it's 57 degrees in philadelphia. but look at the suburbs, right now 53 degrees with rain and cool temperatures. new jersey is seeing some rain but it is the lehigh valley that's getting a break from the rain right now. still scattered showers in the area and that's a possibility during the morning hours. but as we go into the afternoon, these showers will be tapering off. 57 degrees at 11:00 and climbing. right now we're looking at 53 degrees in the suburbs and that rainfall in philadelphia will taper off this afternoon with cloudy skies, philadelphia will be cloudy through the day. in fact, each location today will see clouds hanging in there with temperatures warming into the upper 50s to near 60 degrees this afternoon. i'll go through the futurecast hour by hour when i'm back in ten minutes. let's get a check of traffic right now with jessica boyington. jessie? >> bill, we are watching the schuylkill expressway right now. this is right around girard avenue. watching some construction sites, just over into the shoulder but not interfering
with any of the lanes here. this is headed eastbound. the eastbound drive time doing okay from the blue route to the vine street expressway. a 13-minute trip. speeds into the 50s as well. watching cherry hill, new jersey also. this is route 70 on the intersection around king's highway. you want to watch intersections for slippery spots as well. there's a vehicle in pottstown on west high street and college drive. more updates when i'm back in the next ten minutes. vai and tracy. we're continuing to track the conditions on the roads. >> nbc 10's katy zachry is live for us in stormforce 10 in camden. what can you tell us? >> we've seen quite the conditions changing in the last 25 minutes. let me show you the road right now. we just got off of 676 and we are on route 30, through camden. we're making our way to pennsauken and maple shade. we've gone through parts of driving rain as we went north from deptford into camden county. we went through quite driving
rain. there was ponding on the roads, really causing drivers to have to slow down. we're making our way through camden county into burlington county. that's where the rain is steadily moving north and east. let's go to tips we have some aaa mid-atlantic. just for you to keep in mind as you make your way out this morning on to your roads for your morning commute.ç avoid flooded roads. you can easy hydroplane as we did for a few seconds or worse, even just a few inches of rain can turn your car into a boat. can give you that effect where, of course, you lose control. slow down, aloss more space between cars when you do have wet roadways. wipers -- when your wipers are on, your headlights need to be on. that's the law in pennsylvania. if you live in new jersey and delaware, you might not know that. if your wipers are on, headlights need to be on. use your brake lights as caution.
you might assume the drivers behind you, you might assume they're watching the roadways and they see ponding up ahead. they might not always do that. if you pump your brakes, you can easily alert the drivers behind you that your approaching inclement road conditions. those are tips from aaa to keep you safe this morning as you make your way out. it will be a rainy commute for many in our area. back to you guys. >> today's rain, it's time to have the nbc 10 app to keep you prepared throughout the day. find up to the minute information on what's happening in your neighborhood. 5:33. today is day two of jury selection in congressman chaka fattah's federal corruption trial. that was fattah yesterday as he went into the courthouse. the congressman is accused of accepting bribes and misusing campaign funds and federal grants. opening arguments are schedule for may 16th. authorities arrested a montgomery county high school teacher. >> they say she had sex with a
student. this is rose limuli of lansdale. police say she started having an improper relationship with a student in december. she's not allowed to have contact with the victim or other students. the district has suspended the english teacher. new information on a proposal to push back the start of the school day in new jersey. new jersey department of education is now studying the idea. state lawmakers passed a proposal last year to look into whether students are getting enough sleep. officials help the first in a series of public hearings yesterday. educators are considering delaying the start of the school day for middle and high schoolers to 8:30 or later. and not all parents are in love with the idea. >> i work early so i can get home for the kids after school. he has to be in two places at one now. am i supposed to change my work schedule, not be there after school for my kids? >> the american academy of pediatrics says children who don't get enough sleep can be
irritable and have problems with concentration and learning. today officials in delaware county formally announce that certain additional pharmacies will carry narcan. pam osborne is live in broomall. >> you can either get a prescription from your doctor or here in the state of pennsylvania, there's a standing order that says anybody can really pick up a prescription of narcan from a pharmacy that carries it. today acme is going to be one of those pharmacies. it was just a few months ago we were talking about police here in delaware county being the first in the world to carry a nasal version of narcan. as of today, everyone at home will get the same opportunityço have access to that drug to easily reverse an overdose. acme pharmacies across delaware county will have the newly approved nasal spray version available to anyone for purchase. this is a game changer for families or friends trying to
help a loved one through addiction. so far, this year, the county reports that eight people have died of a heroin overdose. in the past five years, the county says overdoses have claimed the lives of nearly 300 people. which is more than car accidents and gun violence. >> this is just the next step in our battle, if you will, our war on this epidemic. we're hoping those that get the narcan administered to them, that have had an overdose take the next step. seek treatment. >> the county has also recently announced they have addition specialists available to help connect people to treatment options, to talk through health care, any concerns like that. since narcan became available in delaware county, 250 lives have been saved. officials hope that everyone, all pharmacies will jump on board. cvs already carries narcan.

