen. here's your ten-day outlook. near 70 degrees with occasional showers today. a chance of showers again for tomorrow. can't rule out some showers on
wednesday. this is the best chance of getting away without an umbrella wednesday afternoon, 68 agrees and come thursday and friday, a chance of some more showers. by the weekend, some wet weather will be around saturday or possibly even later on sunday. it will come with warmer temperatures. it's a warmup that continues for monday, tuesday and wednesday when it will hit 81 degrees. >> temperatures in the upper 40s right now at 19 minutes past 5:00 a.m. atlantic could could make history. the mayor must make a major call for the city that's nearly out of cash. and life insurance is something a lot of people really need but not everyone has. we'll break it down, who needs it and why and how much.
today, puerto rico is expected to default on a $422 million debt payment. it would be the latest financial setback for the struggling u.s. territory. puerto rico's governor made an announcement today saying the island nation will not make certain payments today. it already has multiple previous defaults and now there's a debate in congress on how to aid puerto rico. today's national life insurance day and agent are using the occasion to educate people about who needs life insurance and who doesn't. one expert at the ad insurance quotes.com say young, single people probably don't need a

wilmington. at this time, just a few sprinkles in philadelphia. the chance of some heavier downpours is going to wait until later this afternoon and this evening when parts of the area could be in for some thunderstorms. right now, this is what we've got. lehigh valley, some clouds, rain is coming down and delaware, that's 49 degrees right now with those showers. a warmup at 8:00, then middle 50s in spite of cloudy skies and those clouds will be with us for most of the day. the pennsylvania suburbs, a bit of fog, clouds, yardley, 48 degrees by 8:00, 11:00, 52 grows. there there's a chance of light showers during the day. look for the afternoon temperatures to climb into the 60s and low 70s. 72 degrees in new jersey, interior new jersey at the shore. chillier with occasional showers at 61 degrees. if we see storms later today, they're most likely in delaware and extreme south jersey. scattered showers and 71 degrees in philadelphia. that's what's happening today.
