nbc 10 breaking news. tied up and robbed. philadelphia police say armed men barged into a northeast philadelphia home and terrorized a family. a year later and it's hard to imagine nen maanyone made it alive. hear one passenger's survival story. nbc 10 first alert radar tracking showers and thunderstorms to end the workweek. 4:30. 61 degrees. welcome to friday. this is "nbc 10 news today." i'm tracy davidson. let's get right to meteorologist bill henley with his first alert neighborhood forecast. a look at conditions right where you live. they can be changing throughout the day. >> they will be. cloudy skies and temperatures that are warming this morning. 64 degrees right now in the lehigh valley.
clouds are already in easton and there's a chance of a sprinkle or a light shower moving through at 7:00 this morning. by 10:00, 64 degrees. and climbing. but mostly cloudy to start with. in fact, most of the area will stay cloudy through the day. it's this afternoon we'll likely see showers and thunderstorms roll through the area. afternoon temperatures in the lower 70s. 72 degrees for philadelphia. as of this minute, the rain is to our west and it is dry in our area. but those showers are on the move. those first showers you can see a few sprinkles heading towards harrisburg. we can see scattered light showers in the lehigh valley in the suburbs, later this morning and then the storms for this afternoon. i'll take you through it hour by hour with the futurecast when i'm back in ten minutes. it's a friday. let's see how the traffic is looking on this friday morning. jessica boyington has first alert traffic. >> route 202 around route 29. no big problems or delays in our cameras here. you can see traffic moving along nicely. look at this drive time.
we're still in the green as we are for most of our majors this morning or at least right now. northbound from 29 to the schuylkill expressway. so from this point if you're headed to the schuylkill expressway, a seven-minute trip and speeds still into the 60s. one of the other things we're watching today is some closures. that's because of the dad vail regatta. kelly drive is closed. this started yesterday morning between strawberry mansion drive and fountain green drive. there's also an accident in montgomery county in abington on forest avenue and ascot road. tracy? philadelphia police say armed men tied up and robbed a northeast philadelphia family in their home. nbc 10's katy zachry is live at the scene. katy, police have a lot of questions so far. it's different. tell us more. >> it is different, tracy. minutes ago i just finished having a conversation with the family. they arrived back here after being at northeast detectives for the last little bit.
as we push up the hill, mç want to explain where this happened. it happened in a home on the 14,000 block in the far northeast section of philadelphia on faraday street. we have video from soon after this home invasion happened. investigators say that three men, all wearing masks, all wearing gloves and at least one of them armed, exposing a gun, broke into this home and tied up the three people who were sleeping inside. who you have living here is a couple in their 60s and adult son. he's in his upper 30s. the adult son told me that he was taken from his bedroom into his parents' room, thrown on the floor. his hands were tied around his back. all three victims were in the same room. and the three men, the masked men kept demanding money, an amount of money. where is the money? and the family kept insisting we don't have money.
we don't know what you're talking about. the homeowner actually just told me that the perpetrator said to each other, i think we may have the wrong house. what's leading police to maybe go down that route is this is an incredibly quiet, safe neighborhood. in fact, they spoke to that not long ago. >> it's actually one of the quietest neighborhoods in the city. why this particular house was targeted is unknown. according to the family, they did not have a lot of cash in the house. >> reporter: fortunately, no one in the family was injured. they really were traumatized. they are completely shaken. they told me they didn't even have the courage at this point or the wherewithal to speak on camera about what happened which is why we had a conversation off camera. i'll have another update coming up at the top of the hour. reporting live in northeast philadelphia, katy zachry, nbc 10 news. 4:34. we're also following breaking news in burlington county. a fire that's been burning all
night long in the bass river state forest. take a look at this fire. there are reports the flames are consuming hundreds of acres on the garden state parkway. traffic on the parkway is not affected. no buildings are involved. the fire is 60% contained. tap the nbc 10 app for updates. prosecutors say they will not charge four wilmington police officers who shot and killed a man in a while chair last year. cell phone video taken prior to the shooting shows police repeatedly telling jeremy ban mcdole to put his hands up. when he reached into his waistband, four officers shot and killed him. delaware's attorney general announced he will not seek criminal charges against the officers. mcdole's family says they don't understand the decision. >> the evidence is right there. clear in the video. so he didn't have a gun.
