nbc 10 breaking news. that breaking news, a jackknifed tractor-trailer that's causing big backups on i-95 northbound the academy. right now you're looking at it live. we'll show you what's going on and how to get you around it. a look at the shore where high tide will roll in in the next hour or so. and the flooding concerns last until tomorrow morning. and a rainy end to a rainy week as you take a look at the first alert radar. sunshine is coming your way this weekend. and the @eq rages on in canada, thousands of people are now being air lifted from their homes as flames continue to swallow up cities. it's just after 6:00, friday morning, 52 degrees outside. reduced visibility and rain. good morning, this is "nbc 10

news today." i'm tracy davidson. >> i'm vai sikahema. >> we're always talking about the balance we always have about weather, especially because if you own car washes it's not good but you might be a farmer. rain is terrific, right? let's get right to nbc 10 first alert meteorologist bill henley who has the neighborhood forecast. bill? >> until this week we had been unusually dry. today, the rainiest day of all. it's already going. rain coming down in philadelphia. temperature at 51 degrees. steady rain through this morning and into this afternoon. temperatures parked into the very low 50s. some heavier downpours this morning in delaware. that's frawley stadium getting much-needed rain. temperature at 51 degrees. right on through this morning into this afternoon. the rain is going to continue pushing onshore. look at the suburbs, seeing heavier downpours in the pennsylvania suburbs and philadelphia and for the lehigh valley, and most of the rest of the area, a light rain right now. those had heavier showers in delaware, new castle county and into kent county at this time.

at the shore, that's light rain but a steady rain for cape may, atlantic city is seeing showers with more heavy rainfall just offshore. the flood threat, a meaner chance of flooding this morning. a greater chance this evening. all day long, cool, 40s and 50s to start with in delaware it's 50 degrees, odessa, 51 in wilmington. a preview at the bottom of the screen with the seven-day forecast. when i come back, a closer look at the flood threat for today and into tonight at the shore and the delaware beaches and also your weekend forecast. let's see how the roads are looking, jessica boyington has your first alert traffic. >> bill, we're watching big delays on 95 right now. that's because there's a jackknifed tractor-trailer on the northbound side around academy road. so now they're zooming our cameras around here. these are our cameras stationed around cottman avenue. a 42-minute drive time northbound from the vine street

now. big delays on 95 headed out of township, police department 55 on the southbound side. road. the right lane is close. small delays behind that as well, vai and tracy. >> you just heard bill say we're all going to see rain this morning. if you live at the shore, flooding could be an issue. >> nbc 10's pamela osborne is live in ocean city this morning where high tide expected between 7:00 and 9:00 this morning. good morning, pam. >> good morning. that's right. for anyone who will be driving along the coast today, expect that rain to maybe impact your commute this morning. now, we're at 3rd and bay avenue at ocean city. a man who lives inç the area stopped us, told us this is one of the spots that tends to flood

going back to that high tide, we're about an hour away from the start of that, 7:00 to 9:00 this morning. going to give you a peek at water right now. some predictions i've seen have the tide at 4.8 feet. fast forward to 8:00 tonight, that tide is expected to be at 5.6. expect moderate flooding then. because of that, there is a coastal flood warning in place for local street flooding and then later tonight, warning extends to the back bays. keep in mind, the back bays will see that high tide up to five hours later than the ocean fronts. the warning extends until 1:00 a.m. saturday morning at the jersey shore. keep in mind, if you're out sometime this evening or even this morning, they say 7:30 until 9:30 will be when it's at its worst tonight. if you see barricades, flooding on the roadway, your best bet is to turn around. it only takes about a foot of

water for you to lose control of your vehicle in floodwater. we certainly don't want that to happen. keep an extra eye out. allow yourself plenty of extra time to get yourself where you need to go this morning and then again later tonight. reporting live in new jersey, i'm pamela osborne. bill will be tweeting updates this morning so you can stay on top of the forecast. 6:06. chased and attacked a woman in philadelphia. police found a pitbull biting the woman. here's what happened next. >> that female jumped on to the hood of the police car when the police arrived on the scene in an attempt to get away from the dog. >> in order to stop the attack, officers shot the dog, killing

it. the woman is recovering at the hospital. internal affairs is investigating. state prosecutors in delaware will now decide whether to file charges in the death of a wilmington teenager at her school. 16-year-old amy joyner-francis died last month following a fight in a bathroom at howard high school of technology. the school suspended three students, police had hoped to announce charges by the end of last week but they said it took longer than expected to sift through thousands of pages of evidence. police turned over the results of their investigation to the state attorney general. annan mate who broke out of a new jersey prison remains on the run this morning. officials say they believe arthur buck is the no longer in the barnegat township area where they had been look for him since he was spotted on wednesday. he escaped from a facility in winslow township wednesday morning. we learned he once served manslaughter charges for killing a 10-month-old baby.

