let's begin with meteorologist bill henley in the first alert weather center, tracking rain for some areas, bill. >> dry in philadelphia and in fact, north of philadelphia. but to the south there are clouds with showers for delaware and south jersey. they're not going to last all day. but there's a possibility we'll see more shower activity. for now, it is limited and drying out in dover. the last few rain drops have just moved to the east. you see cape may is getting that steadier, light rain. it's not all of cape may county. it does extend into southern cumberland county. shows showers are heading out to sea. a chance we'll see more scattered showers into the afternoon. cool in the lehigh valley, skies are partly cloudy. dropped down into the 40s for the suburbs and delaware. into the 50s at this hour, with a warmup in store that will have us into the 60s and with some breaks of sunshine possible, there's a chance we'll make it into the low 70s this afternoon. unionville, right now is 51 degrees. in montgomery and bucks countys,
the temperatures are in the 40s. a nice warmup in spite of mostly cloudy skies. some breaks of sunshine are possible like we did see yesterday. philadelphia, 56 degrees. that's at 8:00. by 4:00 this afternoon, 70 degrees. a decent warmup in the suburbs in spite of cloudy skies, 52 this morning. at 8:00, by lunch time today, 62 degrees. in the lehigh valley, you're more likely to see breaks of sunshine. 54 degrees at 8:00 by lunch time. 65 and 70 degrees this afternoon. as far as delaware, south jersey are concerned, plenty of clouds but the temperatures will be climbing in spite of those clouds. there will be some thin spots. you could see a little bit of blue sky peeking through at times. there's still a chance of shower. 8:00 this morning, 54 degrees by noontime. 60 degrees at the jersey shore. we'll go through the futurecast hour by hour, show you when the next chance of showers comes into our area. that's when i'm back in ten minutes. jessica boyington has your first alert traffic. jessie? >> we are giving you an update right now over the vine street
expressway closure. today and this morning it wasç closed westbound and eastbound in between broad street and right here towards the schuylkill expressway. all lanes now open. you can see traffic freely moving right here. westbound and eastbound. now you have access again to 95 and the schuylkill expressway. that ongoing construction typically clears around 5:00 this morning. and they have cleared a little bit early. good news there. you're good to go on the vine street expressway. 422 around route 23, no problems. really delays in either direction. we are still dealing with this construction. some lane restrictions there. but no big delays on to 422 this morning. there's construction out there, paving crews on kelly drive headed eastbound between hunting park avenue and fairmount avenue as well. more updates when i come back in the next ten. if you've driven through center city philadelphia lately, you may be wondering how long construction along and above the vine street expressway will last. well, we have the answer for you. nbc 10's katy zachry is live
alongside the construction zone with new information from penndot about this massive project. katy? >> yes, vai, it is a behemoth of a project right in the heart of center city. we're told by penndot, it will last until the fall of 2019. until then, expect more of this, more overnight expressway closures and detours around that work. but penndot says there's a big payoff. skyforce 10 was over the progress that's been made so far on the vine street expressway. this week, the road is closed from the broad street exit to the schuylkill expressway interchange in both directions from 11:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. that lasts until friday morning. that's the only time these construction crews can legally close the road. this week's work is specifically to install eight steel bridge beams that are needed for new bridges that will cross the vine street expressway. the old bridges date back to the 1950s and they're structurally outdated.