why did you murder my brother? >> authorities say evidence shows mcdole was armed with a gun. mcdole's family is suing is the city. the mayor's office sent out a statement agreeing the officers should not be charged. happening today, race weekend continues at dover international. drivers will spend the day practicing and competing in qualifying rounds and signing autographs. the nascar sprint cup series race begins sunday at 1:00. 4:36. there is no substitute for real-life experiences but for police in bucks county, this is the next best thing. ahead, see how a unique training tool is helping officers betle handle potentially dangerous encounters. also ahead, from long lines to capitol hill hearings, the trouble continues for the tsa. hear what top leaders will be doing in washington today.
good morning, everyone. jessica boyington with a check on your first alert traffic. right now we're watching route 42 over in new jersey. this is right around the deptford area, right around route 41. no problems in either direction yet. as you can see the northbound lanes are doing fine. this drive time is still in the green, northbound from 55 headed up to the walt whitman bridge. if you're headed to philadelphia, a five-minute trip from route 55. there's also an accident in abington, montgomery county, forest avenue and ascot road. if you're on the pa turnpike, you'll do okay out there as well. no problems or delays. we are still green with our drive times, 23-minute trip westbound, that will take you from route 1 toç valley forge with speeds in the 60s. >> now your nbc 10 first alert weather with meteorologist bill henley. >> 4:39 and 61 degrees. dry for now. this is a live view from
wilmington. you see wilmington has left some of the lights on for us. frawley stadium, it's completely dark. that's the infield which will likely be covered. we have showers and thunderstorms on the way. starting off mild, 61 degrees, the pennsylvania suburbs have dropped down into the 50s along with south jersey. that's 61 degrees, most of the area is right in the same territory, just a little bit warmer in wilmington right now at 62. we'll warm into the 70s in spite of cloudy skies and a chance of showers. winds coming out of the southeast and that will help with the warmup for inland areas right at the shore. it's a different story. this is just updated information now. 7 whiching this morning, cloudy skies. the chance of showers will be increasing by late morning and more likely as we go into the afternoon hours. for philadelphia, that means 70 degrees today. in the suburbs, same story, a cloudy start, 59 degrees. a chance of showers and thunderstorms late in the morning and into the afternoon
hours. the storms will be moving through the lehigh valley. showers likely during the morning. should be tapering off during the afternoon. 65 degrees in the lehigh valley. what about delaware? yes, we're starting off with cloudy skies in wilmington. 60 degrees at 7:00. in the middle 60s at 11:00. those showers will sweep through and possibly downpours and thunderstorms, 70 degrees this afternoon. for new jersey, yes, cloudy skies to start with. even a chance of showers in the late morning hours just across the delaware in new jersey and into the afternoon, they'll be sweeping through south jersey and towards the jersey shore which will start with sunshine, 57 degrees. just some sunshine. it's not going to clear out completely today. those showers possibly by late morning, more likely in the afternoon for the jersey shore. that's today. there's the seven day forecast. when i'm back in ten minutes, i'll look at the ten-day outlook. 4:41. one year later and the images from the deadly amtrak
derailment are impossible to forget. take a look at the remains of the first car of that train. half of the eight dj and some of the most serious injuries were to people seated there. next, hear one man's survival story from car one. this is just a simulation but this training tool is helping officers in one bucks county town better prepare for how to deal with real-life violent encounters.