skyforce 10 flew over the water near chestnut street last night where the fire department confirmed an oil sheen on the river. this is the same area of the river where hazmat crews investigated an oil sheen on monday. the oil stretched about a quarter mile near the walnut street bridge. authorities are trying to find the source of the oil. canadian officials are air lifting 8,000 residents who had to flee their town which is being ravaged by a massive wildfire. a highway convoy will move thousands more today if it's safe enough. in all, 80,000 people have evacuated the oiltown of ft. mcmurray in canada's alberta providence. the wildfire continues to grow. it's bigger than all five boroughs of new york city. now your nbc 10 first alert weather with meteorologist bill henley. >> the sun is up but you're not going to see it. we have a steady rain onshore, cape may, new jersey. that's a rainy view from the marquis de lafayette hotel.

rain is coming down in wildwood, too. the rain will be tapering off during the day. we'll see the steadiest, heaviest rainfall this morning. this morning there's also the threat if you heard the reports this morning of minor flooding at the shore and in the delaware beaches and the back bays, but this evening, the water will be running higher, so moderate flooding is likely and widespread roadway flooding is to be expected. but other than that, it is just going to be a rainy one today. the rain streaming inland, we're seeing heavier downpours now in portions of delaware. heavier showers moving into maryland right now. newark with the heavy downpours. this motion you can see coming onshore will push all this rain to the west. it will take most of the day for that to happen which means you'll need your rain gear certainly through this morning and into this afternoon. scranton, allentown, philadelphia, wilmington, at 9:30 this morning. the rain is coming down in

atlantic city and cape may. as we go into the afternoon hours, 1:30 in the afternoon, look at the break in the precipitation. while steady rain for trenton, philadelphia and wilmington into the philadelphia suburbs and the lehigh valley. but late this afternoon, into the evening hours, though there will still be showers, it's not going to be the heavier rainfall we're seeing this morning. there will be breaks with no rainfall but still plenty of clouds to keep us chilly during the day today. rain coming down. the temperatures staying down. we should be in the low 70s this time of year for a high temperature. we'll get nowhere near that today. 20 degrees cooler than normal for philadelphia, for the philadelphia suburbs and into the lehigh valley. for delaware and south jersey, the rain steady during the day, tapering off late this afternoon for new jersey and at the jersey shore, the showers will be ending but the flood threat will be increasing as we go into this evening. but the weekend, see the breaks in the clouds, we'll see that starting tomorrow. today just cloudy. rainy and into the 50s.

a few scattered light showers saturday. not looking for significant rainfall. and during the day, we'll get breaks of sunshine to warm us into the 60s for most of the area. a little bit cooler at the shore. still seeing onshore flow but look at the weekend as it warms up for sunday,ç mother's day io the low 70s in philadelphia. that shower possibility is first thing sunday morning. then it dries out for the rest of the mother's day activities. which includes running to buy flowers and hurrying to find a great place to have brunch and going to get a card. >> check, check, check. >> how about you do it today, bill. >> probably a better idea. >> if you're heading out to buy a card right now, getting on 95 -- at academy -- >> no, don't do it. >> don't go there. >> a jackknifed tractor-trailer northbound at academy.

>> traffic still going nowhere, vai and tracy. these are our cameras around cottman avenue, approaching the scene at academy where that jackknifed tractor-trailer is blocking all the lanes. the drive times are fluctuating. it's down to 45 minutes again. the left lane is still getting by. average speeds in the teens. we're not moving at all. otherwise you'll be stuck until this situation gets under control. another serious problem in deptford township. police department activity on route 55. that's now shut down southbound around the 42 freeway. again, all lanes are closed here. take delsea drive to head south by the scene. vai. olympic athletes do a lot of endorsements. >> it's true. one athlete is selling an ad on part of his body. it's an american runner. we'll tell you that story next, all new at 6:00.