>> it was a type of construction method that was popular at that period of time, but now it's outdated. the new bridges will certainly provide decades of safe travel above the expressway. >> and of course our traffic reports every morning have been alerting you to the intermittent delays and detours of the vine street expressway, even though this specific work i talked about to install those eight steel beams, that lasts through friday morning. gene blum says to expect more overnight closures throughout the spring, summer and fall of this year. we'll keep you updated. reporting live in center city, katy zachry, nbc 10 news. we know the name but not the motive of the plan police say carried out several stabbing attacks in massachusetts. >> the suspect and two other people are dead. the attacks happened at two locations first at a home, then at a shopping mall about 40 miles south of boston. here's what we know. police say arthur derosa first
stabbed two women in a home, killing one, injuring the other. then police say derosa drove to a mall, crashed his car through the front of a macy's store, assaulted several people there, next walked into a stran, stabbed two people and one of them died. a witness at the mall described what she saw. >> there was a lot of crews here, fire struck -- fire trucks, ambulances. i sat in my çcar. i didn't want to get out. >> it all ended when an off-duty police officer shot derosa in the restaurant inside the mall. they found no evidence it is related to terrorism. the public has another chance today to weigh in on philadelphia's proposed tax on soda and other sugary drinks. the city council are holding a public hearing on next year's budget, including the mayor's plan to add a 3 cent per ounce tax on sugary drinks. a city council vote on the tax could come as early as june.
three council members have come out against the attacks. the remaining 14 have not said which way they'll vote. 5:05 and 54 degrees outside. crews are working to clean up a spill at a creek in montgomery county. skyforce 10 was over tookany creek in glenn side yesterday. this happened a day after a hollywood star visited the same creek to talk about water quality. people began seeing the substance in renninger park. an nbc 10 viewer sent us picks from the scene. the pool painting project nearby has since been stopped. on monday, actor and environmental advocate mark ruffalo visited different location of tookany creek in cheltenh cheltenham. he learned water techniques from researchers and local students.
we got a sneak peek inside the divine lorraine hotel on north broad street before today's open house. the landmark is being transformed after years of neglect. it will feature 101 apartments, 24 hotel rooms and a restaurant when it re-opens in november. the hotel has a lot of history. >> and there was a secret hatch right at the corner and that was the speak easy entrance. i mean, a real speak easy. this was during prohibition. >> that old speak easy will become a new restaurant now. check out the divine lorraine hotel between 3:30 and 8:00 p.m. today. now your nbc 10 first alert weather with meteorologist bill henley. >> 54 degrees at 5:07. rain falling in parts of delaware and south jersey. cape may is getting some very light rainfall. those light rain showers are streaming through. already seeing improvement in delaware. look it's pulling out of dover,
just a few showers in milford. that's light rainfall. farther to the north, a few sprinkles, isolated shower here and there. most of the area is dry at this time. take your umbrella. this may not be the end of the showers today. we will see mostly cloudy skies today with a break or two of sunshine possible. there's a chance we'll see more scattered showers as the day goes on as well. in spite of that, the temperatures will be climbing from the 40s and 50s into the 60s this afternoon. you can see breaks in the clouds to the southwest. we'll be watching for these showers, next round of showers, that's a possibility for us later this morning and into this afternoon. the futurecast at 8:30 this morning, shows very little rainfall. much of the commute will be dry and you'll see some sunshine to start with in allentown and trenton, philadelphia, mostly cloudy skies. then here comes the chance of showers. that's at lunch time today from philadelphia to the south into new jersey and çdover. see those steadier showers farther to the south. there's still a possibility of
some of that shower activity continuing into the early afternoon hours. very light rainfall. stand by for a mostly cloudy day today with temperatures that will be climbing into the lower 70s, haddonfield 72 degrees this afternoon. trenton partly cloudy skies to start with. 74 this afternoon. getting showers this morning in wildwood, 64 degrees. we'll get breaks in the rainfall. mostly cloudy day at the shore. a bit warmer for linwood in atlantic city and delaware, low 60s for dewey beach. those showers will taper off this morning. still a chance of a shower later this morning for wilmington and into dover. 70 in wilmington, 67 degrees in dover. there are some warmer days ahead. in fact, tomorrow. you may have noticed that with the seven day at the bottom of the screen. a look at the ten-day outlook when i'm back in ten minutes. >> warmer. put a smile on my face. all right. let's check in and phone out what's happening with the roads in south jersey. >> 295, jessica boyington has