a new classroom simulator is helping local police officers train for real-life swaying. bensalem police are using a simulator that creire-creates custody disputes and burglary calls. >> the best part about this is we can go through scenarios where officers have to quickly decide and make that best decision. >> the simulator contains more
than 500 different scenes. using the simulator means the department no longer has to rent vacant buildings for practice sessions or spend money on costly overtime to accommodate complicated training schedules. happening today, federal officials will address the safety of summer travelers. nbc 10's vai sikahema is live in the digital operations center with details about what's going to happen today. vai? >> good morning, tracy. this is a big concern for a lot of people because summer means vacationing and traveling. homeland security secretary jeh johnson and tsa administrator peter neffenger will both speak to the media this afternoon. they'll outline steps taken to protect increased passengers this summer. neffenger received yesterday. he blamed the wait times at airports on more passengers, just the volume. more carry-on bags and less screening staff. neffenger says several large
airports are experimenting with travel light lanes for passengers who only carry on a small item like a briefcase or a purse. the tsa also hopes more people will enroll in the precheck screening program. a business coalition criticized the tsa saying blaming passengers won't solve the problem of unconsciously long security lines. volunteers went through mock checkups. delays were caused by waterç bottles left in bags, also laptops and even guns. >> it finds longer to get through the airport. >> i usually will go up to the front and say i'm going to miss a flight, this is taking way too long. i have gotten close. >> the port authority sent a letter to the tsa last week, pleading for relief from the long lines and warned the port authority may have to hire its own security firm to replace tsa
workers. we'll have highlights from today's briefing about summer travel safety on nbc 10 news this afternoon again at 4:00. live in the digital operations center, vai sikahema, nbc 10 news. we'll see you at 5:00. 4:47 right now. one year after the deadly amtrak derailment in philadelphia, survivors are telling their stories. the images from that night are etched into memory. skyforce 10 is over the scene. hard to believe anyone could survive. robert hewitt did. he was gravely injured in the crash. he spent several weeks in a coma. doctors initially told his family they weren't sure he'd remake it. first responders rushed hewitt to hahnemann hospital the night of the crash. he remembers his body hitting another man just before the train cars came to rest. >> wonder did he live or die. did me hitting him kill him, hurt him?
was he dead when he hit me? i don't know. but it bothers me. >> hewitt is among dozens of passengers suing amtrak over the crash that killed eight people and injured 200. now to decision 201. house speaker paul ryan says he was encouraged by his meeting with donald trump but he says he's still not ready to endorsement presumptive republican nominee. trump spent thursday reaching out to republican leaders for their support. speaker ryan says he is totally committed to working with trump to unify the party. >> i do believe that we are now plapting the seeds to get ourselves unified, to bridge the gaps and differences. from here we'll go deeper into the policy areas to see where that common ground is and how we can make sure we are operating off the same core principles. >> trump did express interest in having him remain chairman of the public national convention in cleveland. on the democratic side, former president bill clinton
will campaign for his wife at the college of new jersey in ewing. their daughter chelsea will rally voters in essex and middlesex counties. hillary clinton was in camden county on wednesday ahead of new jersey's june 7th primary. 4:49 right now. let's get you to work. check the vine street expressway which overnight has construction on it. we always check to see when it clears out of the way. first alert traffic reporter jessica boyington is watching that. >> we are starting to see some of those closures lifted a little bit earlier than normal this morning. definitely a good thing here. as you can see in our cameras, this is right around 24th street. traffic is moving westbound. you can see cars even headed eastbound. there are some cars allowed to go to the schuylkill or 95, if you're headed east or westbound on the vine street expressway right now. we do still see ramp closures, the ramp from the schuylkill expressway to the vine street expressway headed eastbound is blocked withç police activity. they will be picking that up shortly. right now, you can take local vine. if you're heading out the door
in the next couple of minutes or so, by the time you get there, everything should be wrapped up. watch for more construction, these off ramps are closed on 95. 95 northbound at cottman, 95 northbound at allegheny and girard and 95 southbound around aramingo avenue. that's ongoing work there. 13 minutes, average speeds into the 60s. i'll have more updates for you when i come back in the next ten minutes. now your nbc 10 first alert weather with meteorologist bill henley. >> ten minutes before 5:00. we are mild and dry this morning. but clouds are here. they're helping to keep temperatures much warmer. look at allentown, 64 degrees. 60 in philadelphia. a couple spots in the 50s. most the area is in the upper 50s, trenton, vineland at 58 degrees. all these numbers are running warmer than they were yesterday. showers and thunderstorms are on the way. the best chance will be this afternoon. we could see a few sprinkles this morning.