freeway. all lanes are closed. take delsea drive to head southbound by the scene. vai and tracy. now your nbc 10 first alert weather. >> let's check your nbc 10 first alert neighborhood weather, a closer look at the forecast you won't get anywhere else. >> neighborhood weather gives us a focus on specific neighborhoods that will be affected most. fill us in on where the neighborhoods are. >> the steadiest rain is in delaware and inland. we're seeing pretty good showers in delaware, too. we'll see the rain taper off this afternoon. expect a steady rain through the morning. temperatures are not moving at all this morning. delaware, 50 degrees. the suburbs, 47 and the lehigh valley, getting some rain at 51 degrees. interior new jersey, cooler there, 40s forç clayton and washington township. swedesboro, 49 degrees. farther to the north, not much change in the temperature. actually the temperatures will be pretty uniform because of all

this rain streaming inland. here you can see the heavier showers are on the move. they're still moving through delaware. wilmington into middletown and smyrna seeing pretty good downpours. the dover area as well. that's on the move, moving to the west. it will lighten up. it's lightening up in vineland this morning. at the shore, that's a steady light rainfall. all of this will be pushing inland. we'll see improving conditions this afternoon. but there's still a chance of some late-day showers. right along the coast, the potential of flooding, minor flooding this morning. moderate flooding is possible this evening. and then things will be improving over the weekend. today this is what we've got. umbrella weather for sure. philadelphia, the suburbs, the lehigh valley, parked in the lower 50s with steady rain this morning and into this afternoon. low to mid-50s in glassboro, haddonfield this afternoon. delaware, that steadier rain

will be heaviest this morning. then there's the weekend which we'll see a dramatic improvement. in fact, look at this. this is tomorrow afternoon at 1:30 in the afternoon. yes, there are a few showers, isolated showers possible but notice breaks in the clouds will finally get to see sunshine and more sunshine even later in the day. that's in the evening at 8:00. skies will be partly cloudy. there's one more chance of showers first thing sunday morning. this is a line of showers that will be swinging through the area. it will be a fast mover. brief showers first thing sunday morning. that's it. we dry out and sunshine takes over for mother's day. things are looking a whole lot better in the future. stan by with your umbrella today. you'll need it for the rainy, cool conditions. tomorrow we get the late-day sunshine and even more sunshine for mother's day. and the warming trend that starts offer the weekend continues into next week. we may get into the low 80s tuesday and wednesday. if not, we'll get close to it. 70s for thursday, friday, saturday and sunday of next

molested by jerry sandusky. trouble at the top. the most powerful republican says he's not ready to jump on the donald trump band wagon and what chris christie says he is doing to help. the sun will come out for mom this weekend. good morning and welcome to "nbc 10 news today." i'm vai sikahema. >> i'm tracy davidson. 6:31. rain rainy, cloudy, 52 degrees. let's get right to meteorologist bill henley to talk about the rain and eventual sun for mom. >> he's such a mama's boy. >> you have to please mom, vai, come on. some people love the rain. this is your day. this is going to be the rainiest day of them all. it's starting off with mainly light rain but we are seeing some periods of heavier rain move through. through it all, the temperatures will stay steady in the very low 50s in philadelphia. some of the heaviest rainfall has been in delaware. that's frawley stadium. you can see the rain drops on

the lens. have the infield covered. low 50s with rain continuing into the afternoon hours. at the shore, the rain is light but it is going to be with us for most of the morning. finally tapering off this afternoon. 5 degrees for interior new jersey and at the shore, 50 degrees with that steady rain this morning, tapering off later today. the biggest threat at the shore is for flooding. a coastal flood warning is in effect for the delaware beaches, the back bays and the jersey shore. some minor flooding this morning. we're about half an hour away from that flood threat. high tides between 7:00 and 9:00 this morning and then this evening, expecting to see the water about a foot higher. that will lead to moderate and more widespread roadway flooding. for much of the day, see the rain. there's the rain streaming into cape may. that is light rain. there are the heavier downpours moving through delaware and into the philadelphia suburbs and lehigh valley. i'll show you when it tapers off with futurecast when i'm back in

ten minutes. let's find out how the roads are being affected. >> there's a lot of problems out there this morning. first we'll touch on 95 around cottman avenue. our cameras are seeing a hard time seeing the roads because they keep being covered by rain water and have to refocus and zoom in and out. this is approaching an accident scene around academy road where there's a jackknifed tractor-trailer blocking all lanes except for the left lane. big delays, 85 minutes. high, northbound on the vine street expressway at cottman avenue. also touching on deptford township, route 55. there's police department activity shutting down 55 southbound around route 42 because of a fatal accident scene. all lanes are closed there. take delsea drive to get by. >> 6:33.