more injured. authorities will announce the final results of their investigation this afternoon. opponents of a proposed gas pipeline in our area delivered a petition to the statehouse in trenton. the penn east pipeline would stretch more than 100 miles from luzerne county to lawrence township in mercer county. environmentalists are also suing the pennies pipeline company. they say the project will destroy the beauty along the delaware river and create a safety hazard to nearby houses. this animation shows how the pipeline project would work. the company says safety is priority number one and the project will provide low cost natural gas while creating thousands of jobs. now to a story you saw first on nbc 10 as police look for a bugler hitting homes in montgomery county. and this is new surveillance video, what police say is the burglar in action. at one point he tries to use a mickey mouse ornament to the get into the house. he eventually succeeds with a shovel. this is one of three homes

blocking the road on route 47. that's closed because of that in both directions around beaver dam road. follow local detours throughout the scene. no major backups or traffic throughout the rest of the area. it's still a little early for that. this is the white horse pikeç new jersey as well. this is pennsauken along collingswood circle more updates when i come back in the next ten minutes. now your nbc 10 first alert weather with meteorologist bill henley. >> rainy start this morning for parts of the area. some scattered showers moving through cape may right now. while it is mainly dry in philadelphia, we're seeing a few light scattered showers moving through chester county and into delaware county. just a few sprinkles this morning. the clouds are in place, mostly cloudy start this morning. and you might see a few more of these showers later this morning and into this afternoon. not everybody will get the rainfall. not everybody is seeing temperatures in the lower 50s like delaware, south jersey and
new jersey. look at the lehigh valley running about 10 degrees cooler than the rest of the area. the skies have been slow to cloud over, 43 degrees in the lehigh valley. the suburbs at 46 degrees and interior new jersey some 40s and low 50s. pretty uniform thanks to the cloud cover we're starting with during the day. even though it's at 50 degrees in florence, hopewell township is 47 degrees. temperatures climb through the 50s into the 60s. we may end up near 70 degrees this afternoon. it's going to be a mainly cloudy day today. near 70 degrees at 4:00 in philadelphia. mostly cloudy skies for the suburbs and the lehigh valley. better chance of seeing sunshine, especially to start with. clouds will be moving into the lehigh valley as well. delaware, some showers this morning. this afternoon, 67 degrees. 50s to start with at the jersey shore. a little bit warmer by noontime but not much warmer than that. later this afternoon, very low 60s today. sunshine will be fading as the clouds move in.
here's the futurecast showing at 1:00 this afternoon, light rain showers extending once again to the shore. the heavier stuff is staying to our south. there's a chance of sprinkles. by 9:00 this evening, those are moving out of here. as we dry out, it looks like any wet weather will avoid us for tomorrow. we'll see sunshine tomorrow but that could be here on friday. for today, sunshine might see a peek or two but it will be mostly cloudy, 72 degrees. still a chance of a shower during the day today. come tomorrow, 75 degrees and then showers and thunderstorms likely to come through on friday. and a saturday shower is possible but not an all-day rainfall. 72 degrees the high temperature on saturday. then it will clear out for sunday. bright sunshine, cooler, 50 in the morning, 67 degrees in the afternoon. we should be warming into low 70s this time of the year. a little below normal for monday and tuesday. cooler with the rain. 66 the high after morning temperatures in the 50s. then here come the 70s for wednesday, thursday and friday.
a silicon valley startup is making moves toward using drones to deliver items to your door step. the company called zip line just signed a deal with u.p.s. to deliver life-saving supplies to hospitals in rwanda. it's now in talks with the faa about bringing commercial drone delivery to the u.s. landon dowdy with cnbc business news. >> watch shares of disney. they sank in late trading tuesday after the media giant reported its first earnings miss in five years. while zootoppia power ed, there were also other numbers. the dow and s&p 500 posting their best percentage gains in two months.