this is 8:00 this morning. light showers, a possibility north and west. if we don't see those, we'll see the umbrellas going up during the afternoon hours. that's 2:00 this afternoon. the potential for some moderate showers through the suburbs into the lehigh valley. you'll see scattered shower at 2:00 in the afternoon. in allentown, these showers and that line is on the move. heavy downpours as it moves through philadelphia and at 3:00 today, those showers and thunderstorms are on their way to new jersey and then heading offshore. we'll be clearing out tonight. that's not the only chance we'll see for showers and thunderstorms within the next couple days. right now, the wet weather is to the west and northwestern pennsylvania. that's where we're seeing some of the heavier rainfall. those showers are a possibility for us during the afternoon. right now it's mostly cloudy. those clouds will stay with us today. tomorrow we'll see some breaks of sunshine. today umbrellas will be going up, 68 degrees for the lehigh valley. for the suburbs, showers and thunderstorms will roll through. we could see late-day sunshine, near 70 degrees for newtown.
for philadelphia, into the low 70s this afternoon, fairmont 72 degrees. mt. airy, 70 degrees with a chance of afternoon showers and thunderstorms. they will roll through new jersey. 71 degrees in haddonfield for the jersey shore. a chance of a shower this morning, really a better chance of later afternoon showers and thunderstorms as we saw in the futurecast. it will take some time to arrive at the shore and 70s this afternoon, not as warm as yesterday for delaware. those storms rolling through during the early to midafternoon hours for today. that's today. those storms out of here, by 9:00 this evening, maybe a few sprinkles. but that's about it. we're watching saturday. we'll start off with some sunshine and the sunshine will be fading in the afternoon. here comes another round of showers. that's 11:30 in the morning. we'll see sunshine and a nice warmup on saturday into the middle 70s. that line of showers and a chance of some thunderstorms will be moving through during the late afternoon hours on
saturday, and then it keeps on going. we'll be clearing out by saturday evening. a couple time periods to watch. the first one is today, this afternoon. mostly cloudy through the day. we start with sunshineç on saturday and warm up to 73 degrees. then bright sunshine will be here on sunday as it all clears out. winds will shift and it will be a breezy day, 59 degrees sunday afternoon. warmer monday, tuesday and wednesday. we're into the 70s and closer to 8 degrees thursday afternoon. tuesday, wednesday and thursday, there's a chance of some showers in the area. for friday, we are drying out. next weekend is looking warmer and dry. tracy? >> all right, bill, thanks. right now we're following breaking news from northeast philadelphia where officers are investigating a home invasion. next in a live report at 5:00, we'll tell you what police say the armed suspects did to the family here. also next, over the edge.
good morning, everyone. jessica boyington watching the lehigh valley right now. we're watching 78 right around lehigh street. no problems in either direction right here but we have a disabled vehicle if you're heading out the door in montgomery county. lower merion on belmont avenue and east levering road. more updates inç the 5:00 hour graduation day at villanova university. the school's 173rd commencement is this afternoon. ceremonies normally happen outside. but because of the possibility of showers and thunderstorms, the university has moved ceremonies indoors to the pavilion. the honors keep coming for the national champion villanova wildcats. more then a month after their historic march to victory.

they hosted a fund-raiser called knock out homelessness. one step away provides jobs to those in need and many use their income to find housing. now the nbc 10 digital team shed a light on the problem in its special, the faces of homeless youth. you can see report and read stories about the people they profiled only on the nbc 10 app and on nbc10.com. well, mt. holly officials approved two park improvement projects and these are renderings of what mill dam park will look like when the $2 million project is completed. crews will build a third basketball court and put up lights on all the courts they will also construct a splash park and pavilion area. workers will replace buttonwood lake dam which was adathed in a storm two years ago. let's talk fear of heights. you have a fear of heights. >> i have a fear of two things, mice and heights. you? >> i jumped out of a plane. >> that would you be terrifying to me. nbc 10 was at this event.