new allegations have surfaced involving former penn state head coach joe paterno in connection to the jerry sandusky sex abuse case. >> court documents show the late paterno may have known about abuse allegations against sandusky in the 1970s. a child allegedly told paterno that sandusky molested him. the court documents says there is no evidence that reports of those incidents ever went up the chain of command. now paterno's family released this statement, it says in part, through all review there has never been any evidence of inappropriate conduct by coach paterno. to the contrary, the evidence clearly shows he shared information with his superiors as appropriate. sandusky is serving a 30 to 60-year term for chald molestatimo

molestation. sandusky has a hearing two weeks from today to try to prove he was denied a fair trial. they're calling this an apparent case of road rage. pennsylvania state police released this sketch, described as a man between 40 and 50 years old. skyforce 10 was on over the scene northbound 476 at west conshohocken. that's where the shooter fired at a blue mitsubishi sedan. the bullet pierced the passenger's side door. >> fortunately for the victim, the way his vehicle is configured, the center console stopped that bullet from striking him. >> police are looking for this blue lincoln with a special red emblem on the front. we have learned that donald trump and house speaker paul ryan will be meeting to try to

work out their differences. >> he said he's not ready to endorse trump yet until he does more to unify the party. matt delucia is live in the digital operations center. matt, we've learned also someone else is getting involved. >> new jersey governor chris christie says he will reach out to the house speaker and see what his concerns are. those comments came at a news conference yesterday soon after paul ryan said he was not ready to endorse donald trump. governor christie himself has thrown his backing behind the presumptive republican nominee. he joined the campaign soon after his own run for president ended earlier this year. christie says trump has a lot of work to do to bring people together. now, donald trump said he hopes to work with ryan in the future but he's not yetç ready to support his agenda. governor christie said he hoped for a truce between the two. on another note, president bush's and former republican nominee mitt romney said they will not attend the republican convention this summer. the news did not seem to bother

donald trump who rallied sporers in west virginia. >> we have to win the general election. we cannot take hillary clinton any more. we can't take any more of the clinton stuff. which is another four years of barack obama. >> and just a couple days into his general election campaign, trump is being accused of flip-flopping on two issues. he now says he is open to increasing the minimum wage and he backed away from his plan to cut taxes for the rich. while the republicans are down to one candidate, right now there are still two democratic candidates vying for the nomination. and more states have yet to vote, including new jersey. democrats and republicans head to the polls one month from tomorrow on june 7th. now, senator bernie sanders, he's focusing on the garden state. he'll kick off a two-day swing through new jersey. he'll be here on sunday and monday. sanders will host rallies at rutgers university in new brunswick and one in atlantic city. meantime, democratic front-runner hillary clinton was

again today. that's a rainy view from wildwood. yes, the skies are brightening up but sunshine will wait until the weekend. we're watching for some flooding at the shore. the possibility of flooding this morning won't be as great as it will be this evening. we're likely to see higher tides this evening which will elevate the flood risk for the delaware beaches and the jersey shore and even the back bays as well. so minor flooding is possible this morning. some street flooding but more widespread roadway flooding is possible later today. through the morning, rainfall. some heavier rainfall in delaware. just starting to move onshore at atlantic city, you can see the rain has been heavy at times offshore but is making its move now for the atlantic city area. notice this flow, this onshore flow. that's going to continue into this afternoon. and it's eventually going to push this rainfall farther to our west. as we go into the afternoon hours, we'll start to see some dry patches come through, even though the clouds will stay. this is the futurecast, 9:30

this morning, plenty of rain in the lehigh valley, the philadelphia suburbs, delaware and south jersey, though it will be lighter at the shore. at the 9:30 hour. as we go into the early afternoon, look at the drying in delaware. still a steady rain for trenton, philadelphia and into wilmington. at that hour, some of the heaviest rainfall will be in the lehigh valley. it continues moving. by 6:30 this evening, scattered showers. much of the area will be cloudy but dry and breezy. a chilly, rainy day today for philadelphia, the suburbs and the lehigh valley. temperatures only in the low 50s. the steadiest rain this morning and into the afternoon hours. but then as we go into the late afternoon hours, we'll start to see breaks in the rainfall for delaware and new jersey. and at the shore, that onshore flow will keep temperatures very cool and give us a chance of some flooding this evening. but the weekend shows some promise. see the clouds breaking back there? that's going to happen for saturday. today just a rainy one and cool