use the nbc 10 app or nbc10.comç more trouble with the law for the man known as philly jesus. this photo was taken of michael grant's arrest last night in center city philadelphia. police say grant who goes by the name philly jesus refused to leave the apple store on walnut store when he was asked by management to leave. grant is charged with defiant trespassing and disorderly conduct. he was arrested back in 2014 at dilworth plaza on similar charges. now your nbc 10 first alert weather with meteorologist bill henley. >> clouds are hanging in there, the temperatures are on the cool side this morning. but not as chilly as yesterday. we're seeing readings there in the 50s, that will warm into the low 60s this afternoon. the steady rainfall, that's here this morning. if you're heading out, don't forget your umbrella. it will be a rainy morning. we've seen steady rainfall overnight. that rain will linger into the late morning and early afternoon
hours. and i can't rule out an afternoon shower. the low clouds, they won't sob low this afternoon. the skies will be brightening. we're less than half an hour away from sunrise. a rainy morning, a few scattered showers. the temperatures will remain cool today. the cloudy skies this evening as well, they'll linger, making for a chilly evening as temperatures drop into the lower 50s. some areas will get into the 40s overnight. 57 degrees with light rain in philadelphia, south jersey is seeing 56 degrees. the pennsylvania suburbs starting to see some spots getting a break in the rainfall for the lehigh valley and the suburbs at 53 degrees. currently falling. exton is 55. st. david's also 55. nowhere near as chilly as it was yesterday to start with. the forecast is calling for morning showers. look how it dries out as we go into the afternoon for philadelphia. pennsylvania suburbs, too, 8:00 noontime, most of the showers are taking a break.
a chance of a shower in the lehigh valley, especially around lunch time. cloudy skies and 56 degrees at 4:00 this afternoon. delaware could see that midday shower as well as new jersey. at the shore, that's where you'll find steadier rainfall this morning and into the noontime hour. we'll see afternoon drying. look at those temperatures, holding steady all day long at the shore. as we have northeasterly winds once again. the rain, steady right now. there are heavier downpours. these showers are on the move. they're moving to the northeast at about 30 miles an hour. that is going to continue this morning. so we see drying off to the southwest. we will get that drying later this morning and this afternoon. the futurecast shows it at 9:00 this morning, that's rain in delaware and south jersey. and into the philadelphia area. but look as we start to get breaks. that's at 1:00 this afternoon as we go into the later afternoon and evening commute, may be a few springs in the lehigh valley. mainly just clouds in philadelphia.