in the 50s. into the 60s saturday. scattered shower possible, especially in the morning. isolated sprinkle in the afternoon. we'll get breaks of sunshine on saturday. then the last bit of wet weather comes through first thing sunday morning on mother's day. and not everybody is going to see it. it's likely stay dry in new jersey, the jersey shore, delaware, a better chance of showers in the lehigh valley, pennsylvania and philadelphia. that's first thing in the morning. we clear out in the afternoon. that's the weekend. there's the seven-day forecast. it's up any time i'm on the air. a seven day for each part of our viewer area. when i'm back, we go beyond the seven day with the ten-day outlook. it has been anything but a typical friday morning commute. >> let's start north at academy. >> we'll start there. we're see the most delays on 95. these are our cameras around cottman avenue on the northbound side, heading out of center city

approaching a jackknifed tractor-trailer that's belonging all of the lanes except for the lea left lane at academy. there's a fuel spill as well. that has to be cleaned up. the roads are wet as well. this is typically a 13-minute trip. in the morning time, the northbound side doesn't even see a delay. you can see we're adding on significant time to your morning commute. if you know anybody on 95 wondering while they're stuck, call them and tell them to get off of the highway right now. if you're heading out the door in the next couple minutes, take frankford avenue. you'll be stuck in some delays. leave earlier right now. a lot of traffic having to move around the area. we're watching an accident scene out in deptford township where we have police department activity blocking all lanes right now on route 55 southbound around the 42 freeway. again, now that all lanes are

of the week. we see a steady rain that will taper off some this afternoon. look at the forecast amounts. this is by 3:00 this afternoon. then at 6:00 this evening, the rain tapering off in delaware and south jersey. still a few showers, more than an inch on the ground by 6:00 this evening. topping an inch in smyrna and dover. that is today. what we will see is some sunshine for the balance of the weekend. i will see sunshine. in fact, more on sunday than on saturday. right now we're looking at cloudy, dreary conditions and the winds still coming out of the northeast. this is this afternoon. this is the forecast winds. see how they're spinning around at one point? that's the center of the system which is finally on the move. it's going to be moving out over the weekend but that is going to provide us with some rainfall inland while at the shore, we'll get breaks during the day today. cape may, new jersey, right now it's looking dreary. look at the heavier rainfall. west chester and into wilmington. it's starting to taper off

already. this line of showers is being pushed inland by those winds wrapping around that low pressure to the south. we'll be improving this afternoon. it will be a rainy start this morning, too. the neighborhoods, looking for cool temperatures an a steady rain this morning. just 53 degrees in berks county in reading this afternoon. for delaware and south jersey, late afternoon breaks and the rainfall, delaware has already seen the heaviest rainfall. now it's going to be a steady, light rainfall for most of the day with periods of moderate showers. as we go into the weekend, we'll get sunshine on saturday, more sunshine after a few showers first thing on sunday morning. this is the futurecast showing saturday afternoon. this is 1:30 in the afternoon. look at that, breaks in the clouds. we'll get sunshine in the early afternoon and in the late afternoon hours, there's still one more chance of some showers coming through first thing sunday morning. that line of showers will swing through. it will be a fast mover and it's

right-hand -- left-hand, excuse me, shoulder trickling by. you can see the massive delays behind that scene. this is 95 around cottman avenue, approaching cad a cadmy road completely at a standstill. we have an 84-minute drive time headed northbound. coming out of center city, this is not where we normally see delays from the vine street expressway to woodhaven road, average speeds now in the single digits. 9 miles per hour for the average speeds if you're headed northbound. take a few alternates, get off and take some back roads around the area. you can take frankford avenue, tacony. that might work. different cars are trying to get around the scene. we're seeing big delays out in deptford township. there's police department activity shutting down all lanes of route 55 right around the 4 freeway due to a fatal accident. take delsea drive to get by. >> coming up, a check of the day's headlines and the stories you need to know as you head out

backup on our cameras. this is cottman avenue, 87 minutes. get off the highway, take tacony street, frankford avenue. there will be backups either way. deptford township, police department is shutting down some lanes. these are live pictures from across the area. rain is falling in each part of the area. look at the temperatures. they've fallen into the 40s in the pennsylvania suburbs. 47 degrees. a dreary view from new tripoli, pennsylvania. into the middle 50s for parts of the area. steady rainfall tapering off this afternoon. delaware will warm up to 57 degrees. the low 50s for the suburbs. at the jersey shore, there's the threat of flooding this morning and again this evening.