cash strapped atlantic city makes its $1.8 million bond payment. yesterday mayor don guardian scraped together the bond payment after considering the negative effects on cities around the state if ac doesn't pay up. but the mayor says the city is running on fumes. >> we're trying to get through day to day. we've stopped making purchases
weeks ago. we certainly vice president replaced any staff for any reason. >> the mayor's concern is trying to figure out how to get enough money for next month's payment. state lawmakers continue to argue over potential take overplan for the city that governor chris christie supports. the effort to save a burlington county elementary school is going to court. evesham township is suing the local school district to halt the planned closing of evans elementary school. they argue they didn't submit a closing plan to planning board for review as required by law. the district voted back in march to close evans elementary next year in order to save money. >> it's freaking out families and it's freaking out friends. they've been with these kid for years and now one will go to n vanzant and one will go to jaggard. a philadelphia police officer is back at work nearly
three years after he was shot and almost killed in the line of duty. the department shared this picture of edward davies with his son holding a sign that reads 993 days later, first day back to work. he'll be working in the advanced training unit at the police academy. he was shot inside a feltonville mini mart in 2013. eric torres, the man who shot him, had run from a traffic stop. a jury found torres guilty of aggravated assault last year. now your nbc 10 first alert weather with meteorologist bill henley. >> 5:48. we have a rainy morning but there is drying ahead of us during the day today. rain and 5 degrees at philadelphia international. northeasterly winds will be with us not terribly strong but just enough to keep the clouds in place and to keep temperatures cool. warming only a couple degrees by 2:00 this afternoon. clouds will hang in there but we should get a break from the rain later this morning and this
afternoon. there's still a chance of a shower, certainly not an all-day rainfall. it is part of a rainy week and there are more chances of rain coming for us. today, likely rainç showers th morning and still a few showers in the afternoon. but each area, philadelphia, allentown, atlantic city and dover, these are the chances of rain for the next five days. the chances come down quite a bit for wednesday and thursday in each area. but everybody's going to get a higher chance of rain for friday. that's when we'll see steadier rain just before we go into the weekend. keep the umbrella handy. right now, the rain. from d.c. through philadelphia and new york, the steady rain is in delaware and south jersey. some isolated spots where it's coming down heavier in gloucester and camden counties while it is dry right now at this time, for berks county. you can see there are showers on the way. that is a temporary situation. as far as those heavier showers that are in south jersey, they are on the move, moving to the
northeast at 30 miles an hour. they're not going to last that much longer. the temperatures, they're parked in the 50s right now. 51 degrees, lehigh valley, allentown, will be a chilly, cloudy day too. warmer near 60 degrees this afternoon. the steady rain tapers off this afternoon. for tomorrow, a chance of scattered light showers. you saw that chance come down for tomorrow and thursday. there's the steady rainfall likely on friday before we start drying out on saturday. sunday, mother's day, we'll get sunshine but there's still a possibility of a shower, maybe even a thunderstorm. drying out and warming up starting on monday. 76 degrees. look at tuesday, wednesday, thursday, nice dry weather and warmer as well. the ten-day outlook every half hour. bill, thanks for that. ten minutes before 6:00. let's get you to work on this rainy wet tuesday morning. >> let's check in with jessica boyington who's looking at the boulevard for us this morning.
>> rainy -- if i tried to do that, i couldn't have done that. rainy and wet this morning. route 1, the boulevard, around wissahickon avenue. got all those words right. no problem in either direction. just a wet commute. rain comes out from underneath the cars, there's puddles, ponding and the on and off ramps are particularly slippery. we have seen a few problems there as well. we're seeing a two or three-minute increase on the southbound side. nothing yet really from woodhaven road to the vine street expressway. speeds into the 50s. out in horsham, there's that vehicle fire scene that's active on lower state road and squire drive. moving over into new jersey, out in westville, there's an accident on 295 northbound around exit 24 at route 45. the left shoulder is closed. traffic is still moving by the scene. no big delays around this accident scene right here on to 295. vai? >> all right, thank you, jessie.
good morning, everyone. jessica boyington with your first alert traffic. right now we're watching route 309 around route 202. another one of those intersections looking slippery this morning. this is pretty much what all of your majors and back roads will look like this morning with a slippery commute under way. more updates when i'm back in the 6:00 hour. five minutes before 6:00 right now. new video of a fire rescue in california. take a look at the save from a perspective of a firefighter's helmet cam. >> hey, chief, found two victims. >> four kittens in all were rescued from a burning wood pile outside a budding in northern california. the firefighters discovered the animals as they tried to stop the fire from spreading. they doused the kittens with water to get firefighting foam off of them and thenç reunited them with mom who turned up during the cleanup operation. one new castle county school
could soon stop using their mascot. the district school bird will get the final say. the mascot committee voted to work with the native american community to find an acceptable replacement. it applies own toy the that name, not the logo. high schools in new castle county get to experience how dangerous it is to text and drive without the deadly consequences. >> at&t took their it can wait campaign to due upon the high school yesterday. a virtual reality simulator showed the students how quickly things can go wrong when you look down to send or read a text. >> it shows when you're looking at your phone, you're not the only one always moving. you have to sort of -- you have to pay attention to one thing at
